steve: thank you very much, griff. it was good candy. according to john thune who was in the room. apparently it was skittles. it was butter fingers and baby ruth. things started out sweet but then turned sour. the president made sure everybody had coffee. he said i appreciate all the work everybody has done on this. the meeting should probably take about 45 minutes. nancy pelosi immediately said mr. president, you need to open up the government. and then mr. pence stepped in and said we're going to talk about that but keep in mind, democrats, we have given you a number of things you have wanted. you have wanted steel barrier. we are going to give you the steel barrier. we are giving you a change in infrastructure at our ports of entry and make it easier for people to apply for asylum in other nations. and then the president said this in a tweet which summarized the balance of the meeting. ainsley: he said just left the meeting with chuck and nannies. a total waste of time i asked what's going to happen in 30 days if i quickly open things up. are you going to approve border security which includes a wall or steel

barrier nancy said no. i said bye-bye, nothing else works. brian: think about it the president has just for the first time can you honestly say i would be proud to shut the government down saying it's a trump shutdown. he just called them out. because they have been saying we don't want to talk about this. we will talk about it but open the government for now and we will fund homeland security for two weeks. wait a second, if we are talking about it, at least put all this stuff on the table so we could potentially fail or succeed. she says no. that's off the table. if it's off the table why are we wasting our time here? now all reversed. it even got so bad cher is out. now, in terms of the president, in terms of the president of the united states, if you look at what he wrote, and if you look at what he tweeted in the past, we might have a clue to his tactics. ainsley: part of the negotiation. many people are asking in washington is he going to budge? everyone in d.c. is saying no he is not. this is part of what he does. part of his tactics. get the deal done. steve: when you think about he famously wrote the book

"the art of the deal." and in the "art of the deal" it talks 'sometimes in the negotiation have you got to say bye-bye and walk away. and he has tweeted just that in july of 2011 he said no when to walk away from the take. the art of the deal. in may of 2014. negotiations 101. the best deals you can make are the ones you walk away from and then get them with better terms. in 2014, in october of that year, young entrepreneurs always remember in negotiations that sometimes the best deal you make is the one you walk away from. but, keep in mind, and i think people are starting to realize this. only half of the people in the room are negotiating. brian: right. steve: the president is negotiating. he has an ultimate goal and that is to build a wall at least or a fence or a barrier, something like that. is he giving to the democrat what they wanted. first time out. they complained about okay, you can't make it concrete, okay, i'm going to make it steel. we will make a steel barrier. they asked for other things, they gave it to him. what are they willing to do

can't make a deal with people that are unreasonable. ainsley: he said he could declare a state of emergency to authorize the wall on his own. he says he doesn't want to have to do it. he wants to work with the democrats. he wants to reach a deal. he called the federal employees to continue to go up paid. he called them different patriots. a lot of them agree with me. they want security in our country. john eastman a constitutional law professor at chapman university he said the president can do that. listen. >> the national emergencies act gives him the power to declare a national emergency. every president since that act was passed has used it. president barack obama used it declare a national emergency over the swine flu. i think what's going on on the border clearly qualifies. the president can redeploy moneys already authorized for military construction projects in furtherance of the national emergency effort he has declared. i mean, you know, the statute is very clear. steve: it is very clear. the more most sides are dug. in white house officials confidentially are saying

this is probably the option he is going to take. we have been telling you that for a number of days. he knows if he tries to declare a national emergency on our southern border and that's why he is going down today. that's the case he has been making since the oval office address a couple nights ago. his intent is to reprogram the department of defense money. $5 billion. apparently they have already found it he also knows that the democrats will immediately challenge him in court. just like the daca deal. and so he expects that but then he would be able to reopen the government and then tell his supporters look, i did everything i could. if you want a clear victory, elect more republicans to the congress. brian: it would just be a disaster in the big picture and just show us being inept and govern around the world and set a terrible precedent that would continue as. eric: son brought up. look, the next president, if it is a liberal president will say a state of emergency will be climate change. look at what happened with

sandy. look at what happened with the earthquake. look at what's happening to the polar bears who have no place to walk on ice. steve: right. brian: this would be a bad sign that the courts are forced to do something that politicians can't. and that is come up with solutions to problems. ainsley: the authorities down in mexico recognize it's a problem there in their country as well. you always talk about the southern border down there. there are 12 legal ports of entry at the southern side of mexico where it borders guatemala and belize. authorities down there are identified 370 additional illegal ports of entry. so it's not just a problem in our country. a problem down there, too. brian: definitely not buying property in belize which is offensive advertised on our channel until we can work this out. steve: 6:10 in new york city jillian joins us on this thursday with a fox news alert. jillian: thursday, 10th day in the new year and already attacks on our police officers. get to this fox news alert. one cop is dead, another is fighting for his life after two separate shootings.

