>> thank you very much. merry christmas. >> merry christmas. merry christmas to everybody an our great staff here at fox and friends. have a great day. >> good morning and welcome to this christmas day edition of "america's newsroom". president trump is finishing up a members of armed forces from the white house. the video conference call in which he think the troops for their service. we are going to bring you the full almost ten minutes of that conversation with troops stationed around the world in just a moment. >> very talented. >> they are raising interest rates to too fast is my opinion.
7:01 am
the reasoning too fast because they think that the economy is so good. i think that they will get it pretty soon. the fact is that the economy is doing so well that they raised interest rates and that's a goo form of safety and away. president obama didn't do much of that. we have a normalized interest rate which means it's good for lot of people. they have money in the bank. for many years and what he got interest on their money. i have great confidence and our companies. our companies are the greatest in the world and they're doing really well. they have record kinds of numbers. i think it's a tremendous opportunity i can tell you when the government going to be open. i can tell you it's not going t be open until we have a wall,
7:02 am
fence, i will call it whatever they want to call it. it's the same thing. it's a barrier of people pourin into our country. it's a barrier from drugs. there's a problem in this world today called human trafficking. human trafficking is one of the hard to believe problems. were not going to let that people are working so hard to catch these traffickers they ar bad people. we can't do it without a barrier . you have drugs, human trafficking. you have illegal people coming into our country. in the caravan, 618 people were very bad in some cases, criminals. one man said he was wanted for murder. i don't want them in the country . all i want to do is have a
7:03 am
physical barrier meaning a wall. if you don't have that, them were just not opening. yesterday i gave up 150 miles worth of law in texas. it's going to be built, hopefully rapidly at the end of january for the start of construction. we were talking about 500-550 miles. it is a 2,000-mile border, but much of it has been region we can't get across. were looking between 50550. we've gave we gave out 150 yesterday. we're going to have a great while there. we have other sections to give out. one other thing people don't understand or know what they might as well, we have renovate massive amounts of wall. wall that was good, but was in good shape. you don't have to replace it, but you have to renovate. we renovated a massive amount o
7:04 am
wall. in addition to that, and i thin very importantly, we built a lo of new wall. the new piece, the new section is very exciting what's going o there. it's probably the biggest section. so while were over funding, wer also over building, and it's my hope to have this done complete all 500-550 miles to have it either renovated or brand-new b election time. >> it is complicated. were getting 25 million.
7:05 am
that's already approved. that's for everything. that's for homeland security. we have a lot of drones, lots o everything. plus we have some wall money. we want the wall money to be increased because we want to finish it. but people have to understand i it's been strongly started, a lot of areas if you look at san diego, it's now almost complete. interestingly it's, california which has been difficult to dea with because of the governor. but the people of san diego cam and they wanted the well-built. i was going to build that last, but i determine that they reall wanted it built. the wall is beautiful. the job they've done is fantastic. san diego is largely built, it will be completed very shortly. they came to us, the people and they were asking for border
7:06 am
protection. people were walking through mexico right into san diego. right over people's front lawns. by the hundreds and by the thousands and they came to us and they ask for a while, the only thing that's going to stop that, the drone is an going to stop it. high-technology high technology isn't going to stop it. the only thing that stops it is when the in israel they had a big problem they put up a big wall. 99.99 percent of the people wer stopped from coming in. we have a long border, but wil have the exact same thing. it may be the case of the olympic champion can get over the wall, but for the most part in not able to do it. much of it is 30 feet high. some of it lower. it is like a three-story
7:07 am
building. were making great progress on renovations. or making great progress on building the wall and, most exciting me. we gave out the largest section yesterday and that work is starting next week. we will have it completed fairl quickly. i think they understand what's happening. they want border security. the people in this country want border security. it's not a question of hay, i'd rather not be doing shutdowns. i wasn't able to be with my family i thought it would be wrong for me to be with my family in florida and i just di want to go down and be there when other people are hurting. it's going to all work out. many of those people who've sai to me they have communicated stay out until you get the funding for the wall.
7:08 am
these federal workers want the walbergh the only one that doesn't want the wall as the democrats because they don't mind open borders. open borders mean massive amounts of crime. the democrats don't want it because they don't want open borders. and yet every one of those democrats approve the wall or offense are very substantial barriers. every single one. i don't think there's one that lets use the word almost everyone approved the wall or offense or exactly what were talking about. and that was three years ago. over the years, everyone of the and only time they went against it, the only time they went against it only one time when donald trump said we want to build the wall. as soon as i said we wanted to build the wall they were all against it. take another example. take comey. everybody hated comey and thought he did a horrible job.
7:09 am
the democrats hated him. they were going for his resignation, they were going fo his firing including nancy pelosi until i fired him. once i fired him, everybody sai oh, why did you fire him, why did you fire him? look at some of these people. this is what were doing now. take a look at some of these people. the day before i was fiery i fired him everything he should be fired. as soon as i fired him, it was terrible thing to do. it's a disgrace with happening in our country. other than that, i wish everybody a very merry christmas . thank you very much. thank you. take a plea were making progres on the funding. it's probably a presidential harassment and were not having
7:10 am
that. no collusion. after two years, no collusion. there has been collusion, but it's been by the democrats. you're talking about millions and millions and millions of dollars of wasted money. there's been absolutely no collusion. there has been a lot of collusion by the democrats with russia and a lot of other peopl that maybe they shouldn't have been dealing with including ver dishonest people. thank you very much, everybody. >> president trump working at the white house on this christmas day. good morning everyone,. >> merry christmas, everyone. >> that was a tape playback fro the press pool. we were told that he think the troops for his service in the lengthy phone call which he did which is about 20 minutes of time prior to what we just saw which was the ten minutes after that phone call when he covered a lot of ground there. >> he did. he spoke to troops all over the
7:11 am
world, all branches of the military then went into this conversation about a lot of things. he started out talking about interest rates rising too fast, but he thinks they're going to fix it. he went on to say he had great confidence in our companies he, barrier, so again, changing the words there. >> he talked about the government shutdown. talked about the comey situatio and the molar investigation. a lot to unpack and were going to do that for a of hours. >> lets go over to the white house with allison. , the president seems a little lonely over there. he's there all by himself, but he certainly has a lot to say o christmas. what more can you tell a spread. >> he has a lot to talk about i terms of the government shutdown . the thing so many of us are watching so closely to see if and when it could potentially end. he says he cannot tell us when the government is going to be open but that it will not be
7:12 am
open until we have some sort of barrier, a physical fence wall down at the border. he says he talked about there i already wall there, but they want the money to renovate it t build more, and eventually have between 50550 miles of a border wall. as far is negotiations between democrats and republicans, you can see right here this is president trump yesterday on christmas eve. the president and first lady made calls to children on christmas eve and asked if ther was any progress on the shutdow yesterday during these phone calls the president said nothin new and then added we need border security and of course more of what we heard today. we know the white house gave democratic senator chuck schume a counter offer reportedly around $2.5 million for border security, new fencing and then some sort of/fun for immigratio priorities for democrats is tha they feel like they are hearing so many different things from different people at the white house about what the president
7:13 am
will will not accept. they say it's difficult to know where the white house stands at this point. we've heard the white house tal about the $5 billion #be needed that. the big sticking point for the white house has been and remain to be wanting some sort of physical barrier at the u.s. mexico border. >> never a dull day at the whit house. thank you so much. >> qubit. >> the markets are closed for the holiday after the dhows worst christmas you drop ever which followed the presidents latest tweet storm attacking th federal reserve and questionabl moves by his treasury secretary. more on all of this commentary writer for the washington examiner merry christmas. >> merry christmas and thank yo for having me. >> we want to get to all of these things that the president just touched on moments ago. real quick, on that market slide . treasury secretary had some trouble today? >> so, obviously him coming out

