concerned about the mueller investigation and a previous memo he wrote about it. >> i believe it's vitally important that the special counsel be allowed to complete his investigation. i believe it's in the best interest of everyone, the president, congress, and the american people, that this matter be resolved by allowing the special counsel to complete his work. i wrote the memo as a former attorney general who has often weighed in on legal issues of public importance and i distributed broadly so other lawyers would have the benefit of my views. my memo was narrow, explaining my thinking on a specific obstruction of justice theory under a single statute that i thought, based on media reports, the special counsel might be considering. >> dana: despite clearly laying out his stance, democrats tried to hammer him on the same issue. >> doesn't look like like a job

anybody, whether it be editorial boards or congress or the president. i'm going to do what i think it's right. >> dana: i want to play this other sound that was caught off camera of senator dianne feinstein. >> so you see this is a pretty easy road for him heading to confirmation? >> i think so. we'll see. >> dana: i think she is reading the tea leaves. looks like a confirmation that might sail through. >> greg: interesting. i get all the interest in the investigation but it's amazing how the media and the democrats are following the same script. super obsessed with how this will impact mueller. if an asteroid came and wiped out half the united states, the most -- the lead on msnbc and cnn will be how does this impact the mueller probe? there are 150 million people dead but we need to know more about the mueller probe.

every question is how are you going to do with donald trump? a boils down to this: we hate drum. you like trump? we hate you too. he's not applying for eeg. he's applying to gain entrance into the donald trump hate club. he's got to say all the right things. i believe there is a tree house out back with a secret knock. >> dana: you have a nominee who is already been the attorney general before and when the senators were not referring to him as barr, they would say general. it's the title and you hold it for the rest of your life. he was almost in semiretirement. willing to be a public servant. how do you think it went? >> jesse: i think it went really well and juan would agree with me. i believe he handled the senators deftly. it was not a jeff sessions situation. he was very smooth and very direct. everything he said was based on

law. when he was asked what would you base a recusal on, he said the facts. it stopped a few senators in their tracks. they don't want a number as ag. they want a weak ag, someone who's going to recuse at the slightest whiff of controversy and someone is going to treat mueller like a god. i think he straddled it well. if something's going to happen, i will deal with it but i'm not going to abdicate my responsibility as ag. i'm going to be a strong attorney general. he also said in the memo that comey deserved to be fired and mueller going after an obstruction case against the president was on weak legal ground and mueller shouldn't have stacked his team with democrats. and he said, and i think this caught president trump's attention, there's a lot of reasons to go after hillary, uranium one and things like that, more than to go after

trump-russia collusion in 2016. >> dana: not uranium one again again. speaking of president trump meeting with bill barr, he was asked about that. let's play it and we will get juan to react. >> the president wanted to know. how well do you know bob miller. i told him bob is a straight shooter and should be dealt with as such. he said something to the effect like so are you envisioning some role here? i said actually, mr. president, right now i couldn't do it. my personal and my professional obligations are such that i'm unable to do it. >> dana: juan, in another exchange, mr. barr said he does not believe bob miller would ever be involved in a witch hunt. do you think democrats will be satisfied with his hearing today? >> juan: no. to me, this is about trump wants to control the justice department.

i think that's why he forced out jeff sessions, who was a trump loyalist but had recused himself. i think the standards, dana, for the democrats was if the ethics officials come to you and say mr. attorney general, we think you should recuse yourself, will you abide by their findings? he said no. he said he would go with his own sense of whether or not he should be recused. similarly and i think this is the big point, it's not a matter of the hate anybody club. there was a question of whether or not he will release the mueller report. he said you know what, the way that we deal with, i think they are called declination memos where they declined to prosecute somebody, he said we don't talk about them. so we may not release all of it. guess what, the polls are pretty clear on this. a majority of americans say his number one job should be release whatever mueller finds. don't cover it up. don't let giuliani edit it. put it out there for the american people and he refuses

