1:01 pm
obama hitting the stage of chants to yes we can as he spoke in california, unlike yesterday's speech the former president did not mention trump by name nor take specific shots at the current commander in chief, instead obama focused on the current divisive climate of politics saying democrats and specifically those running for seats in california could be the solution. >> this is a government for everybody, it's not for sale, that's what we believe in. [cheers and applause] >> and the former president says we are in a challenging moment where there are those who want to bring people together and those are people that want to divide, obama says people can get cynical during these times, they turn out to vote and absence is filled with special interest groups and lobbyists, the former president says the only way to reverse the cycle is for voters to take it upon themselves to commit to do something different and fight the things they believe in. and while he didn't mention president trump by name, obama
1:02 pm
did attack what he has often seen as the problem with the current state of politics. >> the biggest threat to our democracy i said yesterday is not -- [laughter] >> it's not one individual, it's not big super pac billionaires, it's us not doing what we were supposed to do. >> that was the closest that the president and the former president got to mention the current president. the current president said his words aren't just directed at democrats, he also called independents and also republicans who dent recognize or like what's going on in washington right now, eric. eric: jeff, thanks so much. tiffany joins us, cofounder and managing editor and cohost of the podcast and shawn noble, republican campaign consultant. tiffany, let me start with you, democrats need to flip 23 seats
1:03 pm
to change the house, will president obama help or hurt that? >> i think president obama will definitely help in that effort, i think what he said yesterday and what he echoed today is very true, he's not making this about one person but he's calling on reasonable thinking people to engage -- or exercise civic engagement which we haven't seen, what we are seeing on the right the rhetoric coming out of the white house has certainly energized people on the left and even people, even republicans as you see, there's discord within the republican party not just within congress but even discord with the administration and the trump white house, so i definitely think president obama's call for unity and not making this about one person but making about people engaging in their responsibility as american citizens to vote, i think that can only help the house. >> what do you think, the president could be a lighting rod for republicans and trump supporters? >> well, i think he could be a
1:04 pm
lighting rod. i think that the problem that president obama is going to have is he's going to talk about trying to be reasonable, we need to be serious and the hard left of the democrat party has gone off the rails. i mean, they are talking about impeachment, they are talking about -- you look at the kavanaugh hearings, the average american voter look at the democrats and say do we really want to give them power. i mean, that's going to be very motivational not only for republicans but for swing voters who are saying, do we really want to turn this over to democrats who are on this complete path of -- of, you know, left ward lurch or are we going to stick with the things that are working for us, tax cuts, the booming economy, job growth, i mean, those are the things that will play for republicans in november. eric: let's hear what former president obama said about the very thing. >> if we don't step up, things can't get worse. where there's a vacuum in our

democracy when we are not participating, we are not paying attention, we are not stepping up, other voices fill the void. but the good news is in two months we have a chance to restore some sanity in our politics. [cheers and applause] >> we have the chance to flip the house of representatives and make sure the real checks and balances of washington. eric: tiffany, he quotes, we have a chance to restore sanity in our politics. >> yeah, i think it's really challenging to have intelligent discussion with people that think that the current environment is sane, certainly there have been rollbacks and things that have happened in the obama administration that have impacted voters, there have been -- the tax cuts are a temporary relief to some people, however, the tax war -- the trade war that the president is starting is going to impact his base and when has his base been fired up,
1:06 pm
they are his stronghold but you do have the swing voters who have seen the effects and impacts to have presidency and the dangerous shadow cast across nation and across the globe and i do think thinking republicans will start to look at other options. i don't think that anybody who is saying this administration is functioning it's great and we will keep things status quo, i don't think that really amounts to an intelligent argument to make in this environment. weeric: the president didn't really praise nazis -- >> he called them good people. there's no room for confusion there. eric: what about tiffany said and in terms of insanity not just what democrats see as policies but the whole tone and tenure is coming out of the white house? >> what the american people see right now is the insanity of the left in interrupting -- eric: wait a minute, tiffany. >> this total convulsion that
1:07 pm
they've had over the kavanaugh hearing is people are looking at that saying, that's insanity, i mean, it's just a great -- gift that the president says we need to restore sanity while his wing of the party is acting like children. eric: and the democrats, though, sean, they call insanities some of the tweets and language and the tenure that's coming from the president himself. >> well, i mean, that is something that's baked into the cake, right, everybody knows what the president -- that the president is going to have tweets, that he speaks his mind and yet we have a booming economy, things are going well for the average american voter and when they look, do i want things to go the way they are going or do i want to try to turn it over to people that look like they are crazy when they are interrupting what's supposed to be the most deliverable body in the nation, in the senate, they -- eric: they would say they are being treated unfairly
1:08 pm
and the fix was in for kavanaugh. >> i don't know how being treated unfairly when you walk into a hearing wearing a t-shirt and start screaming at the top of the lungs. eric: go ahead. >> but what's the difference? so you have american citizens exercising their first amendment rights as free speech and then with the president of the united states who tweets out racist ridiculous things all of the time, democrats don't control the house, the senate, the courts the white house or anything and you are saying the american people are looking at the left that are derrainged one, that's snl, not a rationale argument to make. look at the twitter feed and remarks that he makes, this men called nazis called good people. his administration in discord, you have people inside the own white house saying, yeah, we don't really agree with this guy, this is on the hills of him saying he hires only the best people, we have the bob woodward that people cannot refute,

1:10 pm
president trump after a strong job's report, the president today focusing on the booming economy amid the steernlg identify the unnamed senior white house officials who wrote the explosive new york times op-ed lambasting the president. ellison barber live from the white house with more, how extensive is the search for the author of this op-ed? >> well, arthel, president trump told reporters on air force one that he was exploring legal actions against "the new york times" and he also said it's something his attorney general jeff sessions should investigate so he can try and figure out who actually did author this. >> i think it's national security, i would just say jeff should be investigating the author of that piece was because i really believe it's national security. >> action be taken against "the new york times"? >> we will see, i'm looking at that right now.
