son is inside a turkish courtroom, he could walk free today some say after being held captive for more than two years. ainsley: while we wait on a decision there. turkish officials making a bombshell claim in another major case saying there is audio and video proof that that missing "the washington post" journalist was murdered. steve: what's the latest? doug mckelway joins us from washington with diplomat standoff. >> questions about the face of two individuals both of which could have big impacts on u.s. relations abroad. the first has to do with pastor andrew brunson who is in the midst of a court hearing right now we think. he was taken just before dawn to a courtroom. he has been facing charges for a while now of both espionage and terror related charges. charges that he denies he could in theory face up to 35 years in prison though. the trump administration has been pushing hard for his release. there have been some sanctions levied on turkey

and they may be ramped up if in fact brunson is not released. the other issue halls to do with the disappear and of of a saudi critic last seen entering the saudi con slot in istanbul. saudi arabia's crown prince ordered an operation to detain him. as you just mentioned turkey claims to have some actual evidence about his disappearance. so this could be pretty explorvel. there is a lot of bipartisan sentiments here on capitol hill to get to the bottom of this. and this may really draw into question the relations between the united states and saudi arabia. we are watching both of these cases very, very closely this morning. brian: thanks, doug. bipartisan support for harsh sanctions. that begin skimaginethey believw he was murdered. choptiond up the body and took it out in different bags. ainsley: they don't want to release that video and don't

people in restaurants. we need a return to civility. ainsley: it was really shocking to see the former head of the justice department to tell the folks in the crowd to kick them. he responded to that because the media was pretty outraged about it. especially republicans. i know you were one of them saying that he shouldn't come out with that rhetoric. it's inciting violence some of the defended himself. he says okay, stop the fake outrage. i'm obviously not advocating violence. in fact, when i was the a.g. violent crime in the u.s. was historically low. i'm saying republican us are undermining our democracy and democrats need to be tough, proud, and stawp up for the values we believe in. the end. so he didn't apologize but says he wasn't advocating violence. what is your response? >> as a top law enforcement officer of the country. former top law enforcement officer he should know words matter. it just takes one person to misconstrue what he said. when he said when they go low we kick them. one person to take that too

extreme tactics. americans are not going to vote for the party whose message is impeachment and investigate. investigate, investigate kavanaugh and impeach the president or impeach kavanaugh, too. americans are going to run from that and break maybe with tradition and not rebuke the party in power. right? >> well, i read in the '98 messaging and in '98 because the republicans went too far, we gained seats. i have think here the democrats coming out of kavanaugh have energized conservative base what people want to see now is a more co conciliatory unity oriented politics. that's the way to get back into office. i think what holder said was way out of line for a former attorney general to say that. let's get back to policy, to rationality, to convincing the american public what the right direction of the country should be. >> mark, the number one issue for democrats and republicans is not the

sexiest issue but most practical, it's healthcare. it's not political, either. it's everyone's kitchen table. how come no one realizes that? >> yes. the number one issue in the polls for a long time is that healthcare sun resolved. democrats have had an edge on healthcare. and i think they got wrapped um in fomenting more support from the base and not understanding that it's swing voters in suburban areas and working class districts that will really decide this upcoming election. they, oddly enough, have shown that they care about the issues. not about just fighting out resistance and pounding on the supreme court doors. brian: george stephanopoulos said we thought it would be a good idea to go out there campaigner. hurting his cause in his first term. how come trump seems to be helping his cause? >> look, i think trump is in a situation in which the

republican leader of the house quit and so there was nobody out there to create a republican message. so i think he probably helped more than hurt. but i think actually it's the democrats here who so far we have shot ourselves in the foot here going overboard that actually provided republicans and your show with more talking points than you can imagine for the next three weeks. brian: we thank you for that lastly bernie sanders does an op-ed and he talks about single payer healthcare and how that's the future. it was answered by president trump and saying it's going to cost $33 billion over the next 10 years and it's not sustainable nor will it give quality. isn't that the wrong message to the right issue? well, first at least it's a debate about issues where i would like things to be. i think single pair or medicare for all. i think that people don't understand the incredible cost there. brian: gotcha. >> americans are looking for a compromise on healthcare and they do want to see progress made, but they don't want single payer yet.

