>> reporter: nancy pelosi did not waste much time, just hours after reclaiming the speaker's gavel she had democrats pushed through a funding measure to end the partial government shutdown but it did not include funding for the border wall. >> we are diligent, diligent and persistent trying to open up government. as i said today on the floor we will take ideas, good ideas from wherever they come including the idea of appropriations bills passed by the republicans in the united states senate. >> reporter: open to ideas she says. that doesn't include border wall funding but mitch mcconnell says the democratic bill is dead on arrival in the senate and the president made clear from the white house briefing room that he's not backing down. >> you can call it a barrier or whatever you want but we need protection in our country.

gunshot to the head. 7 people did including children in a massive highway inferno, several other second of the hospital some with critical injuries. police say two tractor-trailers and two vehicle smashed into each other outside gainesville, florida. 50 gallons of fuel spread onto the roadway and that ignited a fireball. it is not clear who was at fault. a terrible scene. jillian: a decorated navy seal will be arranged today for the killing of a young ice is fighter in iraq. edward gallagher is facing court-martial for premeditated murder at a naval base in san diego accused of killing 13 in 2017 after a -- iraqi forces turned him over to navy seals. he denies all charges and will plead not guilty today. of convicted he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

want the money for the border wall and nancy pelosi yesterday saying maybe one dollar for the wall? >> i think she is being a little bit facetious when she says that, i certainly hope that. the american people certainly once congress to work a deal out with the president and i think the president is on the right track. all we have to do is look at the recent situation in california where ronil singh, a legal immigrant serving the people of the state of california as a police officer is guns down by an illegal alien. a criminal alien. within the last month, we had other incidences in the state of california where illegal criminals, people in this country with no reason to be here, have committed serious, violent fences against citizens

rob: what are the best films? kevin mccarthy joins us with his predictions and we start with best actor and actress in a drama. >> reporter: the cool thing about the golden globes as they divide into musical comedy and drama. i will say i like it in one category with the oscars, giving of the the chance to be nominated. in this category i'm going with a star is born. bradley cooper, for a star is born and lady gaga as an actress in the drama category, on my will win and should win for this category, bradley cooper disappeared in this role, absolutely brilliant in the role as is lady gaga. anyone who says she's playing herself, the complete opposite of who she is which is a nervous singer at the beginning of the film, that is the whole concept of a star is born. i love this film and that is my will win should win in the drama

category. jillian: my goal is to watch that among many others. what about actors or actresses in a musical comedy? >> this is a big difference. christian bale and olivia coleman take-home the award from i will win. christian bail playing dick cheney and vice and olivia coleman in the favorite, that will happen with the will win should win. should win on the other side of things, bail deserves to win the award but i went to see elsie fisher in this movie eighth grade when the award for best actress in a musical comedy but olivia coleman will take it at the end of the day but i hope for surprise elsie fisher. if you haven't seen a great, one of the most incredible films of the year, very small independent film touching on the reality of what it is like to be in middle school. really well done film. rob: what about best director?

>> this category, great year for movies because a lot of popular films that made a lot of money in the box office being nominated. in this category, alfonso cuaron will win for his film that is on netflix, bradley cooper deserves this award, what he did for his directorial debut was absolutely brilliant but i think it the end of the night alfonso will go home. if you haven't seen his movie children of men or gravity, highly recommend those. rob: roma look so boring. all his movies have been great. >> i understand where you're coming from. it is a hard sell, black and white, subtitled, i totally get that but if you can dedicate 2 hours and 15 minutes and sit down and watch it, it takes patience, i understand that but

it is a very rewarding experience but i get where you are coming from. jillian: best picture musical comedy? >> this category i am interested to see what will happen. right now i will say my will win in this particular category, the favorite to take home the award for best picture musical comedy of the night, my will win should win. i am cheating here, green book could sneak in, a great film with the go mortensen, directed by peter fairly. at the end of the night because of the star power of the favorite and olivia coleman i can see the favorite taking home best musical picture comedy in that category. my will win should win but cheating a little bit don't be surprised. rob: we are running out of time. best picture, what do you think?

rob: donald trump called the family of falling california police officer ronil singh, sharing his condolences as newly released documents paint a picture of what happened after his cold-blooded killing. jillian: alicia joins us from california with how the family is saying goodbye to the lost officer.

