at the nation's doorstep there in southern california includes 600 known criminals. jillian: griff jenkins is live on the ground in he tijuana with alarming new details. griff. >> reporter: good morning. let me show you, we're outside of the sports complex here in tijuana. it's the biggest sort of shelter for the migrants. it's just after 2:00 a.m. here, so many are sleeping. you're just outside the gates here and let me take you this way i and orient you. to minority in the distance you'll see that is part of the u.s./mexico border wall. over here to my left is the stadium where upwards of they tell he me here 7,000 are camped inside there. we can't go in there right now. it was the big news that came from kirstjen nielsen yesterday that said she believes there's roughly 8500 caravan migrants along this border here and also in mexicali and 90% are not

eligible for asylum. that's why we understand they are here. the number of 600 with a criminal history is perhaps the most startling. we learned a little bit about sunday's violence along the border here. we learned that at least four border patrol agents were injured in the process and that is why president trump of last night in mississippi had a message for these migrants. take a listen. >> we're sending a clear message to the caravans and to the trespassers, turn around, go back home. and they want protection because their country is such a bad place but they're waving the flags of their countrs as they're -- country as they're walking up. somehow that doesn't work, right? doesn't work. >> reporter: one other piece of news on this side of the mexican border, mexican officials sending a letter to u.s. officials asking for an investigation of sorts to get some more answers on why tear gas was used on sunday. when the sun comes up we'll get

a little better look. right now, it's a fluid situation and so far everyone i have talked to has been males. back to you. rob: back at the caravan with griff. thank you so much. jillian: the trump administration standing behind the use of tear gas at the border entry over the weekend. rob: senior political analyst brit houme wants to know where the left's outrage was when the obama administration pretty much did the exact same thing back in 2013. >> this very kind of thing the president said he was concerned about indeed happened and it's not the first time. five years ago on thanksgiving weekend at that border point there, there were a bunch of migrants that broke loose and rushed the border and they were subdued with tear gas and other nonviolent me nodes tha methodse used. there were no howls of outrage.

international community must condemn and will never accept. rob: this is a big story, a lot russia claims that it opened fire on these vessels after they crossed into russian waters illegally. ukraine says it's international waters, anybody can go there. the military troops in ukraine are now on alert. mike pompeo is calling on russia to return those ships. jillian: an american hero killed in action is home. the remains of army ranger returned to the u.s. overnight. he lost his life during a gunfight with al-qaida, the tenth american service member killed in afghanistan this year and the second this month. friends described him as a hard hard-working man who was determined to join the army since he was a child. rob: let's torn the weather now -- let's turn to the weather now.

a major winter storm crippled travel across the country as millions of people tried to get home for the holiday weekend. more than 4700 flights canceled or delayed from the snow that blasted parts of the midwest. jillian: in the northeast, torrential rain caused major flooding in downtown philadelphia. janice dean is live tracking the storm. i was in philly yesterday. jillian: did you take that video? >> i did not. that weather was insane. jillian: , yeah a lot of rain in a short period of time in new york as well. >> the system is almost done. behind it we have cold air and snow in the forecast for parts of the great lakes. the storm is lingering for new england, interior northeast could get a little more snow out of this. there's the past 24 hours, just kind of slow-moving. so we are going to see the potential heavy snow, certainly rain along the coast and gusty winds for the next 12 to 24 hours as it finally makes its way northward. there's the additional precipitation, certainly 6 to 1y across the great lakes, towards

midterms. rob: another race to watch, the run for house speaker. today nancy pelosi is meeting with democrats who are threatening to hold their support for her speakership. they are demanding she makes it easier for bipartisan bills to reach the floor. this is a look at washington where the meetings will take place. tomorrow democrats will vote to nominate the next leader of congress. t senate democrats putting up resistance to one of president trump's appointees. chuck schumer making his feeling about thomas farr crystal clear. >> i've been in the senate long enough to see a whole bunch of questionable nominees, frankly from both parties. but thomas farr is unquestionably one of the worst. rob: democrats have accused the judicial nominee for north carolina's eastern district of being hostile to unions and to voter rights. he's expected to get a vote sometime this week.

jillian: former trump campaign advisor george papadopoulos is waking up behind bars this morning. morning. he is serving 14 days in a wisconsin prison after pleading guilty to lying to the fbi in the russia probe. his wife slammed special counsel robert mueller on tucker carlson tonight. >> i feel this decision very unfair and i'm not talking about the decision of the judge but all the increa process fabricaty mueller. he never betrayed anyone. he didn't deliver the information that mueller was probably trying to extort from him. jillian: papadopoulos lied to the fbi about contact with russia while working for the trump campaign. after prison he'll spend a year on probation. meanwhile, special counsel robert mueller is accusing paul manafort of lying to investigators since his plea deal which is a violation of the agreement. agreement. rob: a federal judge expected to hear arguments today about

retired immigration and naturalization service senior special agent, michael cutler. thank you for being here this morning. >> thank you for having me. jillian: can you explain how what was done over the weekend was different from what happened in 2013? >> in my judgment, material lit was the same. you have an out-of-control situation. you have border patrol agents that are sworn to secure our borders against unlawful entry. all that was done was a measure trto try to regain control of a violent situation. they were pelted brin by rocks d bottles. jillian: they had a couple options. >> the options was either retreat which would have been a disaster, or deadly force or less than lethal force. they opted for less than lethal force. if you look at the purpose of our immigration laws at our borders, it's first and foremost to protect national security and publipubpublic safety. the 9/11 commission report made

