security scare in an air national guard base. authorities firing one shot at a car that breached a security gate at the 128th air refueling wing in milwaukee. no one was injured but the base was on lockdown for hours. two vehicles involved have been removed and an investigation is underway. also breaking right now, another violent weekend in chicago sees 27 people shot, two of them killed. police say they are getting almost no cooperation from witnesses. this coming just over two months after the deadliest weekend in city history which saw 74 people shot and 12 of them killed. so far this year, there have been nearly 1900 shootings, 430 of them deadly. and national geographic revealing some shocking details of a foiled as as nation plot against president trump by isis. in a two hour special, the network described the plan which was to go down during the president's visit to the philippines last year.

secret service agents tracked threatening posts on social media but did not find the suspect until moments before president trump landed. he was found about a mile from where the president was staying. talks in south korea overnight aimed to speed up agreements reached at last month's summit between kim jong un and president moon. moon said the north's economy is struggling so badly kim has no choice but to denuclearize. president trump saying on 60 minutes last night that he trusts kim jong un to get it done. >> i d do trust him, yeah. if i didn't trust him i wouldn't say that to you. wouldn't that be foolish to tell you right here on 60 minutes. >> remember what reagan said, trust but verify. >> i know. that's very true. the fact is, i do trust him. but we'll see what happens. heather: the president and kim plan to hold a second summit in

punishment. >> reporter: there is bipartisan anger brewing here on capitol hill. >> i don't think we should continue business as usual until we know exactly what's happened here. what we do know is this. he walked into the consolate and he never came out. so the only two things that could have happened is, he's alive and somehow still in there or he's dead and the saudis are the ones who did it. >> it's clear, we cannot have anil lian ally who murders in d in their own consolate a critic. the time is now wit for the unid states to get out of the saudi-led war in yemen. >> reporter: you heard the president mention that the saudis denied any involvement here and they have promised retaliation if there are any sanctions as a result of these -- of any possible involvement in this disappearance. heather: they had a very strong response and then they tried to scale it back a little bit.

over, which they're flailing at doing this, talking about kanye instead of midterms, either that or republicans will continue to win, it's that plain and simple. heather: the latest poll shows that president trump's approval rating is increasing ahead of the midterms. president trump keeping busy on the campaign trail this week. stumping for republican senate candidates in three critical midterm states. he'll be in montana on thursday, friday he's in arizona promoting congresswomacongresswoman marth. on sa saturday he campaigns for dean heller. patriots and kansas city chiefs, they get their first loss of the season overnight. new england gets a late touchdown run from tom brady before this. >> brady, deep down the sideline. he has it. heather: that would set up a

heather: president trump hitting back hard after saudi arabia threatened action against the united states saying if the country is responsible for the disappearance of journalist jamal khashoggi the fallout will be severe. >> it's being investigated. we would be very upset and angry if that were the case. we're going to get to the bottom of it and there will be severe punishment. heather: joining me now with expert insight is ally aramesh. thank you for joining us. let's talk about what the president said just there. he said we'll get to the bottom of it, there will be severe punishment if in fact saudi arabia is responsible. >> i certainly hope the president follows through this with threat and this promise. there are many members of the president's administration and the national security team and foreign policy team that have not been happy with how the crown prince has been operating

for the past couple years now. saudi arabia is ani an ally, n important piece of american policy in the region. at some point we have to re-evaluate the cost that crown prince's actions and very youthful gambles have brought upon our interest in the region and the saudi stability in the region. saudi arabia should realize by returning the president's comments with threats -- heather: let's take a look at that, since you brought it up, as we discuss it. their original statement, he said the kingdom affirms the total rejection of any threats whether by waiving economic sanctions, repeating false allegations, the kingdom also affirms if it receives any action it will respond with greater action. that was their original tweet that went out. their comment. then they walked it back a little bit, saying to help clarify, recently issued saudi statement, the kingdom extends

its appreciation to all including the u.s. administration for refraining from jumping to conclusions on the ongoing investigation. >> so they're upping the ante. they realized very quickly that unking thupping the ante could . that's what i'm talking about, the crown prince takes action before thinking, he makes move before evaluating all the risks. his involvement in yemen, kidnapping the lebanese prime minister, cutting ties with canada. everybody criticizes for human rights. the involvement in iraq is opposite to our national interest. there's a whole host of actions the saudis have taken under his leadership that have not been exactly positive and if he wants to carry out those reforms long-term, he really needs american support. heather: what actions should we take, because the president has said that he probably will not cancel that $110 billion arms deal with the saudi government.

