he says he is sort of a democrat and madeley. we are live at the white house on the north one with the latest on any possible shakeup. reporter: good afternoon. it is important to note that president trump was responded to a direct question about james mattis when he made the remarks. this wasn't something that he brought up on his own. it's important because over the past few months there have been periodic rumors and speculation that he along with other members of the cabinet could be replaced after midterm election. in this interview with 60 minutes president trump was asked about the high rate of turnover into the administration and if more people were going to go. he says yeah, probably. and says while he has a great cabinet there are some people he is not thrilled with. that is when he was asked about general mattis. >> what about general mattis? is he going to leave? >> i don't know he hasn't told me. i had lunch with him two days ago. i have a very good relationship

with him. it could be that he is. i think he is sort of a democrat if you want to know the truth. but general mattis is a good guy. we get along very well. he may leave. i mean at some point, everybody leaves. everybody. people leave. that is washington. >> less than a month ago james mattis flatly dismissed reports that he was preparing to depart the administration and today a spokesman for the pentagon respond to the president's remarks saying in a statement, secretary mattis is laser focused on doing his job. ensuring the u.s. military remain the most lethal force on the planet. this week, he is headed to vietnam for the second time this year as part of the u.s. efforts to counter china's military buildup in the region. outwardly at least, there is no indication that he is preparing to leave imminently. as for the president, he is a very busy week coming up as well. he plans to visit georgia and florida early this week. to visit some of the storm damaged areas there. eric: thank you so much. meanwhile saudi arabia is vowing to retaliate after the

stock market plunged 7 percent today. on fallout of the mysterious disappearance of "washington post" columnist and journalist, jamal khashoggi. despite claims by turkey that a 15 member hit team flew in two private just to carry out an assassination. here's florida senator marco rubio on how he says the administration should respond if the allegations are proven to be true. >> we need to be thought carefully because it needs to be strong and needs to be reciprocal and it needs to be live up to the level of the outrage and criminality and the fact it is proven to be true. >> i'm glad he didn't say exactly what were going to do but you see strong and meaningful not symbolic. eric: gillian turner has more on this disturbing story from washington. reporter: president trump admitted in an interview that saudi arabia could be to blame
1:04 pm
for the disappearance and alleged murder of journalist, jamal khashoggi pizza so far the saudis deny any involvement. but he says he took sanctioning off the royal family off the table. >> i actually think we would be punishing ourselves if we did that. reporter: when asked why he said there was an arms deal with them. he says a priority is to protect profits. >> if they do not buy from us they will buy from russia or china. reporter: so far saudi arabia has maintained a hard line on the issue deny, deny, deny. with ever substantiating evidence. yes they took the opportunity to echo the president's reasoning about the global economy. saudi state t.v. reported the kingdom of firms is targeted with any action, it will respond with greater action. the kingdoms economy has an

