a market research is essential. i think people cleaning up our national parks is essential. these are things that we actually need so this shutdown has nothing to do with large government versus small government. this has to do with responsible government, so i think we really need to, you know, reexamine that and actually fund our government fully. ed: so michael can he actually make the case that picking up the trash at the national parks that's essential? >> no, for anything that should be done that's not could be done by the states. why is the federal government employing anyone that's deemed non-essential? everyone watching now has had to cut spending, cut non-essential spending in their lives. every business owner watching now has had to fire non- essential employees. it's hard but it has to happen. the federal government needs to be smaller so where should we start? i don't know how about the people who are self-described non-essential? they never should have had a job in the first place and maybe positions in the first place i think we should get rid of them. ed: let's look at what's actually open.

the u.s. post office, the fbi, the border patrol, coast guard medicare/medicaid social security you're still getting your checks, federal court is open, food stamps, military, we've seen the military was already fully funded, in fact robert mueller's russia probe is going on so democrats are worried about that and public transportation and security as well, tsa agencies like that, so jason, here is what i don't understand. will you at least admit that government since we have a partial government shutdown and we haven't really heard kicking and screaming and yelling that oh, my gosh we just simply can't move on. should the federal government at least go on a diet? >> [laughter] well i would say first of all, i think there needs to be a little bit of an asterisk by military. i mean, we're still dealing with the coast guard. some members of congress are trying to fix that and so that the coast guard gets funded but they are members of our military even though they fall under homeland security. i definitely think that perhaps there are areas where, you know,
