>> this is a fox news alert. dueling rallies in washington d.c. in charlottesville virginia. on the first anniversary of the night the right rally that left three people in charlottesville dead and fractured a nation. over race issues. we are continuing to watch the events in washington where a so-called tunite the right two rally is underway. we are in washington with counted imitations but first we start with peter ducey. covering the so-called unite

the right rally in the nations capital. how does it look so far, peter? reporter: the night the right two white civil rights rally as it was billed was very lightly attended. if you look behind us here, there are thousands of people with a variety of different signs and causes represented. but they have been told apparently in the past two minutes that because of severe weather in the area, some thunder and lightning, all of this is being shut down. thunder and lightning came through about 20 minutes ago. no one really left but it has started raining steadily and now you're starting to see folks leaving because not everyone has umbrella. apparently one of the camera positions the police said they have five minutes in the have to clear out. it may be the end of what was at times, a chaotic scene. the "unite the right" rally started essentially when the

group of about two dozen, maybe a little bit more white nationalists arrived on a metro train from the foggy bottom metro station and escorted by police through the streets of washington d.c.. 23rd street over towards pennsylvania avenue and then that is where they stayed. as they were being escorted through the streets, the group, the counter protesters around them, the group got bigger and bigger and bigger. and it really started to snowball. there is a little bit of a commotion once they got to the turn to get to pennsylvania avenue because the only one the police wanted to let through war these unite the right two protesters. they got there and they stayed on pennsylvania avenue even though they were pretty close to pennsylvania avenue and lafayette park which had a permit to occupy for two hours for a rally that they were calling a white civil rights

rally. everyone trying to drown them out. >> this unite the right movement. they wanted to replay their rally, if you will in charlottesville virginia, the site of last years violence. but they were not given a permit this year. that is why they moved it to washington d.c.. right? >> right. and again, they had the event but it was very lightly attended. and again, if there are multiple thousands of protesters here, there are dozens if not i 100 protesters for every person who showed up for the unite the right rally. >> you have to believe that police are very happy that there was a rainstorm this year. peter doocy we will check back in with you just a bit. thanks. griff jenkins is now live at the counter protest in
2:04 pm
washington. known as the "shut it down" movement. what's going on there? reporter: it is getting a little excited because it looks like now kessler is coming up. we heard the sirens of the police escort. you can see i'm not sure whether he stopped speaking but clearly someone is coming out and they believe it could be related to jason kessler and unite the right. this is the antifa folks, it spontaneously grew here. we see some things being thrown towards the police now. as you look in here it has been peaceful so far but it has quickly turned into a little bit of a flashpoint. we are here on pennsylvania avenue and 17th. this is where kessler went in and clearly you have several hundred of the antifa protesters standing here, wanting to confront kessler when he leaves. and again, it has been peaceful so far. this clearly is a confrontation that the counter protesters wanted to engage in to let
2:05 pm
their message be told. there antifascist, the message is not entirely directed towards kessler. it is also directed to the trump administration who they perceive as fascist. as well as a law enforcement. but right now, this as you can see is tangled up. it is all about whether or not kessler is coming out here and antifa trying to let their message be heard loud and clear. there was a smoke bomb toast earlier but it was sort of a nonevent. we have a bit of a chant, you can hear them. the rain is starting to set in, it is moderate but not clearing anyone out really. as in terms of the car which really is all about 500 to
2:06 pm
1000. >> mostly for testing against the "unite the right" movement were they fans of jason kessler and his organization? >> these are all protesters, counter protesters against "unite the right". there against jason kessler. there against the trump administration. many of them were part of the gathering that we saw about three or 4000 people at freedom plaza where we started a little after noon. this group is sort of the antifa, you can see them dressed in all black. what caused this by the way, was a siren and a strong police presence started to come up pennsylvania avenue as our viewers remember some years ago, the close pennsylvania avenue to street traffic and so dignitaries and vips often come in. it is known as the westside to the white house. and so the police, law
2:07 pm
enforcement have freedom of movement. none of us can get past the street here 17th and pennsylvania. as we hear the motorcycle escorts coming through, it looks like they are trying to bring someone through this area. they were just seeing a score of water bottles and an egg. as i mentioned, a smoke bomb earlier. there is some sort of fireworks going off. we can see it looks like a roman candle being fired. i'm not sure that the police are going to appreciate that. again, the security of the secret service and other law enforcement is always typically high this close to the white house. and the so far, what is remarkable, john, about the story has been the clear determined restraint of law enforcement to a gathering. when i was covering this for the inauguration, the police were much less tolerant of gatherings, of antifa. that is just a firecracker. someone has firecrackers out here. so far, law enforcement really not responding.