to say it. >> dana: there have been republican senators who said they also want that report to be public. it will be the attorney general's decision. >> katie: it's been a big topic of conversation for the country for the last two years. it should be released in full as much as possible, but he didn't say he wasn't releasing it for reasons of personal, political purposes or because the president doesn't want it release. he referred back to the rules and regulations that are in the justice department when it comes to releasing reports like this. one thing i can't today i found interesting is i think there was a bit of a missed opportunity because everything was so focused on russia that all of these other issues kind of got ignored. for example, there were questions today about bill barr's role as attorney general in the 1990s. there's a reason why violent crime and murder in america today has been cut in half. it's a result of a lot of the policies that they put into place. as you have cory booker and kamala harris and president trump pushing forward with criminal justice reform, he

did a good job of saying i'm not going to apologize for the things we did in the 1990s to bring down the crime across cities in america. at the same time, i'm open to the idea that maybe we can pull back on some of those policies now that we've solved a lot of the problem in places like new york and washington, d.c., chicago came up in one place where it hasn't been solved. that's an issue that's going to be ongoing for the next ten, 20 years. >> dana: he also said he would not target marijuana. the laws and mess with what the states are trying to do. that's a good thing. >> greg: i guess it's a good thing. that was the other problem with sessions. he wasn't going to go for it. that's the direction of the country. i do agree that we have to be really careful about talking about how great this police reform is going to be. the facts are the facts. we saw dramatic reduction in crime, and that had something to do with policies that we are now kind of say maybe we don't need

them anymore. that's the thing that always happens. after something works, we all started thinking maybe we don't need it anymore. like walls. we don't need any walls anymore. >> jesse: he was very strong on border security. he said he supported barriers where they were necessary and he was also very against sanctuary cities. i thought everybody watching should be pretty pleased with this guy. >> juan: i will say from the democrats perspective, he is not matt whitaker. so you know what. >> dana: maybe that was the strategy all along. all right, new caravan with 2,000 migrants now heading for our southern border. the latest on the president battle for border security next. i know that every single time that i suit up, there is a chance that's the last time.

♪ >> juan: it is day 25 of the partial government shutdown over border wall funding, with the president pointing to a new migrant caravan on its way from honduras heading toward the usa. meanwhile, new push from the president for border security. he tweeted the following: "a drone flying around will not stop them. only a wall will work." democrats declining trump's invitation to the white house today, a small group. he wanted a working lunch with democrats and republicans to try to solve a crisis. while neither side is budging, the senate has created a gang of 20 people -- ten republicans and ten democrats -- who are intent on trying to resolve the issue. jesse, today i was thinking to myself, we've seen the president talk about this new caravan.

we've also seen him talk about yesterday the hispanic caucus retreat in puerto rico. and then you had him sharing an article by an anonymous senior administration official saying these government workers are not loyal. they are not good people. he is on a campaign, but the polls don't seem to move. >> jesse: well, i think he's winning the argument on the logic of the wall. that's pretty clear, that walls work. you had obama's chief border patrol agent say that walls wor work. jim acosta accidentally prove that walls work. the country get that. but the problem is is that he took ownership of the shut down a month ago. the democrats are just going to wait him out because they believe they have the politics on their side. on the caravan, i talked to our chief caravan correspondence griff jenkins. he said it's about 1,000 or 2,000 strong. by friday or saturday, it's

the wall by the president? >> katie: i don't think that caravan is a publicity stunt by the president. i think they're making this journey because they believe democrats are going to allow them to come in because they don't believe in walls and they don't believe in any kind of of the structure to stop them from coming in. they are getting impatient and jumping the border wall, what we have of it, anyway. by the way, people who come to this country legally are also inpatient but they do it and it takes the time and it takes 5 t. if you listen to the dhs, i.c.e. agents and border patrol agents, these caravans are violence. it's the kind of violence they haven't seen before in the new incoming mexican president is actually looking to put more barriers on the southern border with mexico to stop this. >> jesse: that's amoral, katie. how dare they? stay five totally immoral. they are going to keep coming until you stop them. there is no reason why not. >> juan: dana, let's talk about the lunch today, the lunch that didn't happen. the president tried to invite what he described or the

white house described as moderate democrats. he wanted to try to get around pelosi in the leadership. would look like pelosi help those people in place. they didn't go. >> dana: groups are stronger when they stick together. and so far the republicans are sticking together, and the democrats are sticking together. we are at quite an impasse. i thought maybe you would start disease them democrats -- -- remember last week, cher tweeted it's not worth it. just give the money for the wall and that the workers get back to work. i thought it might pick up some steam but so far, no dice. i think with the issue on the caravan, people are on the move all around the world. this is not just happening at our southern border. there is these problems in europe, they had the big brexit issue today. people are leaving because their governments are failing. there's a bigger conversation that needs to be happening. it's a $5 billion squabble, it's a little bit petty compared to what's really going on.

