columnist apparently killed during an investigation. rob: griff has more. >> reporter: secretary pompeo is on the ground. he's meeting at this very moment we believe with king salman. he was met at the airport by the foreign minister. all this comes on the heels of president trump's phone call with king salman who firmly denied any involvement in khashoggi's death and saudi arabia may be preparing to admit that they accidentally killed khashoggi in an unauthorized interrogation gone wrong. the president floating his own thoughts on what may have happened. >> it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. who knows? we're going to try getting to the bottom of it very soon. >> reporter: in addition to secretary pompeo's meeting with king salman, it will also include meeting with the crown prince, a lunch meating with the foreign minister and later tonight continu dinner with then

prince. we were told the u.s. will continue to ask for a thorough investigation into what happened to jamal khashoggi. the devastated family issuing a statement saying we are following the conflicted news regarding the fate of our father after losing contact with him two weeks ago after he disappeared. our family is trauma tized and yearns to be together during this painful time. if saudi arabia turns out to be responsible for his death, the president has promised punishmenpunishment. even if the president doesn't act, there are signs that congress is almost certain to act. we'll keep you posted right here and bring you the developments as secretary pompeo meets with king sal pmaman with a lot more important meetings coming. carley: thank you for that reporting. the whole situation could have

big-time consequences. switching gears, the co-founder of fusion gps, the firm behind the anti-trump dossier, will plead the fifth today on capitol hill. glen simpson will appear before lawmakers under subpoena but not answer questions. this as carter page, the former trump campaign aide, who was spied on as a result of the dossier, sued the dnc for defamation. >> it goes beyond any damages or financial aspects. you look at the damage it did to our democratic systems and our institutions of government back in 2016 and i'm just trying to get some justice in terms of getting some disclosure. rob: all right. taking a look now at live pictures from riad, saw give sa. mike pompeo sent there by the president to get answers about

man, if he is indeed dead. he said he doesn't want to punish the american economy and american jobs by having to go after saudi arabia, he doesn't want to punish lockheed martin and other companies like that in the united states by sanctioning saudi arabia over the apparent death of this journalist at the saudi consolate in istanbul, turkey. he is technically missing at this time, jamal khashoggi. carley: on capitol hill, we're switching gears, jeff sessions -- rob: i'll take this one. jeff sessions ripping federal judges over blatant anti-trump bias. >> the courtrooms are not ledge legislative chambers, they're not bully pulpits. we don't need political judges. judges are subject to the same criticism as other political leaders are, sometimes they might be called on to be replaced.

rob: the attorney general's remarks coming in front of the heritage foundation. session says rulings from these judges are forcing the president to fight back which is tying up his time. carley: a democrat senate candidate is accused of treason after a radio interview surfaces 15 years later. listen to this. >> i want to go fight in the taliban army, i'd go over there and i'm fighting for the taliban. that's a personal decision. carley: republican congress woman and former air force combat pilot martha mcsally bringing up the interview during their heated senate debate. >> i want to ask right now whether you're going to apologize to the veterans and me for saying it's okay to commit treason. >> we're engaging in ridiculous attacks and smearing my campaign and she's just trying to cut, cut, cut and not share the full picture. carley: interesting race there. both candidates are vying for arizona's open senate seat.

rob: vice president mike pence is set to survey the damage left by hurricane michael in georgia today. carley: this after president trump and the first lady got a close look at the devastation, at least 19 people are dead with billions of dollars worth of damage. president trump praising the recovery efforts and vowing to send federal aid. >> i spoke with rick scott in florida, governor, you know that, we're right with you and we'll be helping alabama, have to take care of the people. so the deficit's always a problem for me but we take care of our people. carley: janice dean is tracking the latest in the forecast. what's going on? >> hello, good morning. we've got a lot of cold on the map, how about that? record cold in a lot of states. all of this cold courtesy of our friends in canada. look at how far south -- i was raised in canada. i'm a friend. i know this. halloween, we used to put our

ms-13 gangs now the number one crime threat in the united states, overtaking terrorists and drug cartels. this according to the justice department rolling out a new task force to fight the gang which is headed by the deputy attorney general, rod rosenstein. >> they sell violence and poisonous drugs, they bribe public officials to fuel corruption, they terrorize innocent, law abiding citizens. we need to use every tool in the government's arsenal to combat them. rob: this new crime unit is to submit a strategy to fight mean within 90 90 days.

carley: two members of a gang just arrested for attempted murder. police say the two knocked a new york teen off his bike and repeatedly stabbed him. that teen suffering extensive nerve damage. officers arresting the men after their bloody shirts matched the victim's dna. it's unclear why they targeted the 17-year-old. both face up to 25 years behind bars if convicted. rob: all right. harvard university on trial this morning for what some people are calling racial discrimination against asian americans. carley: very interesting case here. the trial is expected to make it all the way to the supreme court and challenge affirmative action law. kelly boase long is an asian american harvard student and he she joins us now. you are currently junior at harvard, right? >> yes. thank you so much for having me on. carley: glad you're here.

