>> the reason he went now is that he couldn't go to mar-a-lago because the government was shut down. he is like the grinch. instead of i'm being honest. >> we should also be concerned that mr. trump once again used a captive audience of american heroes to push his unpopular domestic agenda. even in doing something right he figures out a way to sow chaos. >> it took far too long especially compared to president obama who visited troops in iraq in his first three months in office. >> over at cnn, attacking the president wasn't enough, they decided to attack the troops as well. >> the pool of reporters traveling said that the troops brought the hats with them, including one hat that said trump 2020. we have to see if that actually proves to be the case. the question is if they brought them or if the president brought them, what commanders allow you had that to really happen because this is very much against military policy and regulation. troops are not supposed to

be involved in political activities. the u.s. military is not a political force. >> it's completely inappropriate for the troops to do. this. >> mark: back when presidential candidate barack obama signed memorabilia for the troops back in 2008. he had a d after his name though instead of an r. thankfully not everybody has lost their mind. some liberals scolded the media for their hysteria. >> it's good that he went to see the troops. important that he went to do it. he was criticized for it obviously. they wanted to address that and so i should -- we should give him credit where credit is due. >> it just sends such a strong message that the trumps love our military, support our military and what a great time to do it. >> mark: joe concha writes about media for the hill he joins us now. joe, is this a good look for the media? why are serving soldiers in

a war zone bringing particular hats to an event on base in a combat zone at christmas? >> well, the optics around that, mark, are horrific. what you are doing here is it's okay to go after the president in terms of policy or the things that he says. once you start attacking the people that voted for him or military people that are obviously serving overseas during christmas, no less, then you have got a problem. you have to ask yourself this question, mark. let's say honestly like you pointed out as i did in my column today on the hill, if president obama, as he did in 2008, signed a hope and change t-shirts, do you really think any news organization would have gone ahead with that story? of course they wouldn't have. >> mark: no, i couldn't care less what soldiers in these, frankly god awful situations, because life at a base in iraq stinks. it's not like being in germany where the president

was today. you can't stroll down to town and go to a local march and meet one of the nice german girls or one of the local girls. it's nothing like that. you are stuck in that lousy fortress that you hope is a fortress. and the president comes to visit you. and the preoccupation of the american media is whether hats, the troops chose to take to that event, are somehow some potential crime that they can be pulled up in front of a military court for. i mine, that's -- isn't it. >> it's bonkers. the original narrative we all recall president trump was supposed to be the first president since 2002 to not visit the troops at christmas. once that fell apart when he literally landed in iraq as the story was going up and originally came from nbc, then social media goes nuts. and what happened was the pivot went from oh, yeah, okay. trump went, sure. but what was his motive,

exactly for going? i give you "the washington post," mark. quoting: the president's visit follows months of public pressure for him to spend time with troops deployed to conflicts in the middle east. think about that again. follows months of public pressure in other words we the media got the public riled up to force trump to go to a war zone instead of him just going like every president has done for the past 17 years. >> according to soledad o'brien who is a lovely lady she thought it was actually minutes of public pressure that alyssa milano who actually tweeted as the president was halfway across the ocean why haven't you visited our troops? soledad o'brien gave alyssa milano credit for shaming the president for getting on the plane that he had already gotten on. >> yeah. and what's forgotten in all of this is if you want to go to walter reed, let's say the president was shamed and he goes to walter reed which is close to the white house, then okay you could say it's a last-minute thing. when you go to iraq you kind

of have to plan it in advance. you have to do it weeks in advance for security. air force one has to fly in with shades down and cell phones off and all of that you would think you would see though, however, at least from nbc and others, some remorse, some apology, some arranged hey, we went ahead with this story a little bit too early because we ran a story on christmas saying the president hadn't been to to see the troops at christmas time. people don't mind that sort of transparency from the media. yet, we never see those sort of co concession he is. yet we see the pivot to the negative like we always do in these situations that's why trust in media is this. axios, survey monkey poll just last year 93% of republicans think that the media knowingly creates stories, makes them up. they are false. republicans have always hated the media and don't trust them u 79% of independents, 53% of democrats, each out majority. that's the thing. this is something that's going across the board all parties see egg what's

happening here,. >> as soon as the media called for a special counsel to investigate how those maga hats got to iraq everything will be fine. michelle richie is a former house for policy and communication committee and rachel campos-duffy is a fox contributor and they both join us. raychel, how -- stepping back and looking at this a little more objectively than cnn has done. the troops like the guy. the guy got on with the troops. is there any really political mileage being had going on. >> i had a little bit of a battle myself. first of all i was saying no men and women of uniform shouldn't have gotten the hats signed and been out there with make america great again hats. when you look at the facts it is breaking a rule when it comes to the department of defense guidelines. at the same time, these troops have not seen an american president since