it crystal year that border security is national security. if you're running the border, you're evading the vetting process. rob: when the washington post wrote an article on this, they didn't mention really the border rush and the rock throwing. they just basically said we were lobbing tear gas at people that were waiting to seek asylum in the country. they clarified later the details of the rock throwing and the rush to get in and them trying to push their way through. they also did make a big stink about the usage of tear gas in this incident. and it begs the question, and i don't know this, but they say that tear gas is a very, very brutal way of trying to get this crowd to push away. >> i don't think it's a brutal way of doing it. what were your options? you're dealing with thousands of stampeding people. under those circumstances, you have to wonder -- ba by the wayi wonder, why were women and

children at the head of the line. you usually see that in the middle east. if they get injured they have the graphic image for the 6:00 news. they're working with smugglers to bring people into the united states along with drugs. it's not related to hezbollah. we have el chapo guzman on trial for bringing drugs across the border. i don't know why we have enough i.c.e. agents, so when agents arrest people and they have to release them r, there's no one to play the game of hide and seek. they hide, nobody seeks. the expectation is that once you're in the united states, you're home free and you have sanctuary cities further enticing aliens to do what we're seeing. jillian: you mentioned the women and children. you see the images. we've seen the pictures all over the place in the last couple days. griff jenkins just this morning reporting from tijuana said i'm going to be honest with you

guys, i'm seeing mostly men. we're getting conflicting reports. to our knowledge, at least four border patrol agents have been injured in this situation. do you have a hard time with the people who don't understand that we need to protect the border, we need to protect our agents? >> it's infewe infuriating. you have governor cuomo referring to the i.c.e. agents as thugs. i've been involved in the investigation and arrest of several terrorists during my 30 year career with the ins. the idea of leaving america vulnerable to criminals and terrorists blows my mind. but you know what's funny, chuck schumer is the same guy who in 2014 wanted to create a law that made trespassing on infrastructure and landmarks a felony. the same chuck schumer is saying if you trespass on america, now you're entitled to the highest honor we can bestow upon a foreign national. rob: the narrative has changed

the wall since 2017. rob: hillary clinton under fire for suggesting that european leaders should close their doors to migrants to slow the spread of right wing populism. liz pete is challenging clinton, asking if opening borders in europe to asylum seekers in europe is bad, how could it be the right thing to do in the u.s. slow the spread of right wing populism is political speak for i guess people don't want open borders. this isn't about changing politics over there. it's doing what people want. >> what we have seen in europe is that the unfettered migration from syria and other countries in asia and africa have caused absolute tumult in local politics. we have angela merkel who has been in control basically of germany for decades, now having to step down at the end of next year.

we had the brexit vote which was very largely colored by immigration concerns. poland and hungary now have right wing populist leaders. hilin germany, they opened their doors to a million migrants. it caused rest. unrest. it was not popular. rob: merkel being in charge of germany, has tremendous power within all of europe, and i think it's clear that you could say that she's been pushing an agenda that most people don't want because she thinks it's right. there's no faster way to get yourself out of power. >> that's exactly right. since she did that, and with crime on the uptick in germany and terror attacks like the berlin christmas market attack and so forth, she's had to scramble backwards and put up more severe deportation laws,

details emerge, it's obvious the plans don't help the people that are the most needy amongst us. this is the greatest indication of how democrats abandoned the middle class, which is the fixation on college as only way to accomplish the american dream. there are needs for workers across the economic spectrum. sad link the next generation of americans with enormous debt for a fewer year degree they may or may not be able to use is not the american dream that most americans know and love. jillian: do you think the message is gone or do you think that perhaps during the midterms they were so focused on something that is important to a lot of people, like health care? >> i think we'll see. the problem with democrats is that they have a lot of rhetoric that is really appealing to junk people. young people don't necessarily vote. when it comes to getting elected, democrats tend to focus on themes that they think are more salient with the voting population. so it really depends moving forward if democrats are able to mobilize young people in a way

that is meaningful in elections. so far they haven't been able to demonstrate that. free college may fall by the wayside if that continues to be a problem for democrats in elections. jillian: let's talk about bernie sanders right now because his new book is hitting shelves and it's called where we go from here, two years in the resistance. what do you think about this resistance platform in 2020? is that going to work? >> the resistance platform isn't much of a platform, right? democrats have tried to make a lot out of being the anti-trump versus giving americans a positive vision for the future. bernie's new book today, he's launching it with a speech in wash towashington, d.c. union people generally like his -- young people generally like his message. bernie's got a couple disadvantages. he's an actual u.s. senator. he has to take hard votes and he has to govern. that is going to run up against the rhetoric of being a progressive leader when it time

to run for when 2010. he -- for 2020. he has a lot of competition for the position as the democratic nominee for president. he's going to have to show the american people what it means to actually provide a vision for the country moving forward. i don't think being the anti-trump is appealing enough that it can create enough ground swell to get him elected president. jillian: on that potential of running in 2020, person see says if it turns out i'm the best candidate to beat donald trump, then i will probably run. i mean, we're talking about beto o'rourke, you know, who knows how many other names will be thrown into the ring. joe biden is popular with a lot of people. what do you think about bernie? >> i think bernie really will have an uphill battle here. a couple reasons i mentioned, being a u.s. senator means you have to vote. you can't jus just run for president. beto o'rourke doesn't have to be in washington having hard conversations and making hard votes.
