the president's remarks about russia as disgraceful. former cia director john brennan called treasonous and grounds for impeachment. nancy pelosi and chuck schumer announced that he was being blackmailed by a foreign power, or a spy, one member of congress called for a military coup against the presidency. as the rage storm swirled, the president bowed to the inevitable, genuflecting before u.s. intelligence agencies whosb judgment must never be questioned and recited the oath of loyalty to the spy bureaucrats in charge of the country. >> in a key sentence in my remarks i said the word "would" instead of "wouldn't." the sentence should have been, "i don't see anyny reason why it wouldn't." why it wouldn't be russia. the sentence should have been

and i thought it might be unclear on the transcripts or the actual video -- the sentence should have been, "i don't see any reason why it wouldn't be russia." sort of a double negative. you can put that in and i think that probably clarifies things pretty good by itself.hi >> tucker: so that's the hostage tape. the president buckled to criticism. that is what happens, he buckle buckled. that happens, this is politics after all. what is amazing, unusual, and ominous is who made him buckle. the people yelling the loudest about how the russians are our greatest enemy and trump is their puppet happen to be the very same people who have been mismanaging our foreign policy for the past few decades.ur the people who invaded iraq and wouldn't admit it was a mistake, the people who killed gaddafi and prolonged the horrible syrian civil war

and threw open the borders of europe. the one still defending the pointless afghan conflict b and even now planning brand-new disasters around the world in lebanon, iran, and yes, in russia. these are people who made america weaker, poor, and sadder. the group whose failures got trump elected in the first place. you think by this late date, they would be completely unemployable, picking up trash by the side of the turnpike somewhere but they're not. they are hosting cable news shows and holding high positions of influence at theti state department. they run virtually every nonprofit public policy institution in washington. they are still in charge of our national conversation and naturally, they hate the idea of rethinking or correcting any of the countless blunders they've made over the years and that's one of the reasons they hatein trump because he calls them ony' those blunders. being trump, he can't always explain precisely what he means to say, sometimes he getss details wrong or he gets sidetracked with some personal venn data, as if anyone cares about the ridiculous jim acosta

guy, nobody does. on the big questions trump is indisputably right. the cold war is over, the world has changed. it is time to rethink america'so alliances and act in our own interest for once. russia is not a close friend of the united states. the question is why should we consider russia a i mortal enem? of course russia spies on us, so do a lot of countries. some of them far more effectively than russia. russia's attempt to meddle in c our election was comically amateurish, badly targeted facebook ads almost nobody saw. compare that effort a to the dep penetration of the american industry and defense sector by the communist country of china or the sway that the gulf states have over the political process or that latin american countries are changing elections by forcing demographic change at a rate of americans consistently say they don't want. those are all major challenges from foreign powers to our american democracy, they are real. but nobody on cable news seems upset by any of it.

why is that?t here is one reason: many in washington are gettinggt rich fm the chinese and the saudis. latin americans clean their homes and watch their kids. those countries can't be our enemies in their view. nobody is getting rich from russia, so putin must be our mortal foe. that is with the neocons are telling us we must believe. does anyone actually believe it? no sober person who's read a newspaper could recite that talking point without laughing because it's stupid. the only option if you want to force the population to accept something ridiculous is to make sure they don't think too much about it, that they are quiet, that they do what they're told. if you don't believe it, watch what happens to trump right now. it's entirely possible, it's likely the russian government broke into the dmz servers before the last election. it certainly sounds like something they might do. before we act like we know for a fact that's what happened and go to war with russia over that, shouldn't we see some actual evidence that it happened? maybe a server or at least a

clear explanation of what happened. we haven't seen that, that's what he asked for. how dare he, that's a treasonous thought. he's a traitor to his country. that's what they're saying, not just a few of them, all of them are saying it in unison. think for a second about what they are demanding. if you don't automatically accept the imprecise, nonspecific, never explained findings of shadowyve intelligee agencies of long documented track records of making seriousd mistakes, you've somehow betrayed your country. the very people who assured you that iraq had weapons of mass destruction, the ones who said the shah would never fall in iran, those people must be believed without question or else. on television, this group is called the intelligence community, that's an orwellian name if there ever was one. what is this community we hear so much about? does it have a zip code?

