♪ jillian: good morning. a nice chillier than usual monday morning. you're watches "fox & friends first." i'm carlie shimkus. rob: it was a nice weekend. i'm rob schmitt. carlie, welcome to you. >> happy to be here. rob: three people arrested after a scare at an air national guard base. authorities firing one shot at a car that breached a security gate at the air refueling wing in milwaukee. >> no one was injured. the base was on lockdown for hours. two vehicles involved have been

removed as an investigation is underway. also breaking right now, another violent weekend in chicago sees 27 people shot, two of them killed. police say they are getting almost no cooperation from witnesses. this coming just over two months after the deadliest weekend in city history which saw 74 people shot, 12 of them killed. so far this year, there have been nearly 1900 shootings, 430 of them deadly. rob: big story here, national geographic revealing shocking details of a foiled assassination plot against president trump by isis. this will be in a two-hour special. the network describing the plan which was to go down during the president's visit to the philippines last year. secret service agents tracked threatening posts on social media but didn't find the suspect in this until moments before the president arrived. you see him here landing in

manila. now, the suspect was found about a mile from where the president was staying. that will be something to see. >> unbelievable. oh, my gosh. president trump and first lady melania trump heading to the disaster zone today in the wake of hurricane michael. rob: this as rescuers frantically search for thousands of people who are still missing. phil keating is live in panama city with the latest. thousands still missing, i think that's a shocking number. >> reporter: yeah, that should dramatically come down in the next couple days. part of the problem according to search and rescue teams and authorities is that the communications are so badly damaged and down, some places you have no cell service whatsoever, other places you have at&t but verizon phone -- but you have a verizon phone or vice per say. vice versa. they are going door-to-door, doing second and third inspections just to make sure nobody is inside and survived

and needs help. as for the president today, president trump and first lady melania, 9:20 a.m. they will depart d.c. on air force one. they'll fly to florida, landing at egland air force base, and then we presume -- we don't know for sure, but they would likely get into a helicopter and chopper down to see the hurricane damage all for themselves. mexico beach, florida, of course where we've been the past couple of days just widespread devastation, an absolute catastrophe there, that is the worst of the worse in a very condensed area, so many lives destroyed there. that town won't be the same perhaps ever again. but definitely nothing for three years, maybe, if not longer, to get that place back up and running. also eglan gland air force base, that's where the eye itself went over land, damage there is

catastrophic as well. so you would assume the commander in chief would check that out. take a look at this noaa image of a grandparents house who spelled out "help." to the right of the house, above the red card, it appears they spelled it out with logs. the granddaughter was checking out noaa images, spotted the "help" sign, alerted the sheriff's department. everybody is okay. rob: that is something else, phil. those pictures from mexico beach, it looks like a bomb went off. it's amazing what that storm did. thank you so much for that report this morning. president trump keeping busy on the campaign trail this week, stumping for republican senate candidates in three critical midterm states. he'll be in montana on thursday, pushing for matt roseendale. friday he'll be in arizona. and saturday he's campaigning for nevada senator dean heller. republicans fighting back

against mob tactics being used ahead of the midterms, it's term the left refuses to accept, that they're a mob. ben shapiro says no matter what they call it, the angry rhetoric from the left is reminding voters in his opinion what a mistake it is to put democrats in charge. >> for democrats, every available avenue of resistance against republicans is justified. riots aren't riots. they're uprisings. mobs aren't mobs. those are just angry people. according to the media and the political left, but i repeat myself, republicans are evil so even their speech is violence. democrats are good, so even their violence is speech. the democratic embrace of mob politics is ugly. it may be the reminder that american need that handing power to a group of people who cheer on the mob while attacking individual rights would be a terrible, terrible mistake. rob: there is a lot at stake this november. 35 senate seats up for grabs and

all 435 house seats are up for re-election as well. harvard going to trial today over accusations of admissions bias. the school is accused of discriminating against asian american students. the case could eventually reach the supreme court setting up a challenge to affirmative action. the ivy league school claims asian american admission has grown significantly since 2010. rob: there will be severe punishment, that is the stern warning to saudi arabia from the president if in fact this missing journalist was murdered. >> saudi arabia now denying any involvement. doug luzader is live in washington, d.c. with new developments. doug, what's going on? >> reporter: the saudis are pretty aggressively pushing back on this, saying they were not involved with the disappearance of a saudi journalist, jamal khashoggi, who entered the saudi consolate in istanbul last month and simply disappeared.