>> reporter: donald trump making a tough phone call reminding officer ronil singh's family of their hero in blue. sarah sanders saying, quote, the president praised ronil singh's service to his fellow citizens, offered condolences and commended law enforcement's investigation response and apprehension of the suspect. the man charged in ronil singh after that stopping at his home after the alleged murder and covered his truck with plywood. police say gestapo gustavo perez arriaga shot and killed ronil singh during a traffic stop it after crisis. gustavo perez arriaga has been living in the us illegally since crossing the border. family and friends preparing to say goodbye to ronil singh in their community. from the us to fiji to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer.

position and many democrats including schumer and nancy pelosi and obama signed the secure fencing act of 2006 which calls for a 700 mile barrier fence, wall, whatever you want to call it. i find this disheartening because there is no goodwill on the part of the democrats to actually resolve this issue. it is not just an important problem for america. it is a real problem. yesterday donald trump called on senior people who work for border patrol to come to the press conference and talk about securing the border with a wall or a fence and those people's lives are on the line but democrats of gone further and further left on this issue, more welcoming of illegal immigration and conflating the two and that is not acceptable. jillian: let me ask you this back and forth about the wall. what do you think this does to the public perception of both

parties right now? >> we elect these people to legislate. the white house and congress, the fact that this is an open wound for this country for so many decades is appalling to people. when there is an event like the caravan approaching the border or the murder of a police officer in california everybody in the country stands back and says we are able law nation, how are we allowing undocumented people who are criminals to enter, convicted more than once of criminal offense, to stay in this country? sanctuary cities are outrageous and dangerous. this is a time donald trump is being very hard-nosed about not caving on his wall. he said it could be a barrier, a fence, there's wiggle room but he's completely right that we have to protect our country and there are tens of thousands of

people coming across the border that slipped through now and detected. not as though our borders are secure, democrats say the borders are fine, they are not. jillian: let's look at measures to move the country forward. that includes building the wall, make e-verify mandatory, scrapped diversity visa programs, daca is a topic of conversation, reach legal status and rationalize the visa programs. >> we have problems. we need work is in the hospitality industry and agriculture so let's make sure we have enough of those workers. right now we do not. e-verify is very important because it works, it is a free government service, very reliable and most people in the country illegally overstay their visas. the wall will not prevent that. e-verify would because it prevents people from earning a living. we need to resolve the daca issue. these are hundred of thousands of young people in the country, the only country they have known, they should have certain hurdles they have to jump and

wasting our hard-earned taxpayer dollars. it ended up happening this was money that was spent during the obama administration that was finally used so that was an obama administration problem and here's the tweet from jake silverstein, editor in chief of the new york times magazine. this link going around from 2014, this was about the pictures of the kids in the cages. this one, if you remember, another big outrage over the children in the cages, trump administration keeping kids in cages and they showed the picture, the picture went viral and that was from 2014. there is the picture right there. we have come his examples, you go back. the outrage over president obama, using tear gas at the border, they did under obama, so many examples.

>> there are a lot of examples. the funny part of these is 2 million people, their subscribers the read the new york times see this and retractions seen by less viewers, less people that originally saw those stories, those retractions are harmful and cause more division in this country because simply put they are not doing their job of accurate reporting. rob: in all fairness the president says terrible things about the media quite often, things people in this business including many of us in any part of the business here and anywhere else don't like. but has the president baited the media into causing and inflicting on themselves irreparable harm? the media went down to his level a lot of ways. what do you think? >> a lot of ways, the reason he

is fighting this is they failed to cover him at least fairly. obviously there's a level of bias that goes into all the coverages. rob: do you think he made the coverage of him worse by being so critical of the media, he made them get even worse and cost them a lot of their reputation? >> sure. at times they have. they have gone after him, that his administration hasn't even had a hand in. you mentioned some examples and in my opinion caused a reputation in at least three times to sink a little bit. you see those episodes of bias that have gone on and i believe it caused their reputation to sink a little bit. rob: makes you wonder what will happen to the news media when