a public library system? a youth football league? how long before congress starts mending unthinking obedience to the lawmaker community. it's a community. you must obey it. dissent is unpatriotic and if you don't agree you're working for vladimir putin. that's where we are heading and fast. in some ways, this whole story is about donald trump and what he said and what he does. on a deeper level, it has nothing to do with donald trump. this is about democracy, whether or not voters rule their country. it turns out the very people telling you they are saving our democracy are working overtime to try to destroy it s and scolding you as they do. yesterday we asked the presideni about this. tonight we are running fewer commercials and airing our extended interview with the president, here is part one of that conversation. >> tucker: thanks for doing this. the reaction to your press conference in washington wased swift and intense, former cia director john brennan described as treasonous and an unimpeachable defense. why the push toward conflict

with russia in washington on both sides? >> president trump: i think brennan is a very bad guy, a lot of things happened under his watch. i think he's a very bad person. i think when you watch peter strzok and lisa page, comey, take a look at that and mccabe, who has big problems i assume -- you look at the deception, m the lies, what's gone on in the last fairly long period of time. before t i won. long before i won afraid during the campaign. i guess probably during the republican when i was fighting against 17 other republicans -- this has been going on for a long time. these are people that in my opinion are truly bad people. they are being exposed for what they are and it's a shame that it has to happen but it's really hurt our country. >> tucker: their view is that the united states is forever in conflict with russia, which is our chief global adversary, and anyone who doesn't believe that is betraying the united states.

without taking a boy that is true or not, why do you think there is this bipartisan consensus on that in washington? >> president trump: it's incredible you look at world war i and world war ii, there was germany. and in world war ii, russia losa 50 million people and helped us win the war. i was saying to myself, russia really helped us. i'm not pro-russia, pro-anybody, i just want to have this country be safe, i don't want nuclear weapons -- even people thinking about it. you know, russia and the united states control 90% of the nuclear weapons in the world. getting along with russia and not only for that reason, it's a good thing. not a bad thing. >> tucker: are they our chief adversary? >> president trump: strong military but their economy is much smaller than china. i don't want to use the word adversary, we can work together, we can do great. everybody can do well and we can live in peace. i think it's very important and i've watched your show a lot and

i see how you're talking about the magnificent size of china, you look at what they've done in a fairly short period of time, that's because of a lot of badd leadership on behalf of the united states, we allowed it toh happen, we allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars. right now, as you see, and you've probably noticed things are happening -- we have to bring it more into line. we have to level the playing field between thee united states and china. we've increased our net worth, we've increased our worth by more than $7 trillion since the election. we're about twice the size of china, our economy. china still has a massive economy, they have the second biggest by far. >> tucker: so nato. nato was created chiefly to prevent the russians from invading western europe. you don't believe there is that

risk, so what is the purpose of nato right now? >> president trump: it's okay,'s it's fine, they have to pay. they weren't paying, other presidents went, they made a speech and they leave and nothing would happen. the fact that they didn't pay ih not a new fact, this is something that people have known for a long time. other countries were delinquent, in the real estate business, we say the word "delinquent." they didn't pay. i went there three or four days ago and i said you've got to pay because we are not going to pay from 70-90. we're not going to pay 90% of the costs to defend europe and on top of that, the european union kills us on trade. we lost $151 billion last year on trade, they don't take ourr product, our farmers' beautiful goods, they don't take our cars and if they do the rate of taxes many times what we would charge them, we only charge themhe 2.5. their tariff is substantially

higher. in the case of china, be charged 2.5%. and when we send a card to china, they charge us 25%. people say we don't want tariffs but how is that fair when one country gets 25% and another country gets to it a halfy percent? the one getting 25 doesn't even want the cars. they want them to build those factories built in china. they want those factories built in europe. now we're doing things that have never been done before in this country and you see what's going on. it's been very important to watch. >> tucker: membership in nato obligates the members to defend any other member who has been attacked. let's say montenegro is attacked. why should my son go to montenegro to defend it from attack? >> president trump: i understand what you aree saying. i've asked the same question. montenegro is a tiny countryry with very strong people. >> tucker: i'm not against montenegro or albania. >> president trump: they are very strong people.

