welcome to "the five" live from dallas. we are here on the campus of southern methodist university for the whole hour. the smu mustang band playing for us. we have a great show. we have a ton of tight races are talked about in the midterms, the migrant caravan getting even bigger as president trump threatens to stop it. plus, we are answering questions from some of the students in the crowd, and lawrence has some big surprises for us that he brought back from the texas state fair. greg, how is texas treating you so far? >> greg: i love it. i will say that a marching band is not good for the hangover. >> jesse: you had sweet tea last night. >> greg: the worst thing you could hear, you are reeling from pain. we have guys and girls. it's like outnumbered.

>> dana: i love a marching band. i love the marching band. thank you for being here. >> jesse: juan, do you feel welcome here the great state of texas? >> juan: someone else said they are the lone star. i feel like the lone star. what fun it is to be right next to the stadium. ma'am, i tell you what. smu football. people know about the mustangs. [cheers and applause] >> jesse: there is definitely no kneeling going on in that stadium. >> greg: that's huge. their bathrooms are massive. their bathrooms are dark and large. >> lawrence: i know that we have a lot of fox news supporters because we defend liberty here, they believe in the president. it's good to be back home. >> greg: they also buy a lot of our books. they do. >> jesse: they say everything is bigger in texas, including greg's ego. there's a lot to cover, so lets was go right to it. with 15 days to go,

president trump's approval rating hits an all-time high. searching past -- this comes as the president heads to houston, texas, tonight for what's expected to be a massive rally for senator ted cruz. supporters began lining up over the weekend to get a good spot, and the president's 2020 campaign says 100,000 people have rsvped. among these signs for republicans, president trump very confident going into the midterms. >> president trump: i think the republicans are going to do very nicely. we are doing very well with the senate, and he was just asking about the race. other than two years ago, the presidential race, i've never seen spirit like i see right now. i think the republicans are going to do very well. >> jesse: meanwhile, democrats

tamping down expectations of a so-called blue wave. >> you always knew this election was going to be close. i don't use the term blue wave. i still have a lot of confidence in the house. i know that the senate is a tougher map we have great candidates. i look at these governors' races and i see the work being done. >> jesse: dana, the generic congressional matchup that what is shrinking to single digits, primarily if you look at the average. the competitive races, very tight. what do you think about this so-called blue wave at this point? >> dana: i think it's not possible in the senate. i think the republicans will keep the senate and add to their numbers there. it's a tough year for democrats. that math is hard. but guess what, it doesn't get any better for them and 2020 really, really because of where the states are where you have contests. turnout will be important and you might be able to tell a lot about 2020 once we finalize this midterm election. in the house, i can't tell if the democrats are doing a little bit of tamping down expectations because they want their people

to get worried so that they will try to boost turnout or if it's just demoralizing. you have this build up. you have tom perez, the dnc had, sing i don't like it was going to be that good anyway. i don't think it's going to be a blue wave. to that -- does that demoralize them further? >> jesse: how can democrats be demoralized further? >> greg: the blue wave is officially a blue trickle. i think they need a giant box of depends. they are leaking everywhere. he not the democrat is like, the guy who shows up at the bar who wears too much aftershave and has his shirt open and is trying really hard for these guilty of overreach. everything the dems have done is overreach. kavanaugh, stormy daniels, overreach. they caravan, overreach. they try so hard and it blows up with their faces because nobody takes them seriously. they have no results. they just have anger and emotion.