challenge has hit social media. users post side-by-side photos of themselves to show how much they've aged. here are a few celebrity examples. actress reese witherspoon. television host and radio star ryan seacrest. actor and comedian kevin hard. now "the five" is joining in on the fun. i wanted to do this with my instagram pictures. juan, show us the past ten years. >> juan: there you go. >> katie: explain the context of the photos. >> juan: the big difference is the hair. i think my hairline is a little weaker now. i think i have more gray before i started putting some color in there. i think the other thing that strikes me about this is the question of wrinkles. it doesn't look like i've done too badly. >> greg: i like the gray better. >> jesse: i would get rid of the jacket. >> juan: you don't like the brown jacket? it was ten years ago. >> jesse: i don't know what

walk. that was my last press briefing, about a year ago this week -- ten years ago this week. >> katie: dana at the white house. >> dana: i have some time now to do some hair and makeup. >> jesse: i do not have hair and makeup. >> katie: here i am at my college news station doing my weekly political statement in here i am on "the five" yesterday. i think i've improved. >> dana: it is humbling, isn't it? >> katie: i am in a t-shirt like steven hilton. my hair is green from the green screen. >> juan: were you playing sports? >> katie: not in college. in high school, not in college. >> jesse: i think the producers are mad at me for some reason. not a good picture. i didn't have hair and makeup. i was the only one with no hair and makeup. >> katie: you could have sent in your own photo. >> jesse: i don't have pictures of myself from ten

years ago. >> katie: my hair was green. at least to her wasn't green. looks like you tried. >> jesse: i didn't try. that was a local, wasn't it? >> greg: the difference doesn't matter until you are way older, like between 70 and 80. >> katie: what's your advice to those getting older? >> greg: it gets better, way better. trust me. it's so much more fun. you stop caring, you do whatever you want. >> juan: you become an angry old coot. this year, 2019, i'm going to be 65. there is going to be an immediate drop off. >> jesse: are you going to retire, juan? >> juan: only if you come with me. >> katie: all right, well juan is not retiring, just so everybody knows. ♪ >> dana: it is time now for one more thing. >> greg: time for, greg's journey to a driving license. i will take you along this journey america. i went to the dmv and i got a 2. i did drop my social security card on the floor and i was in panic running around screaming and yelling. having said that, i thought everything was great and then i was told as i was leaving, you have to sign up for a five hour -- a five hour driver's course. left leg i have to take a driver's course if anybody in new york who does a drivers course, give me a call. i don't even know how to do what! where will i go? >> dana: what does that mean? a race car course? >> juan: there has to be some

independent guy with that pickup truck. >> katie: are you getting your license again? >> greg: after start driving again. it is been too long. i went to the dmv this morning and i'm getting a colonoscopy tomorrow. >> dana: it has been quite a week for you. >> greg: the best part of going to the dmv, he didn't do animals are great. >> dana: a new study gives me so much hope, it is about america's reading habits. the study found that 86% of those surveys feel they make a conscious effort to read every day. the biggest number between 25 and 34-year-olds, they read almost three hours a day. this is a really good thing. people topics would go away. >> greg: what are they reading? >> dana: i will tell you what i read recently. >> greg: i mean, what did they say they are reading? >> dana: they are also reading proper books, social media as well.

67% said they feel accomplished after reading a book. maybe they are buying your book. both are some books i read. i loved it. my absolute darling, that one was really hard. everybody has read that. >> juan: the little kid and we loves to watch things go boom. take a look at what happens on the bridge today. >> dana: wow. >> juan: the bridge tumble in the hudson river, once the waves of black smoke dispersed in the cold winter air the bridge can be seen half submerged in the chilly waters. hundreds of new yorkers briefed equal to witness, they chanted, "blow it up! the bridge is being replaced by new bridge named for the father of new york's current governor.
