"the five" is next. ♪ >> dana: hello, everyone. i am dana perino with emily campagna, juan williams, lawrence williams, juan williams and greg gutfeld. this is "the five" ." the war of words hits a whole new level as president trump unleashes on the media. the president slamming much of that press on twitter today is "totally dishonest." he says don't care for the truth, writing fake books and using anonymous sources that are pure fiction. president trump blasts carl bernstein. the president saying that the

network has been caught in a major ally. cnn and bernstein firing back at the president saying that they stand by their reporting. lots of tweets overnight. >> greg: i am glad he was tweeting about this and not about the funeral. trump is like a heckler behind the dugout. he can sense the central of the picture. in this case, cnn. he won't stop until he throws the mitt down and runs to the stands to fight. he is giving cnn the cnn treatment because they made that meeting story into relentless bombshell. every newscaster was having a conniption about it. now that story seems to be falling apart and trump is giving cnn the relentless story and he will not go. i think it is even stephen. whenever i get a little bit upset or annoyed about the tweeting, i remember the media spent decades punching at conservatives.

probably since the vietnam war. now somebody is plunging and they are crying foul. it's hard for me to sympathize with the media when they are complaining because the left and they have been interchangeable since vietnam. we are going to need a lot of trump tweets to even the score. >> dana: there might be a lot where that came from. >> juan: even if i was on the right, i would say so rush limbaugh to william f buckley didn't exist? no conservative thought. >> greg: nothing like this. coming at you. twitter is a new vehicle. to me, was incredible come in the middle of a funeral for a statesman, john mccain, what is our president doing? he is not saying my thoughts, my prayers. no, he is attacking cnn. he is so obsessed with them that right in the middle of a funera funeral. it's not only the story,

lawrence. >> this has been the media narrative that they are there to hold the president accountable. part of the reason they are losing credibility with the american people is because they don't tell the truth sometimes. it's a simple fix. tell the american people, issue a retraction. they didn't do that. >> dana: cnn says there is standing by their story and i imagine that that's because they say they have another source. it might not be true. i don't imagine they are totally lying about it. >> emily: my issue is that of course the president can take issue with any organization that he thinks is skewing coverage. at a certain point, it is beneath the office of the president. it is detracting from what's really the story which is the fact that this large-scale investigation being undertaken right now with our tax dollars,

and it's either pursuing various conduct towards furthering the various conduct. we have a ton of unanswered questions about intelligence gathering, protocol, and breaks in chain of command and the interplay between the doj and fbi in congress and this administration and whether uncorroborated, unverified information is being relied upon by law enforcement and potentially the courts and then being leaked by officials in the government but are rogue. these are the larger questions. when the story becomes the social media warfare or media warfare, it does everything a disservice. >> juan: it's all a great conspiracy. if you're going to say so many judges, the fbi run by a republican, apartment just is run by a republican. here's the thing. he is going on about alternative facts, fake news. gee, i wonder what the fbi had to say this week when he picked up on some conservatives reports. hillary clinton's emails were hacked by the chinese. fbi comes out and says, i guess

it is a political risk for themselves given this presidents antics and says no, there is no evidence hillary clinton's emails were ever hacked. >> dana: by the chinese. >> juan: then he goes after lester holt. >> greg: god forbid lester holt. >> juan: this is the first time we've ever heard. who has trouble telling the truth? i think it is not nbc, not cnn. it's one guy named donald trump. >> greg: most of america understands trump plays fast and loose with the facts. he is generally directionally right. >> lawrence: they all exaggerate every detail. the question, is it the media's job to be doing this? cnn literally calls him a racist every night. the difference with donald trump is that he responds. his base loves it.

