thing but not so right now. people worried about how high is high. tough to get a home loan, tougher to get a mortgage, tougher to get any sort of loan. we will see tonight with futures and foreign trading. >> it's 5:00 in new york and this is "the five" coming up in a few minutes. first, a crucial update on hurricane michael which came ashore as the strongest storm to hit the gulf coast of the united states since hurricane camille in 1969. 155-mile-an-hour maximum sustained winds upon landfall. it's moving inland and headed for georgia. the national hurricane center with a live update. >> welcome back to the national hurricane center. looking at the official clock here at the hurricane center, it's 5:00 eastern. latest information on hurricane michael. you can see well inland, the

center is approaching close to the georgia border. with time coming or going to start seeing heavier rain and some wind in georgia as well. you can still see the eye of the storm. just because you are not on the coast doesn't mean you couldn't get some of this wind damage. we expect further movement of the eye. you could see trees down and power outages into georgia. looking at the forecast, the brand-new one, you can still see some of the tropical storm force winds extending from the center. that becomes a problem. the design to get to central georgia eventually becoming a tropical storm but in the meantime, still some pretty hefty winds. could be some issues with fallen trees and power outages. notice with time, still a tropical storm moving back into the atlantic.

we have a tropical storm warning for portions of georgia, south carolina into north carolina. this keeps on going with time. let's look at the impact associated. one of them, you're looking at the storm surge. let's make this a little bit bigger so everyone can see it. the storm surge is still going to be there. you have the rain. both combining makes for some dangerous -- with the water. still looking at the rainfall that could occur. luckily were moving pretty quickly here with the movement and as a result more not going to have a lingering system that can produce some of this flooding rain but at the same time, some rain bands could produce four to 6 inches. let's look at the storm surge. this is the latest one we have. the numbers are down. the reason is because some of that water is going to try to drain. let's look at that closer. the wind was powerful. we had a powerful storm event and that forces the water inland and once you start putting it in

these inland areas, rivers and tributaries, its forest in and it takes gravity and time. to flow out. it's going to be slow movement out. the other factor is you still have winds rotating around michael. you could see some onshore flow continuing with time and as a result, it takes time to really drain some places. we need to be careful. there is debris on the ground. you have power lines down, a lot of damage out there. plus he still have some places with a lot of water. that is something we need to continue to watch with time. as we go into the future, we start looking at the forecast. we really need to start keeping an eye on some of the damage down here, keep off the roadways, especially at night time. it becomes an issue. when we start going into the future, you could see, you could see areas that with the rotation around even the storm, some of those tides could be elevated even on the east coast and the atlantic. that's the update on hurricane michael right here from the

national hurricane center. >> shepard: ken graham, thank you. the storm came ashore, as you can see. directly over the air force base east of panam city, florida, in the florida panhandle. we have no reports yet but it took a direct hit. mexico beach, look at this vide video. there is widespread damage. the center of the storm did not hit it but you can see there is debris, roofs off houses, the kind of damage you would expect to the east of a major hurricane like this. the meteorologists got it exactly right. it was projected to hit somewhere between pensacola and apalachicola, and it did. there were late fears it would go directly over panama city beach. would've been catastrophic and could have leveled thousands and thousands of buildings with

forward speed of 14 to 16 miles an hour and 155-mile-an-hour winds. this hit one of the least populated areas in all of florida. the next video came from springfield, right outside panama city. a local guy went out to assess the damage. >> they lost the whole roof. they are going to come over here and stay with us. they will at least stay dry. half the roof is gone. thank god from what i can see so far. >> shepard: survived in part. that sort of the situation. panama city is a city unto itself across the bridge is a beach. panama city on the east side, that's where the western edge of

the eye wall hit. we have few reports from there but are expecting more. to the west along panama city beach, that's where we find the fox business network jeff flock. how does it work? >> fortunately not catastrophic damage. but as you can see it's characteristic of what is happened. windows blown out. i don't know if you can see. a water line broke and water is pouring out. this is the kind of damage here, not catastrophic damage, largely because the building boom here come up buildings like this one back there, huge steel, concrete, hurricane proof allegedly. based on the category 1 or maybe category 2 conditions that we had here. if it had been a cat 4 our cat 5, we don't know. >> shepard: we don't.