2009. i believe obama was the last one to go visit. so maybe they are not necessarily, you know, showing support for the president or getting his signature because they are republican. maybe -- now, listen, listen. how can you disagree i haven't even finished. the commander is their commander-in-chief. maybe it's not because is he a republican president. maybe they are looking at it like he is a commander-in-chief. we're proud to fight for our country and proud to stand behind our president whether he has an r or d behind his name. i can really care less if the guys do it. as long as they are continuing to protect our national security, have at it. >> mark: rochelle gave that theory more credit than i would think. >> i'm very balanced. >> mark: if you have the misfortune to be spending christmas on one of those forts caught off from life in the middle of the iraqi dessert, who the hell cares what hat you take to a christmas party, basically. >> of course they shouldn't care. the more important question is let's be honest, the

reaction from the troops was very overwhelmingly positive. and it should be. listen, barack obama disseminated our moisture. barack obama -- wait a minute. he cut funding for our military. he put in rules of engagement. >> that's not even. >> wait a minute. >> what does to that have to do with what would are talking about. >> it does have to do? >> how? >> barack obama enacted rules of engagement rochelle, let me fin anyone. evidence enacted rules of engagement that put our military on the battlefield in danger. wait a minute, mark, he did that and they said he was a great commander-in-chief. donald trump goes over and does all of this to not for alyssa milano or the media, he does it because he loves the troops, and they say he is doing it for a photo op. this is a man who loves the military. that's his number one issue. >> mark: okay. how about this as a non-democrat non-republican thing. democrats weren't in favor of the 21st century bush wars as they called them.

>> right. >> right. >> mark: nor was donald trump in 2016. in offense, donald trump is at odds with both democrat policy and republican policy on the middle east, row rochelle. >> he is definitely fighting both sides. the reason the press is attacking on him, the left-leaning press i would say is because of some of the misleading comments that he made when he talked about the pay raises for the military. we know that's not necessarily true. they do get raises but they are not getting the 10% raise. it's going to be 2.6%. way uses media was looking at it and attacking him for his less than knowledgeable education, i guess you could say, on what's really happening there. i have think that him visiting was a good idea there was an article why out "the washington post" that says he was actually scared to go over there. >> he was not skate what would they have had him do? say i'm sorry i'm not

requesting to sign your hat because of the happen act and criticize him oh what a jerk. >> i thought that was perfectly fine. >> mark: there is too much of that. if you are seriously talking about soldiers doing something wrong because they ask their commander-in-chief to sign a hat, then you have flown the coop. >> the reason why the american people hate the press. and by the way the troops love the president because he did sign a bill that he took a lot of flack from the right for signing a big bill that was for funding the military. they love him. >> his whole purpose of being there and this is part of it. i think he also has a lot -- i think there was a part in this segment right before you came to us about this being public pressure. i think it's more political pressure because of him, you know, general kelly and then general mattis and so i think he is really trying to show that has some sort of control of what is happening right now in the middle in iraq. >> why doesn't that criticism come to barack obama? he goes to visit the troops

it's all yours. >> good evening, mark. congress officially and briefly gastled in this afternoon. though there is no sign of this shutdown ending any time soon. democrats and the white house are a few billion dollars apart on funding for a wall on the southern border. president trump has returned to the white house after visiting u.s. forces yesterday in iraq. he has just tweeted, quote: this isn't about the wall. everybody knows that a wall will work perfectly in israel the wall works 99.9%. this is only about the dems not letting donald trump and the republicans have a win. they may have the 10 senate votes but we have the issue, border security 2020. in a statement, white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders says, quote: the president and his team in washington over christmas hoping to negotiate a deal that would stop the dangerous crisis on the border, protect american communities and reopen the government. the democrats decided to go home. she also says the administration offered democrats what she calls a reasonable common sense

solution five days ago. though a spokesperson for house minority leader nancy pelosi says, quote: democrats have offered republicans three option to reopen the government that all include funding for strong, sensible and effective border security but not the president's immoral, ineffective and expensive wall. while in iraq, president trump stressed the funding bill must include money for a border wall. >> the folks are saying can we have some drones. can we have technology. technology is bells and whistles. you have to have a wall. you have to have protection. when you say how long is it going to take? when are they going to say that we need briewts. end this shut town the house the senate and the white house must all agree on the same funding bill. on capitol hill, house freedom caucus chairman mark meadows says the needle has moved towards a very long shutdown. the democrats and republicans appear to talk past one another.

