all of you for watching. i hope to see you right here, next week. >> a fox news alert at the top of the hour. president trump yet again criticizing the rush investigation. denying the white house counsel don mcgahn turned and appeared welcome to "americas news headquarters" i am eric shawn. >> i am arthel neville peer welcome everyone. the president launching an a tweet storm that don mcgahn, top white house lawyer gave robert mueller some 30 hours of testimony over the last nine months. mr. trump saying he let the interviews happen because he has nothing to hide adding quote - demanded transparency so that his rigged and
1:01 pm
disgusting witchhunt can come to a close. so many lives have been ruined over nothing. mccarthyism at its worst. yet they refuse look at the real climb on the -- the real crime on the other side. ellison barber is live with more. reporter: the president is leaving bedminster shortly to go back to dc. he tweeted about the report in the new york times today. he says more tweets have made it very clear he is upset with this article.he says this in one tweet. the failing new york times wrote a story that medicine at the white house counsel had turned on the president when in fact, it is just the opposite. the two fake reporters knew this. "the new york times" says they stand by the report appeared in a statement the attorney says president trump through counsel
1:02 pm
declined -- so mr. "the journal editorial report" to answer questions ultimately and honestly is any person interviewed by federal investigators most. those familiar with the investigation confirmed to fox news that don mcgahn as reported spoke to the team on three different occasions. the president's outside legal counsel told "sunday morning futures" that the president has no reason to worry about the testimony. >> back in january he went to the grand jury in any of those 2 and a half days he says the president committed a crime. he's going to sit there for the next six months working for the president who committed a crime? it is absurd. "the new york times" uses very the idea that he cooperated extensively. sure he did! it is a complicated thing. we are confident that he said nothing wrong. about the president. reporter: according to the new
1:03 pm
york times don mcgahn and his lawyer began cooperated with special counsel because it is what the president's legal team at the time wanted. but they thought it was odd and quote - feared mr. trump was setting up mr. don mcgahn to take the blame for any possible illegal acts of obstruction. the times reports the pair devised their own strategy to do as much as possible to cooperate with mr. mueller and the rest of the team. we reach out to the special counsel on the reporting and so far they declined to comment. arthel: thank you ellison barber. eric: for more and thus less bring in a senior senate reporter for roll call. is this revelation a bombshell or really much to do about nothing? >> it is a bombshell if he in fact is told robert mueller over the team something that could be criminal behavior by even president trump or any of his other aids regarding a
1:04 pm
potential obstruction of justice case. either with respect to someone like the firing of james comey the fbi director or if there's something regarding the recusal by the attorney general jeff sessions. that could prove criminal. it's not clear whether or not there will be some bombshell in it could be a long time before we find out.eric: according to the time zone reporting they say there was none.he does not say that. let me quote - you, it is down in the body of the story maybe it should have been the story. it wasn't pretty says mr. don mcgahn later how mr. trump tried to ensure control the investigation giving investigators a mix of information potentially damaging and favorable to the present pretty never saw mr. trump go beyond the legal authorities although the limits of executive power are murky says the times. so what does it mean if don mcgahn spends 30 hours talking
1:05 pm
about how the president is raging against the russian probe, how he does not like jeff sessions and is angry at jeff sessions for recusing himself, etc. but quote - he never saw mr. trump go beyond his legal authorities. which one would presume would mean he never saw any criminal action of any sort by the president of the united states. >> right. one would assume that is the case. i think the question will be whether or not there was anything in the testimony of don mcgahn, in conversations with special counsel that led them to overturn other stones that were not necessarily anything within the 30 hours. the other thing i would throw in here is, it remains to be seen i think, and we may or may not ever really find out how much contemporaneous doc -- documentations may be sent over. it will be a lot of more
1:06 pm
paperwork i am sure. this is really what the team has been doing and why we probably will not see a resolution anytime soon despite what the president would like to see. eric: so there is marine one at the airport in new jersey with the president preparing to depart. from spending the weekend at bedminster and going down to joint base andrews back to the white house. let's pick that up because another part of the article fascinating because they insinuate and suggest that the reason that mcgahn cooperated and had some interviews was that he was trying to quote - protect himself so he is not like another john dean. what you make of that as a opposed to the president saying he directed mcgahn to go testify or not testify but at least speak to investigators extensively because according to the president he has nothing to hide. >> i'll be curious to see
1:07 pm