>> jesse: all right, juan. tone down the aftershave. you are scaring everybody off. when you think about this coming from the head of the dnc? >> juan: i think it is smart. what you want to save the democratic base, they have a high level of of enthusiasm, don't take anything for granted. don't get complacent. get out there and vote. you were talking about trump's numbers now exceeding president obama back in 2010. remember, obama lost 63 seats. [laughter] >> jesse: not a good year. >> juan: a lot of people were cheering you and i want them to know the truth. the second thing is, high-level high-level -- >> jesse: behind us. >> juan: high levels of enthusiasm for this midterm rac race. a lot of it i think is generated by the fact that people think there's a lot at stake and there certainly is. i agree with tom perez. the map for the senate, very difficult. i think for the house come you

look at the numbers, things look pretty good for the democrats. they need their voters to turn out and in a state like texas, who thought that a democrat could challenge ted cruz? that is the story. [booing] >> lawrence: i think the democrats overplayed their hands. they never quite got a message. everything was what they were against. you could never determine what their why was and right now they're getting republicans to the polls. the biggest advantage they had was republicans were complacent. they got the tax cut they wanted. they may be angry at congress for for not getting health care but they were going to stay at home. with the kavanaugh stuff and the mob mentality, now republicans are fired up and they will be going to the polls. >> jesse: juan mentioned beto o'rourke and i think the president had some words for the

democratic senate candidate here. >> president trump: i think beto o'rourke is highly overrated. when i heard about them, i figured he must be something a little special. he's not. i thought he got beaten badly in the debate. i think he's a highly overrated guy. >> jesse: also said something about ted cruz and it looks like there may be a nickname change. let's listen. >> president trump: he's not lying ted anymore. i call him texas ted. ted cruz and i had a very nasty, tough campaign. it was very competitive. >> jesse: overrated o'rourke and beautiful ted. >> dana: he was trying something out there and he said texas ted. he wants the alliteration. i don't think i would've gone with overrated or work. i would've gone with beto. it's an interesting topic. >> greg: beto male or just

>> juan: welcome back to "the five" live in dallas, texas. a caravan of central american migrants is reportedly swelling to about 7,000 people as it pushes north toward the u.s. border. in response, president trump is threatening to cut off foreign aid to guatemala, honduras, and el salvador if they don't stop this massive group. trump is also clashing with the media over who is in the caravan and who is to blame. >> president trump: you know what you should do, go into the middle of the caravan, take your cameras and search. okay. search. no, no, take your camera, go into the middle and search. you're going to fight ms-13. you are going to find middle eastern's. you're going to find everything. guess what, with not allowing them in our country.

what's happening at the border is caused by the democrats because they won't let anybody change immigration laws that are horrible. >> juan: lawrence, criminal, ms-13, caused by the democrats? what's going on? >> lawrence: the democrats believe in open borders. i don't understand how you all can be competitive in border states such as texas, advocating for illegals to come across. >> juan: i don't think anybody -- >> lawrence: quite frankly, we don't know who is in the crowd coming across the border but that's just the fact. the american people don't want people coming across the border without vetting. that's the problem. >> juan: okay, jesse, do you agree? do you think that the president is demonizing these people seeking asylum? >> jesse: the president is telling the press to do its job and report the facts. we are a melting pot but we are also a nation of laws. we don't like people kicking on the border and demanding citizenship. we wanted done the right, proper way. there's a lot of fake news about the caravan too.

they are making it out to be a bunch of mothers with young children but if you look at the video, your eyes aren't going to live. there is teenage kids. there is 20-year-old man, and they brutally broke through the border into mexico, roughed up some border police on the mexican side. they are wearing t-shirts that are calling our president the devil, and a lot of people in america are looking at these visual saying this looks like a hostile crew. we are not necessarily going to welcome you with open arms if you're going to behave that way. once they get a little north, they pay the drug cartels $5,000 for a family unit, so now the drug cartels are basically acting like tollbooth operators for america. so if the democrats want open borders, they are on the same side as the drug cartels. mexico has to step up and stop this. america would never let other citizens flow through our country in a caravan that way mexico is doing. >> juan: president obrador

says people are leaving for necessity, economic opportunity. the democrats are saying president trump is demonizing those people seeking asylum. what do you say? >> dana: this entire bus owed, if democrats think the caravan is helping their cause, they are wrong. if you are more illegal immigration, this is not helping. you take someone like me, very synthetic to refugees. this to me does not look like refugees. you have able-bodied young men. i understand that the economic conditions are not good but to stay and fight. we don't have to be responsible for that. i would take a lot more refugees, actual refugees. i think that's an important thing than america does for the world. i think they are a leader on that. but this is not -- take somebody like me who is pretty moderate on immigration from that standpoint and you have me feeling this way about this caravan, then you've got a real

