house working you are out there partying. enjoy yourselves, we're going to have a great year have. a really, really happy new year. pete: that was basically the tone. we will play the clipsz of the interview i had the good fortune of having with him yesterday. people say cooped up in the white house. he felt he was almost resilient in what he was doing saying, hey, come negotiate if you want. 2018 was a good year. 2019 will be even better. i felt like it was optimistic trump as opposed to someone who feels like they had their back against the wall. rachel: proud of himself. listen, did i a good job this year. that's the sentiment i got. dean: last two years. pete: i don't have my folder of what happened. like end of t. > -- end of tpp,the iran deal. isis. we forget that all the time. talk about leaving syria. the reason we are leaving syria we have utterly disseminated isis campaign promise as well. add all those up, something

to feel good about in 2018. rachel: americans were polled to see what they think about the new year and what their resolutions are 44% of adults are likely to make a resolution. 56% not likely at all. pete: that is reflection of life learned. you go through and make all these resolutions by february they're like gone. dean: i can't make it to february. rachel: top resolutions exercising and quitting smoking and vowing to lose weight. so americans really are concerned about that. pete: eating healthier. being a better person generally. rachel: i like that. pete: dean, did you talk about, do you have a resolution? dean: i'm a goal-oriented person. i have clear goals. business goals and family goals and things like that. they are not resolutions things i want to have happen in 201. rachel: do you think about it in january? this is what i'm going to do. dean: i think about it in december. christmas.

let me take stock of the year. i have a minute around christmas time to do that and great time to do that and attack it in 201. rachel: do you follow through with your goal? dean: almost all the time. pete: this man gets a lot of things done. where in the world is dean contain. rachel: you can't be dean contain. dean: i did 23 countries last year. that was pretty amazing. pete: did i three. i don't know what a new year's resolution being a better person what would that look like. dean: you are pretty wonderful person. pete: that's unclear. that's rachel campos-duffy. dean: if i could be her then i would be a better question. rachel: i thought of both of you guys around midnight and i thought happy new year. i'm lying, around 9:30, 10:00. pete: talking about resolutions and predictions. i had a chance to talk to the president yesterday. i tried to pin him down. 2018 is gone. will. dean: it doesn't happen. pete: what are your predictions for 2019. this is what president trump

had to say yesterday. >> well, i think we're going to have a great form of wealth. we have created a lot of wealth for our country. and that's very important because that means jobs. that means prosperity. i really think we are going to have tremendous success with trade deals. i think we are going to have a tremendously rebuilt military for strength. pete: do you have any resolutions for 2019, sir? any resolutions? >> just success and prosperity and health for our country. that's all i want. dean: you got no resolutions. rachel: he is a goal guy like you. dean: i like that. thank you, mr. president. pete: he wasn't pinning anybody down in particular. he has a lot of big fights. the partial government shutdown still ongoing. unclear where that will go. nancy pelosi will likely become speaker here on january 3rd, a couple days away. until then nothing is really moving. we did get a glimpse yesterday. we got a statement from

chuck and nannies in response to the president. this is where they say they are in negotiations. they say while president trump drags the nation into week two of what they call the trump shutdown, democrats are taking action to lead our country out of this mess. and that action includes, apparently still no money for the wall. dean: what action are they taking? what are they doing? rachel: nothing. dean: we get our way or nothing happens. rachel: listen, what they are going to do they have six year long spending bills. but the spending bills have nothing in it for the border wall. that's the debate. the question then becomes with mitch mcconnell. mitch mcconnell has said, listen, i'm not going to put forward any bill that the president is going to veto. if the president says i'm not going to sign anything without border security and funding for the wall in it, we're going to be in this family for a while.

dean: impasse. pete: i don't know where it ends. democrats will say we are ready to end this shutdown we have spending bills ready to pass. that's fine. this is not the trump shutdown or schumer shutdown. it's the border shutdown. if that's what it's about border security. somebody has to move. you can propose all the bills you want without wall funding. it doesn't mean it's going to go anywhere. rachel: when you poll americans and ask them what do they think about the wall in the numbers aren't that great. 56% say they don't like that idea. if you say border security, the number goes. higher. so you know, i have been noticing that he and his spokes people keep saying border security, the slats, the wall, the bottom line is this the border patrol, the president met with the border patrol and the border patrol said this is what we need as part of border security we need a wall. listen to the president right now talking about that. fox news alert. if you don't have borders we don't have country. we don't want drug traffickers or human traffickers or illegal people with criminal records to come in.

