this. rob: joining me with reaction is cia operative mike baker. you listen to rand paul he makes a pretty good point that sounds logical but when you look at this list of the six people the president wants to maybe take away that clearance from, you see a lot of his worst enemies. that makes people think this is political. >> it certainly appears that way. he is in uncharted territory here. on both sides. we have never seen this public animosity and criticism from former heads of the intel community, john brennan, tremendous experience. the fact that he is out there and so vocal is unusual, extremely unusual. now that you have got director

comey and mccabe who don't have security clearances anymore so this appears to have been fired off without a lot of thought so it does appear vindictive on his part. rob: he has 4 million people with security clearances into million with top-secret clearances. and the cottage industry, and retain clearances and use that as a hiring element at an attractive point for commercial companies, they don't have to front the cost and time of sponsoring somebody with their clearances but at that level it is a different game and a different situation. we are in uncharted territory. rob: when i make this 1 million with the secret clearance? i will say i think a lot of people found when james comey wrote the book after he got out

that seemed like almost direct the profiting, he is a moot point. the question, are they being paid by these networks, for their experience or are they being paid for their current access? that is where it gets a little murky. are they paid for what they know? >> my experience is they are getting paid for their reputation and when you have someone coming out who was a former director that is the attractiveness. the argument sometimes is we want them to retain their clearances at the senior level and fact as pseudo-mentors and advisors and incoming intel leaders. it is a 1-way conversation that they are not sharing the current

administration with former leaders. it is a matter of reputation as they get hired and they go on to the network. they are not passing classified information but this is something that rand paul wanted to bring this up. it is much like other situations out of the administration. it is unusual messaging and the messaging drives this anger from the other side. they could have simply said internally we are displeased with the way these people are talking. people have a right to talk. when it comes time for clearances to expire we will renew them, that happens all the time. it is a messaging issue. rob: the comment from brennan talking about how trump was receptive at the meeting in helsinki, that is what rand paul is trying to get at. we appreciate your time.