whether or not mr. mcgahn also speaking to the investigators on capitol hill, whether or not he has also talked to the senate intelligence committee for instance. but also, remember that technically, mr. mcgahn is a government employee. not just technically, he is in fact the white house counsel. not on donald trump 's personal payroll or the corporation payroll per se, he's a federal employee. so there are different standards that he would need to meet in any case. even though in some respects he is the president's lawyer. but it is not a campaign job or something for the president's businesses. eric: that is very important distinction compared to let's say, rudy giuliani who is the president's personal lawyer. mcgahn really is lawyer for the office of the presidency. as you bring up, what type of
1:08 pm
different standards when he then have? he would not be able to stop maybe subpoenas, he would not be able to totally ignore requests from capitol hill or from investigators because he has that duty. under government job and not being the private attorney for the president. >> and i think the question will be particularly if he will be staying in this job for the foreseeable future. based on the president's tweets and we've heard so far it does not sound like he will be kicked out of the door over this new york times report. so i think that will be really the question is, how much more will he have to disclose and what happens if there is in fact a fight over subpoenas for the president or those of his closest advisors. even how much he can coordinate with someone like mayor giuliani on how to deal with that. eric: the article also points out that robert mueller says he does not believe the sitting
1:09 pm
president can be indicted. but certainly, he can write a report that can be referred to capitol hill for possible impeachment. if that is at all warranted. we shall see. and the mayor had a good point saying that mcgahn stayed for six months of the white house so clearly, they are standing behind him. niels lesniewski, good to see you. thank you as we watch the president, marine one. he prepares to go back to the people's house. the white house. thank you.arthel: new reaction from john brennan. after president trump decided to revoke his security clearance last week. as the white house reportedly looks into rescinding more security clearances, current or former officials, the president warning that demoted doj official bruce or could be next. today, mr. brennan saying that he may take legal action against mr. trump. >> if my clearances and my reputation as i'm being pulled through the mud now, if that is the price we are going to pay
1:10 pm
to prevent donald trump from doing this against other people, to me it is a small price to pay.i'm going to do whatever i can personally to try to prevent these abuses in the future. and if it means going to court, i will do that. arthel: from her nose go to washington and bring in jennifer griffin. >> the former cia director, john brennan took aim at the president just days after having his lifetime security clearance revoked by the white house. as you mentioned, former and current intelligence and justice department official the president is targeting. >> it is for those that both in the government outside that if you cross him, if you speak out against him, he is going to use whatever tools might have at his disposal to punish you. and so i think this is yet another example of his egregious abuse of power and authority. immediately, it brings back the
1:11 pm
whole concept of the enemies list. you know under president nixon and even before that, you know in the early 50s when mccarthy and that era where the administration starts putting together lists of individuals that do not agree with them. >> admiral mullen that served as former chairman of the joint chief said he does not agree with the president pulling the clearance of brennan but added a word of caution to intelligence officials about being so vocal against the president. >> he has been incredibly critical of the president and i think that has put him in a political place which actually does more damage for the intelligence community which is apolitical. even as he is retired. i really do not support him being as critical of the president has he has been. >> another for former cia
1:12 pm
director stepped forward to defend brennan. >> if somebody uses classified information or reveals classified information, or misuses that in a way while he is exercising a viewpoint, then i think that crosses the line. but that was not the case here. >> this firestorm is far from over with the president turning to pull the security clearances of eight more former and one current intelligence and justice department employee. who have been critical of the president and involved in the russia investigation. arthel: jennifer griffin, thank you very much. eric: back in washington the jurors have deliberations tomorrow is that paul manafort trial was into the fourth week. the former trump campaign chairman faces 18 counts of bank and tax fraud. the jury went home on friday without reaching a verdict for the second straight day. it turns out even if paul
1:13 pm
manafort is acquitted in this case, the legal battle is only half way over. garrett tenney explains. reporter: it is back to work tomorrow for the jury in the paul manafort trial after t.s. ellis iii told him not to speak with anyone about the case and put it out of their mind until monday morning. this will be day three of jury deliberation. where they review all evidence included testimony from 27 witnesses and hundreds of exhibits prosecutors presented included financial statements, loan applications, tax documents emails and photographs. during the first day of deliberation the jury passed a note to the judge asking four questions including please define reasonable doubt. to that, judge ellis responded quote - the government is not required to prove the defendant guilty beyond all possible doubt. only beyond all reasonable doubt. doubt based on reason. with no verdict after 14 hours of deliberation, paul manafort 's attorneys are feeling confident about their chances. >> are you feeling going to the weekend?
