leader of the senate. if they thought border security was important then, why isn't it important now? nothing has really changed, it has gotten worse which back then we were concerned about marijuana coming over the border, now we are concerned about apps, fentanyl and methamphetamines coming over the border. so the idea of having barriers in place seems more salient now than it was 12 years ago which was almost an innocent time in border security. right now it is simply politics, simply a democratic base that wants to deny donald trump any kind of victory whatsoever. shannon: that seems pretty evident, not only drugs crossing over, these places that are not protected but these parents and adults bringing these children because they know they can at least attempt to get across these areas and the death of two migrant children in detention prompting what has been called more thorough health assessments at the border.
1:45 am
what is your thought on all of that? >> i have no problem with more thorough health assessments of people at the border for a simple reason and that is this is the end of a very harrowing and perilous journey these people have undertaken to the united states. a third of all migrants are assaulted in one way or other before they come to the united states, 10% of women sexually assaulted and/or raped on their way to the united states so when you make the thousand mile plus journey through mexico to the united states it is a lot for an adult. if you imagine what it is like for 7 or 8-year-old child, i am a parent and remember taking a child on a car trip. if you imagine what it is like walking for an extended period of time, kids show up at the border that may not show any signs of illness, they get screened by border patrol, border patrol does a very good job because they don't want to see these kids harmed.
