troops and praising their efforts in the fight against isis. >> the other reason i'm here today is to personally thank you and every service member throughout the region for the near elimination of the isis territorial caliphate in iraq and in syria. i looked at a map and two years ago, it was a lot of red all over the map. now you have a couple little spots and that's happening very quickly. >> dana: the president adding that he has no plans to pull troops out of iraq and says no country can be used as a staging area to strike islamic state. this comes after president trump announced he's withdrawing troops out of syria, depending the move saying "a lot of people are going to come around to my way of thinking." we shall see if that happens. it's kind of fun for the troops, right? very moving experience to see the commander in chief. >> they looked like they appreciated it. in your experience in the bush administration, how far in

advance to they have to plan these things? >> dana: a lot. >> tom: it was in the works for a while. >> dana: one of the hardest things i ever did was try to figure out how to plan a whole trip. you can't have your deputies help you. there was only two people in my shop that knew anything about it, but you have to go and meet with all the reporters and the photographers get it organized. they can really keep a secret. this trip was able to happen. of course it takes some planning. katie, this is a different region than before. obviously a lot safer in iraq than it was in years past, a lot of because of the great work the men and women in uniform have done there. >> katie: to the point about it being planned, i wonder if president trump wasn't actually going to go to florida and this was the plan all along, for him to visit the troops. >> dana: one of the reports as they would have left from florida for shutdown had not happen. >> katie: to your question about iraq and the situation

there, that the most important thing he said was striking isis from iraq. he said we are not going to be taking troops out of that country which i think reassure his allies in the region that look, although we are taking our troops out of syria, where allowing the israelis to bomb iran to take care of the iranian problem. saudi arabia stepping up with money. there are concerns about the way turkey is going to handle the kurds as an ally against isis in the region. him saying today we are not leaving a rock. there are 5,000 troops there. were going to strike isis if we need to from this position. it shows we are still in the fight, they are specific about their language. it's a territorial caliphate which indicates the fight is not over. taking a lot of their land back, cities taken back thanks to the united states and people in the region. however, the fight is ongoing. we saw christmas day isis attack in iraq just yesterday. one fun thing too that's joyful as the iraqi government declared for the first time officially

just before christmas a national holiday for christians there after isis tried to wipe them out in a genocide over the last couple years. lots to celebrate and i think lots of calm nerves in some ways from the president what he said today. >> dana: we should mention it's also not just a military that the president gives a lift to. it's the diplomatic corps as well. people across the government, from the state department and also ust usda that helps get agriculture back up and running. >> doug: we are all partisan. i'm sure we have views. we are all americans. as an american, i'm very proud the president for going particular at a time, as katie section correctly, there are questions but are foreign policy vis-a-vis their pullout from syria and troops from afghanistan. this is real good for america and i think on a day like today, we have to say thank you to the

president. again, i have many differences with him. but thank you for standing up for our troops. the battle against isis is not over. i'm glad he made that clear. hopefully we hit them not only territorially but wherever they are. >> dana: and the new government in iraq as they are, so they can be reassured as well that is going to be something there to help. also it's important for our national interests as well. >> lawrence: there's been a lot of questions on where the president stands aware comes to foreign policy. this was an opportunity for him to go meet with our troops because obviously they are serving while everyone else is celebrating the holidays. the president, this was a moment for him because a lot of people wanted to hear on what exactly his military strategy is. there's a conflicting view of the more libertarian point of view of having a strong military presence but also not getting involved with every single country. the thing that people are going

to run into when it comes to this we will get to it later on the show, what happens when you're already there in a nation and fighting that war and you have this war, not wanting this view of not wanting to nation build you are there and you cannot withdraw those troops and open up a vacuum like the last of administration did. i wouldn't say nation build but if where there, opening up a vacuum. >> katie: your point about the state department and other people working in iraq on behalf of america, it boosts the root morale of local iraqi leaders to know that the president of the united states as they are. listen what they have to say and get briefings on the ground from people working on these issues and talking to our military leaders as well to get some perspective. i know the president gets criticized for maybe not taking the advice of people around him, but he does go and meet with people and listen and then makes his decision.

