"fox and friends first" continues right now. good morning, you are watching "fox and friends first" on thursday morning. jillian: let's get to our top story on what some are calling the storm of a lifetime. the storm downgraded to a category 2 overnight, 110 mile an hour winds and waves reaching 83 feet, experts can't stress enough the storm could be deadly. rob: we got you covered on every angle, todd pyro, jonathan siri, griff jenkins monitoring conditions on the ground. jillian: we start with janice dean. downgraded to a category 2 but still very strong storm.

>> i worry that because of a category 2 people will let their guard down but the national hurricane center is saying don't, we still have a very dangerous storm surge and epic flooding on the way is the storm is expected to stall. folks across the northeast, hurricane sandy, that was a category one when it made landfall and did destructive damage, part of the reason was because of its size and the storm surge and the rainfall. just because it is a category 2 it is 1 mile shy of a major hurricane. the 5 am advisory just out, we are seeing the radar here, the outer bands of rain moving close to the outer banks, we could see a tornado watch in the next couple hours because of these landfalling storms. we have a threat for severe weather including tornadoes. future radar, this model makes landfall friday.

we don't quite know the point of landfall. will it hug the coast or make several and falls, this shows landfall friday and lingering in north carolina and parts of south carolina and that could be the legacy of this storm, the epic amount of rain. the latest track moving inland using close on friday perhaps making landfall, the chance of it stalling offshore. south carolina needs to pay attention to this and the appalachians, high mountainous terrain, the flooding will be incredible. we will set records with this system anywhere from 20 to 40 inches of rain along the coast of north carolina and that is going to be the danger. more people die in the flooding and storm surge than the wind so keep that in mind. there is the storm surge, 9 to 13 feet is not changed from yesterday even though they

the cusp, life-threatening storm surge and flooding expected to devastate the coast despite the downgrade. jillian: they are expecting 110 mile an hour winds, nothing to mess around with. >> reporter: it is not. the coast guard said conditions, no ships in or out. expectation of gale force winds, 35 miles an hour or more but janice can be more right on when she talks about not underestimating the danger. for little context hurricane matthew two years ago hit north carolina and caused 28 deaths and catastrophic flooding as a category one. this area, many areas haven't recovered, going to be subjected to 9 to 13 feet of storm surge. this could be completely underwater by tomorrow in

down, when it slows down it actually provides the opportunity to produce a tremendous amount of rainfall. when everyone is focused on the intensity of the storm the two things we are seeing is wind field is much bigger geographically so it will produce a very large area of storm surge and a tremendous amount of rain because when it slows down to make that turn it provides an opportunity for the storm to continue to reign in certain areas so you will see tremendous inland flooding and damage. rob: as the wind dies down the story is water with this storm. tell us how these storms work. we always talk about that will defined i wall. this storm had a beautiful lie, beautiful storm a day ago. do you see it being that defines or is it starting to fall apart a little bit?

>> the i wall is starting to degrade a little bit. if you can envision an ice skater when they put their arms in a spin faster and when they extend their arms they spin slower, sometimes when you see the eye grow in size physically the magnitude of the wind will decrease. rob: interesting. jillian: some tips for people, when you see storms like this what do you want people to know? >> first thing is to follow the orders of the state and local emergency managers. secondly, have a plan and be prepared. rob: do you anticipate the storm to we can further as it approaches the coast or will it strengthen again? >> reporter: most of the forecast guidance is suggesting it will stay on its intensity

rob: we are back with a fox news alert, several nuclear power plants in the path of hurricane florence, experts warn the buildings may not be prepared for this monster storm. jillian: the plants brace for impact. is there a plan at this point? >> reporter: the national weather service says this could be the storm of a lifetime. in the projected path of hurricane florence are six nuclear power plants. florence is expected to pass of the plants in brunswick, the brunswick plant's reactors are the same design as those in fukushima, japan which exploded in 2011 after an earthquake into nami. federal regulators required all

us plants to upgrade their facilities to better handle national disasters. the storm will bring in 20 to 30 inches of rain to north carolina, even up to 40 inches in isolated areas. that could bring catastrophic flooding. the office of response and recovery said they were tracking conditions and were not concerned about the plants yet. they may have point generators and duke energy said they were sitting down two of the plants before the storm right later today and it may take days or even weeks to bring power back to their customers depending on how bad the storm damage is. the commission of nuclear energy said they are sending additional inspectors to check out the plants and they have a response center in atlanta which will be monitoring the storm and any storm damage. rob: the brunswick plant got the bill i on it for the line of this storm.