our border patrol, our ice agents, our military, we have done great. you can never do it perfectly unless you have a wall. we have to have a wall as part of border security. pete: you know, i agree, obviously a lot of people who support the president do. it's really unclear who blinks first or where this goes. dean: it is unclear. it seems strange though for the layman sitting out there in the world who isn't always involved in politics like me it's over a $5 billion wall. it's not about $5 billion. it's about not giving him his way. pete: not a single win. r5eu67 rach we gave twice as much to mexico. they spent $700 billion on a boon dog stimulus bill that did nothing. so, didn't even create hardly any jobs. i can't believe it's about the money. dean: it ain't about the money. pete: it's not about the money. jillian is here with more. how was your new year's?

[shouting] jillian: police do not believe there is ongoing threat all three victims are expected to survive. the mom charged murder may have conspired to kill her. patrick frazee charged with killing kelsey berreth. she was last seen on thanksgiving. police believe she is dead. they have not found her body.

daily. feed your cells with centrum® micronutrients today. rachel: every new year comes new laws. last night hundreds of state and local measures which passed in 2018 went into effect. deep dean joining us now to break down a few laws that stand out. taxpayers union and center for a free economy maddy. what are we expecting in 2019? what's going on? >> good morning, you guys. and happy new year. as you mentioned with a new year comes a lot of new laws on the books. 19 states have passed a new mandatory minimum wage which, of course, in a booming economy, you can understand how lawmakers want to make sure that workers aren't left behind. but, of course, the problem with minimum wage and its proponents it's never the silver bullet that most of proponents think it is. rather than making labor

arbitrarily more expensive. states should be adopting laws to remove barriers to employment. employers say one of the biggest challenges they face is finding qualified workforce to fill open jobs. we have 7 million jobs open in this country right now. that's a lot of work to be done. by making labor more expensive, you will see at love states try to phase out those jobs perhaps go to auto mailings because workers become too expensive. i would like to see how those states adjust as those minimum wage laws get phased in. a couple other laws. rachel: continue, go ahead. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. a couple other laws interesting and play out. california always has interesting ideas. dean: there we go california, my state home state. >> beautiful state but public policy could use a little bit work sometimes. they mandated every publicly held company needs to have a woman on its board by the end of 2019. there is no question that we need more women in corporate leadership. but this is, to me, demonstrates the lack of

imagination on the left. what we need is support ecosystem that allows women executives to succeed. mandating that a woman needs to be on a board is not the way to go about that. i think it's really going to create disruption in some of these companies where have you leadership that in some cases have been there for years, has that institutional knowledge that is so important for some of these companies. and now it's not to say that women aren't in executive positions but data shows a lot of women are brought in after downturn in an economy to fix problems that have happened in publicly held companies. i would like to see more women to grow organically to scale businesses than to argue they need to start right at the top. rachel: where does that end other groups of people that can be added. dean: add this person here. rachel: tell us what's going on in illinois with goldible parachutes. >> it's not all bad. i should say that right away. i want to be optimistic in new year. illinois they have made it more difficult for public employees to get severance after being fired for a

fireable offense. you know, this is common sense here. illinois especially where the liability for public employees have been out of control. they are trying to create transparency in public employment. but also save taxpayer dollars. making sure that public employees can't continue to drink at the taxpayer trough after they have been fired from malfeasance. dean: mattie, i have a family of hunters in my family. they do wear their orange hunting clothes. what is changing in 2019? >> this is another good example of where illinois finally got something right. i'm from wisconsin. a lot of hunting going on there. maybe they will follow suit here. blaze pink is now okay for deer hunting in illinois. i'm happy to see blaze pink being introduced. rachel: wonderful new fashion tradition to the hunting gear. right on to them for that. >> exactly. rachel: thank you so much.

pete: much quiter rang in the new year. rachel: americans everywhere are embracing 2019. pete: they don't have a choice. dean: todd piro live in times square where a million people celebrated the new year. what's it look like now. it doesn't seem quite as lively as when pete was doing the job last night. todd: definitely not as lively. let me say happy new year to all three. we were savoring champagne. like five hours ago you were stapgding in this very spot. look how nicely new york

city cleans up. you can see a few little confetti remnants, if you will, but by and large over the course of the last three to four hours, they cleaned up the city. it's amazing what new york city sanitation can do. but, with that, take a look at how it all went down at the stroke of midnight. >> 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. [cheers] here in new york city the rainy weather didn't dampen the spirit of thousands. as the ball drops those celebrating were kept safe by hundreds of police officers, bomb sniffing dogs and security officers. revelers seemed to be thrilled with this year's weather thanks to temps in the 40s compared to last year when it was well below freezing. of course, nyc wasn't the only great party across the country.