with a press release saying tha he was trying to ensure that banks have enough liquidity was probably not the best call and sort of giving someone a warnin that they didn't even ask for, but ultimately, these markets lights are not his fault. it's a number of reasons stemming from leveraged loan bubbles to the trade word to monetary policy that's been to for too long. >> the president says they've raised interest rates too fast, but it's a tremendous opportunity to buy. maybe we will see some green in the week ahead. he's made they wall huge part o this battle with the budget, an he wants that ball field, the wall, the barrier, the fence, he's got some negotiating to do. >> is he does. specifically because democrats are just going to ride this out until they take back the house and they can effectively shut this whole thing down. i think trump would be wise to consider going back to that dea that we were discussing almost
7:15 am
year ago exchanging border security and exchange for some level of amnesty for daca recipients. i think right now on the table making changes to legal immigration isn't really going to be that effective. if trumps number one priority i to fill this key campaign promise of a barrier on the southern border, he will have t bring democrats to the table an make a deal. >> how optimistic should we be. and what is the sense of how long this negotiation might >> i wouldn't hold my breath on this simply because democrats have made it pretty clear that they are not willing to concede. trumps comment earlier in his meeting with nancy pelosi and chuck schumer did not help them because now democrats can blame trump for the shutdown. however i think in this white house, anything is a possibility . i wouldn't be surprised both something actually did come through if he's willing to brin democrats to the table and make a deal burke a lot of pressure

