standoff. the president and democrats appear unwilling to waiver on the wall as the government shutdown enters tenth day, garrett tenney live in washington where negotiations are at standstill. good morning, garrett. >> heather, good morning to you, based on what we are hearing the shutdown will last late this week, but most likely a week or two beyond that. negotiations between democratic leaders in the white house haven't really been happening in the past week and both sides appear to be digging in but behind the scenes the number of lawmakers in both parties have been mean to go try and work out a deal to end the shutdown, the proposals being discussed include combination of funding for the wall, fix for daca and a number of other immigration provisions that democrats support with the hope being that those additions could be enough to win their support with this deal, senator lindsey graham is one of those lawmakers and after meeting with the president on sunday he said president trump is open to making a deal with

democrats. >> the president is firm in his commitment to make sure we get money for border security and they'll never be a 60 vote deal in the senate that doesn't include money for border security/wall. and i don't see democrats giving us more money unless they get something. the one thing we talked about is making deals. >> president trump is also making his case for a wall on twitter tweeting sunday president and mrs. obama built compound, the u.s. needs thing, slightly larger version. so far democratic leaders are holding firm that the wall is a nonstarter for them in negotiations. >> yes, we did comprehensive immigration reform, yes, we need to enhance border security but we are not willing to pay $2.5 billion or $5 billion in wasting taxpayer dollars on a

joins us now live to talk about it. good morning to you, thank you very much for joining us. >> good to be with you. heather: big night in times square, actually lots of celebrations all across the country and, you know, a lot of folks doing their part to keep everyone safe. >> and you have to understand one thing, america is one giant soft target and honestly we wouldn't have it any other way. i mean, as much as some people on the left like to squaller that we live in police state, we live further than police state. freedom, there's a huge challenge when you want to make sure that you have an event, wonderful parties in times square and not allow someone to attack it, while the police can have massive presence, you have to understand they are operating at disadvantage as much as they can do. heather: yeah, absolutely. but something that will give them at least a little more of an advantage this year, we've been reporting that they will be using drones.

>> and what a great idea, i mean, it's a new technology that allows them to have a camera anywhere they want at any point in time and, you know, at some places like to uk they have a very extensive array of close-circuit television that's streamed directly to the police that they can use, we don't do that. most of the close circuit cameras are private in the united states, this gives the police control of what's going on and the ability to if something start to happen to get eyes on it immediately and hopefully deploy some of the 7,000 officers directly to it as quick as they can. heather: so many officers not just here in new york city but really across the country because as you mentioned, i mean, these are soft targets. >> yeah, and one of the things, one of the best ways to stop bad things from happening is first the police will do everything they can, you know, they'll be doing investigations, they'll have informants, they'll be doing under cover work but the eyes of the people, you know, the army of davids that are all over are the best first alert

system, so it's a cliché but if you see something, say something, don't profile by identity, profile by activity, if you see someone doing something suspicious, it doesn't matter who that person is, it matters what they are doing, that's what you want to be looking for. heather: if you're wrong, sobeit. take the chance. >> exactly. heather: obviously one of the huge concerns, terrorists, for example, isis and there's been a lot of discussion recently right now in terms of syria where isis now controls i think it's less than 1% of the territory there and president trump announces troop withdrawal, lindsey graham came out yesterday after meeting with the president and said, kind of backtracked, he was totally against this, well, now i understand a little bit more, what are your thoughts on that? >> i think the president explain today him that there's a plan, we are not just going to pull the troops out and leave a vacuum. there's been a plan all along, we helped provide ideas this

quit smoking and see your doctor. >> these are some of the top 5 new year's resolutions anyone has and i threw in a couple of my favorites that i want people to have as well. of course, exercise more and lose weight, it's something we all want to do and i say that's a good thing. we know obesity is an epidemic, this is the time to make new changes, this is wonderful time for that. small changes i think can make a big difference. heather: okay. >> sometimes we go to new year, i will go to the jim every day and not eat anything unhealthy, it's not that we can't do that, small changes can make a big difference, start by walking more, start by getting treadmill when you're watching favorite show, cutting out a little bit of fattening foods just to start with the lose-weight exercise. heather: sometimes you try to do all or nothing you get disappointed quickly. i will run marathon tomorrow and when you can't do it, okay, forget it. [laughter] heather: give up on it.