1:11 pm
>> "the new york times" says if the doj gets involved blatant abuse of government power, white house official told the associated press the president was expressing his frustration with the op-ed not ordering federal prosecutors to take action, more than 30 cabinet and cabinet-level administration officials have denied writing this op-ed, the president told a reporter in north dakota he could think of 4 or 5 potential authors, he did not name any of them but does mot believe it was a high-level official. this op-ed search for the author is overshadowing friday's job report, the special counsel investigation and the russia probe, because just the other day a federal judge sentenced george papadopoulos you -- 14 ds to lying to the fbi, first campaign aide to be sentenced,
1:12 pm
he helped initiate the russia probe according to reports after night of drinking in may of 2016, papadopoulos told australian diplomat that russia had political dirt on hillary clinton. >> did you tell anyone on the campaign? >> as far as i remember i absolutely did not. >> you didn't tell corey lewendowsky. >> anyone. >> walid phares? >> anyone. >> the president has, of course, repeatedly denied collusion with russia. he told reporters on air force one the other day that he didn't really know papadopoulos. arthel. arthel: ellison, let's get back to the new job's report, this is something the president can celebrate about. >> and he is, this is a good thing for the administration, unemployment is at 18-year low
1:13 pm
and president trump certainly wants to talk about it. this is the 95th month of job growth, the unemployment rate is under 4% on average hourly earnings increase by about 10 cents, former barack obama is saying that president trump is taking credit that really began during his administration, president trump, of course, disagrees, he says an he said that repeatedly that he thinks the economy is so good that's something that will lead republicans across the board to victory come november. arthel. arthel: ellison, barber, thank you very much. for more on this, let's bring in caitlin owen, let's start where ellison just left off with president obama officially back on the campaign trail reminding everyone that he handed off a good economy. the unemployment rate, take a look at, this unemployment rate in november 2016 was 4.6%, in december of 2016 it was 4.7%. in january of 2017 it was 4.8%,
1:14 pm
then taking a look at job growth during that period, 172,000 jobs added in november of 2016. 180,000 jobs added in december of 2016 and at the start of new year and the new presidency 259,000 jobs added in january 2017, reminding everybody what ellison just reported, current unemployment rate 3.9% and in 2001, 1,201,000 jobs added in august, so the question is, how does president trump stay focused in adder articulate his contributions to the continued success of the american economy? >> i think that's a great question, republicans, congressional republicans especially have been trying to get president trump to stay on message for months now, ever since they've passed tax reform bill lowering the tax rate, they've been, you know, it's been this constant effort to try to get trump to focused on the
1:15 pm
positive, stop getting pulled to drama, petty disagreements with people he doesn't like but just just talking about the economy, he does do it, it's not it's totally forgotten about it but it's very difficult to get him to stay on message. arthel: do you think enough working-class americans have seen enough benefits from the corporate tax rate decreases and adjustments and to be enthusiastic enough to continue voting for president trump's republican candidate? >> i don't think that the tax cut itself is going to be what they vote on. it's just not registering the same way republicans had hoped. now, that's not to say the view of the economy is very good right now and that does historically have translated with the party in power doing well but the thing that we've discovered at axios and looking at trends, this time is unique in that usually the positive
1:16 pm
view of the economy correlates with positive view of the president and president trump's approval ratings are still under water, they always have been. it's funny, the two haven't changed and i don't think they will before november, the view of the economy is very positive right now and the view of the president and party is negative and so what happens when those two trends collide, it's hard to say, it looks like democrats are poised to do well in november. arthel: meanwhile i want to go back to what you were saying and some of the other leaders in the republican party concerned that president trump can't stay on message in terms of what he has done very well for the economy, how much, though, is really riding on what president trump tells his fans and supporters at the campaign rallies? i mean, aren't they on board no matter what? >> right, you know, the economy has been doing well. we are on a steady increase in the number of jobs added in these are trends that started before trump and continued under trump.