2:08 pm
just what appears to be the game plan of securing the "unite the right" folks and to do their rally. but this is probably going to start to get a little bit more colorful if they do indeed try to bring kessler and his couple of dozen supporters out this gait. because the numbers are disproportionately in favor of the counter protesters. >> it is fair to say there's an awful lot of emotion in that crowd there but not a lot of violence so far. reporter: that is exactly right. there has been no violence. again, the message of the counter protesters was nonviolent. antifa who i have covered, they do not want to engage with us but i've had off camera conversations. they do not want to be provoked but if they are they want to stand up to anti-fascism. that is what played out a week
2:09 pm
or so again in portland when they clashed with law enforcement. there is a little rumbling of storms that complicates things perhaps but there has not been any acts of violence yet. really between these counter protesters or law enforcement or anyone else for that matter. i should point out, there was a couple of folks that would perhaps be part of kessler is group or certainly wanted to voice their opinion which was counter to this group that believes the trump administration is fascist. it was more of a national political debate. it got heated up but no fists exchange, just a few expletives and it calmed down peered so far it has been an expression of freedom of speech. right now we are certainly packed in here, 17 pennsylvania avenue. jon: you are not that far from the white house. reporter: that is exactly right. literally you know, 100 yards this way is the entrance, the
2:10 pm
north gate entrance to the white house. the building here is the part of the white house complex where people that work there have an office. this entrance right here, the guardhouse, is a secret service guardhouse. it would typically let people come through that have a pass to go down pennsylvania avenue. it is also open on the weekend. people come down here, go for a jog, you can walk past the white house. tourists are here in large numbers. a tad bit of perspective, if i turned back this way, you can see just a little bit. obviously a lot of more antifa folks they blocked the street with dump trucks. beyond that there is a large bike presence of police officers, there is a group of black lives matter folks from d.c. that have turned out here they are pretty strong but on the other side of this barricade, the dump trucks, is the d.c. police and will move
2:11 pm
back this way. try to give a little bit of some perspective as we stand right in the middle of pennsylvania avenue and 17th. this is antifa trying to block an exit by kessler. and this is of course, pennsylvania avenue where kessler came in. you can see for as far as the eye goes, police presence standing by. if indeed, they bring them out. one might question the wisdom for law enforcement to bring them out through this crowd of antifa gathering. it almost ensures a confrontation. but they brought them in this way maybe it is the way to bring them back out. we will take another look as he wrangles down and they are waiting for what is coming next. jon: perhaps you will
2:12 pm
experience what peter doocy did. the rain fell on the crowd where he is reporting. it kind of dispersed everybody. maybe that will happen here. let's hope so. griff jenkins, we will check with you a bit. joining us now, the deputy managing editor of the weekly standard, he has been a year. hard to believe since we saw the violence in the charlottesville virginia that horrified so many people and left three people dead. what has changed since them, kelly? it brought racial issues oiling back into the american lexicon. have things improved? >> you know, i think some things have and some things haven't. it has been a year since his very inflammatory event but these racial issues are ones that have been simmering since before this country was founded. talk about centuries of tensions and issues. those are not going to be solved over the course of one year. but he will say, i think that we are seeing i think, the white supremacists thought they could normalize themselves.