they may get aggressive. congratulations, you are in world war iii. i understand that's the way it was set up.an don't forget, i just got here a little more than a year and a half ago. but i took over the conversation for your four days ago and i said, you have to pay. and the secretary general said that because of president trump last year, we had an additional $44 billion -- with a "b" -- raised for nato. this year it's going to be much more than that it was very unfair, they weren't paying. not only were we not paying for most of it, add that to your equation about montenegro. >> tucker: as he traveled around the europe, looked at europe over the years, can you think of a place that has been improved by mass immigration meant or movements of large numbers of refugees? >> president trump: not one. i said the immigration policies in europe are a disaster, you're destroying europe, you're destroying the culture of

europe, the crime is up in those areas, and you'd better to do something. i told them that. it's not me, it's not anything, you look at the numbers and the numbers speak. the culture is changing rapidly and the crime rate is changing more than rapidly. you'd better do something, i told them that. >> tucker: what are the lessons for us? >> president trump: we have to be strong on the border, we're much stronger than we ever were and our numbers are much h lowe. still, we're getting the wall, were putting in about $5 billion we've already started the wall and a $1.6 billion started inta san diego. it's almost completed in that area. the people who are really asking for it, they probably go down as "we don't want the wall" but when it came to their backyard,

they wanted that wall and they w wanted it fast. we've started the wall, were going to continue with the wall, we have strong immigrationon policies -- our laws are so bad, tucker, somebody comes in and we end up with a court case that takes seven years and people never show up to court. it's so bad and we have to do something about it. if they come into our land we have to say, i'm sorry you have to leave. not i'm sorry, please come to court, we're going to put youu n court, you can come back in three years and they never show up. that's what's happening now. it's crazy. >> tucker: why do you think so many political and cultural leaders in the united states disagree with you and are making the case that borderss are themselves immoral? c >> president trump: it's stincredible. the democrats are for open borders which means crime. it's not a question of what do you think it means -- open borders means crime. you look at ms-13 and we stop them better than anybody else could it but when they get through -- and then we send

to avoid war with russia been greeted with this pornography passing as news analysis and commentary. he is literally being called traitorous, treasonous, and i don't know what we are going to do because if we can't discuss the issue, how can we think about our policy?hi but there is a good piece of news and i will state it quickly. ever since the soviet union ended, relations with russia have gotten worse and worse and now we are where we are. we ask ourselves why did thatt happen, communism is gone. the soviet union is gone. the answer here is always that it's an orthodoxy, it's biblical. you can't descend from it without the accused being ofli pro-kremlin. the answer is russia is to blame, putin is to blame, the united states has done nothing wrong. now the president of the united states has said somethinp absolutely heretical. he said at first in a tweet and

then after the meeting with putin. it was very simple but it was profoundly true. he said we have bad relations today because both sides are to blame. and i think that's what underlies their fury at him. he has become a heretic in the american policy system. he has challenged the fundamental axiom of american foreign policy for 25 years. >> tucker: it's stupid. what's true in foreign relations is true in marriage, it's always a joint effort to screw something up. in this regard, i say three cheers for president trump. he has said, look, we are in a dangerous situation with russia and it's not just russia to blame, we are to blame. we did wrongheaded things backit in the '90s. and since. what we need to do, this is me speaking now, having acknowledged that, is have a discussion of where our policy toward russia went wrong, first under clinton, then under bush, then under obama. it is fully bipartisan but what trump has given us, if the media would allow him, is an opportunity do you rethink. and if you don't rethink, how do you get policy right? if you don't get policy right, we are talking about war. >> tucker: it's like "seinfeld," anything. learn thank you very much, it's great to see you. next, a democratic lawmaker says the summit meeting yesterday

>> tucker: now the second half of our interview from helsinki with the president. he had a lot to say about the mueller indictments. a very interesting exchange on angela merkel, whether she or vladimir putin is alolo better leader for their people and more. here it is. >> tucker: you spoke with the russian president about the hacking of the dnc servers. those indictments were announced just a couple of days before you left, what do you think of the timing of those indictments?

>> president trump: i don't think of the timing as much as i think of other timing. barack obama was president. i wasn't president when this happened. barack obama was the president of the united states when all of this -- when i was getting elected. i was being elected, i assume all of this stuff took place in that area or before. he was president and they informed him of it and he did nothing. after i won, he thought hillary was going to win, after i won he said it's a big deal -- it wasn't a big deal as long as she won. it's a disgrace and it's a disgrace what's happening to our country. >> tucker: would it be possible for you to direct the department of justice, fbi, to take possession of the serverpa and have -- assuming no government investigators looked and get to the bottom of it? >> president trump: as i've told you, the answer is absolutely it is possible and
