was a chilly morning on january 5, 1970 when ted kennedy returned to edgartown massachusetts. over the next few days 26 witnesses, each with their own version of the event that took place the previous july, but as a result of some on orthodox legal maneuvering, senator kennedy was the first witness called. >> they let the lead safeco first. the press can't broadcast what they see but every single witness who's going to follow him afterward to see what he said. >> hungry press corps gathered outside he answered 86 questions about the like that mary jo died. over the next four days there were shuffled in and out including the chief of police, the diver. >> i testified as to what i did.