1:17 pm
that doesn't mean that voters aren't feeling their effects, you know, i think that sometimes partisanship plays a role on this, the trump supporters argue that it's trump making lives better as democrats say no, this is already happening under obama, so it's not that either man is wrong, it's just that the trend, they are both enjoy -- they both enjoy strengthening economy under their own presidencies. arthel: good economy is good for all of us. >> that is true. arthel: thank you, good to see you. >> you too, thank you. arthel: be sure -- thank you, to tune in to fox news sunday tomorrow chris wallace interviews vice president mike pence on the economy, immigration and much more, it airs at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. eastern right here on the fox news channel. eric. eric: arthel, while you were out west reporting from los angeles this afternoon, they're been hit by all the wild fires, here on the east coast millions are bracing for severe weather as

1:35 pm
strong and where the judge could have been stronger? >> well, look, on substance it was a masterful performance from beginning to end, judge kavanaugh showed his outstanding legal mind, his incredible temperament and you can see from watching the hearing how it is that he earned the left-leaning bar association highest anonymous well-qualified rating and why he has earned such a claim from so many people across the ideological spectrum. so i think he did great and i think he gave republicans ample reasons to support him. there's lots of stunts and antics and senator harris of california played demagogue and judge kavanaugh treated her in good faith in a way that, i think, he perhaps shouldn't have, in the end, overall he had
1:36 pm
an outstanding performance and, again, i think the white house and the judge kavanaugh had ample reason to feel good with it. arthel: i need to move forward and as you know the democratic senators called on john dean, former nixon white house counsel who went against his administration during watergate known as trump critic, dean predicted that with kavanaugh on the high court it would become, quote, weak check at best on presidential power calling the scenario, quote, deeply troubling and adding that there is much to fear from an unchecked president who is inclined to abuse his powers, do you agree with dean's assessment? >> no, that was empty rhetoric, judge kavanaugh's views on executive power are very conventional and no one has pointed anything that would be at all alarming, look, there are
1:37 pm
liberal scholars who have said that most -- that most liberal scholars hold the view, for example, that presidents should not be -- may not be indicted while they are sitting, judge kavanaugh doesn't necessarily hold the view but it's odd that democrats are criticizing him for supposed view that's entirely mainstream. arthel: he did -- i don't want to stick on this, but judge kavanaugh did write in his -- in the minnesota law review that a sitting president should not be subjected to any sort of trial or subpoena -- >> as part of a policy -- as part of policy proposal for congress to adopt. obviously the very fact that he was offering that as a policy proposal which seems to suggest that he doesn't think the constitution requires it. arthel: okay, understood, we will move on because i want to talk about your former boss and as you all know the senate confirmed justice antonin scalia

senator grassley's continuing to just strike the gavel at the opening of the hearings when the other senators as you already mentioned were trying to jump in, not just the two other democratic senators as well, jumping in to say, wait, a minute we demand to see the documents, first of all, we need more time, we have 42,000 pages that were dumped on us last night and we want to see other documents revealed to the public, while that was happening senator grassley kept going with the gavel, do you think that senator grassley says why did you wait for this moment to do this, have you not have told me 30 minutes ago, i don't know, what do you make of that situation? >> well, actually i thought he was remarkably patient letting the first hour or hour and a half of the hearing be filled by senate democrats antics, i'm sure he would have wished that they had informed him that they would be doing that sort of tag-team clown show at the beginning but i think he was very patient and, look, when you
1:40 pm
see throughout the hearing is that democrats couldn't score any points at all on judge kavanaugh and record and instead tried to distort things in his record and he answered them time after time, so, you know, they could have all the records in the world and nothing would change. arthel: back to decorum, senators booker and harris are not here to defend themselves but they would beg to differ that their process that they chose is not a clown show, but given the, you know, the political in the senate, do you think and to your point that maybe senator grassley says, hey, guys, you should have 30 minutes ago, an hour ago, do you think they would have gotten somewhere and the hearing would have been postponed or delayed? >> i'm not suggesting that. i think it was an effort of the entire democratic caucus on the