also treasury secretary steve mnuchin on october 23rd set to attend this investment initiative in saudi arabia. >> there has to be repercussions. there has to be consequences. saudi arabia's not going to wake up tomorrow and after over half a century of buying sophisticated american weapons systems to start buying russian or chinese or south african -- heather: that's what senator marco rubio said. >> that's not exactly true. we don't give foreign aid to the saudis. but foreign aid is one part of our ledge. but we make the best weapons. they're not going to buy migs from the russians. they're not going to buy terrible systems from the chinese. they have been trained by americans. they have very sophisticated american weaponry. and also we have leverage. their economic investment here is producing a lot of dough for the saudi as well. their reliance on our sort of umbrella of security is much

heather: welcome back to "fox & friends first." president trump hand first lady melania heading to the disaster zone today in the wake of hurricane michael. this as rescuers frantically search for thousands of people who are still missing. phil keithing is live in panama city with the latest on the recovery efforts. good morning, phil. >> reporter: good morning, heather. shortly after 9:00 eastern, president trump and first lady melania will marine one over to joint base andrews, get on air force one at 9:20 and depart, landing in florida about 11:25 eastern time, about 40 miles up the coast from where we are in panama city and then presumably they'll hop in a chop tear andpd take a tour of the miles and miles of destruction and damage and it won't be hard to find. we expect they'll fly over mexico beach, florida, which took the heaviest winds and the

biggest storm surge, anywhere between 10 and 20 feet. we just don't know yet. noaa hasn't medicine pointed it down. -- hasn't pin pointed it down. also, tyndall air force base, where the eye went over it, massive destruction. the general that's in charge of the air force base called it a total catastrophe. we expect the president of course as the commander in chief would definitely fly over that and check it out. we're not sure whether the president will land at all but that remains to be seen. fema director brock long was in mexico beach, florida yesterday and he said this is a long-term recovery. >> the longest mission will be getting thousands of people out of shelters, into more suitable living conditions. there's going to be a tough long-term housing mission that lies ahead. it's going to take many months. we will do what we can to help people kickstart recovery.

>> reporter: a family spells "help" on their property. a woman was checking on her grandmother's house while using noaa's satellite images and suddenly spotted this. they alerted the bay county's sheriff's department who went over to the house and sure enough everybody was fine and okay. she wasn't sure whether her grandparents had evacuated. they did not. they chose to stay. they have the help they were asking for now, so a happy ending. heather: amazing, use of technology we see following these hurricanes from the drones to using the noaa satellites, it really is something. thank you so much, phil. i know you have a long day with the president there. we appreciate it. >> reporter: thank you. heather: another big-time democrat distancing himself from comments like these. >> when they go low, we kick em. heather: vermont senator bernie

heather: president trump sounding off on his plans for the mueller investigation. >> well, i don't pledge anything but i will tell you, i have no intention of doing that. i think it's a very unfair investigation because there was no collusion of any kind. >> you won't flinch? >> i don't want to flinch we have the latest on the russia probe including one of the people behind the infamous trump dossier pleading the fifth this week. >> reporter: glen simpson will plead the fifth rather than

testify to congress. his firm was paid by the dnc and clinton cam bain for the work on the trump dossier. he questioned the motives, saying the goal of the committee is to discredible and damage witnesses. he told another house panel he first met with bruce ohr after the 2016 he'll ex. 2016 election. that contradicts e-mails that shows meeting earlier. at least five sources brought the dossier to the fbi's attention before and after election day. former fbi director james comey seemed vague about the dossier and what he knew of its political origins. >> who told you about them? >> i don't remember. someone on the senior staff. i remember they briefed me about it, explained they came from a reliable source. >> reporter: other information about russian hacking was provided to the fbi by a lawyer

whose firm commissioned the trump dossier. that revelation was confirmed by the fbi's former general counsel, james baker. a yo spokesman denied any connection to the dnc and clinton campaign work. ron johnson sent a letter to director wray requesting ought documents about the fbi contact, as well as membe.rosenstein ande panel failed to agree on terms for a capitol hill appearance this week. katherine hairage, fox news. heather: we'll see what develops this week. israel's prime minister putting hamas on notice following another weekend of violent protests. he's threatening to deliver, quote, very painful blows to the terror group if they don't end demonstrations along the gaza strip. they've staged protests along the border since march. seven palestinians were killed after breaching the border fence

re-election in 2020. mitt romney used to be one of the biggest critics of then candidate donald trump. >> donald trump is a phony, a fraud, the bullying, the greed, the showing off. heather: but now romney is denying that he led the never-trump movement. >> you led the never-trump movement. what happened with that? >> i don't think that was the case. president trump was not the person i wanted to become the nominee of our party but he's president now. the policies he's promoted have been pretty effective. heather: despite his once sharp criticism of the president, you heard it there, the utah senate candidate now backtracking. the most recent polling has him leading his democratic opponent by a wide margin. ah, politics. the trump bump appears to be alive and well as president trump's approval rating hits the second highest point of his

presidency so far, and it comes just in time for the midterms. so is this going to bring about a red wave in november? here now to debate it is democratic political analyst robert patillo and conservative commentator, amanda head. thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> thanks for having us. heather: let's talk about those approval ratings right now. we can take a look at that, ahead of the midterms, just a couple weeks away. 41% approve of president trump right now, that's compared to 54% who disapprove and then you can see the difference from just a short time ago. so what do you attribute the main thing in terms of his increasing approval ratings. i'll start with you, amanda. >> sure. i think you have to look at this from a momentum perspective. in january, democrats were enjoying a 13 point lead in the general ballot. fast forward to this summer and