you know what harvard is like. you know what the admissions process is like. simply put, do you think harvard discriminates against asian americans? >> yeah, i think what we're seeing and what students are showing right now is that harvard has been raising the bar for asian americans and lowering it for other groups in the pursuit of racial diversity. harvard is pursuing this racial diversity for the sake of diversity itself and it's really a shallow thing to do, i think. i think we saw harvard did this with jews back in the 1920s as welwell where they kept numbers artificially low by using a subjective personal rating. i think it's demeaning to reduce applicants to their race and it's discriminatory. these practices have been reported on for years. i think it will be interesting to see what comes out of this case. rob: we want to show people exactly how this is alleged to be done. we're going to show you some

s.a.t. score requirements here. everybody remembers the s. a a.t.s. for black, hispanic and native american applicants harvard appears to be looking for a score around 1100 to get in. for asian women, though, look at the jump there, to 1350. and for asian men, 1380. we understand harvard is sending out fliers to students when they're in high school, based on these kinds of numbers, trying to get them to go ahead and apply to harvard university. when you see numbers like that, does that make any sense to you? >> no, definitely not. i think what we really see happening here is that vard is raising -- harvard is raising the bar for asian americans. asian americans consistently score higher on things like academics and extra cribbing exs and ratings for guidance

counselors. when it comes to the subjective measures, asian americans on a whole receive a lower personal rating. i think this is pitting people of color against each other and it's demeaning. carley: you bring up the personal rating. harvard says that race and academics are just some of the things that they take into consideration but there is also the sort of personality test they base admissions on and they look at things like courage and likability. do you think they're trying to get more well-rounded students or why would they take courage into consideration? >> yeah, i think that those are definitely important qualities to have in a student. but i think what's happening is that this is sort of being shown to be lower systematically for r asian americans and this isn't the personal rating that's coming out of alumni interviews when asian american apyo applics sit down one on one with someone but it's what ta the admissions office gathers from reading your profile.

why this growth we're seeing? maybe the deregulatory policies, the tax cuts contributing to this, 396,000 jobs over the 21 months have been added in the manufacturing industry. so a very positive sign of the economy. carley: speaking of money, one or two lucky people could be very rich coming up, right? >> we talked about this last week. no one won the jackpots over the weekend. now mega millions and powerball, a combined jackpot of more than $1 billion. so $654 million for the mega millions, that's a cash payout of $373 million. the odds of winning that, they are not great. that drawing is tonight. tomorrow, powerball, that jackpot is $345 million. but the combined odds of winning both, i want to give this to, one, in 88 quadrillion.

saudi arabia. he was sent there by the president to demand answers on the disappearance of jamal khashoggi. there are reports that you saudis will admit to accidentally killing that columnist during an interrogation. khashoggi was last seen earlier this month entering the saudi consolate in istanbul, turkey. we'll keep you posted on any developments there. also breaking, a search underway for this missing 13-year-old girl after her parents are found dead in their home. authorities believe jamie kloss is in danger, working to enhance a short 911 call is what they're doing right now. the only word that can be understood is "help." police believe she was taken by somebody with a gun. they don't have any leads on a suspect at this time. a horrifying story there. an urgent health warnings about the flu. a child who did not get vaccinated has child in florida. it is the first child to die from the flu this year. 183 kids died from the flu in the u.s. last year, the

when you look at the candidates that are running, they're talking about issues that are important to the american people. beto o'rourke is pulling crowds larger than trump rallies. he's talking about immigration, race relations, health care, those issues matter to the american people and the rest of the candidates around the country are doing the same. carley: eric holder, hillary clinton, they may not be running but they represent the party. does he have a point that the media may be he focusing on these controversial moments but down on the ground where it matters democrats are getting it done, what do you think? >> i think this is what independent voters who will matter in the midterm election are seeing on tv and that really does matter. because there's the politics of obstruction, right, this is the impeachment crowd, we've got to do away with president trump, do away with justice kavanaugh. i think that plays terribly among these voters. there's the politics of destruction. where we have people like maxine waters saying we need to

confront trump officials in restaurants and gas stations, you have eric holder saying we need to kick republicans. the rhetoric has really gone to a new low and i think that that really does matter when these undecided voters are looking at what party they want to control the houses of congress this upcoming year. carley: speaking of that rhetoric, let's take a look at the reaction to hillary clinton's civility comment. 47% of people polled disagree with her statement and 14% are undecided. you brought up independent voters. nathan, i want to ask you, are you concerned that some of these folks that could potentially vote for democrats are getting turned off by this sort of angry devie sieve commentary coming from some of the leaders within the party? >> i think it's an interesting question. we're certainly seeing it from both sides. donald trump and folks in his administration are referring to democrat as an angry mob and i'm

not a member of an angry mob. i'm just a concerned citizen who wants better for our democrat civil i think it's coming from both sides and we have definitely seen it in charlotesville, there was a rally where heather hire was killed by a neo-nazi. in new york there was a group called the proud boys who were beating, yelling homophobic slurs. i think the rhetoric has escalated on both sides. we are seeing violence coming from the right. carley: you do bring up a good point. president trump has made his fair share of controversial comments. do you think that democrats are just responding to rhetoric with more divisive rhetoric? >> the governments of democratic past keep coming to haunt them. if you're a democrat, you're looking at that hillary clinton interview and saying why is this happening 21 days out from an