there are times i would agree that the president gets off-base with his tweets. i think we can agree with that but when it comes to the media, it's a winning issue for the president. that's why he continues to fight it. >> juan: i don't know that it's a winning issue. we will see. to me it's like he's a snowflake president. he has a grievance and he can't get beyond. >> greg: i hope he is watching. i feel a tweet coming on, juan. i have a prediction. 1970s will be known for disco. the '80s known for betamax. >> dana: reagan. >> greg: big hair. the 90s was grunge. i think the teens will be known for trump's tweets. this is the thing everyone looks back at. >> dana: the decade of twitter. >> greg: everyone will be laughing. it will be either something that came and went or is established. >> dana: on your podcast yesterday, you interviewed --

remember, he also used to be his own anonymous source here in new york city. >> emily: i think this is why he is used to it. he's used to driving the narrative and asking these questions i don't -- there's a certain amount of decorum associated with the office that we would like him to hold but i don't understand why challenging the coverage means he should have a target on him for doing so. regardless of the message. i think it's important to ask those questions and for him to say why aren't you covering it fairly? why am i not getting the benefit of the doubt? >> dana: twitter is a great tool for him. he could've tweeted "check this out, 51% of workers in america say they are happy." first time and i don't know how many years. why doesn't he do that? >> greg: because it is not him. trump was radicalized by something. he was a democrat for a long time. he was pro-choice, liberal and many things. he was radicalized. what was he radicalized by?

awesome. fox news. when fox news happened, he started watching fox news. >> dana: and the world starts to make sense to him. >> greg: all he is doing is what we do, which is we bash the media. he has turned the white house into kind of like an alternative fox show where he sits there. >> juan: i thought you were trying to help him. >> greg: i am saying that it is kind of refreshing. >> juan: refreshing? you know what it reminds me of? you know what chuck todd nbc said. one of those guys going down the sidewalk mumbling to himself except he has a million-plus twitter followers. >> greg: just jealous of his hair. >> lawrence: part of this is that the president once had a great relationship with the media. and they turned on him. all the way into the primaries. they wanted him to win. >> dana: they wanted him to do interviews. >> lawrence: everyone screaming to cover him and everyone one of the latest

the fact that the president pushed the decision making capabilities in the hands of the tactical and strategic commanders and that's why now in afghanistan, the strategy is surgical air strikes and counterintelligence. it is working, and there are ebbs and flows and some weeks are better than others and after 17 years it's a bit exhausting but members of the military referred to it as mowing the lawn. they say it's our constant presence and our efforts against -- the counterterrorism efforts. we are supporting the afghan government and to maintain that chaos between al qaeda, isis, the taliban, and the afghan government. from what we have an inherited, we are in the best position possible even in the face of good and bad weeks. it's because of pushing the autonomy to the commanders. >> juan: here's what i would say. thank you, obama. and thank you, deep state. >> greg: thank you,

>> juan: the table is about to explode. here is the topic: is the white house about to wage war on pot? according to a buzzfeed report, the trump administration starting a committee to counter pro-marijuana messaging. 14 federal agencies working on collecting data showing the negative aspects of weed in an effort to try to balance what they think is an unbalanced public debate on the drug. some activists, some democratic lawmakers in states where recreational park is now illegal, they are pushing back, calling it a misguided smear or squad led by president trump. what do you say? >> emily: here are my two biggest issues. the first is that the reconciliation between the states and federal approach is needing to be addressed. there's too much confusion with law enforcement, especially end with citizens. obviously we have a bipartisan bill but spent introducing his making it through the senate and i'm all for that. my second biggest issue is a

waste of resources the criminal justice system being spent on this. drug offenders, 10% are cannabis and their sentences are statistically the shortest. think about how much we are wasting arresting, prosecuting these low-level, nonviolent -- to put them behind bars. to me the larger conversation, the white house's commitment to criminal justice reform, it doesn't make sense with this coming out and as senator gardner said, putting the catch up back in the bottle. it's too late for that. i think moving forward, it would behoove us to be as efficient as possible and to realize the amount of waste and abuse pursuing what really is a nonripple effect drug.