many believe a saudi team detained and killed him. the president said last night on 60 minutes there would be action if the saudis were involved. >> they denied every way you can imagine. there's something really terrible and disgusting about that, if that were the case. so we're going to have to see. we're going to get to the bottom of it and there will be severe punishment. >> reporter: if the saudis were involved, there's going to be enormous pressure from democrats and republicans in congress to take action. >> i don't think we should continue business as usual until we know exactly what's happened here because what we do know is this. he walked into that consolate and he never came out. so the only two things that could have happened is he's alive and somehow still in there or he's dead and the saudis are the ones who did it. >> it's clear, we cannot have an ally who murders in cold blood in their own consolate a critic. the time is now for the united

rob: welcome back. just three weeks until the midterms and republicans are now playing offense, trying to hold onthe senate as democrats begin to lose their lead in many of these key races, so which races should we be keeping an eye on? here to break it down, republican pollster kris wilson. thanks for coming on this morning. we're going to start off with the great state of texas, i believe. here we go. this is a big one, ted cruz and beto o'rourke. he's run a very impressive campaign thus far to get this close in texas. >> it's been close for a while. right now you've seen senator cruz start to extend his lead. a couple polls have him up nine points. o'rourke will probably go negative for the last three weeks. texans noted cruz. they didn't know beto owe owto .

he's become the unpopular. rob: we've got to keep an eye out, ted cruz looks more comfortable. >> pulling away. rob: you've got marsha blackburn and red tennessee the former governor. >> i've suspected the closeness of this race is a matter of marsha blackburn having to catch up. he was a former governor. she's been able to nation nailize the race. she's become a state-wide figure. you've seen her extend her lead. this one seems out of reach for the democrats. rob: that was getting nervous for the republicans, now it's me comfortable. heidi heitkamp. she was down i think 12 points and she voted against kavanaugh. is she toast? >> she's the incumbent senator.

she was able to win a race not many wer expected to win. they don't have voter registration. kevin cramer's been the congressman for a while. she voted for gorsuch but she voted against kavanaugh. that feels like a little bit of a throwing a vote away and applying for the next job in the democratic administration and saying i give up. that's what it looks like. most of the polling has representative kramer up by double digits. rob: it's been that way for a couple weeks now. >> it has. rob: this could be a flip for the republicans. he's a strong candidate, miss missouri a swing state. >> claire mccaskill, she probably would have lost in 2012 if you hadn't had todd acheen an implode toward the end of the campaign. she voted against gorsuch and kavanaugh. it is against where her consistent stinconstituents are. a couple polls have him up between 4, 6, 8 points.

it's another one where democrats are on the defense and republicans are starting to feel good about it. rob: that could be a flip there. let's talk about montana for a second many here. this is john tester's seat, the president can't stand this guy. he's going to try to help matt roseendale. >> this is one where i think -- matt roseendale is going to win if president trump goes there the weekend before the elections. he's so popular in the state of montana. john tester's been popular too. he's releasing information on the white house -- rob: the doctor. >> yeah, dr. ronny jackson. roseendale is working hard. i think right now you've seen a couple polls that see him moving into a tie a couple points ahead. rob: we'll have to see what happens. the last two, this is a very interesting race in arizona. >> these are tight races. they're republican defense seats, where senator heller who is running for reelection, you've got the flake open seat.

the interesting thing about this, the polling is all over the map. you've had it where both republicans are in dead heats, you've had them a couple points ahead and some polls have them pretty far ahead. i feel good from the standpoint of republicans winning. heller knows how to win in montana. he's continually had a lead. martha mcfally, it feels like le an oppo dump after comments that were made that didn't go too well. rob: the senate could go 54, 54 with the republicans. >> it could go. they're starting to extend their map a lot. rob: thank you very much. carley, over to you. carley: and the countdown continues there. the time now is 18 minutes after the hour. more winning for president trump. his approval rating rising. so who do democrats think is their best bet to take him on? we just found out.