in the apparent murder of jamal khashoggi if that was ordered by saudi leadership there will be severe punishment. he is not rushing to retaliate. however, how forceful do you think the president should be in demanding answers from the saudi king salman? >> i think we will see what happens so far think there's been a great deal of speculation. but we really need to see a full transparent investigation carried out. hopefully, joined by turkey and saudi arabia to establish the facts here. once the full facts have been established, i think the white house will be in a position to be able to respond effectively to what is going on. but at the moment, we do not have the full facts available. and of course, this a bit of a dilemma for the united states. saudi arabia is very important
1:07 pm
u.s. ally on the world stage. and a key ally confronting the iranian at the moment. this is important big picture with regard to the long-term consequences of this and at the same time, any murder of a journalist, this is an extremely serious matter, no doubt i think that the u.s. administration takes this instance extremely seriously. and there will be some ramifications but it depends really upon establishing the full facts of what happened. arthel: does her gillian turner in the package that the president says regarding the u.s. arms sales to saudi arabia that he is not ready to take the deal off the table. here is the arizona senator, jeff flake on the very topic. >> i do think that arms sales will be affected. certainly involvement in yemen with saudi arabia will be
1:08 pm
affected. that involvement barely survived in the last go round with the national defense authorization act. it certainly will not survive with this kind of accusation if it is true. >> who has the leverage in this transaction? the u.s. or saudi arabia? >> i think both sides here. i think the president has made it clear that he would like to see the armed sales go forward with saudi arabia. not least because a lot of u.s. jobs are involved here but also, president trump does not want russia to step into the frame and replacement of the united states. i think there are important factors considering -- arthel: excuse me, if in fact, it is proven that the saudis had something to do comedy ordered the murder of mr. jamal khashoggi. and then which of the president do in terms of arms sales? because i understand the conundrum that if the president
1:09 pm
points out if the u.s. does not sell it to them, then so would russia or then would china. he does not want that, the money where the jobs going there. however, the u.s. is not a country that deals with people with blood on their hands. >> i think that the administration position so far has been that they do not wish to see this arms deal ended with saudi arabia. congress on the other hand as he pointed out with senator flake they have expressed a far tougher line on the matter. it remains to be seen how the administration will work with congress. but i think it is important to bear in mind at the moment, we do not know the full facts of the situation. the turkish government has a very strange relationship with saudi arabia. the turks have made quite wide ranging accusations against saudi arabia. it remains for the accusations to be fully proven.
1:10 pm
it is also a fact the turkish government itself -- arthel: excuse me. who should prove it? president trump suggested, listen in the next referrals i will call king salman. who is providing the answers? give turkey on one hand, they have something to present to the president as they would like him to see it. you have saudi arabia on the other hand with their perspective. who can the president really trust? and when do we need the president to really get to the bottom of this? because the longer it takes, and is just out there, just more time for speculation and perhaps, not a good look for the united states. >> well i think you know, right now, the united states is watching closely to see what turkey and saudi arabia do. united states does not have a direct role in terms of this investigation. this is something that the turkish government and saudi governments have to work
1:11 pm
together on and there needs to be full transparency and accountability here. but it is not the role of the united states to step in and take over some sort of investigation. they are relying on riyadh and ankara to work together on this matter but the reality is of course, there's a very strange relationship between turkey and saudi arabia and it will complicate matters.also, european government taking very clear interest in this british french german government being closely following developments. the major international ramifications here but i think overall, the u.s. saudi relationship is very powerful and very robust. and i think that the white house will certainly continue a very close relationship with the saudis especially in terms of confronting the iranian threat and expect the relationship is going to continue. but certainly, the nightsticks would like to seek clear answers with regard to what has

administration. he has replacements on standby. this comes as the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein declined to request by the house judiciary committee to be interviewed about statements regarding secretly recording the present. mr. rosenstein said those comments were sarcastic and this is jim jordan on why mr. rosenstein must answer for his comments. >> we needed to answer questions but all kinds of issues. with the trump-russia investigation but specifically the statement that he said we talked about recording the commander in chief of our great country and talked about the 20 for the minimum. thus i want to know that. arthel: we have a report from axios with us now. can he decline this request? >> we'll see how it plays out. but i think what's important to remember is that i believe it was congressman mark meadows

that said he would subpoena rod rosenstein if he decline so if it's important to remember that this is not going to go away anytime soon.i mean republicans really want to hear more from rod rosenstein about the statements that he supposedly made. which again, he said if they weren't made in seriousness but it is something that is not typical for the deputy attorney general to joke about. so the republicans are not going to let this go. something they want to hear more from him specifically about. arthel: meanwhile it appears president trump and rod rosenstein kissed and made up. should house judiciary committee push this and possibly subpoena mr. rosenstein?>> i'm not sure that they are going to view that as everything under the bridge. we know that the president and his department of justice have had to say the least, a strained relationship. he certainly is not his biggest fan. whether or not he plans to get rid of him right now, not to say that he couldn't later.