involved. you know, you compare that to it's almost kind of creepy. pete: yeah, it is. >> low energy, devoid of anything that seems real whatsoever. it almost kind of reminds me, it's almost likes a if you, pete, this is the person you interviewed last night in times square. rachel: charlie, there was pressure on her to do. this because one of the things that alexandria ocasio-cortez has done very effectively is do these. she was making mac and cheese shortly after her election. and she was live instagraming this. and it was very effective. also beto o'rourke he was making slime with his kids and that went viral as well. she is trying to figure out how do i do this? and it just didn't work at all. >> you know, some people they may not know anything that they are talking about. at least they are very natural at this sort of stuff. the problem with somebody like elizabeth warren and let's be clear about this, you know, her campaign her entire political career has been sort of based on this sort of class warfare which

does not do well in american politics. when you look back at, say, john kerry and john edwards, their campaign was a disaster because it was all this class warfare nonsense. you look back at 2008 with somebody like president obama, he ran a very unifying campaign in 2008. all bets were off when he ran for re-election. but, these class warfare things don't do very well under any circumstances. they particularly aren't going to do well in a time like right now where you have the first uptick in wages in nearly a decade. pete: yeah. >> you have the lowest unemployment in history. and you have a guy in donald trump who, you can say what you want to about the guy, but, man, he really does have a pulse of the people and he is somebody who is not afraid to stand up for those people. and he will make any, you know, he will fight any fight he needs to fight on their behalf. pete: and be who he is. this guy flew to the iowa state fair in his own chopper in a suit. this is ohio am elect me or

not. >> exactly. pete: i had a chance to ask the president yesterday about elizabeth warren as his first perspective opponent. this is what he said. >> i'm happy about it. i think it's wonderful. i hope she gets the nomination that would be a wonderful thing for me. pete: do you really think she believes she can win. >> well, that, i don't know. you would have to ask her psychiatrist. but, honestly, i just, you know, if it's her or somebody else, when you look at what we have done, i don't think, if you go just based on the record, i don't see how anybody wins. pete: ask her psychiatrist. we got a request in psychiatrist, no answer yet. >> that authenticity donald trump spits this stuff out 10 times a minute. it's all very natural and obviously very offensive to some people. people get all upset about it it's very natural. you compare that authenticity to i'm going to go get a beer.

it's -- the juxtaposition is only to trump's advantage. dean: grab me a beer. charles, real quick, what will your top political predictions for 2019. >> first one will be the government shutdown will end and donald trump will claim credit for it another prediction will be that donald trump will come up with new nicknames. might come up with new nicknames for elizabeth warren and those people will not like that. but probably the most important prediction is chuck schumer is going to be driven up the wall by elizabeth warren and all the other democrats in the senate. running for president, jockeying to stakeout territory as far as left as they can go. basically mean that democrats are not going to be able to get anything done. nothing is going to happen in the next year out of washington. and but voters will be reminded of what it is like to have nancy pelosi at this ate top of the house assuming she can get the votes she

america first. not just parties. if you are putting the country first or workers first, you might come at issue like immigration or trade which you say you differ on tariffs. if your belief we are getting screwed in trade deals maybe you use tariffs as a vehicle for a balanced playing field. >> i would argue you don't yes. absolutely. definitely outlines of the mainstream position. pete: do you think the republican party is forever changed. folks that support trump see his view us more in him or the republican party? >> i do think they see it more aligned with him maybe he is reshaping what the party will represent going forward. for the time being he is donald trump and the party is something else entirely. pete: what is the democrat party today then? >> interesting. i see them as very reactive to him. i have written a lot they don't have any idea ideas.

they can't verbalize their own ideas say on immigration. are they for open borders? they can never ever say that they sort of just imply it or behave in a way that would lead you to believe they are for open borders. if you are for open borders, you lose. they are in a tough position where they are just like we are not donald trump. we oppose what he stands for. but we will never verbalize what we stand for ourselves. pete: i don't want to put words in your mouth. you don't strike me as someone who is pro-trump from the beginning. >> i'm not, no. again, i have a lot of problems with him. i think one of the things i really hate his tweeting. i hate the way he lashes out at people. that's made me check my own behavior to say i can't blame donald trump for my own behavior when i yell at somebody on twitter. it's not because of donald trump. a lot of the people blame him for their bad behavior. if we drank every time somebody blamed trump for their bad behavior we would be drunk for all of 2019. pete: you are saying on balance we're learning more