racetrack. nascar, it's one of the biggest multibillion dollar sports series in the world. at its heart, it's a family business, not just at the top where the same family has been running it for 706 year 70 yeart down here as well, where there's second, third and fourth generation folks who are the heart and soul of this sport. there's no better example of that than a little team called tri-star motor sports. what are some of the challenges you face? >> we're bringing a knife to a gun fight on a weekly basis. there's things that we can offer that some of the big teams can't. there's some stuff they offer that we can't. i think we have a bid. and i think we have a place. carley: i have the privilege of talking to the man behind the wheel, corey la joy. what's it like working for a small, family run nascar team? >> this team is really unique with brian owning the race team. he's also there putting decals on at the shop and at the

racetrack. it's really cool. i was a family oriented racing team when i was coming up. you usually don't see that nowadays. carley: has anybody driven a nascar in heels? i might be the first. do you think you might want to pass it down to your kids. >> i wouldn't want it to continue on if it's a burden at the next level. if there's an interest, i would love to see it continuing. carley: you're the youngest team owner for a reason. your dad mark sadly passed away recently. tell me about him. >> he was just a racer, worked really hard and had a passion and a dream to own a race team and was a motor builder by trade and used that to get his foot in the door and just worked hard to make it happen. carley: your dad's name is on the car, it's on the other side. this is his legacy. how do you think he would feel about all the hard work you're doing, keeping it going? >> i would like to hope he would be proud of it. i think that's every kid's goal,

to make their parents proud. i'm sure he would have some stuff he thinks i'm doing wrong, and some stuff i'm doing right, but hopefully he would b would f it. carley: i enjoyed that experience so much. brian is such a cool guy. he works his tail off to keep his father's dream alive. he's the youngest team owner in all of nascar. i wanted to drive the car. rob: they didn't want you to. carley: i didn't push the issue. i just got done telling them a terrible driver. i said can i get in? it was fun. thank you, tri-star, for letting me do that. rob: the racing world is fun stuff. carley: it sure is. rob: 25 minutes after the top of the hour. we may have a glimpse into part of the democrats' midterm strategy and it might be illegal immigrants. >> they're told they're not worthy of being here, comprised of those who are documented and undocumented. carley: so is breaking the law

rob: that town is gone. carley: i guess it was good infrastructure with that one building? >> i guess if it was built to withstand 250-mile-an-hour winds. a lot of folks can't afford that. unnoterlyunfortunately this is e place standing. we have the cold fronts coming in, winter is coming. we're in the 20s across the northern plains, 19 in denver with a wind chill of 6 right now in denver many it's coming. here's the 24 hour temperature change across the plains states. we're dealing with cold fronts and troughs moving across the country and snow, yes, snow from the central rockies all the way up towards the great lakes. it's not a measurable snow but the snow is flying and you can see the past 24 hours that along the cold front, that's where we're seeing colder precipitation. here's the future radar as we go through time. we'll deal with the potential

for heavy rain across portions of texas and then we've got also the potential for rain and some mountain snow over the southwest. otherwise, a fairly calm forecast. here's the forecast precipitation, texas getting the brunt of the heavier rainfall. along that front we could see potential for heavier rain. you can see, rob and carley that we are dealing with cooler temperatures. carley: janice, i was at a farm doing the whole apple picking thing over the weekend and i saw a farmers almanac. i started reading it. i was with my mom. she goes just ask janice dean, a better answer. the tag line should be janice dean, better than the farmers almanac. north and south korea meeting overnight, trying to end the nuclear standoff with the u.s. the talks aimed to speed up agreements reached at last month's summit between kim jong un and president moon. moon telling local media the

north's economy is struggling so badly, kim has no choice but to denuclearize. president trump saying he trusts kim jong un to get it done. >> i do trust him, yeah. i trust him. that doesn't mean i can't be proven wrong. if i didn't trust him, i wouldn't say that to you. wouldn't that be foolish to tell you right here on 60 minutes. >> remember what reagan said, trust but verify. >> that's very true. the fact is, i do trust him. we'll see what happens. carley: the president and kim plan to hold a second summit in the next couple of months. fusion gps co-founder glen simpson planning to plead the fifth to avoid speaking in front of congress tomorrow. texas congressman john ratcliffe says he's not surprised. >> glen simpson had previously testified under oath to the house intelligence committee that he never met with bruce ohr or discussed with bruce ohr the steele dossier prior to the october fisa application in 2016

or the 2016 presidential election. that is in direct contradiction to what bruce ohr told me under oath last month. he's in real legal jeopardy, very clearly someone is not telling the truth. carley: simpson's firm was behind the controversial anti-trump dossier. president trump answering questions as to whether james mattis could be the next to leave the administration. >> i don't know. he hasn't told me that. >> do you want him to leave? >> i have a good relationship with him. i think he's sort of a democrat, if you want to know the truth. but general mattis is a good guy. we get along very well. he may leave. i mean, at some point everybody leaves, everybody, people leave. that's washington. carley: sort of a democrat. mattis has openly disagreed with president trump on several key issues including scrapping the iran nuclear deal and the role of nato. mattis has not responded.

