years. >> it has. rob: still more work to be done. >> many issues plaguing the democratic party -- the va department, chief among them egregious wait times, time and time again this is the number one issue that they have in their mind, it became a scandal back in 2014 when we heard story after story of veterans going into the va with mild, relatively mild issues but because of extended wait times those issues ballooned into life-threatening issues and we did see improvement under former va dr. david shulkin where he was able to reduce from 611,000 veterans who were waiting more than 125 days down to 86. jillian: why do you think it's a problem that seems to be unable to get resolved? >> bureaucracy. one of the things when i knew i was coming in here i put it out on veterans on social media,

some of these people have to drive extended distances in order to reach sanction hospital and, again, the wait times on wait to go see the proper doctor or just to even receive benefit decisions are pretty extensive. jillian: that's really sad. rob: it is sad. one of the stories of people who have minor issues and wait times are so bad that they become a serious -- >> major-life-threatening issues. exactly. that's what we saw in 2014 when the scandal broke out of the exact thing, story after story. jillian: let's talk about robert wilkie, navy veteran of the u.s. navy reinforce, served as acting da secretary after the ousting of shulkin, those are just a couple of things, you like him as the pick? >> you know what i like in the

highly divisive culture in congress where we have the democratic party who are bent on , they were able to gardner bipartisan support and that's really rare in the environment in which we lived in. we are expecting him to use that kind of ground swell as he walks in and starts facing some challenges, we have over 20 million veterans and 22 commit suicide every single day, opioid addiction, homeless, homelessness epidemic among veterans, he's walking into a hornets nest. rob: reduce the poverty rate as you said, so many homeless veterans and the ability, this is a big one, the ability to drain the va of employees with poor performance, be able to fire people if you're doing a crumby job. >> go figure, right? rob: isn't that frustrating? >> they generally do that in

capitalist society, if you're not doing your job, adios. i spent 10 years in military as reserve, i'm very similar with the bureaucracy that can take place versus other careers that you're not performing. we did see performance under dr. shulkin, getting legislation passed and be able to fire people if they're not doing their job. we will be looking at that but then also one of the ones that you pointed out is according to the va, the poverty rate among veterans is rising, the number of veterans on foot stamps is outpacing the number of those who have never been in the military. i think it's sad, we have young men and women who are going out in battlefield with more than rust backs on their back, they are also being waved down with the needs of their families, so again robert wilkie get the nod