right now, the number on the left is $86,000 over the lifetime a single illegal crosser. totals $16.4 billion each year. right? >> yes. that's right. so, if you take all the taxes they pay in their lifetime and all the services they use, that would be it. about $82,000 in net deficit. it's based on their education levels and then some other research that's looked at imhe grants and their impact by education. steve: why does education level make a difference? >> because people who are border crossers tend to have very modest levels of education. overwhelmingly they didn't graduate high school in their home country or have only a high school education. and all the research shows people who come with modest levels of education don't make much money so they don't tend to pay that much in taxes and tend to use a lot in services. not because they are lazy or all on welfare, it reflects the reality of the economy and what you earn when you

don't have an education. >> did you calculate as well the offset of whether or not they pay taxes so, you know, if they pay a turne certain amot of taxes through their employer or whatever through the course of a year or years, then that would give you a lower number. >> right, no, no. we do. actually the national academy of sciences research is a net figure. it's all the taxes they pay minus all the services and costs they create. so it is a net figure. it's not just the services they use with no taxes. it includes both. steve: 82,000. we know there are thousands down in tijuana area waiting to come into this country so that's going to be a lot of money. of the 82,000 per migrant who comes into this country illegally, who pays that? >> well, it's actually divided between the federal, state, and local level. in fact, the biggest cost often are at the state and local level whether it's providing for infrastructure, education,

emergency medical services, things like that. often it's the state and local governments get hit the most. steve: the president got hammered over the last 48 hours from democrats and some members in the mainstream media saying he has manufactured a crisis. when you look at politico morning consult poll that we have got on the big screen, 42% of americans say it is a crisis. 37% say it's not a crisis. 12% not a problem at all. steven camerota, you study this every day. is there a crisis at our southern border? >> maybe it's up to your listeners. half a million people try to sneak into the united states right now between the ports of entry. we think several hundred thousand people make it every year between the ports of entry. in addition to that we have record numbers of people presenting themselves at the ports of entry. look no right to come in. applying for asylum and if they have children we release those people. the scale is certainly enormous. steve: indeed it is, steven cam rot tax thank you very much. >> thanks for having me.

can it. >> very easy to explainu pay foy democrats have been so excited about talking about this on the campaign trail. they have been very short on details on how we afford a 32.6 trillion-dollar program. i would point out, too. that's not just an estimate from the left leaning urban institute assessed the cost of this program. they thought it would cost $3 trillion as well. that's for two reasons. medicare for all would expand healthcare coverage. that's not just healthcare that's dental, hearing and vision for everyone. and it would be for all our coverage. that means that the consumer doesn't pay at all for healthcare services. the government covers every single dollar of healthcare cost. obviously that is enormous undertaking for the federal government. $32 trillion probably understates the full cost of this program because it relies on some pretty aggressive assumptions for that to be true. ainsley: mattie according to the fraser institute in canada last year the average

person had to wait nearly five months to get in to see a specialist. what would it look like here in america? >> right. that's why those assumptions are so important. when not only trying to calculate the cost but also how you would implement this in the united states. medicare for all proponents say it would decrease cost because of efficiencies you would buy in the administrative stated with the government administering all healthcare. i disagree. there is probably going to be a lot more costs involved here than proponents would want to acknowledge. first it assumes that private providers will take a 40% reimbursement rate cut off the bat that shows you why exactly why in canada you are experiencing shortages on care all of a sudden providers have to almost cut in half what they were paid for those services. brian: you are not going to have people that want to be a doctors with a cut rate with huge student loans. that's going to be a major issue. the other thing is it would kill obamacare. medicare for all blows up the obamacare formula which was working for very few.