1:14 pm
>> very good. a fair trial that judge ellis insured and mr. manafort -- >> are they thinking that deliberating longer favors your client? of course i do. and he does. >> they do believe that this is the best and strongest while we do not know for certain we will likely start to find out in a few weeks because next month the former trump campaign chairman is scheduled to go on trial in d.c. on separate charges including witness tampering, conspiracy to defraud the u.s. and failing to register as a foreign agent. eric: thank you so much. arthel: a shark attacks and man this week and now the beach where it happened is closed until further notice. we have a live report ahead. plus, the family of an american journalist kidnapped in syria is speaking out. they believe he is still alive and the federal government agrees his father will join us next. from any one else. why accept it from an allergy pill? flonase relieves sneezing, itchy, watery eyes and a runny nose, plus nasal congestion,

china according to numbers. industrial production has fallen and now it is plateauing a low level. people are selling the currency. eric: that is president trump of course answer the question of the cabinet meeting last week and answering national economic council director larry kudlow. saying that china is feeling the impact of u.s. tariffs. his comments come as chinese and u.s. officials plan trade talks next week. after that shocking pentagon report that claims china's military is likely training for airstrikes on u.s. targets by increasing the range of their bombers. what we do and what does all this mean for u.s. china relations? join us we have a senior research fellow and asia studies at the heritage foundation. welcome. in terms of trade, beijing really is now feeling the pressure. >> i think that is a bit misguided. china has had this economic stagnation coming for years now. it is actually kind of wrong to
1:31 pm
apply the tariffs alone are causing china all this economic harm. later this week we will, china is having delegation of the united states to talk about the outstanding trade issues. while it will not necessarily put a stop to the 16 billion worth of tariffs united states will start collecting as of thursday, it could potentially help put a pause to the 200 billion worth of goods we might start to tax as early as september. eric: have so far, what's new tariffs go into effect on thursday as you say, it is $50 billion. tariffs so far. as you say potentially 200 billion down the line and you know they are not really taking it sitting down. they been talking about retaliating themselves. >> you are right. it is only 50 billion again from our point if you include the retaliatory tariffs from china, it is 100 billion. the united states, with her and 200 billion, the present even said he could go as far as every single item that americans buy from china peer which is $506 billion worth of
1:32 pm
goods in 2017. john of course does not buy that many goods from the united states. the cant reciprocate to that level but they would target at least in response the 200 billion, half of every product they buy. you have this emerging trade war and hopefully, the meetings that president trump and present xi jinping later this year will put a stop to piraino we need to lay the groundwork. the meetings this week are the right step in laying the foundation for the talks. eric: certainly the chinese do not need this. they do not need any more terrorists. as you say and point out, their economy has been slowing down. we were seeing these videos of empty cities and empty factories. >> you are right. that is what you get when you have decades of state guided markets. that is socialism, that is communism 101.
1:33 pm
that's what happens when you have these things. regarding the currency, both by some measures both the u.s. dollar in the chinese have been overvalued for many years now. so in response to this outstanding trade issue and of course the domestic economic issues for china, the chinese people, the bank is letting the value depreciate naturally. while the united states dollar is a core strengthening because of the strong economy that we have. and so you have a divergence to the extremes of both of the currencies. eric: does not give us leverage? over them? because we have the dollar going up and yet there dollar went down nine percent. i'm in the chinese had to look at this because we are basically the big boys on the block when it comes to this situation. >> you know it is not that simple. a stronger dollar means americans buy more. which means we have a larger trade deficit. if your trade deficit is the one thing that you really want
1:34 pm
to attract then it is not necessarily good for this. for china itself, is not necessarily against the u.s. dollar or do evaluating that we should be worried about against all the other currencies in the world.as the u.s. dollar, we are strengthened but there dollar is devaluing. i think for china it's a big factor but so much more it is structural reform, things that the u.s. government actually truly wants from china. but you know i think the trade were on top of all that kind of makes it harder to really get into the meat of the discussions that again, hopefully the talk this week will lead a path to that. eric: we will see what happens with the talks and of course, if the president's me by november maybe they will have it straightened out. finally quickly, this report for the pentagon. the chinese actually training pilots and increased the range of their bombers to potentially target u.s. assets in the pacific. that seems like a real
1:35 pm
potential threat. >> you know, for my understanding it is not on natural for a country to target potential adversaries as scenarios. potentially one day you might have this that they might have to address and so the united states, we recognize china as potential security threat. the same with russia. and so you know we train in ways that potentially be able to alleviate the threats or concerns that we would have one day. right now the u.s. government is investing in the military. we're going to be tough on china on these things going forward. i'm not worried about that front i am worried about the trade war at this point. eric: c have the trade war and election interference, john bolton warning about china election interference. riley walters, thank you for joining us. arthel: a shark attacked a man last week and the beach is not