measures were registered to vote or national voter registration day. steve: can republicans use the expected high voter turnout to their advantage. here to weigh in is fox news contributor ari fleischer. what do you make of this? >> well, a couple things. number one, the dropoff from presidential year to midterm year is massive. 45 million americans sit at home, don't vote. steve: why? >> million years get everybody out. midterms only get out the base and people excited. give you three numbers to put up november election. 32, 42, 37. and in 2006, when republicans got their clock cleaned and lost the house and the senate in bush's second midterm. only 32% of the electorate said they were conservative. four years later, obama's first term, republicans took the house, biggest election win in 70 years. 42% of the electorate said they were conservative. four years later. republicans took the senate. 37 percent said they were conservative. if conservatives sit at home, republicans are dead

low income and middle income peoplement and changing the roles of the two parties. she was in trouble before that i suspect that she is not going to win race in arizona. this is going to compounds her problem. steve: sounds like the senate could pick up some for the republicans. what about the house? your prediction? >> i have always said republicans net 2 in the senate, could be 3. could be 4. the house, i think the democrats gain is between 20 and 30. which means either republicans control it by five or democrats control it by about five. it is going to be real, real close in the house. steve: polarization? >> polarization is a modern fact of life. and this is where it's fascinating because the question to me is can donald trump somehow rise above. can he be the same guy at the rallies who riles up the base and people say he is so authentic but also find some way to unify. find some way to do both. to expand his broad width and elevate so people say, you know what? he actually does care and he is doing a lot of good.

not in america. ainsley: congressman, why did you decide to write the op-ed? >> well, i'm concerned that you are seeing an increase of this. you know, look, i would like to see leaders on both sides calling it out. you are seeing leaders on the right calling it out. you are not seeing any leaders on the left calling it out. in fact, you are seeing some of the leaders on the left inciting more violence. calling on more violence instead of saying there is no place for it. i would like to see the mainstream media asking both republican and democrat leaders to stand up against this kind of rhetoric. this kind of violence. steve: congressman scalise, maxine waters just works across the hall from you in a figure of speech. you are working in the same building. have you thought about going over to her office and saying what are you talking about? what are you doing? >> >> you know, i have talked to some democrats about this, and there are a lot of democrats that are concerned about it. i would like to hear some of them speaking out publicly because i think that's what it is going to take. steve: why don't you speak

to her directly, sir? >> well, i have spoken to a number of them directly. and i think the ones i have spoken to, you know, some of them get it some of them don't. but ultimately we have got to keep shining a light on this to make it clear that this isn't what politics is about in america. it's not what the founding of our country was about. it was about free speech, freedom of expression. not violence against anybody. and, you know, margaret thatcher used to say first you win the argument. then you win the vote. they are not winning the argument if they are resorting to violence. ultimately they will lose the vote if they continue to call on violence. look, president trump has worked really hard to get this economy back on track. people like the direction of the country. they don't like the direction that we are headed. they go out and try to lay out a better course and better agenda. that's not what they are trying to do on the left. they are trying to threaten and intimidate people. that's not what america is about. >> congressman, i get the sense when i watch noption that she feels like she is speaker already. do you feel like it's done that you should get minority

brian: stock market has rattled us once again hitting worst two day stretch in 8 months. the. steve: the dow jones industrial average dropping 545 points on the heels of a more than 800 point drop the day before. ainsley: experts blame the drop on rising interest rates. what does this mean in the context of today's economy? here to weigh in on this is trish regan the host of trish regan prime time. congratulations. >> starts monday at 8:00 p.m. on fox business. got that one out of the way. steve: what's going on? >> it's natural. the market is at all time

high and been doing incredibly well. people are saying okay, well, at some point, this economy is going to be doing so welled that fed is going to have to, imagine this, raise interest rates. i mean, they spent the last near decade not raising interest rates. and just having effectively liquidity spigot open. they have to raise rates and consequently people said maybe i don't need to be invested in the stock market. maybe i can have a safer debt fixed income instrument which is a treasury bond or some kind of debts instrument. so this rotation of money is what's going on. brian: i know there is multiple factions. you can't oversimplify. what factor do you believe, trish regan, this whole china, america trade war we're in. >> i don't think it has anything to do with it honestly. look, we are china's biggest customer. and do you really want to alienated your biggest ghure? no.