2:13 pm
they could show that we are here, we are out, proud, happy white supremacists. pay attention to us. what you saw at laster were people taking pictures and charlottesville of the white supremacists marching. people with tiki torches and posted them on social media and said can you help us identify these people? once they were, some of them lost jobs, some were shunned in the communities. it showed americans on the whole do not support this sort of racism. and they do not support white supremacists. they support the ideals america was founded on. even though there have been mixed implementation of the ideals we will say through the years but those are the ideals americans always strive towards. those are the ideals most americans support. i think that's why you see laster charlottesville you had hundreds of people protesting in favor of white supremacy. this year you have got maybe a couple dozen. i think it is a big change. jon: the organizations have splintered to some extent fractured the media companies, google, facebook and so forth. they have gone after some of
2:14 pm
the memberships kind of put the kibosh on some recruitment tools. so perhaps it is not surprising that this year's event seems to be so much smaller. >> you know jon i have mixed feelings about that. i think if a private company doesn't want to be a part of this sort of hate and this sort of attitude they have every right. of course, to say we don't want to do with you. for example, last year charlottesville unite the right rally -- i worry about forcing people like this underground. i think it was good we had some media coverage. people can argue how much they deserve but it's good to bring this into the open so that they can be debated and people, young people who are a bit nacve, not really very worldly can see that these ideas are not popular and these ideas get you nowhere. and so i think it's a bit of a balance to be struck there
2:15 pm
between not wanting to give these people coverage and at the same time wanting to make sure that they are out in the open and we can identify who these people are spewing hate and make sure that people watching know that is not tolerated on the whole in america. jon: symbolism is important. torches have been banned in washington. there is to be nobody carrying torches i imagine. there might be one or two that get stuck in there. but at the same time, you see in his live shot from the camera that there are still people, not necessarily in the white supremacist movement but in the antifa movement that are wearing masks. i wonder what that says about the state of things in the country right now. >> is a good question. if you strongly feel we have strong feelings about a belief we have values that you want to talk about, let the public know about them, why not save them openly? and so you do kind of wonder about that and you wonder, some of these people in the past
2:16 pm
were born masks do it because they intend to get violent and they don't want to be identified. i have to say, we were talking earlier with reporters heather hasn't been any violence so far. the police really took a lesson from last year. i think perhaps the d.c. police are little more familiar with this sort of protest than those in charlottesville. they actually said it was the top priority today to keep the groups apart. and that was their goal so that they would not get violent because is not going to get violent usually when you have a bunch of people who agree with each other. the counter protesters are probably not going to get violent if there is a confrontation but that's why i'm curious to see what will happen because a reporter mentioned it looks like there may be a confrontation. i have to say i'll be very surprised if the police let that happen given that they are planning to make sure that did not happen because that is when violence is more likely to take place. jon: a lot of people i think were surprise, myself included
2:17 pm
last year. you say it goes back generations, really prior to the founding of the nation. in the years since, has anything gotten better in your view? >> i do. i think people are more willing to talk about these issues. more willing to recognize that there are problems in places. i've known people, especially conservatives that for years that there was no racism anymore in america. and on the whole in some places and in some situations there is. i think events have taken place over the last year have made people realize hey, i didn't realize what it was like to be black and get stopped by a police officer. of course the situations are always more complicated than they first look. and there is no one-size-fits-all for every confrontation. between minority and a police officer. i think people think a little bit more about it and to think about what can i do to help bring people together?
2:18 pm
because that is one of the other things i think last year showed us. most people think americans, we are all in this together. i think a lot of people did not know that not everybody feels that way. i think there is a bit of a push among some people to try and bring people together. i am not sure the protesters who are out today if they have that attitude or not but i think a lot of americans themselves would like to see more unity in the country. jon: kelly, thank you very much for being with us right now. >> thank you. jon: we are continuing to watch protest and counter protests just outside the white house. this is taking place live right now in washington d.c.. a block or so from the white house. counter protesters had gathered in large numbers to slam the "unite the right" movement which is trying to hold i guess an echo of what happened one year ago in charlottesville virginia. they were denied a permit to march in charlottesville so they moved their protest to dc.
2:19 pm
it is as though reporters have told you, quite small. not many people showed up for this unite the right two protest. they are severely outnumbered by the counter protesters and that is a crowd we seem to be watching right now. we'll continue to keep an eye on what's going on in washington as well as charlottesville, virginia. ptbe back with more coverage in just a moment. including nasal congestion, which most pills don't. and all from a gentle mist you can barely feel. flonase sensimist. with our largest variety of crab all year! like new crabfest combo. your one chance to have new jumbo snow crab with tender dungeness crab. or try crab lover's dream. but hurry in.
