at foggy bottom metro station in washington were white supremacists are expected to arrive soon. reporter: we have not seen any signs of protesters yet but there are a ton of police officers who are here several hours ahead of these white nationalists who are expected to come to washington d.c. around 5:00 for their white civil rights rally. the plan as best we do understand according to organizers is that they will all gather somewhere in northern virginia at a metro station about 15 miles, 10 metro stops from here. then i will ride to the foggy bottom metro and march right on this weight up 23rd street to pennsylvania. then they will make a left and head toward lafayette park. the permit for this particular march they say they are expecting as many as 400 people. we have no idea if it is an accurate representation. if you will be higher or lower just because we are still
9:03 am
several hours away. organizers are telling everybody not to go to lafayette park. they all want to come together from northern virginia. the reason this is happening in washington d.c. today is because the organizer was not able to get a permit again in charlottesville because he was the organizer of the rally last year, one year ago this weekend that started out as a protest for the removal of a robert e lee statue in charlottesville. then evolved into violent clashes. ultimately resulting in the death. it is a hot day here, rain in the forecast and several hours from now we do expect to see several hundred peer we do not know. but they will be here for the white civil rights rally in front of the white house. arthel: thank you. eric: walk a few blocks away the so-called shut it down d.c. coalition. organizing a counter protest. griff jenkins is live at the freedom plaza for that part of the story. and what we can expect.
9:04 am
reporter: we are racing a few hundred people come into freedom plaza. the number is expected for the counter protesters against unite the right. expecting to be much larger. there is a state here they will have speakers and broad coalition of black lives matter, anti-fascists as well as others opposed to not only what happened in charlottesville the president, the organizer and mc of the speeches that are about to happen here. a guy named david thurston. i spoke to him earlier. i first met him at the inauguration. a little while ago. this is what he had to say about the message today.>> we are always concerned about what these people can do and it is startling that they would dare to try and have anything on the anniversary of their having killed someone. if you take a look around to see the groups are gathering.
9:05 am
lots of different groups that we will see and after they hear about what is going to be two hours of speeches, around 2:00 they organized a short march a couple of blocks that they will go up to lafayette park but of course, one of the flashpoints will be watching for out here is if any of this group tries to block as peter was saying, the march as they make their way from foggy bottom toward lafayette park. the group also has the permit in lafayette park. the police saying a press conference to help more than anything to keep the two groups separate. eric: thank you so much. keeping them separate certainly is the name of the game. arthel: there is we are seeing reports that there are tense moments in charlottesville virginia. as protesters they are mark one year to the day for deadly brothers. doug mckelway is live with that. reporter: for the first time in 48 hours we been in charlottesville we are
9:06 am
beginning to see tensions rise here a little bit. we are in a bit of an ebb right now. police officers here are decked out in riot gear. they have helmets on, padded gloves, batons as well as sidearms. they are prepared to go in if necessary. we are at the intersection right now where heather higher was mowed down by a white supremacist last year. that street, the particular area where she died is blocked off to pedestrians. early this morning about 9:00 there was a rally for the social justice group in a park, booker t. washington park. it was a group much larger than the 50 which a permit is required. much larger than that. they did not have a permit together in that park. yet the police a show of tremendous restraint, let them have that rally there. they did not show any kind of
9:07 am
force. but then after that rally was done in the park they there was. in tremendous restraint the police tried to accommodate them. also the virginia state lead ask if they were in control running the show and wanted i am not. they asked another and they said no. the police said where are you going? so we can provide an escort for you. they all said we don't know where we are going. anyway, they ended up here at heather heyer way. there's been lots of shouting, couple of minor scuffles but you see the tensions are high. stephen, wont you go down that way. our cameraman, go down where they seem to have moved on a little bit right now. this virginia state armored car has just been put into place here. that is where it now stands. state police helicopter
9:08 am
hovering overhead. it is a bit of an ominous sound for us that were here last year when the state police helicopter crashed killing two state troopers. we are in the same place last year, looking this is eerily similar. policed i want to say again, using an excess of caution and restraint. i suppose there is a fine line though between an excess of caution and being too inactive if things get out of hand. we have not reached that point yet. we're watching it very closely. back to you in new york. >> a similar image, what does seem to be different this year is the high end police presence there. you have got more police presence. you know that there are states of emergency declared in virginia this week giving local law enforcement access to the state resources that we see there. including the national guard. as a deterrent to make sure the violence is under control. >> that's right.
9:09 am
when adding to the confusion of what's going on here today, let me make it absolutely clear, there are no white supremacists. alleys who are visibly showing their faces in charlottesville. we've seen actually none of them. in the absence of that, many of these provocateurs from the groups are turning their anger at the police were actually here to protect them. i told you how the police said we want to provide an escort. where you going? they said we don't know. so you have to hand it to the police officers in charge here who are taking this approach. it is the supreme irony how these people have no white supremacists to get in their faces. instead they're getting in the faces of the police officers and accusing them of being part of the white conspiracy. keep in mind the police chief in charlottesville is an african-american replacing the previous police chief that was an african-american. there's a lot of hypocrisy involved in what a lot of the marches are doing today.>>