♪ >> el paso, texas is turning into exhibit a of america's broken immigration system. ice has been overwhelmed by asylum requests and shackled

by court rules and now releasing hundreds of migrants onto the streets of el paso. the message to future migrants, of course, is that america is powerless to stop them from settling here. fox's jonathan hunt is here with more. jonathan? >> good evening, mark. homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen says the immigration system is at breaking point. border patrol agents say they are overwhelmed. around 1,000 immigrants have been released onto the streets of el paso, texas, this week alone. and two young immigrant children have died after being taken into custody by customs and border protection agents. the first deaths of children in cpp custody in a decade. in el paso immigration and customs enforcement officials say they have little choice but to release those hundreds of immigrants because of, quote. decades of inaction by congress that they say has limited their ability to remove families who are in the u.s. illegally and have set limits on how long they

can hold those families so they are being dropped off at bus station in el paso where aid groups are offering support. more by the way are expected to be released today. >> they have spent 8 to 10 days in cells. now they have been released what we have been doing as a community is to support them. giving them food and a place to stay at night. >> president trump has repeatedly said the era of so-called catch and release has ended but, frankly, that is exactly what is happening in texas right now. and it all comes against the back drop of the government shutdown over president trump's demand for a border wall that he says could stem the flow of illegal immigration. the wall and, of course, the deaths of those two immigrants children will no doubt top the agenda when homeland security secretary nielsen visits the border area in el paso, texas friday and huma, arizona

saturday. mark? >> mark: just to be clear on that, jonathan, ice can hold these people if that chap is right for 10 days or whatever and meanwhile they are given a two year court date gap between 10 days and two years they get to hang out in america. that's the idea, is it? >> right. what ice is saying is that under the current laws they have no choice but to release these immigrants after that time frame and, therefore, they take them to the bus station and then, yes. essentially they are free to go where they wish to do as they please. mark. >> mark: that seems a bit of a design flaw, jonathan. while migrants continue to pour into the united states. critics of the president maintain nothing can be done because the wall is useless. cnn recently ranted about the futility of mankind's oldest defensive mechanism. >> this whole issue is a crock from start to finish. he picked it up on the

campaign trail as something to appease the masses and play to his base. it's not going to stop terrorism. it's not going to be 2,000 miles long as originally planned. it's not going to be see-through. it's not going to be echo friendly or flats or beaded curtain or anything else. you can't wall that border. >> mark: jimmy kimmel meanwhile has been ridiculing americans so desperate for a secure border they have been waiting to donate to a go fund me campaign for it. this trump support are a guy named brian started a go fund me campaign to raise a billion dollars for the wall. he launched it on sunday. it's already up to almost $9 million. this is what people do with their disposable income when they don't have loans from college to pay off. [laughter] donating money for a wall that will never exist, it's like starting a college fund for harry potter. [laughter] it's more useful thing to do with your money would be to go outside and feed it to a bird. you do have to admire the

sacrifice, they are making. a lot of these people are dipping into their meth money for this. >> mark: got it meth heads for national security. thank you, jimmie. would a wall work or not. jason piccolo is a former special eight and supervisor with the department of homeland security and he joins us now. everybody is morning this. we have had nancy pelosi doing her beaded curtain line at this stage i would welcome a 2,000-mile beaded curtain along the southern border it would show a certain kind of resolve. are these critics right that this thing doesn't work, doesn't make any difference, a complete waste of time? >> no. it will work. the border is 2,000 miles lock. you went be able to actually wall the whole border. but that will create choke points or points where we can actually apprehend the immigrants coming. in yes, the wall would work. >> what's interesting to me if you look up on the northern border where there is far fewer people coming across.

not caravans amassing on the 49th parallel. yet the united states government has actually put physical barricades in a lot of cross border towns on the canadian border presumably because it works there. so, why would it not work on the mexican border? >> walls work. they do. now, when i worked on the border, the border was simply a strand of fence in some areas. like a strand of wire. now, you have narcotraffickers coming across that same area migrants. it's open. the whole border is pretty much open except for a few miles here and there. when you say it's open because most people who do cross international legitimately like they do so border posts. even though you talk about that incessantly. there are 100-mile stretches where people can just walk into the united states.

