unmasking dozens of priests accused or facing credible accusations of sexually abusing american children. let's get to it. >> now, shepard smith reporting live from the fox news deck. >> shepard: first from the fox news deck, the murder happened. there is word police in turkey found certain evidence that somebody killed the missing "the washington post" contributor at the saudi consulate in istanbul. that's according to the associated press citing high level turkish officials. we don't know more about what they claim to have found. president trump tells the fox business network any u.s. response should hinge on what, if anything, members of the saudi royal family knew about this. we'll have more on that in just a moment. in earlier reports, turkish officials disclosed details of a gruesome operation involving interrogations, torture, and a bone saw. they say saudi agents killed jam mall khashoggi and

attacked him or hacked him to bits. saudi officials call the claims baseless. now, there is word they are considering the, the saudis, whether to say that agents who were not authorized to murder, actually killed khashoggi during an interrogation that wept wrong. that's according to the "wall street journal's" reporting and also of cnn. the journal's parent company and fox news parent company share common ownership. secretary of state mike pompeo met with saudi leaders today. we're told he spoke with the king who officially rules the country and his son, more importantly, the crowned prince mohammed salman in effect the country's day-to-day leader. the prince is said to be especially close to president trump's senior advisor and son-in-law jared kushner. the "new york times" previously reported a friend of the crowned prince mbs was actually the killer himself. and now some members of the president's own party are

half hour. the president got off the phone with saudi leadership and tweeted about it just spoke with the crowned prince of saudi arabia who totally denied any knowledge of what took place in their turkish consulate. he was with the secretary of state mike pompeo during the call and told me that he has already started and will rapidly expand a full and complete investigation into this matter. answers will be forthcoming shortly. the president should also speak soon, if he hasn't already, to secretary pompeo separately, outside of earshot of mohammed bin salman. pompeo will head to turkey tomorrow for meetings there and should be back in the united states tomorrow evening and be able to deliver a full in person report to the president. president trump spoke about this himself in an interview with trish regan to air on fox business tonight at 8:00. the president saying that he has had denials from sing salman yesterday as well as mohammed bin salman, but if the saudi leadership is

pompeo meeting again with crowned prince mohammed bin salman. they had dinner this evening. this was after a meeting earlier today. the two met for about 40 minutes in rye yaw riyadh. we are strong and old allies, we face our challenges together. the past, the day of and tomorrow. the trump administration has repeatedly warned of consequences, though it's unclear specifically what the administration is considering if it's determined that the saudi government is responsible for the disappearance of jamal khashoggi. the secretary is in the middle of a very hastily arranged trip. president trump called the secretary on sunday night. less than 24 hours later he was on a plane to riyadh as the administration says to try figure out who is responsible. as many in congress are now saying, they simply do not believe the answers that saudi arabia is putting out on this. the secretary has also met while in riyadh with the saudi king and foreign minister. now, usually, when the secretary goes to saudi

>> not yet, shep. we haven't seen the report yet. in fact, a lot of evidence coming out of the turkish government has been quite oblique. they have said that they have evidence that they got from yesterday's investigation which proves khashoggi was killed in the consulate. remember, this was 14 days after khashoggi went into the consulate. there was a great fear that evidence may have been lost. nevertheless, they say they have found this thing but erdogan come out today and saying they had also found surfaces which had been newly painted over that does indicate if true an attempt to conceal evidence on behalf of the saudis. on top of that a cleaning crew was seen wheeling in boxes of supplies earlier in the day. toxic material used to scrub inside had been masked. turkish authorities have always said they knew exactly which room khashoggi outside last night, journalists could see uv light in an upstairs room. a search just not for items but also for blood and d.n.a. well, today the search moved on and the police are now searching the console

journalist's residence in istanbul. he actually flew out of the country just one hour before that search started and that building is where a number of vans were seen pulling into after they left the consulate on the night khashoggi was missing, that will be another particular search particularly the guard are garden there. the consulate had already flown out. reminder of the victim himself. today khashoggi's family released a statement saying our family is traumatized and yearns to be together during this painful time. the strong, moral and legal responsibility which our father instilled in us obliges us to call for the establishment of an independent and impartial international commission. now, saudi arabia will say that's what they have set up. it's set by lead prosecutor. saudis are not been seen in this investigation. whether or not they are working with the tuckers is anothe -- turksall together.

i think in many ways on the goals they had a lot of the same goals where jamal khashoggi disagreed with the crowned prince was about the process. and khashoggi said you have to have a bottom up process. there has to be discussion and contention and you have to have disagreements and that will get you to the right place. and in his view, the crowned prince said i will decide what we will do and everybody will too it and there wasn't a difference, i think more than about 10% on the destination. there was a difference about the process of getting to that destination. >> shepard: he mbs for reform socially on religious constraints but not on a sort of dictatorial regime. not on the ruling of the royal family. he wanted to be mbs to be the end all-be all along the way. >> well, in his feeling, and i have spoken to him and to others in the saudi leadership, their feeling is if you open it up, the system will not only be

inefficient and chaotic but the bad guy also come out and they will tear everything down. so the only way to get to a different place is to push off any sort of political reform, to push off open discussion, that that can come later. right now, saudi arabia is under an urgent need to reform. what jamal khashoggi said was the only way to reform the system is if you engage people, you free people to follow all kinds of ideas. some of them will be good. some of them will be bad. but you have to have the political and speech openness alongside the change. that's a necessary part of the change. and on that, they grew increasingly apart. >> shepard: which would explain why he would become a target of the saudi royal family. mbs though for his part, i mean, the list is long. he has kidnapped -- he has kidnapped a prime minister, he has locked up 300 members of the royal family and others. tortured some. extorted money from others

these days certainly. really just a question of how brazen some of these 2020 prospects wants to be. most folk holsz we consider to be top tier candidates aren't quite so aggressively and in your faces a garr sety, right? we can talk about people like cory booker, elizabeth warren, go down the list. these people know that they can't have it look like they are putting their own presidential ambitions above the party's ambitions this far. right? so cory booker has visited 21 states, raised $7 million for cycle democrats. he made time for family reunion i don't know in iowa last week. spent three or four days on the ground and campaigned for just about every democrat who would have him from state auditor general to state legislative candidates. elizabeth warren may be one of the most aggressive quietly, and interestingly, that ar our reporting found she essentially has former staffs who are now working for state parties in places

>> shepard: sounds like it. dean of admissions of one of the prestigious universities of all the world is defending the school's admission process in a federal court today. a nonprofit group is suing harvard university saying it discriminates against asian american applicants holding them to a higher standard than students from other races. school officials have denied any discrimination. they say race is just one of the many factors that they look at when considering applicants and what they want to do is create a diverse student body. jackie heinrichs is live in boston now. jackie? >> shep, what is really on trial here is affirmative action as we know it the case has the potential to change admissions practices which have largely remained the same since the u.s. supreme court upheld affirmative action in 1978. fresh from the courtroom today harvard admitting that if it stops considering race in its admissions process, asian students would benefit. the population of black and hispanic would drop in half.