russians able to tolerate really almost indulge themselves in overcoming western pain.regimes like north korea have reacted to financial sanctions when they have been put on banks they use to launder money. if you cut off their piggy bank then the regimes used to support themselves it does have an effect. but this broad use of sanctions against russia where every week it is something new and congress is contemplating even more coming down the pike. it's okay to cause painful russia just don't expect to get anything from them in response. eric: you do not think putin will ever change, he is who he is. >> i think he reacts to real world factors. again, arming ukrainian opponents and things like that. ultimately, he just did not want nato and their own political activities coming up against his border. that's why, i do not agree with or justify with what he did but taking small parts of georgia and ukraine is what he did to keep the countries from joining nato because he can't get into nato without an unresolved border dispute.

9:49 am
if there was a commitment to duty come away to so much of this again make their way into the press before the fbi was finished. arthel: i'm sorry, emily, are you telling me that the idea between the house judiciary committee's reasoning or possibly subpoenaing these people to speak with them, to be interviewed by them, is to be able to have them on record in front of everyone to highlight inconsistencies and what they have said in the past? >> absolutely that is one major point or the second major point would be a whole bunch of questions that arose, for example, from the coffeeshop meeting. what was on the memory stick the pastor glenn to bruce ohr. did the fisa court know the information it was relying on from the operation was after ohr had been -- steele had been dismissed. the transfer of information, the obtaining of information, the verification and what if

anything was relied upon into the court and again how much was related to the press and why ultimately. arthel: so emily, all of this is taking place under the glare of the molar investigation amid vertical division, coupled with those who support the special counsel's investigation and those who want to discredit it. so how will each side views the steele dossier to bolster their argument, both sides? the >> the bmj is using it as again they want -- they don't want any type of information. we heard talk that maybe the prosecution should be declassified so that everyone can see anything with transparency. they keep calling 25 that would pierce the investigation qualification essentially and would then be pierced. on the other side, they argue the same thing but in the opposite that it's already been obvious from the beginning. what this intelligence gathering, you have shot yourself in the foot essentially

for your credibility to begin with and the more you read sr request to discuss says congress, the more that you are not to be believed when he do testify. why the resistance? remember, their overarching position is that his oversight of the fbi's oversight of the doj. so there is a check in now and fear that ultimately everyone talks about -- triggered emily come i'm sorry we are up against a heartbreak. i'm cutting you off. thank you for being here next time we will have a more balanced analysis. we appreciate you, though. thank you very much and we will be right back. d a good sport... ...and became a second-generation firefighter. but i couldn't bear my diabetic nerve pain any longer. so i talked to my doctor, and he prescribed lyrica. nerve damage from diabetes cause diabetic nerve pain. lyrica is fda approved to treat this pain from moderate to even severe diabetic nerve pain. lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts or actions. tell your doctor right away if you have these,