, mark it was another chaotic day on wall street. yesterday it had the largest day in history. today it fell by more than 600 points. in the afternoon the market rallied surging almost 900 points to finish the day up by 258 points. the market is still down about 2500 points this month.

in what's been a very tumultuous end to the year. like these algorithms fell face down in the eggnog. the french has been rioting for more than a month now after emmanuel macron's government tried to impose anti-global warming gas tax upon them. nevertheless, a lot of americans, including the outgoing senator jeff flake think it's time for america to have its own carbon tax. is that wise? mark reynolds is executive director of the citizens climate lobby and he joins us. mark, when you see what's happening in france, that's a more extreme version of what happens when carbon taxes are actually put into place elsewhere. people don't seem to like it. don't seem to care for it. >> first of all, thanks so much for having me on the show. the nice thing about the energy innovation and carbon dividend act is that it actually puts money in people's pockets. so i think there are people

who are suffering both here and in other countries. i think that the reason there is so much republican support on both the house and the that th senate version s bill it sends allocates money back to households so they are prepared to deal with whatever they have to. and, again, doesn't tell them what to do with that money just let's them make a choice about what they want to do with it. >> this is the bill being proposed and the carbon tax being proposed in the in the united states under the proposal supposedly then gives money back to households. but, here's one big problem with it, mark. basically the automatic increases kick in i think starting around 2022 and they basically go all the way up until mid century. it's beyond the control of other congresses. it just becomes like intittledment program that gets automatic increases every year. and is beyond the control -- you can't go to a polling station if you don't like it if the facts change if the

circumstances change. it essentially puts the carbon tax beyond democratic accountability, doesn't it? >> well, representative francis rooney who is the lead republican sponsor from florida says that he likes this bill because it's market-based. it actually let's the market determine how we get to the new energy economy. i think that's a lot of what mr. fitzpatrick one of the republicans on the bill also said is you put a fee on carbon based emissions. you give the money back to households so the government doesn't pick what to do with it you don't pick winners and losers up to you and i to determine what we do what the dinksdz. that's why they like it so much. >> mark: what did you think of the ci institute it will actually kill america's new energy independence which is a phenomena of the last few years what we see with tracking and so forth and means we are no longer

dependent on maligned saudi shakes spread their wahhabi view around the world. carbon tax is going to kill american energy independence. >> there is something interesting happening right now there is a race to the new energy economy. it's probably going to be either us or china. china is making a huge investment. i'm certainly hope it does. i think it bill creates enough incentive throughout the entire economic system to create all the type of innovation that we know we need. >> there is no carbon tax in china. the most polluted river in the world. what's coming down that stream every day is nothing you would want any of your kids to be gambling and fraw licking in. what the french protesters object to this is their lives. it's not a theory. it's not a mac degree

>> mark: tucker recently sat down to interview the author of a new book on the crisis afflicting american men. here's what happened. ♪ ♪ >> tucker: if you look at the numbers you quickly conclude that men are in crisis in america. compared to women, they are far more likely to drop out of 1k508, fail to graduate, go to jail. not hold a jail, commit suicide. die of a drug overdose and

yet the establishment, particularly democratic establishment seems uninterested in all of this. and they appear to think that men are still too successful and need ton held back. a former "new york times" reporter senior policy institute wrote an important new book called "man out, man on the sidelines of american life." he joins us in studio tonight. thank you for coming on. >> thank you, tucker. >> tucker: i don't think you are a conservative activist and i'm also grateful that someone is saying this because the numbers support that it is true. >> it is true. and as you say, the problem has really largely been ignored. i mean, democrats and a lot of people in the country don't see men as having problems. but there are a lot of men who are struggling. struggling with work. struggling in families. struggling with health. a lot of areas i touch on in my book. >> tucker: to such a great extent it would seem a crisis that effects everybody because, of course, men and women need each other to reproduce on

the most basic level but everybody has a father, a brother, a son. why do you think it's been ignored? >> well, it's been a lot of political correctness in this country that's kind of made the main narrative that women are the oppressed ones and they have been historically oppressed. but, you know, that doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of men struggling. i mean, you don't -- it's not a zero subgame. >> tucker: right. it's been presented as one. that one sex succeeds only when another moves backward. where did that assumption comes from. >> i think a lot of politics looks at things that way. i think it's pretty unfortunate. i think, you know, men have not been in many ways good at advocating for themselves. i mean, it's been interesting in the last few elections a lot of the political activists have been women hear more.