>> it's important to surround ourselves with people who support our in addition, you -- mission, you know, but i also put down the idea of putting yourselves first because i think a lot of times we put ourselves last and that is making sure that we are taking time for mindfulness, yoga, going to church, whatever is important for you, i think it's really important for stress ways. heather: very difficult for parents to do that. >> yes, or anyone taking care of other people, i have many patient who is are caretakers, own parents or others and it can be very difficult. >> absolutely. a couple of my others smoking, i think the biggest thing is to make them stick. heather: we have tips of how to make them stick. >> how do make them stick, this is really important to write down your goals. i'm a writer and i still have legal pads all over my desk with notes scribbled all over them. writing them, note pad on the phone or writing them down, kind

well, senator lindsey graham appearing more on board with the president's plan to take u.s. troops out of syria after productive lunch at the white house. >> we talked about syria and he told me some things i didn't know that made me feel a lot better about where we are headed in syria. heather: graham says the president reassured him that isis would be destroyed and allies would be protected. graham was initially critical of the president's decision to pull all american troops out of syria. with that new optimism behind the president's plan all eyes are on turkey to keep isis at bay in the region. trey reports from jerusalem. >> as u.s. troops prepare to leave syria, the american withdrawal is already being felt across the region. russian-backed syrian forces entered the north eastern city

quite clearly that our hands were tied because of political interference that california's sanctuary laws were responsible for what happened and did not allow law enforcement to report the criminal activity of this horrendous murder to ice, he should any further have been in the country, he was allowed and enabled because of sanctuary laws and we need to say it loudly and every single member of congress in california that's been against border security, needs to answer, needs to change policies and needs to secure our border so no one losses their life again. heather: they should be commenting at least, should not have been here, has been arrested before, he's a member of a gang, known-game -- known-gang ties. >> first of all, the killing of officer is deplorable and should be condemned and should be condemned across the board. that's not the real issue, the real issue is we don't have an

immigration system at all that's functioning. we need comprehensive program, we need to ensure that individuals like this killer that they are prosecuted properly. we can get them without generalizing about an entire immigrant population. the sanctuary cities, to be very blunt often times have allowed individuals to call the police against criminal activity. they enable people to feel comfortable to do that. it's not at all clear that sanctuary cities are the cause of this, we shouldn't mix cause and effect and the individuals should be prosecuted but not because he's immigrant it's because he's a bad individual. >> you look at numbers and ice apprehended 127,000 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions, that includes more than 1,000 homicides and that was last year alone. there are bad contingency, not everyone but certainly some and not a single american not one

should lose their life because the laws were not enforced. there are far too many examples from officers, dominic, kate stanley and you can name their names, democrats need to stop vacationing and come back to negotiate so people are safe and secure in our country and in our borders. >> well, clearly the laws work if these individuals were arrested. i mean, that's not the problem, it's not because democrats are causing comprehensive immigration laws. heather: didn't work because we have a dead american, we have an immigrant who actually came here and did it right the legal way and the only thing he wanted to do was serve this country and pay this country back and the legal immigrant is dead and we have and illegal immigrant who has been arrested twice for dui and, you know, who was able to

get in across the border because we don't have border security. >> but i don't think that we would ask, i don't think the legal immigrant will say that all immigration should be shutdown as a cause. >> no one is saying that. >> that's why we shouldn't be walk get away from comprehensive immigration reform that creates process for asylum seekers that's real and legitimate, and right now we don't have them, trump administration is playing politics and blaming democrats rather than coming to the table and have negotiated outcome for that kind at the program. heather: they're not at the table because they're in hawaii. >> right, exactly. the only person, the only party here that's offered a solution, comprehensive immigration reform is president trump, he said i will give you daca legalization if in return you give me the barrier structure, border wall, a fair compromise, democrats walked away, nancy pelosi is in hawaii, chuck schumer laughed at the deal, this was a fair deal, you want border security, daca

job opportunities. people are not happy to work in low-paying jobs anymore. wages are rising, we are seeing shift in market from jobs like leisure and retail jobs that don't pay as much to jobs like construction, warehousing, manufacturing, this has been incredible for the american worker and, you know, one of the things that i think is going into 2016 people are looking forward to is increase in job, one of many, many promise that is the president has kept. >> shift from lower-paying jobs to higher-paying jobs as you mentioned. another thing in terms of the economy, tax cuts and deregulation. >> yeah, we've passed the first round of tax cuts and deregulation continues, one new regulation for every 22 regulations slashed when president trump took office, a hundred thousand pages of regulation in the federal register and this has been incredible year, has taken pressure away from businesses,

$8 billion and net save negotiation deregulation front and on top of that, we are looking to potentially second round of tax cuts which would be incredible for middle-class families and then, of course, over $5.5 trillion in net tax savings because of the tax cuts and drawbacks. heather: 85 federal judges who have been appointed since president trump took office. >> many, many people voted for this president because of the federal judiciary. i believe this is where his lasting legacy will lie, we have incredible justice neil gorsuch, brett kavanaugh and the most important thing is that the judges and justices are people who believe in the constitution and make sure they look to the text of the constitution on the bench and that's important and extremely important for the country. heather: we can never forget our veterans and in years past they have not received the care that they deserved, but this is