>> juan: emily says why is this a priority? why is the white house putting energy and thought of 14 federal agencies on the case? >> dana: because the president wants him to. >> lawrence: i don't think this is the president. i think this is jeff sessions. jeff sessions hates weed. if you are anti-opioid, you should be pro-marijuana. >> dana: the picture behind your head. this is great, lawrence. >> greg: really a pothead. [laughter] >> lawrence: the president as a practical person. he realizes we should be spending -- he is pro-veteran. this has helped veteran suicide in many states where it's been passed. he is anti-opioid. the president is a logical person but his attorney general

is anti-criminal justice reform and antiweed. >> dana: the president is all of those things. but also if you listen to the president's speech, he doesn't like drugs. he doesn't do them. he doesn't think it's a good idea. he thinks there's better ways -- >> juan: i don't think he drinks alcohol. >> dana: this whole committee thing, it wasn't just about turning back all those very progressive smart things, especially for veterans and treating ptsd. it's about not having any counter programming to say smoking marijuana, it's not like taking a vitamin. >> greg: i have to interject. i have six pages of notes. just because you don't like something doesn't make it wrong. number two, the white house does believe the prevailing pro-marijuana narrative is too one-sided. that's after 70 years of this being one-sided in the opposite direction. the demon weed, a gateway drug.

a lot of this stuff has no statistics. we are trying to reach a reasonable midpoint where we are with alcohol. we know it offers benefits but it can be abused. you shouldn't be smoking pot in the morning. treat it like a martini after work. once you are successful so you are not a dirt bag. everything with benefits that offers relief in life alleviates suffering. whether it's opioids or marijuana, it can be abused. the state shouldn't be involved in legislating your oblivion. as a human being, you have an individual right to ease your own suffering. it's a mistake. i think this is more sessions than trump. i agree with you. i think -- i don't see much evidence that the legalization has led to more violent behavior. most of the violent behavior increases are in chicago and baltimore, which is not about pot. >> dana: or its about fentanyl. >> greg: drug warfare which is based on illegal drugs. >> dana: there are

communities, especially where i went to college in pueblo, colorado, it hasn't been all sunshine and daisies when they moved forward on legalization. >> greg: it would be if you smoked. >> dana: might be. i asked lawrence in the break and he asked me not to ask him but i'm going to ask him. a little bit of counter programming is good. i understand the whole thing about 70 years of one way. they are also finding some really great benefits. but if you look at what taxpayers are having to pay for increased hospital stays. >> greg: we do that with alcohol. >> dana: right. should we add another one? >> lawrence: increasing the hospitals? >> greg: it is not killing anyone. i don't think you could find a single overdose. maybe viewers can find one. i don't think there is a marijuana overdose. >> emily: what deserves our

what is you guys' message? >> juan: strong message about the midterms. the thing you are picking up on, i think you are right, they compete in terms of the animosity towards trump. it's sad to say they imitate a lot of the trump-type behavior. trump, as in -- at his debates. he would talk about little marco and low energy. he might as well have said stop lying. you stop interrupting. it is schoolyard. i was hoping for a better debates. i thought this was not a great debate. this business about, how hot was the room? i want to know. how hot it was the room? it seems to me coming out of this, i thought cynthia nixon did a better job than i would have ever guessed. i was surprised. >> lawrence: mla, it didn't seem like the american people or new york residents got what they wanted in that debate. they didn't hear about what the

candidates were typically four. part of the whole trump the fact that i think people discount is that's real, that's him. that's who we is as a person. many other candidates in the republican process of trying to be like trump and are inauthentic, it didn't work for them. do you think it's gonna work for the democrats? >> emily: i don't. i hear what you're saying. as candidates are bringing up that strategy of who is more anti-trump, what happens to the voters if and when they get elected and if they are only statuses resistance, how can we rely on them to get anything done when know there has to be balance bargaining. when i watch the debate, it's like when you put your dog and a rabbit costume for halloween. it is still a dog. it's not a rabbit. that's how i feel about governor cuomo. democratic candidates being pushed more progressive because of their more progressive challengers. in reality, they are going to go

