florence had for the east coast. it is expected to cause extensive damage when it makes landfall later this week. jillian: donald trump approved a state of emergency north carolina. i'm sure people are boarding up already. >> reporter: exactly right. both of you have covered hurricanes as recently as last year. one thing that is good so far, you don't see attentive people in wilmington. that could be the fact that it is 5 am or the people are heeding the orders of evacuation. take a look at this. you see boards up already, we are 72 hours away from this thing and sandbags, boards up. you have to believe people over the last couple years are starting to heed warnings for these hurricanes. there has artie been a little bit of flooding on the outer banks ahead of florence. the focus yesterday and the next few days is preparation from filling sandbags to boarding up windows.

people throughout virginia and the carolinas getting their homes ready for a direct impact from florence but it is also a time to protect and prepare not just your property but your self. some folks encountering empty shells as they stock up on supplies and gas lines starting to get long as people fill up not knowing how long they will be in their cars trying to evacuate. even the navy making sure it's fleet is in, waters is florence approaches. all this information is vital says officials like the governor in north carolina. >> one of the things that will be potentially different and more impactful are the high winds and storm surge. we encourage people to abide by evacuation orders issued by local counties. do not try to ride out these storms.

hopeful we don't give back a haven but don't have to spend $1 trillion investing in a nation far far away. jillian: a lot of people went to fight the battle and never came home. you are one of many who did come home and you're here to tell stories about it. what is this like for you? how do you feel every 9/11? >> reporter: it changed all of us, changed the trajectory of my life, multiple wars. no one affected as much of those who lost loved ones and family members. it woke us up to the reality of radical islamic terrorism, jihadists who seek our destruction and can't forget they are still there. al qaeda's number 2 who fought the soviets in afghanistan, phot us in the us, he is still around, they are grooming usama bin laden's son to be the future leader of al qaeda. a few months ago, america is the

first enemy of the muslims. al qaeda still seeking to come back, has a foothold in certain places. we think of isis because of a rack and syria, hoping for a come back in the grd community. it is all about vigilance and remembering what they want to do to us and america stands of work that and if we don't stand strong the world is a dangerous place. rob: how far is it to keep up with our members and the country engaged in a war that has taken this long? it has to be tremendously disappointing to think we are still there. >> reporter: it is an import question. the military does their job on rotation to find a new way to tackle the problem we haven't solved in the central government, coble to afghan national security forces infiltrated by the taliban and. it can get frustrating. rotation after rotation you see reflected in the american people. polls show 21% of americans

too much winning. rob: will it last is the big question. here with expert analysis, senior fellow for the national taxpayers union, mattie doctor. thanks for coming on. these are great numbers that should help republicans in the midterms, sounds like they need some help. what do you make of what we see? >> reporter: last week we saw a lot of good news for the economy building on months of good news for the economy. you signed earlier the expansion of blue collar worker jobs is the last data point we know the economy is not only working for employers but for workers as well. the left has been trying to cast the text form plan and trump's the regulatory agenda as something that only help the opera salons of society and we know that is not true. workers are feeling the effects, we saw data last week that said wages are rising. we know jobs are becoming more

available in sectors that have remained sticky in the last couple years, mining, construction, manufacturing, a lot of enthusiasm from employers on manufacturing and workers feeling the bump as well. jillian: a lot of people say things look great right now but what happened 6 months from now, year from now, how long can we sustain this? >> what we have seen over the last year and a half with donald trump is a fundamental rewriting of the way our laws are aligned to induce business investment in the united states so if things continue we could see impact for years. the yesterday the house ways and means committee announced it will be doing tax reform 2.0, making permanent a lot of tax cuts. with that change in the law having permanent changes to some of the onerous parts of our tax code means the economy could be churning for years to come. what we need is certainty for

businesses and workers moving forward, businesses able to invest for the long term and that will spur growth for the economy at home. rob: so much information on the economy, so much data that comes in. for most people hard to determine and in this case president obama has been capable of convincing the left he is responsible for the uptick and donald trump is capable of convincing the right it is his economy. how do you determine that? >> how you determine that is your circumstances. i always say people don't vote with their checkbooks but how they feel about their checkbooks. with this good economic data, put green i shades on and see a lot of numbers in front of you but americans feel more confident in their own economic

circumstances. not only do they have a job but if they don't like their job they know they can leave and find another one because there are more jobs available now. their own wages are rising, they see not only tax cuts show up in their paycheck but their paychecks get bigger as a result of wages increasing and employer's are investing in their workers, becoming more productive. all the metrics in the economy are showing an uptick. how people feel, their circumstances changing. when you see president obama trying to take credit for this economy it is almost laughable because for years he tried to tell americans they were better off but people didn't feel that way. trump hasn't removed the barriers in the economy, they get to be better off in their own circumstances. shannon: thank you. jillian: see what is coming up for "fox and friends". >> 17 years ago today we were here on the air when the whole world changed. in washington dc and shanksville, pennsylvania.