problem. it's not helping. >> lawrence: they will fight the border control but they won't fight for their own country. if anybody has done research on human trafficking, a lot of these kids, their parents send them across the border as sex slaves but they want us to be compassionate when they end up behind bars. it's absurd. >> juan: greg, and a lot of thought from the president saying he's going to cut foreign aid but if you do that, don't you worse than the conditions that make you more likely people will seek asylum? >> greg: i don't think so. i think this is the worst possible visual the democrats have right now, unless bernie sanders came out wearing a thong. other than that, this crystallizes the lack of proces process. the process is a system, due process. that's what we want. what this is a saying we don't care. we just have a goal. we want these people to come. if they believe in the system of

our government, why are they violating it so brazenly while holding onto their flag and talking about how great their country is as they are storming our border? our borders or work to find a country. it's crazy. to the point about trump demonizing other people, who was then demonized the most? every time you try to come out for some kind of process, they call you heartless or racist. maxine waters told people to go after republicans and conservatives, and that is essentially demonization. the demonization thing goes both ways. >> juan: 's into the process that people come to the border and apply? >> greg: not that way. that's not a process. >> juan: they have a right to apply. >> dana: at the port of entry. >> juan: a new study reports who is the most politically biased on college campuses. the answer ahead on "the five" live from dallas.

>> dana: maybe smu is the exception? >> greg: the message i'm trying to get to the college kids is that it's a waste of time. dropout right now. everything will be great. >> dana: how about don't listen to greg yet but be aware. you should know, the cost. what is the benefit, what's the value you are getting? what are you paying for. and hold those administrators to task. >> greg: to be fair, smu is a great school. jesse, these kids are going to be paying for four years of nothing for the rest of their lives. >> jesse: on the farm -- if i'm a father paying 60 grand for my kid to get brainwashed, i would rather have them watch cnr free. remember the crazy left-wing professor in colorado, he said people on 9/11 deserved to die, and it took that university like ten years to boot him out because he had tenure.

i was just at cornell asking why is cornell so liberally biased, and they kicked me out. it's totally backwards. it is snowflake city. they need safe spaces to do anything anymore. if we ever fight a real war, who's going to fight it, not these guys. they beat these guys. >> greg: juan, you have to admit 12-1 is groupthink. >> juan: i think what we need for affirmative action is -- underachievers. i disagree with you because i think parents and students are paying for high-level education. they believe in education. they believe in the benefits of it, and if you go to the books, go to the numbers. college graduates make more. >> dana: over their lives. >> greg: yeah, but it's not worth it. >> dana: they are going to be late buying a home at a second car that they will also have all the debt that the baby boomers and generation x is putting on

because they are here. go ahead. >> hi. i'm a political science major and senior here at smu and my question is has o'rourke appropriately adjusted his strategy and rhetoric for texas? does he need to? >> dana: greg coming want to take that. >> greg: i heard that he got a rifle rack for his prius. they have that saying he is all hacked, no cattle. he is like no cattle, all manur manure. >> jesse: didn't he come out for her kneeling over the national anthem? that's not going to go in texas. >> juan: he's run a high-class campaign in terms of lack of name-calling until the debate which is when i would say he's picked up on your -- he picked up on the line.

i think it's good because hope and high-class as opposed to fear and anger. >> dana: we have to keep going going. miles, go ahead. >> hi, i'm miles, a sophomore, a democrat who is voluntarily given content of this network. >> dana: we appreciate it. what's your question? >> juan: i know how you feel. >> jesse: miles isn't getting paid, juan. >> my question is, do you believe the polls accurately represent the race, since many young people who are considered "unlikely voters" are fired up about o'rourke? >> dana: good question. lawrence. >> lawrence: when i came back to texas, there's a lot of beto signs. i think ted cruz got couple at first. he was running for president ever since he got to the senate. once he came back and started telling people what he was for and why they elected them, i think the energy went back to ted cruz.