getting that information from the ground of a very important. >> dana: nothing like a first-hand account, tom. >> tom: the reason that i was wondering about the advanced planning, wouldn't this have been an excellent time for him to analysis changes in syria? after having visited iraq. >> dana: especially if he was going to say he has no plans to withdraw troops from iraq. those troops can be staged to deal with isis. then you might not have had ten days of confusion. >> tom: i thought the overreaction, the fact that he announced it, mattis resigned, and then the talking heads were saying this is it. everything is imploding. mattis was only one we trusted. he was the only adult. i thought it was overdone but if i wanted to second-guess the president's decision, this might've been a nice time, to announce it. >> katie: there wasn't an explanation that he gave today. he didn't say when he announced it that we still have this place

in iraq. he did generally talk about allies being able to take care of these problems not on our behalf but stepping up to the plate in their own backyard and defeating isis in a way that is beneficial to their own countries. it would have been helpful at the beginning if he said look, were getting out of syria because we have plenty of resources in iraq to deal with the isis problem. were going to continue to fight isis, taking away their territory. of course that were against the terrorist group is not done because they do exist in places like europe and the united states. i think he could have avoided some of that by putting it -- >> lawrence: seemed like the president was more concerned at the time, i get what he was saying, but it seemed like he was wanting to reassure america he was trying to keep a campaign promise and serve actually telling us what was happening. >> doug: isis is not defeated. syria is a cauldron. afghanistan, where the taliban is doing better and better and

president donnie is on the ropes. it's all bad for the united states. while i abroad with the -- applied with the president said, we have huge national security challenges in the region. >> dana: doug, i want to ask you, the importance of the president, any president, to be able to use not just the bully pulpit but the entire echo chamber to their advantage. announcing something just on twitter doesn't seem to scratch that. >> doug: what i learned when i learned for -- worked for bill clinton is getting the echo chamber going, orchestrating it as you are describing as a senior press officer and then press secretary, it's hugely important. while president trump controls the narrative frequently with twitter, he doesn't have the echo chamber and the support. >> dana: he doesn't dominate it. he could have. the media, we are like a bunch of raccoons in a room full of disco balls. all over the place.

shutdown will last, mr. president? >> whatever it takes. we are going to have a wall. we are going to have safety. we need safety from our country. even from the standpoint, we have terrorists coming into the southern border. can we have drones, technology? technology is bells and whistles. you have to have a wall. you have to have protection. when you say how long is it going to take? when are they going to say we need border security? when are the democrats going to say? don't forget. the democrats all agree that you need a wall until i wanted it. >> doug: house minority leader, soon to be speaker, nancy pelosi is pushing back against the president, claiming "he's using scare tactics that are not evidence-based and it's wrong." former acting i.c.e. director thomas homan is responding to pelosi by saying she's the one who has it all wrong. >> she's 100% wrong. let me educate ms. pelosi. as far as crime, and across the

border, i.c.e. arrested 138,000 criminals last year. these are people entering the country illegally and committing crimes against the citizens. >> what kind of crime? >> homicide, weapons violations, almost 12,000 sexual assault crimes. crime does come across the border. >> doug: my take on this is it's a huge opportunity to do comprehensive immigration reform. both sides are dug in on positions i think don't make a lot of sense for the country and indeed even their political positions. wouldn't it make sense to do a wall, enhance border security, a fence, as the president talked about, in exchange for a path to citizenship for the dreamers and some right for those ten or 11 million purely legally. doesn't it make sense, dana? >> dana: i think so but i want to defer to katie who was there for that interview this morning.