a lot of people who claim that it's not a smart move to go into politics also complain when they see dumb politicians. rachel: very, very true. >> i always enjoy that. rachel: i'm curious how you handle both of these. i have kids in high school they struggle just to keep up with their tests and finals. you must have had finals for high school and harvard at the same time. how did you manage it all? did you ever feel like giving up? >> well, i never necessarily felt like giving up but that's just because i had a really good support team. high school has been very nice to me. they really helped and i appreciate that. dean: i have an 18-year-old who is taking a gap year right now. going to college this year. what advice can you give my son so he can be more like you? >> just be yourself. make sure your education is yours. don't use any cookie cutter approach. individualize it. rachel: that is very, very good advice. so, you are very smart and you are a genius. but, we actually have something in common with

you. we both love ronald reagan. we are huge ronald reagan fans. aapparently you are, too. what do you love about ronald reagan your political hero? >> well, i think ronald reagan has always been a quintessential president that doesn't stir up the pot too much. with certain figures, you know, they are really high on one party's rating or really low on another's. ronald reagan didn't make any specific catering to one party or the other and i really appreciated that as, you know, as a nonpartisan person. dean: he was the great communicator, president reagan. he had serious one liner zingers he threw out there all the time. rachel: when you graduate from harvard when you are high school, what's next? what is in the very immediate future for you? >> well, i would really like to go to harvard law school. i think that's an achievable goal and see if i can make that a reality. dean: jump from graduating high school and harvard at 16 to maybe jumping into law

as, for the worker that, looking more at the value and the skillsets they're bringing to that position. dean: all right, greg, do you think increasing pay will actually make an employee more efficient? >> no, i don't think they become more efficient. i think a person has habits, and they have a personal constitution and they work by that regardless of their pay. dean: you talk a little bit about robotics. you were in a conference in germany looking at the robotics, do you think that will have big effect on some of these workers? >> i do. there is a large bakery convention, every year, i'm sorry, every three years in munich. i was attending that conference in september. one of the greatest advancements i saw was in robotics, not only technology, but also affordability of it. at some point in the future there will be intersection of

those affordable robotics with the minimum wage and i think that is going to cause some friction in the labor market. dean: see it all around the world. a lot of places where i see no people there, but i see robotics taking over. zane, how do you think this is going to affect the restaurant business? >> i think there will be huge consolidation within the space. restaurant business is in a little different state than the rest of the retail industry in that our margins are paper-thin, a, our maximum ticket in an applebee's, for instance, is 15, $18. so compare that to the retail space where you're selling an iphone for 500, a thousand dollars. obviously margin on a $1000 is a little better on 18, dollars, a. b, really good in terms of people that are working. there is no doubt there will be huge consolidation in the labor

market. i always say minimum wage increases are technology's best friend. dean: that brings in more and more robotics, am i wrong? >> not robotics, at the table ordering, pads, scrolling down, doing most of the tasks a server would ordinarily do, are moving more and more towards consumer. don't for get we buy gas, we swipe the card at gas pump. buy groceries at grocery store, hit our card on the groceries. when we pay our bills in a restaurant more and more, seeing swipe the card at the table. having said that, the restaurant business is unique because you go out to feel important. you need to be catered to. you need to have that warm, comfy feeling. so that it is always a battle between shrinking the labor market and continuing to provide that warm, fuzzy feeling people enjoy when they go out. dean: if someone is really good server or waiter, they get a higher tip and do better for

his numbers are pretty durable at 30%. that is higher than mitt romney had. >> i watch a lot of spanish news. that number is 99% negative against president trump and his administration. this is really an interesting poll. we heard analysts predicting there would be a some sort of latino backlash for some time. the fact that the support among latinos remains strong showing that the president is delivering on his promises. if you actually die sent who these voters are, who the supporters are, it tends to be evangelicals and veterans. president trump, he has delivered conservative judges. he has shown he is a strong supporter of our military, when it came to funding, just in general, his speech in the way that he respects our military, proves again that people voted for the right president. rachel: a lot of hispanics enter the military. my dad was one of then. by the way, evangelical voters hispanics is a very fast-growing