i don't think juan ran a campaign -- i don't think beto ran a campaign -- cruz is running a campaign for texas. >> dana: everyone is going to be studying this race because it will have an impact in 2020 for sure. grayson, were going to go to you next. >> thank you. i met political science and prelaw student and vice president of college democrats. this is in reference to the previous question. considering that as we've seen in the last few years, polls don't always perfectly rep in the know people are going to vote. what factors do you think pollsters are looking out for us to mark >> juan: one of the difficulties, you've got to look at registered voters and then likely people among registered voters and that's thy in a contest like the one here in texas where here we are on the campus of smu and most

midterms, young people do not turn out. minorities do not turn out to vote in high numbers. the question is, are they wrong this time because of the high level of engagement with these men terms, and one final factor, cell phones. you don't have a landline. if the pollsters are checking, do they miss you? >> dana: we are going to go to -- >> greg: try to make it a fun question. >> dana: next to john. >> i'm from fairfield, connecticut, and i'm the president of college republican republicans. >> [cheering] >> i was wondering, what types of stories seem to have the greatest and least effect on the public? >> greg: anything that has visual appeal will win. that's why i think the caravan thing has been so damaging. any time that you see the overreach, like you did, kavanaugh could have came and went but when they went full

avenatti, or as i like to call him spaghetti avenatti. he was supposed to have a rally today. he canceled it because he couldn't afford the cab fare. anyway, i don't have an answer. >> dana: jessica mellott about stories? how do you make a story choice? >> jesse: you have to go visual. it has to blow you away. that's why the russia story is a joke. nobody can see it. really can't taste it. you can't hear it. it doesn't mean anything to anybody. it's just in the sky. that's why it's not getting any play. i agree with greg, the caravan is hot right now because it burns your eyes. >> juan: imagine that. the russia story is just gone away. >> greg: it's fake news. >> dana: pay attention to when people tell the pollsters their number one issue is health care. republicans have been late to defend themselves on that. let's go to the next one.

>> dana: indeed. go ahead, last questions. >> thanks. i'm from augusta, georgia, journalism and political science student. i want to hear your take on if you think it's a good thing athletes have a larger platform speak about politics or if they should stick to sports. >> jesse: i'm not going to tell anybody bigger than i am want to do because they could knock my head off. they do what they want. >> juan: if you have to be straight with the fox audience and tell them you are an athlete and you're a great runner. i think it's celebrity world. if we have a celebrity president, why shouldn't celebrity athletes also have their say. >> lawrence: i am for your free-speech period. you want to talk about politics, i don't care. it doesn't mean i'm going to take their opinion into account because they are professional athletes but i like them expressing paid >> greg: i think everyone should shot up but me. >> dana: thanks, students are.

>> lawrence: it started on college campuses. people got away with everything. >> jesse: jobs, not mobs, juan. >> juan: how about critical thinking, smart people? holding politicians to account. we can't put that on a bumper sticker. >> jesse: too many words. >> greg: you know what it is? campus is like a seeping star and everything goes into pop culture and it ends up at the w. it's toxic ideas. it has to be stopped. >> lawrence: there is hope. i campus reform, over 90 reporters, they are all college students. they report on liberal bias every single day. >> dana: thank you for bringing us this delicious food. i'm not going to eat it. i'm just going to smell the calories. smells really good. you gain weight just smelling it. thank you, lawrence. >> lawrence: we've got to go.

>> one of my favorite things to do is eat sweets. my godmother has a big gray hair and her favorite dish that everyone goes crazy about is the sweet potato thing. >> what's the name of the bakery? >> absolutely edible. >> do you think having the word edible and it is necessary? >> yes. it's a sweet potato thing, people fight each other over this over thanksgiving. i want to see your reaction when you have one bite, i promise you won't regret it. >> this is really good. >> i'm so full. >> even if you don't live in dallas, you can go to absolutely edible and she will ship you one. >> lawrence, right?