>> this is the irony for me democrats embracing medicare for all so overtly. this is a complete rejection of them by obamacare which they put into place. very interesting what house democrats regaining control of that gavel. of course, their banner achieve when they chamber blasting obamacare with only democrat votes. essentially this is admitting by democrats that obamacare doesn't work. but rather than trying to dial back a lot of the intervention that obamacare implemented into the private marketplace, democrats are saying we need more government intervention that's the way to fix the problems of obamacare. i certainly disagree with that statement. ainsley: according to politico and harvard 80% of democrats want this medicare for all. is that a winning message? >> also, you will see polling that says that americans, democrats and republicans want obamacare to be fixed. so i think democrat politicians right now are really benefiting from trying to fix the system that they essentially broke. the question, of course, is how do you actually make changes that help consumers rather than continuing to

this shutdown. the president says it's a crisis. we need a border wall. what do you make of the showdown right now? >> i feel it's necessary. i mean, we have to have some kind of bargaining chip for him to be able to have congress listen. pete: so you have been through shutdowns and not paid during those times. you got back pay but ultimately you think it's useful, a moment like this in order to make something happen? >> absolutely. this is nothing new. we have had 20 shutdowns with various presidents. pete: even this with a marshall shutdown, does it make it even more of an opportunity to make something happen? >> yes. absolutely. because somebody is being affected by it and it's getting covered and they are having to sit down and listen. pete: they are creating a moment. a political opportunity. jim, the president will be about two hours -- we are in south texas. he will be two hours south. south texas is a big place in mcallen. >> yes, it is. pete: what do you hope he sees and what will he see on the border? >> i hope he sees we are in dire need. and the country is able to

see we are in dire need of security, of border security. we definitely need that wall. we definitely need something to keep people out undesirables that don't need to be here. and that come in our country with the wrong reasons. and we want immigrants, of course, but we want them to come through and come in legally. pete: why are chuck and nannies saying that it would be ineffective or even immoral, nancy pelosi claims the wall? >> you know, the only - only-une most people i have heard on the news, i think they are doing that because they can and they are trying to make president trump look bad. i honestly think that's what it is. i think this country has such a bitter taste in its mouth because trump was elected still a lot of people feel that way which i think was crazy. i have wasn't crazy about obama but i supported him. he was my president. i stood up and said yeah he is my president i'm proud to say that i didn't agree with his politics. but, yeah. i mean, i just think they hate the guy so much they

government and then, as it makes its way through courts, he will be able to tell his supporters, look, these democrats would not negotiate an inch. i got as much as i could. and then ultimately he will say if you want a different result, elect republicans to congress next time. brian: again, that's the perpetual campaign world that we're living in. everyone wants an issue to get elected. when we asked -- actually want them to govern. i think it's time for these leaders to step aside. it's too personal. pelosi, the president, the vice president should step aside and turn it over to some level-headed people in the senate or even in the house to start negotiating going forward. it's not personal for them. they want to get something done. you put lindsey graham with dick durbin and joe manchin and lisa murkowski and try to put something forward. steve: they did it at the staff level over the weekend and nothing got done. brian: the staffs were told don't give in on the wall. the first thing i'm going to tell you is we are not

massive amounts of death here and if we don't change the strategic landscape on the ground, less guard duty, more control and sorting, channel at controlled ports of entry, we will continue to have unbelievable and historic carnage of death from drugs alone. brian: so, when the answer is, when democrats come back and say it's the port of entries that are the major issue, they are not coming across where there is no wall and barrier. your answer is, wait a second, the barrier funnels people in allowing us to focus on the port of entry. and what urks me even more they know this. politics on drugs and on the border is killing people. >> yeah. you have to change the strategic situation so you can focus your people and your analysis at a controlled area of the port of entry to sort the bad things, the drugs, the crime from the good things that we want to have as trade and exchanges. right now we have thousands and thousands of people on guard duty between the ports of entry because we don't have fixed barriers.