that lead had diminished to 4 points with i think it was a 3 point margin of error, so negligible lead at best. then the kavanaugh confirmation happened which i definitely don't think that anyone would assert that that helped the democrats. none of us here are statisticians. i think it would be difficult to ascertain that with all of these metrics trending in favor of republicans, that democrats can still come out on top. heather: robert, at the same time if you kind of break apart the polling a little bit more there, you see that specifically when it comes to the economy his approval numbers increasing as well to like 49% compared to i think it is, what, 46% disapproving in terms of the economy. >> well, i think it's obvious that we have unemployment in the mid-3s, down from the recession levels under the bush administration and part of the obama administration. of course, he gets credit for those numbers. i think democrats have failed to articulate a message that's cognizant to the needs of the american people. we've got them off on mueller

and comey and russia and gnaw thakavanaughthat we haven't talt jobs, education and the ability for families to support themselves. i think you will see the numbers changing and you will see the blue wave. we have a month to get the word out there. heather: let's get object to that. it contributes to the polling numbers and who is doing better where. democrats actually apparently want hillary clinton off of the campaign trail, due in part to what she said along with eric holder who said go low. so is their rhetoric actually hurting more than helping? let's listen to some of what they had to say. >> you cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about. >> michelle always says when they go low, we go high. no, no. they go low, we kick em. heather: robert, i'll get you to respond to that since you were just talking about it, that

type of rhetoric. >> well, i think particularly addressing secretary clinton, that she showed herself in 2008 and 2015 to be a gaffe machine, between her comments on deplorables, all she does is motivate the right. any time she is out there, she is motivating republicans to turn out in record numbers many we have new faces in the democrat parties. we have new people out here who need to push the vanguard forward. if the elder statesmen of the party want to be in a support role, helping to raise money, helping to provide infrastructure, helping to unite the party then fine. if you're going to be a divisive force, we have to get the new people in. heather: it's interesting how things appeared to have changed for the clintons. amanda, you get the final word here, just announcing a 13 city tour along with former president bill clinton and hillary clinton and democratic strategist says they're released that tour won't start until 12 days after the midterms. >> i can understand that relief.

i agree with robert, there's some people in the democratic party that need more sunlight. i don't think you can blame all of this on hillary clinton. i think the way they treated kavanaugh, the entire confirmation process, the fact that you have other democratic leaders in office, compelling supporters to go out and harass trump supporters and the fact that two years later, two years later democrats have yet to put forth any meaningful policy alternatives for the people. heather: i think people definitely want solutions at this point versus this angry rhetoric regardless of what side it comes from. robert, you amanda, thank you both for joining us. we appreciate it. >> thank you. heather: the time now is about 20 minutes until the top of the our many alec baldwin makes an snl return to mock the oval office meeting between president trump and kanye west. >> let's remember the big lesson today that black people love me,

heather: welcome back. the mayor of portland defending his hands-off approach of not letting police interfere with antifa protesters. ted wheeler responding to a viral video showing demonstrators harassing drivers protesting the death of a black man shot by police last month. this coming days antifa members counter protested a patriot prayer march, burning an american flag, someone dashing in to save it from the flames. four people were injured. high school band is barred

from a yearly state competition over a halftime show depicting cops at gunpoint after two local officers were killed on duty. the jackson school district in mississippi ruling band members at forest hill can't wear uniforms or march at football games for the rest of the season, as the state representative demands a watchdog investigation into whether the fake guns were bought with taxpayer dollars. the band director is keeping his job. officials say there was no ill will in the halftime show. a fox business alert, the last chapter for sears? tracy korosko has a big announcement breaking overnight from the retailer. >> reporter: sears has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. this doesn't mean it's the end of sears. they do plan on restructuring, staying in business, but it does mean that they will close 142 stores by the end of the year. that is in addition to 46 that

should close within the next month or so. this comes as the company couldn't pay back $134 million debt payment. that was due today. there's been a lot of speculation that sears could file for bankruptcy. unfortunately, now we are seeing this happen as the company more than 100 years old has been struggling the last decade or so as online shopping has taken off. heather: it really is a shame. perhaps they can come to something like where that toys r us, there's a possibility they may come back. >> reporter: yes, come back stronger. heather: disney is stepping up, we talked earlier about hurricane michael and the cleanup from that. >> reporter: we've seen the devastation from all of the video there but as one of florida's largest employers with some 70,000 people working at walt disney world, disney says they're going to pledge $1 million to help with the victims. the devastated areas by hurricane michael, through the florida disaster fund, they're also saying that for any contributions that employees

that? >> i am just absolutely outraged that the new york times continues to undermine law enforcement and the rule of law. they have no -- it would be good if they had some shame but it's obvious that the new york times has no shame. this situation, we've got border patrol agents that have been attacked at the border because illegal immigration has gotten so bad and aliens have gotten bolder and they're protected by folks who are down there, attorneys who are down there shadowing the border patrol. it's gotten dangerous for them. and here the new york times goes out of its way to undermine these folks that are already in danger. i think it's shocking, it's sad, it's pitiful. heather: it really is misleading, there are approximately 60,000 employees for border protection.
