north carolina. steve, what do you see? >> laura, outside of the camera lights and police lights, much of this coast of the north carolina is in the dark. more than 500,000 north koreans without electric power, many in homes that have been damaged by the winds. damaged by flooding. that means they have no airconditioning, no tv, no cell phone service. and some of them are in life-threatening conditions. now, the rescues have begun already. people coming from arranged the country. swift boat rescue teams from at least 19 states here. that's one of the remarkable things about these storms it brings out the volunteers from all over. the police chief said they are going to set out at first light to see some areas they have not yet seen. we have gotten a break after 30 hours from pounding rain and wind. strong enough to dage damage along the coast. part of hoofs, balconies, things like that.