why is it bad to be masculine. >> it's not. this is what is dangerous about this report. political theory nothing to do with science and bigotry there is a suggestion that masculinity and that would mean all men because you are dealing with the issue of testosterone the nature of what it is to be male, are prone to violence or homophobia or sexual violence or harassment. women can be violent. women do sexual harassment: it's remarkable pathology that they are using for these are guidelines to all other psychologists saying that when you treat men and boys, you should presume that they are suffering from an illness. and it's also interesting that they are using the phrase traditional masculinity which implies that it's taught. that it's not the very nature of men. and, of course, i would think that scientists would disagree when you are dealing with the impact of estrogen and testosterone

there is a manliness and masculinity that's involved. let me tell you the things they are complaining about, if we didn't have men's courage and aggressiveness, and focus and determination, we would still be living in caves right now. so, you have modern world is, the result of the male framework of wanting to move forward and create things. and it is, i think, obscene and everyone should complain that those attributes of men are being determined to be negative and something that is either a sickness or a mental illness or wrong or even artificial. this is the liberal, political ideology of arguing about gender fluidity. we can have that argument. it's not a zero sum game. you don't -- in order to liberate men who don't fit within, let's say, a cultural norm, you don't need to obliterate every other man in that process. ainsley: the irony here, too. this is a psychological association. >> right.

ainsley: they are saying if you are masculine, you are homophobic. if you are masculine, you are suppressing your emotions. you are a bully. it could lead to sexual harassment. it could lead to violence. that's a stereotype. >> exactly. it's using a gender stereotype. not just in order to accomplish that, but then there would be apparently gender stereotypes on how they are viewing women. they are viewing women in a singular, you know, one road way of how people behave. ainsley: if you are traditionally feminine is that a bad thing? >> i would argue though that this argument that our attributes are tradition is absurd on its face. historically, no matter what country you come from, no matter from the beginning of homosamians, there is a framework of what the how we perceive ourselves. in the modern world we have some flexibility about individualism and our process. up until only 1974 did the same group remove

steve: social media giants like facebook and twitter under fire for alleged political bias and censorship against conservatives are turning to conservatives on the political right on how to police online content. ainsley: that's exactly right. facebook even reached out to our next guest. brian: tony perkins is president of the family research council and joins us now. tony, great to see you. the beard was a surprise. i'm willing to roll with it. it looks great. what was your reaction when they reached out to you. >> well, i will have to say i was actually -- i read this story. i was in egypt earlier this week. read the story. i was a bit surprised that i was described as consulting with facebook. i do think social media world has a different definition of terms. you never have a conversation with somebody or meet them they are your friends. if they read your post of 280 characters they are a

follower. now if you have a phone conversation you are a consultant. i've had one conversation with facebook. obviously they are in trouble as many conservatives understand that they are censoring conservative speech and the free flow of conservative ideas online. ainsley: tell us about the conversation. what did you say to them? what were your recommendations and what did they say to you? >> well, i said they do have a problem. there is a great concern among conservatives we saw a example of this couple weeks ago during christmas my friend franklin graham had a 2-year-old post removed for a 24-hour period they said it was an accident. one of the things i communicated was that, you know, these accidents appear more and more frequently. either they are failing to use the technology that they are promoting or there is an intent here to sketch conservative ideas and free flow of information. steve: tony, when these accidents happen and we talk

♪ ainsley: an oklahoma father is counting his blessings after his pickup goes up in flames a few feet away from his house as you can see. no one thankfully was injured in the incident. it happened a few weeks before christmas. the family finding a sign of hope however, from the wreckage. the man's childhood bible was left pretty much unscathed inside of the truck. joining us is the truck's owner. steve gott. good morning to you. >> good morning. ainsley: tell us what happened? two weeks before christmas, you looked out the window, how did

you discover your truck was on fire? >> actually i was, we went out to the garage to put some gifts away, that way the kids wouldn't know that we had bought them, and one of the kids came out to the garage and hollered that the truck was on fire and horn was blowing. i came out of the garage, looked like the house was on fire. so you know, i wayne sure what was going on. i ran out there, and sure enough the truck was on fire. ainsley: so what did you do? how did you put the fire out? >> well you know, at first we wasn't sure what to do. i went to go grab the fire extinguisher, come to find out my son had extinguished it three weeks before. ainsley: oh, no. >> so i had to call 911. and they came out pretty quick. ainsley: and they doused the whole truck with water. and steve what happens. what did you find? you found your bible?