we talk about comprehensive immigration reform for years. three different presidents. >> doug: it doesn't make it wrong. >> dana: i agree. >> katie: it's too big of a project to do when you have a serious crisis at the border at this point in time. border security is different than amnesty for millions of people who are either here illegally or her will brought their children over when they were children without having gone through the proper process. when the president talked about wanting a wall or barrier, he's correct when he says that where we built these things in yuma, arizona, for example, places in el paso and san diego, the traffic there has stopped. if you look at the criminal element that is bringing these children and people up through mexico and using them as human shields to get into the country, you have to take a look at the real issue of the lobbying change there. i've always said that open borders are inhumane borders. you have the report today of the

second child dying well and border patrol custody. that's not a result of border patrol. that's a result of a sick kid showing up at the border and the united states giving them care that they have not seen for 2,000 miles along the journey. which complicates things enormously when you throw in comprehensive immigration reform when the president is trying to solve a problem that is an emergency right now. >> lawrence: i agree with katie but i think you are an optimist. >> doug: i tried. >> lawrence: you are not where your party is. >> doug: i know. >> lawrence: as it relates to your party, it has become an open border party. they have gone from wanting to ban i.c.e. let me say that president tried to move on this last week and he got major blowback. i said it last week. the president, if he wants to lose his base, this was the moment he was going to lose his base because he was caving. now there president is going to the opposite direction to say i can't budge on this. i tried to go with my people on this.

i tried to get some type of reasonable approach. they are not having it. democrats, you've got to give me some wiggle room. what you want to put on the table is let's just talk about daca. it doesn't solve the problem and we went through this with ronald reagan where we gave amnesty and said you're going to get border security and it never came. the american people aren't going to go for it. >> doug: tom, , and my off-base? >> tom: where you were off-base was adding 10 or 11 million. if he wants to throw daca into a deal, i think people would go for it but they are not going to go abroad amnesty. >> doug: the deal in 2013 included the 10 or 11 million and got 68 votes in the senate. >> katie: daca is more complicated than just giving citizenship to people brought here from children from mexico or central america. the question is if their parents are still in the country illegally, do they get to stay? it's a complicated issue of family units. it's not a simple piece of legislation. there are serious questions surrounding how to get stuck. when it comes to the president

and what they've offered, incoming chief of staff mick mulvaney was on fox news sunday and he said they haven't come down from 5.7 billion. they did not say what the number was. democrats, they are hoping, welcome to some center when it comes to the funding. we are talking about maybe $3 billion here. for political reasons. >> doug: i think we are talking about fundamental political positioning. >> lawrence: they don't like the optics of the wall. >> doug: i agree. >> lawrence: we know we are not going to just get a physical wall in all aspects of the border. they have called it the border wall system. he's talking about adding technology to it. the symbolic measure of the president having an accomplishment when it comes to the wall are what democrats are against. >> doug: i am saying that's exactly right. there has to be a compromise around a fence, enhance border security, and some path to citizenship for daca residents, notwithstanding the issues -- >> lawrence: it's a separate

issue. i don't understand why democrats keep lumping it together. there's border security and then there's taking care of the people already here. fixing a problem with the kids that are here that have nothing to do with the border. >> doug: you can. >> katie: i think if barack obama would have decided to build a wall to stop and an influx, democrats would've gone for it. >> dana: they should hammer that a little bit more because the democrats did vote for border security, fencing, things that look like a wall. it's not just the symbolism of the wall. a lot of it is political symbolism. the shutdown so far has been a little bit symbolic. if you're one of the 900,000 being furloughed, that's a big deal to you. i hope they can take comfort in the fact that the government has done backpay for them. the first real day of the

shutdown is actually today, but because the president gave christmas eve as a holiday as well. we will see what sort of pain comes, but i think they end up at 3.3 billion. >> doug: isn't it ridiculous, the whole thing? the shutdown, the fight, isn't it the worst? >> tom: i don't know if it's ridiculous. i told think it's fair for the president to throw a temper tantrum to give me your 5 billion are knocking to get your government back. >> doug: to me, it's a bad mistake politically. we will see. we will come back and talk about umass amherst taking campus pc to a new level after asking a student to remove a sign condemning nazis. wait until you hear why next. en. zicam is completely different.