jeff flock live on panama city beach. east of there is where the hurricane hit. east of the hurricane, the west side, the oyster town of apalachicola. if you eat an oyster in the state of florida, largely it came from they are. at least until today. phil keating is on scene. how does that look? >> things are looking flooded. thankfully the rain has finally stopped. we are still getting some decent bursts of wind. certainly not tropical storm strength by any means. much less hurricane strength. multiple hours throughout today was absently ferocious. all of this flooding came from storm surge from the apalachicola river which you can see if they're on your left. that spilled into the streets, as well as gulf of mexico water that was being shoved upstream, pushing the river further north of apalachicola which could reveal in the next day, maybe tonight or the day after, a lot

of flooding. all of that water has to go somewhere, and it couldn't for hours escape to the gulf of mexico but the water here is finally receding. this is water stream below us. asphalt, drivable street. it's very appropriately named. power outages throughout the panhandle and big bend. 200,000 households have no electricity. the first search and rescue teams in panama city have been deployed. we can presume that franklin county where we are is already doing that are about to do that themselves. none of the rain has stopped, that's what really the sheriff's department, police department, as well as the state emergency operations center, all of the deployed teens really needed. go out, damage and hopefully find minimal fatalities if they find any. with a storm like this, it certainly seems likely. >> shepard: phil keating on

scene for us. as the storm went inland and crossed interstate 10, just west of their our teams from our station fox 10 in pensacola. let's listen live. >> not as much as we were seeing one over and pensacola. >> talk to us about the intensity of the wind and rain. >> the rain, it is hard to see more than 100, 150 feet in front of us at this point because of where we are because we don't have trees protecting us. the wind definitely picking up. we can feel it hitting the car and it's definitely knocking us around a little bit. nothing to the point that we feel uncomfortable but there is -- there's been a decent amount of rain building up in the median. you can see some water pooling. at this point, nothing is blocking i10.

no water is blocking i10 but there are some trees that are fallen down and obviously the public works departments for these cities that we are passing will obviously, once the storm does pass, will then begin to clean the road here. a truck driver emergency fuel company driving out on the roads as well. obviously they have their flashers going so i guess people can see where they are going. here in florida, that's actually against the law to be doing something like that. if you are out for a drive, you are not supposed to have your flashers on. with how little the visibility is. >> shepard: the reason that is breaking up, this vehicle was eastbound on interstate 10 about 25 miles away now from the spot where the hurricane passed over interstate 10 right about marianna florida. it is headed into georgia now. if you are in tallahassee, there is rain. if you are up toward atlanta,

>> jesse: fox news alert. hurricane michael still beating down on the florida panhandle. the latest from our live team fox coverage. correspondent phil keating on the ground in florida and chief meteorologist rick reichmuth from the weather center. let's go to phil keating in apalachicola florida. >> hey, jesse. apalachicola was just east of where the hurricane, cat 4,

155-mile-an-hour wind. we were on the dirtier side of the storm. moreover rain, more wind, more storm surge. good news is the rain has stopped, the winds have significantly died down and the water is receding. however, most of this town all on low-lying areas, most of the county, franklin county, low-lying. everyone was ordered to evacuate mandatorily. not everybody did. that's always the case but the water is finally receding here. everybody remains under a stay in shelter order meaning if you didn't evacuate any state in your house, don't leave your house until we tell you you can. sunrise to sunset. that's a curfew that remains in effect, absolutely mandatory. that will trigger in a couple hours. that's the apalachicola river to

your left. it flows from screen left to screen right all the way towards that bridge. beyond the bridge is the gulf of mexico and that's the natural outflow of the river. all morning and afternoon long, the river was being blown and pushed back upstream because of this super high hurricane winds. last recorded-mile-per-hour i saw from apalachicola was 87 miles an hour. stronger gusts were stronger than that. it was pushing all that water upstream beyond apalachicola so in the next hours, days, we will have seen and it will reveal how much flooding all of that created here and not only here but far east of us and beyond. the storm surge here was of supposed to be 9 to 13 feet. it was 9 feet officially as the highest rating that we got for apalachicola.

east of here, definitely other parts of the coastline which fortunately is very sparsely populated. fewer people impacted. there is a lot of forest land, state and national. a lot of the storm surge. search and rescue teams have been deployed by helicopter and boat, by the bay county sheriff's office, that's panama city which took a heavy hint as well. we are expecting franklin county where we are to also deploy search teams now that the weather is decent enough. get your high-profile vehicles. we don't know if there are any fatalities but with a storm and hurricane of this magnitude, it would most likely be a sure thing at this point. a lot of work to be done to see what the damages over the next day or two. >> jesse: thank you for the report. now to fox news chief meteorologist rick reichmuth in

the weather center. >> really interesting, one thing that phil said and that's when the water goes, it will reveal what happened. we have been getting incredible images and video out of so many places showing the damage. it often takes into the water is gone until you can get all the locations and get a good sense of the damage. it will certainly be extreme because of the storm, one of the strongest we've ever had, coming on shore. moving quickly, that's the good news. 155 miles an hour. it takes a long time for that energy to go away. it's crossing toward southwestern georgia. right there is the center of the storm right now. came on at 155. we still have officially from the national hurricane center 125-mile-an-hour storm all the way towards georgia. here's how it plays out historically. strongest by wind, the fourth strongest we've ever seen. as far as pressure, the central pressure of the storm, it's the