back. within two months of cynthia nixon declaring, cuomo reversed public positions on recreational marijuana and plastic bags in new york and public housing and restoring voter rights to felons. on these issues, at the same time threatening unions and community groups if they gave money to anyone supporting nixon. you are going to lose my number. you are still the entrenched politician these progressives are arguing against. you are still just the dog. you are not the rabbit costume. >> lawrence: we reported on uc berkeley telling kids -- >> dana: i don't think they got the memo that earlier this week there was an ap poll that said only 21% of democrats think that's a good idea. i think they waste their time on that but i get some press coverage. i make a prediction. i think this primary is going to be closer than people think. he gave her a chance to have a lot of headlines. the headlines for him were terrible. she got a ton of free airtime.

debates can move votes ready go back to new hampshire in 2016 when marco rubio and chris christie went at it. it hurt marco rubio in that debate. cuomo looks thin skinned and rusty. women have sometimes a hard time when they are up against a man because their voice drives people crazy. her voice does not drive people crazy. they are used to it from television and she has a lower register. it's an important thing for her. de blasio was able to go after cuomo and it was an effective attack on the subway system. she might do better than you think. >> greg: when you say they drive you crazy, they have to raise their voice to get above the man. >> dana: hillary clinton, sarah palin. women, when you get animated, you tend to increase your octave. >> greg: i was listening to andrew cuomo and trying to figure out who was this murder cuomo brother. that is like saying what is the

♪ >> we are all in big, big trouble. >> emily: outrage in alabama after games most of us grew up playing like dodgeball, tag, and musical chairs, told to be off limits. the state superintendent is trying to calm down angry parents saying it's up to public schools to decide their own physical education activities. apparently two years ago, the state of alabama issued guidance and said during physical education classes, you could not play tag and red rover and dodgeball. some of the reasons cited were it makes people feel uncomfortable.

they get hurt, they are left out, whatever. the superintendent was like, this wasn't on my watch. you do you. greg, growing up on the peninsula, what was recessed like? i can imagine you being a total maniac. >> greg: we were unusual school. we had a fight club. we would pick one child against another child in a bare-knuckled cage match. the one that survived could have lunch. it was ugly. only two kids made it out of that school. [laughter] i think they should change dodgeball so everybody gets a ball and instead of throwing it at people, you hug it in a dark room listening to soft jazz. >> emily: dana, what about you? what was your favorite recess activity? >> dana: i was with the smokers. no, i wasn't. mom, no.

>> greg: taking strange rights on planes? >> dana: do you remember tetherball? i liked it so much that my mom and dad put one in our backyard where we grew up. i loved foursquare. i also did love kickball. i was pretty fast. fast runner. >> emily: i can see that. lawrence, in dallas, what was the scene like for you? describe it. >> lawrence: we dominated in all sports. honestly, i think eliminating these activities is why the stress level for these kids are going up. they have no diversity. maybe you fall down and then scratch your name but you get back up and you go. right now everybody wants a participation trophy. everybody wants to be coddled. i think it is destroying the next generation. >> emily: in brooklyn, juan, set the scene.

what changes do you see? i know you love your grandkids and you talk about them a lot. what changes do you see between your three recess activities. >> juan: i think things are more organized. we see with what the alabama school district was trying to do. i liked dodgeball and red rover and all that. i thought it was fun. but i know people got embarrassed, even humiliated. once in a while, somebody would and up with a knot on their head because they got hit in the wrong spot or fell on their face. i don't know if it's because we are a more litigious society and the school district wants to protect itself. i don't think this is about kids being snowflakes. >> lawrence: yeah, it is. >> juan: kids would fight and kids still fight. i prefer things like races, stickball. >> dana: the other thing i

loved, the gymnastic bars, the ones you -- the solid one. i could do a grand daddy backflip. whatever. what is that called? it would give my mom a heart attack. the bottom was just gravel. >> juan: you know now they have, the ground is a rubbery, styrofoam. it does protect the kids. >> greg: i sleep in parks. i like that stuff.