election? i think the democrats right now, they're attempting to fight president trump back using some of the president's own tactics, you know, being out there and being loud and being certainly controversial at times. as we saw in the republican primaries, that didn't work out too well for the republicans who tried that against him. there seems to be a uniqueness to the president to be able to deliver those kind of barbs. carley: you've got to think, there's got to be a better way to talk about politics than constantly spiraling out of control into violence and all that. >> we can all agree on that. carley: the time now is 36 minutes after the hour. elizabeth warren finally taking that dna test. >> what do the facts say? >> the facts suggest that you absolutely have native american ancestry in your pedigree. carley: how that test is now

middle school allegedly tells a student to turn his gop t-shirt inside out. that's the shirt. the boy's mom said a staff member at the florida school told him to change. she says it was all part of his republican nerd outfit for spirit week. the school district said employees are not allowed to wear politically charged shirts but students can. they said they apologized to the family. carley: elizabeth warren's dna test backfires. the cherokee nation denouncing her results, saying they don't prove her native american heritage by any means. rob: todd pyro joins us with more on the fierce backlash and how the democrat tries to pin it back on the president. what an embarrassing story. >> following warren's release of a campaign video playing up her latest dna test, the cherokee nation really dropped the mic, responding in part, quote, using a dna test to lay claim to any connection to the cherokee

nation or any tribal nation even vaguely is inappropriate and wrong. it makes a mockery out of dna tests and its legitimate uses while dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens who ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. senator warren is undermining tribal interest with her continued claims of tribal heritage. that statement came amidst a day of twitter tirades from warren, first posting the boston globe story highlighting the dna test and firing dozens of attacks against the president. as for the article, the globe issued a correction to its math, downgrading her results to between 1/64th and 1/1,024th native american. the article noted the analysis was based not on native american dna but on mention peruvian -- mexican, peruvian and columbian dna. a study said the average

rob: the governor of mississippi breaking his silence on a high school band's half time show depicting police at gunpoint after two officers were killed in the area just before the show went on. republican phil bryant says forest hill high staff members in charge of the act should be fired. he says the type of person should not be, quote, managing the lives of our kids. the high school says there was no ill will in the show but barred the band from performing at any more games this season.

carley: the merrell o mayor ofd promises a new ordinance allowing protesters to exercise their constitutional rights. it comes after ted wheeler defended his hand off approach of not letting police interfere with violent antifa protesters. emma michelle joined us earlier who experienced violence firsthand. >> i went to one of the first antifa riots in portland in 2016 to film. i actually had one of the organizers look me in the eye and say if you're here to film for the, quote, wrong reasons then we're going to, quote, take care of you. that violent threat has turned to violent action in my own city. carley: the president of the national i.c.e. council says mayor wheeler left the people of portland to fend for themselves. rob: a democrat in pennsylvania and a veteran of the gulf war forced to resign over a year-old facebook post that reads, quote, i stand for

the flag, i kneel for the cross. carley: this post setting off a social media frenzy among party members who labeled it as insensitive but he's not backing down on his beliefs. rob: here to share his side of the story is former executive director for the allegheny county, pennsylvania democratic party and marine corps veteran mark salvis. thank you for coming on this morning. do you believe that that post, that facebook post about standing for the flag singularly is the reason that you were asked to resign? >> well, it was a combination of two posts, actually, that i had posted, both took place before i accepted the position of executive director. rob: and tell us a little about the second post. we see the stand for the flag, it would be very disappointing if that's what led to your resignation. what is the second post? >> well, the second post was a close personal friend of mine,

officer michael roth felled, our families have been close for years. he was involved in a shooting which was a tragedy where a young man lost his life and my wife and i wanted to reach out and show support for the family in their time of grief and we did a small post on facebook regarding maybe fund raising, show of support, words, things like that, that was deemed insensitive as well. carley: you've known this police officer since he was about 3 years old and that post was supporting his family. pennsylvania representative ed gainey called the post insensitive to african americans who support the democratic party. how would you respond to that? >> well, ed and i have known each other for a long time. i was grateful that ed did come out and say he knows me to not be racist but he thought it was insensitive. i disagree. i stand for the flag. i am unabashedly patriotic.

rob: let's go back to the officer. this was east pittsburgh, a car involved in a drive-by shooting, the drive-by shooting had just occurred from this vehicle. this officer pulls over this car and then a couple men run from the car and one of them is shot and killed while running away. he's been charged with homicide at this point but he hasn't been convicted, is that correct? >> that is correct, yes. rob: do you think -- is it taking it too far to punish you just for showing support for a man who has just been charged with a crime but hasn't been through the court of law yet? >> well, i think we're a nation of laws and he will certainly have his day in court and the justice system will decide whether or not he's guilty. but until then, there's a human side to all of this, both families are grieving and i just happen to know the officer's family very closely. and we decided we wanted to show support and be there for them as they were for us when my family