happy hanukkah message. the university saying "emphatically the university rejects nazis and any other hate group and respects the student's right to display the sign." we were talking about this in my problem is this, leftists don't understand freedom of speech. they think hate speech is not protected by the constitution, which it is. what's your viewpoint? >> doug: my view is i don't have any trouble with the sign. i don't have any trouble with the language. i do have problems with the student who defaced a happy hanukkah sign with the sign and symbol of the nazi party. i wish umass amherst spent more time trying to figure out who had defaced the sign and disciplining the student rather than making a ridiculous statement that means nothing on the sign that absolutely is right, reasonable, and

appropriate. >> lawrence: there's two parts. obviously it's wrong for them to deface the sign. nobody stands up with nazis. >> katie: its vandalism and they should be charged for it. >> lawrence: that's what you charge them with. then there's the end of freedom of speech, you can't kick the student out but you can have students on campus that disagree with nazis and say hey, actually we don't like you. we don't support you. >> katie: vandalism and defacing signs is not freedom of speech. but i will sam confused about this. leftists want to punch nazis but this university saying we are not going -- we are going to condemn nazis but were not going to do it by using the f word and if you use the f word, were going to take your sign down and ask you maybe to use nicer language when you're condemning nazis. this is a problem when you pick and choose. it's a college campus. these people are adults. maybe they can make the case to because it's being displayed from a dorm room that not everybody should have to look at the f word but the bottom line is the universities try to

redraw the rules every time. nobody knows what the rules are. the first amendment covers everything. the point is when a phase -- a sign is defaced, you have freedom of speech that allows you to condemn that action. more people are going to see her sign condemning end of the meeting on the side of the hate group. them trying to regulate this by sending letters and feeling unsafe, it's absolutely ridiculous. grow up and deal with it. >> lawrence: my day job, we covered all of this type of anti-free speech stuff every day. do you think we as a society have done our kids a disservice by not educating them on the freedoms? >> dana: you look at the polls that say they'd be happy with striking the first amendment. that's also, it's a big one. i think the university itself goes on in a facebook post to say a poorly worded email from

resident life staff asking students to take down the sign does not reflect the values of the campus. i don't know they are just trying to blame a student for this. on campus, this is what you'd call a teachable moment. >> doug: how about some more holocaust education? that would be a good thing. >> lawrence: it's not just that. today in the sport, movie it was one of those moments where one person just goofed up. this is not an isolated event. school after school after school not understanding what freedom is in this country. isn't it a problem? >> doug: huge problem. >> tom: there's a reason we are confused about this and they didn't know what they mean. they start firing off emails. the other day, a high school in new york to the sound of music and they had to write a disclaimer in the program because there was a swastika in the sound of music. we know why there's a swastika and it's because there's nazis in it. they had the disclaimer and they say we abhor hate in all its

forms. my 9-year-old said to me, don't they realize the nazis are the bad guy in that play. yeah, they should realize that. >> lawrence: it seems like their whole issue with this entire thing was the f word. >> katie: problem is there's a very, very serious problem with anti-semitism on campuses across the country. but because the left has called everybody a nazi who dares to be a conservative, they have devalued the term. when you have a real incident of a hanukkah sign being defaced with a swastika, the focus is not on that. the focused is on a woman who decided to condemn the nazi sign with her own sign that happened to feature the f word that was being used against nazis. it doesn't address the real question. >> doug: that's why anti-semitism and anti-holocaust education is so important because katie is absolutely right. >> lawrence: alexandria ocasio-cortez being called out for politicizing christmas with

a refugee. she's being slammed for politicizing the holiday but it's not the only criticism she is receiving. claire mccaskill with some harsh words about the incoming congresswomen. >> i'm a little confused why she said the thing but it's a good example of what i'm talking about. a bright and shiny object. came out of nowhere and surprised people. >> katie: senator mccaskill also calling out ocasio-cortez's big government ideas. >> i hope she also realizes that the parts of the country that are rejecting the democratic party, like a whole lot of white working-class voters, they need to hear about how their work is going to be respected and the dignity of their jobs and how we can really stick to issues that we can actually accomplish something on. the rhetoric is cheap. getting results is a lot harder.