demographic within the hispanic community. so that makes sense. unemployment rates for hispanics have never been lower. these are historic numbers. one, hispanic community is feeling it. is donald trump getting credit he deserves? you say you watch a lot of hispanic television. i don't see him on there? >> he is is not getting credit he deserves. what we hear over and over again is that president trump is a racist. his administration is full of racists but they really have no facts to back this up. the idea he is a racist for wanting to enforce the immigration laws already on the books is totally ridiculous. if you think about it, legal immigrants in this country, they appreciate border security because legal immigrants came here the right way. illegal immigration hurts the latino community, it lowers wages, brings crimes into communities, overwhelms schools and hospitals. the list goes on and on. over all look what the administration has done, he is not just helping latinos, he is

is helping all americans. the economy is strong. a lot of his policies removing individual mandate on obamacare, that helped a lot of families. that was an expense latino families weren't expecting. just a stronger military, national security, all of these things help latinos and everyone. what democrats hate this idea that the gop continues to hold this 30% of support among latinos. they think they own latinos and hispanics but they don't. what really, really is frustrating to me, i feel like my fellow latinos and latinas are being duped by democrats. democrats continue to say the policies help the hispanic community. but i haven't seen one policy as of lately that would help the hispanic latino community. rachel: that's a good point of the my question is, what would you, if you were advising president trump, what would you say to him to grow that number from 30 up? believe me if that number grows any higher, suddenly the latino

vote is really, really competitive and game changer in 2020? >> president trump and his administration, republicans in general are up against the misinformation campaign out there. so they need to try harder to reach out to latinos, get their message out there and explain to them why their policies will help them and better their lives. i don't see a big enough effort from republicans. they say that they are doing a good job in that area, but i haven't seen it. rachel: they don't show up. >> they don't. rachel: let me ask you one last question, this is about the wall. would the president be better off if he talked less about the wall and more about the idea of border security, which is a lot more comprehensive? >> i don't know why the wall is so divisive. as daughter of an immigrant from mexico we love the idea of a wall. why? because the wall, it stops criminals from coming through and drugs, all of these other things. if he wants to focus on border

>> there was one brave palestinian who built a museum of the holocaust in palestinian territory to teach palestinians that there is no comparison between what they are experiencing and what happened in auschwitz and other places. i made a point of taking each of my three children to the death camps and showing them a where our family came from, our whole family aside from my grandfather's branch of the family was killed. we went to the town where they were killed. we saw the story of a 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy who were murdered in cold blood. it has an impact and makes you want to prevent anything like that from happening in the future. and it is so important for young people to be exposed to this. >> rachel: you don't have to go to auschwitz. you can watch a documentary and go to the holocaust museum. you need to make an effort. it is not being taught in

school. 9/11 isn't being taught enough in school. they aren't learning about stalin. a lot of things going on in public schools. it is incumbent on parents to take the lead on this. >> parents are the key to a child's education. if it isn't being done in the school it has to be done at home. history is prologue. what happened in the past is prologue to the future. if we really want never again to become a reality we have to teach our students what actually happened and how american democracy, no matter where you stand on the current president, bears no relationship to what happened in germany in the 1930s. >> pete: you wrote the case against impeaching trump. your prediction in 2019 on that front. >> i think there will be some democrats trying to move toward impeachment. unless dramatic new evidence comes out, which i don't see happening, i don't think there will be an impeachment of this president or removal of him. he will end his term. does he get reelected.

two years of republican control. the wall never fully funded. the last opportunity here. it's an earnest question if donald trump sticks to his guns and democrats stick to theirs and say no border wall funding, how does it play out? >> the good news is the president has already signaled to democrats he isn't stuck on $5 billion and they can be creative in the deal that they come back with. the president is transactional. he is not an ideologue. he wants it done because it's in america's best interest. if you can't make a deal with donald trump, you can't make a deal. donald trump knows this. he won't be had. he won't negotiate against himself. it's up to democrats to come in good faith and if they do, there will be a deal. >> pete: do you think democrats start to look like the obstinate wonder and start to lose the public optics. they were on vacation, not move from zero dollars. at some point they have to realize they look like the problem. >> absolutely. as long as the president sticks

to his principles he will win this. the american people believe that america should have secure borders. any sovereign nation must be able to protect itself and its borders. >> pete: brad blackman your prediction. does this gridlock end? if so, what does it look like? >> i think the gridlock will end and it will end by the president sticking to his principles and a deal will be made. maybe sooner rather than later but you know what? these shutdowns are a stunt anyway, pete. the longest they've ever gone is a month. they're usually settled in a couple of days. maybe the president has to teach them a lesson that shutting down government has consequences. >> pete: near-term pain but people get their pay. thank you very much for joining us. happy new year's. all right. well, on a totally different