merry christmas to both of you and thank you for joining us today. >> merry christmas. >> okay, some things to discuss here, some strong language from nancy pelosi and chuck schumer plunging the country into chaos. is that a fair statement and kelly jane, let's start with you . >> there is definitely some volatility going on, and need a i will say that. i thought it was striking that president trump almost echoed that statement and earlier toda when he said in a we talked about everything going on and said it's a disaster, but other than that, merry christmas. even the president recognizes this is a time of volatility that, but i think donald trump sometimes is his own worst enem and this may be one of those cases. the stock market has been going down. of course when it was going up president trump was happy to take credit solely for that whe i goes down, he is a little les likely to take that credit.
7:25 am
it was going down, but it was really i think one of the reasons it had that huge drop yesterday on christmas eve was donald trump tweets about the fed and there have been rumors going on for a few days now tha he is thinking of entering to see if he can fire fed chair derome pawel. i think that was one of the things that led to that drop yesterday. donald trump complains about what powell is doing to make stocks drop, but he can also to cause stocks to drop. >> robin, let me bring you in here. does it help when nancy pelosi talks about plunging the countr into chaos is that helpful language? >> honestly, and need up. i don't see that as being helpful. it's not dishonest, it's just not helping to move things forward. and that's what americans reall want to see right now. they want these jokers to get t work and get this done. it doesn't matter who is to blame.

his wall. basically saying he will take credit for the shutdown. i think since then some of his advisers have told him that shutdowns aren't popular amongs the public. just last week the white house was willing to support a spending deal that only until the beginning of mid february, but that did not include a border wall funding. in fact, it was when some of th people who voted for donald trump because he said it at almost campaign stop that he wa going to build a wall and peopl said this was incredibly disappointing. only then did he change his min and say i'm not going to sign a spending bill without the borde wall funding. democrats are not willing to compromise because last week he was going to sign up bill without the wall. >> the president has foregone his vacation. he is back in washington stayin there, hunkering down trying to get some kind of a deal going. what do you see happening when

in washington and not the american people. they just want the government reopened and they want a deal worked out sooner than later. >> who is the adult in the room? someone has to step forward and move some sort of a compromise forward. >> that the only way it's going to get done and i don't know right now there's anybody who's going to compromise that's acceptable to both sides. really with donald trump, he made his number one commitment while he is running for office to build the wall. i don't think he's in a situation where you get himself out of that. you also have what's going on between congress and the white house. several presidents now in a row have expanded the regulatory state without bringing congress into the realm there. and in elementary school congress is supposed to pass th laws at all they been passing lately is the buck. from that, to be able to bring that together.
8:47 am
if it's going to be a deal to b made, it's got to come from congress. i think they've got a couple more, but i don't see the president compromise on the wal at this point. >> democrats used to be in favo of some sort of a wall they use to be in favor of border security, but now it seems like things have really changed. let me ask you, what is wrong with border security, why is that all of a sudden become taboo with democrats? >> i don't think it has. i think the president outlined in his campaign that there woul be a wall, that is basically a little bit so to speak. they cannot negotiate out of that deal. have historically democrats hav voted in favor of some of the border security. if you draw a line in the sand
8:48 am
and say it lets you get five blame not going to open up the government, i think we all have a problem. i agree with chris about the fact that there's been a a remarkable abdication of responsibility and congress of the last decade. they fundamentally haven't passed a budget. they've been operating on continuing resolutions which really emboldened and empowers the executive branch in many respects dictate how the budget will be. i think this is the point for congress to really step up and re- exert their constitutional responsibility. i think the fact that they sent it back to washington, dc and have a. >> how about that. president obama hands up at executive orders. so, when does congress say we have a job to do too? >> it looks like this kind of what they're doing there. for them not to pass, not to agree to move forward on the stopgap measures this time is how congress is supposed to work
8:49 am
. i believe pushes us back to the point where congress and the executive branch article one an article two are the way the founding fathers originally intended. he should veto it. hopefully that does bring them together. someone can emerge. border security and the wall, you're right, democrats supported the wall with president obama in 2012. this is become more of a campaign issue. i think that's the unfortunate aspect of this. if there was a deal to be made on baca, i can tell you i was involved in a lot of those negotiations. >> we are going to have to interrupt and ended there. were out of time. thanks so much,

well, coal plants are gas drilling for it what is new her is the strategy were other than fight every oil well in west texas the movement targets this trip once, the pipelines and export terminals and the production has nowhere to go it stops effectively keeping oil, gas, and call in coal in the ground. >> the goal is to keep it in th ground movement is to keep just that, keep fossil fuels in the ground so that we don't burn so much that we exceed the amount of that's going to lead us to a climate catastrophe. >> a lot lot of environmental issues to see and the wind and solar. now, many environmentalists tha global warming threat is too fa gone, too urgent, and you have to stop any new fossil fuel. how is this keep it in the ground strategy working out so far? >> good and bad. gasoline is very cheap right now