>> katie: pastor jones, i first want to get to the jesus analogy and then we'll get onto mccaskill. is it an accurate thing for her to say? >> lawrence: it's not. it's important for the left understand. they only want to use jesus when it's convenient and they got the whole story about jesus wrong as well. >> katie: so not a referee g? >> lawrence: was not a refugee. when it comes to the democrats, you are way too emotional. you know that your candidates. you guys get so invested -- so invested in the personality. for example, the guardian just did an article today going through beto o'rourke's voting record. talking about how he voted with republicans for the majority of the time until he decided he was going to be the next president of the united states, the senator from texas. everyone loves beto but it's not about what he would do.

it's how he makes you feel. >> doug: isn't feeling part of politics? as to claire mccaskill, she certainly right. you have to be a moderate in most of america. on the two coasts, not so much but in middle america where the democrats reclaimed seats and states that donald trump largely won, it was moderates, not progressives, who won. claire mccaskill is proof positive somebody who fell victim to the left-wing drift of the democratic party. i wish i didn't have to agree through on that, lawrence, but sadly i do. >> katie: we are saying this far left shift nationally with the new freshman class of congress women in particular. is there a way for them to swing back or is the party, the democratic party in this place where they are really having the struggle between the moderates and middle america and the leftists on the coasts? >> dana: it's going to be one of the most exciting things to watch in 2019 and going into the 2020 election. red state democrats are on the

endangered species list. claire mccaskill has been on this goodbye to her. she's done a lot of interviews. i think were going to see a lot more of her and i think it would be good. >> doug: i think it would be very good. >> dana: she is quite liberal but she tries to talk as if she were moderate. it didn't help her in missouri. she lost. and i think as a check on some of the newer energy, but the democrats needed that new energy too. they wouldn't have won back the house without it. >> katie: the question is, are the kids, the younger democrats, going to tell people like claire mccaskill your time is over. you are a loser. i won my district. we are the new party now. we don't need your lectures. >> tom: claire mccaskill is playing dumb there. i am confused. she's not confused. she knows why she's popular. she did unseat the establishment. i think alexandria ocasio-cortez is antiestablishment and i think

people, we talk about the forgotten people and the trump voter, there can be some crossover here. i think president trump should take note because the establishment democrats, they don't like these fiery leftists, and i think there is some crossover to be taken advantage of. >> katie: she says a lot of things that i vehemently disagree with but she just say interesting things about the federal government and she was a bernie sanders -- bernie sanders with her mentor and a lot of people who voted for bernie sanders and the primary motive for donald trump. >> doug: is the only one on this panel will probably wants to see a democrat elected in 2020, i would like her to just go away. be quiet. >> katie: she is not going away. >> doug: i hope she does and i hope nancy pelosi gets to her and says you better, for yourself, be silent for a while. she's not either the face or the voice of the democratic party that i grew up with. >> katie: but she is the new face of the democratic party.

do you think they are underestimating her? >> lawrence: they are and i think republicans are underestimating her. you can't laugh at socialism when they start winning. she's not the only one. >> katie: a lot of the freshman. >> katie: >> lawrence: the rises colleges, they think socialism works. claire mccaskill is the jeff flake of the democratic party. all these people start talking when you lose. if you are really bold, talk before you lose. >> katie: he didn't even lose. he resigned. >> dana: but she lost. >> katie: she had the courage to run and fight it out and lose with dignity and said to retire early because you knew you couldn't won a primary in your home state and then magically think you could won against donald trump in 2020. i think claire mccaskill has some legitimate things to offer when it comes what she sang about red districts that are red because of trump that were blue before during obama.