men aren't good at forming groups anymore. >> tucker: you work in mostly a liberal world. what kind of reaction did your piece get among people that you know? >> well, it's interesting, conservative media have tended to like it more. it's, you know, it's kind of troubling that this should be a bipartisan issue. i mean, all americans should be doing well or should have the opportunity to do well. and they should also have justice behind them. i mean, men are being accused wrongly. i mean, there are a lot of all of things that men do. don't get me wrong, sure. but, you know, the lack of due process in some of these sexual assault allegations it's, you know, it's pretty troubling. >> tucker: it's interesting the most progressive president the country has ever had fdr four terms, the first thing he did after

getting elected in 193 193 the very few piece through the congress was the conservation corps aimed at young men between 18 and 25. something like that. getting them back to work and restoring their vitality through work. what would happen if a democrat in the modern era suggested something like that? >> you think it would play well. while the unemployment statistics look good, there are a lot of young men pushed out of the labor force or dropped out there. are about 17, 18% of 25 to 64-year-old men who aren't working. and you know, there are a lot of younger men who are neither in school or working. so, you know, why is that? and, you know, why can't we create better jobs for them and, yes, i mean, you take a democrat would pitch some kind of jobs program. >> tucker: this is a longer conversation but i think the answer is toxic masculinity.

>> yeah. >> tucker: whatever that means. >> that's become the phrase dejurydejury, i guess. there are clearly questions with masculinity. i interviewed some men and some women about 200. a lot of men told me even liberal mental said well feminism has done a lot for women but wha what's it done for me. >> tucker: that's a fair question. ask you it in this book thank you for doing that. >> thank you. >> tucker: good to talk to you. >> good to talk to you. ♪ ♪ >> mark: one of the biggest stories of our time. so is this one. big tech has become the greatest threat to americans' privacy and personal freedoms but now americans seem to be wising up to that new survey finds that americans trust facebook less than any other company. also, a growing number of americans are seeking treatment for tech addiction as they find themselves unable to look away from

social media, their smart phones or video games. tom, a family therapist and author of "disconnected" how to reconnect our digitally distracted kids. i have read that book and so should you. and he joins us now. just to go with the tuck err, the big story of our time thing, when you look at this so-called tech addiction, and you follow where that leads, you do worry that in some ways these rinky dinky little things started as cat video sites are somehow basically rewiring humanity. >> if we counted the number of people walk by staring at their phones probably 77% doing that look at addiction, anything worry weather it's gambling, alcohol, drugs, anything that's considered addictive, if it's affecting one of the following four you could be diagnosed as that. the four things is it affecting your family? is it affecting your health?

is it affecting your job or occupation? and is it affecting -- have you had any legal issues? when we look at technology, we could check off each one of those for many people. addictive whether it's a debate or not i movie in it 100 percent. >> >> mark: being organized on a global scale with billions and billions of people. when you look at children, like middle schoolers who have never known anything but this world, their behavior does seem to be not where middle schoolers were 50, 70 years ago. >> it's actually unbelievable. i tell people i get more middle aged kids with major anxiety executive orders per year now than i did the prior 17 years combined. all the research is starting to show that the absorption of mainstream media. the lack of self. could at lack of the sense of self-and how it's

affecting your self-esteem anxiety impression and other mental health things. >> mark: people do seem to prefer it though. you have a see scene in your book young guy sitting in a bar. never know who is on the bar stool next to you. i can relate to that sometimes you find yourself sitting next to australia, hungarian you meet different people with different views. now like everybody is scrolling. >> if you go into the airport and travel. they have the screens in want from of every bear school school citizen he had of kicking it off everybody is distracted by devices. >> sometimes you want to go where only facebook knows your name. >> right. like bottles of wine dangling around if you are an alcoholic 24 hours a day, seven days a week. you can't escape from it. >> mark: that's a worriying thing. i think 24 is one the biggest stories of our time. i hate to think where we are going to be if we don't change it.