eventually they have to come to the table and engage in these negotiations. i don't think it's actually china. i think the economy is doing great. brian. you just look at all the numbers. i'm somebody who gets nervous. the market is looking 6 to 9 months out. if i see a big sell off in the market i say what does that mean for our economy? our economy is doing so well right now, 4.2% growth. ainsley: unemployment -- >> yes. lowest since 196. nothing on the economic horizon that would say fundamentally things are not in a good spot. steve: right. but the president, you know, over the last couple of days, he has been brushing back out feds calling them loco. essentially saying okay, you've jacked up rates enough. >> yeah. steve: stop it. >> no president actually wants the fed to raise rates, right? because as soon as you start raising rates effectively costing more to borrow money. steve: sure. >> less likely to borrow money. less likely to put money to work. i get where he is coming

among people of color. look at these men. you have kanye west, tiger woods, the golf champion and you have football great jim brown, who was sitting alongside kanye, didn't get much play because of kanye's program buoyant performance. there the fact of the matter the rising economic tide that has lifted all boats and has reduced unemployment in the african-american community to historic lows is the best social program there is. maybe kanye did a very, you know, kind of a flamboyant, extraordinary performance but core message was, that this is the way to improve the plight of the urban poor. i thought that he was, he was terrific. i would have preferred maybe happened on a day that we weren't talking about, you know, saudi journalists getting carved up by their government or hurricane michael ravaging the gulf coast or stock market

plunging but when is a good day? this is the political season. they had i had scheduled. made the point t was very entertaining. >> you mentioned political season. we're only a few weeks away from the midterm. what do you think about the idea that the blue wave is drying up like some are saying? >> ainsley i'm not an expert at that. my sense is that immediately following the brett kavanaugh debacle they ruined that man's reputation and hurt his family grievously, at same time they were confronting people like ted cruz in restaurants and chasing mitch mcconnell through reagan national airport, there was a real backlash against the left, against the blue wave so to speak and that the republicans were ascending. maybe that cooled off a little bit the last couple days, but if the election was last week i was sure the president's party would carry the day. we'll see what happens in the next couple weeks. how i think he responds to

hurricane michael is important. how he deals with the saudi journalist getting carved up in istanbul and stock market has to stablize. brian: important for the governor's race in florida, important for the senate's race in florida. i know you like when two sides come together. there might be something there with criminal justice reform, jared kushner, getting a credit for it. just like a few other major issues. when van jones praising jared kushner there might be an actual breakthrough? >> i like what van jones is saying. he seems to me to be a results-oriented person. i think he is very eloquent, smart guy. i think everyone, when kim kardashian, kanye's wife was in the oval office and she successfully got parole, a presidential pardon, rather, for someone who is jail for awfully long time a black woman for non-violent drug offense, i think that might have been the exemplar. we have to move toward criminal justice reform where we don't

automatically stuff people in, kanye mentioned the 13th amendment, involuntary servitude, in prison, awful, awful fate that doesn't help anybody, costs a ton of money. i think with this kind of emerging coalition between the president of the united states and urban oriented people who know the score, there could be a reform that broadens the base of the republican party. it is necessarily doing that. the democrats have for too long as kanye mentioned had a monopoly on municipal government. they have been arrogant and neglectful and i think the, you know, it is all come home to roost. the chickens came home to roost. let them work for a pragmatic solution to a dreadful problem. i think the president in doing so will broaden his support and blunt any chance of a blue wave. steve: jim jordan, mark meadows from the congress have written an op-ed in foxnews.com, they

last few minutes we've been hearing news from inside the courtroom, witnesses stopped giving evidence. now over to the prosecution. the prosecution does not want to take the case further. the decision is up to the judge. if we expect a decision will happen sometime in the next two hours. to remind you two options, 35 years in prison for espionage and terror charges connected to the july 2015 coup, or, best-case scenario, what we're hoping for, some people have been claiming he has his house arrest and travel ban lifted and possibly by this evening he may be on a flight home. nothing is decided yet. this has been a political case decided at the highest levels of government, u.s. and turkey. what we're hearing that a deal has potentially been done which involves some kind of deal on turkish tariffs and turkish sanctions. we don't know the details a a lot of optimism. some people are leaving in a convoy. all we can do is hope for the best. about two hours we hope until we get some news on pastor brunson's release. back to you. steve: it necessary the hands of

back-room meeting. we have rod rosenstein battling it out with andrew mccabe, who is then deputy fbi director. there were reasons for both of them be recused. they should have both be removed from this investigation based on the evidence we found out now over the last year from congressional investigators. andy mccabe obviously knew what was going on within the fbi. he knew how this russia probe was being handled. they withheld exculpatory evidence from the foreign intelligence surveillance court. even had problems before that with the hatch act violations and his wife, jill mccabe's unsuccessful run for virginia state office and $700,000 that she actually had in donations from people connected to the clintons. and rod rosenstein, to say the least, he wrote the memo actually authorizing the firing of comey. brian: right. >> he laid it all out. there were a lot of reasons for them to be recused.