another royal baby is on the way. just five months after tying the knot, meghan markle and prince harry are expecting their first child. the news breaking overnight, the duke and duchess of sussex will welcome the baby in the spring of 2019, something very exciting to look forward to next he yea . the kim landed in australia over the weekend, with meghan holding two binders in front of her stomach, sending baby rumors into overdrive. rob, are you excited? rob: that was fast. carley, thanks. president trump reigniting the battle to secure our border, warning there will be consequences for those who come here illegally. >> we're looking at a lost things. what we want to do is change the immigration laws. they're a laughing stock all over the world. >> are you willing though -- i

think you're saying it's under consideration. >> i want all the laws changed. >> the children specifically. >> there have to be consequences for coming into our country illegally. rob: with one section of the border wall just completed, what else needs to be done to secure the border. that's the question this morning. here to debate is shawndel somer and andrea riccio. thank you for coming on this morning. the president asked about the family separation deal and he was not afraid to say that, listen, we needed something to deter these families from coming across the border. shawndel, what did you think of that answer? >> family separation has been something that previous administrations have used as well to fight the immigration problem. in fact, president obama had the same policy and had his attorney general at the time argue that it was a deterrent to persons

crossing the border illegally. rob: apparently it wasn't enforced under obama is what we understand, right? it was a policy. >> it wasn't enforced to the degree that it has been with president trump and of course there was widespread attention garnered when you had 2,000 or so children separated from their parents back in the spring. since then, president trump reconsidered and put in a new policy, which not necessarily a better policy because some of the children are now held indefinitely in detention under the new policy. so it's a very complicated issue. it's not a -- there's no simple answer to it. rob: it's a tough issue to win. it is very complicated. andrea, over to you. 50,000, something like 50,000 illegal immigrants caught every month coming across the border. something has to be done. what did you think of that answer that he gave? >> sure, i think last night on 60 minutes we saw president

trump really double down on the policy of separating immigrant children from their parents at the southern border. and i think once you saw how that was playing out, he decided against it. and so looking at the midterm elections on november 6th, we see democrats and independent, unurban moms, young voters saying we don't want children to be separated from their parents at the southern border. we need to figure out a holistic fix to the situation. rob: we're going to move to the governor's race in georgia. we want to listen to a sound bite captured by a cell phone from stacy abrams. let's listen. >> the blue wave is african american. it's white. it's latino. it's asian pacific islander. it is made up of those who have been told they are not worthy of being here. it is comprised of those who are documented and undocumented. rob: so andrea, i want to start with you on this one.

the embrace of illegal immigration by the democratic party, for republicans -- i think if you ask most americans, do they believe that somebody should be able to come here illegally and be allowed to vote, most americans are going to say that doesn't make a lot of sense. what do you think about the embrace of this issue by your party? >> sure, look, since the supreme court overturned parts of the voting rights act, we have seen secretaries of state across the country do things to suppress the vote. we have seen legitimate voters being taken off the roles in states so that when folks show up to the polling booth, they're not allowed to vote. that's a real problem. on the world stage, you know, everyone looks up to america as this wonderful democracy and we need to be a that democracy. so we need to be ensuring that everyone -- rob: what about illegal immigrants? i understand what you're saying and i agree with you. what about people that come here illegally? >> absolutely, i mean, we have strong laws to ensure that only

people who are registered are registered. but we can walk and chew gum at the same time. we can make sure that people who should be voting are voting and people who shouldn't be voting aren't voting. rob: shawndel, does that answer satisfy you? >> voter i.d. laws are reasonable restrictions on voting rights. the idea that you have to have an i.d. card to vote is not something that i think most people find offensive. stacy abrams' comments about illegal immigrants being included in the blue wave were probably designed to attract those voters who may have a relative who is undocumented or as andrea mentioned, more moderate voters in the state of georgia. rob: it was an interesting comment, especially in red georgia. i was surprised to hear her say it. it may be a comment she ends up regretting. thank you for your time. we appreciate it. >> thank you. carley: interesting stuff.

trying to portray him as weak of it's attacking his campaign slogan which is "tough aztecs a texas ." >> if somebody called my wife a dog and said my daddy was in on the kennedy assassination, i wouldn't be kissing their -- [bleep]. you give them a few choice words or drag their blee [bleep] by te wood shed. come on, ted. carley: what do people think about this ad? >> independents and republicans gave it a b. this is what happened when people follow advice, let's get tough. it doesn't work. carley: it was a confusing ad. i wasn't sure where it was going. that ad, by the way, not endorseendorsed.
