[cheers and applause] ♪ steve: you know, we have been doing this show for over 20 years. this is the first time. we have taken the show out to you over the last couple years we have done the diner shows where we take the program to you. today you are actually coming to us. a couple weeks ago we said who would like to come? all these folks filled out forms. they had no idea they would have to get up at 2:00 in the morning to be here. brian: let's be fair to ainsley 20 years ago she was in fifth grade. ainsley: i was telling brian i was like gosh, if i were in a studio audience 20 years ago here at "fox & friends," i would have been so excited. we love y'all. [cheers and applause] ainsley: but this is a dream come true for all of us. and we know we are sitting here because of you guys. you keep us employed and you watch every day and we can't thank you enough. brian: how many people here just to see regis? [laughter] ainsley: wrong show. steve: you will notice that some of our regular friends

in the audience today. have you seen them on television before and lived in the new york city area. good to have them. also people from all over the country are with us because they wanted to the watch us do the news. we are going to start the news. once again, the big story as it was yesterday, there is a caravan. brian: since when? i didn't know about the caravan. steve: it is currently moving through central america. and yesterday honduran authorities arrested, actually, one of the organizers his name was juan molina. this time they are actually checking credentials and asking for papers. they have realized he had an outstanding warrant for rape. he has been arrested. nonetheless, the rest of them are marching toward our southern border. ainsley: it's day 27 of the shutdown. we have some more news to report to you that has to do with this. we are all holding a letter this morning that nancy pelosi penned to the president. on january 3rd, as the speaker of the house, she asked the "to speak for the state of the union address. that's how it works. well then she sent him a letter yesterday saying, you know what?

because of this shutdown, i'm asking you to either submit your address in writing, not stand at the podium or let's delay it. steve: that's right. brian: how sin senior is that she is concerned about security and concerned something will happen. the only problem is she didn't ask the secretary of homeland security about it she'll didn't ask the secret service about it she asked benny thompson what do you think about security. by the way it's already been done and finished and we have experts in the audience to talk about this. kirsten nielsen said the department of homeland security and secret service are fully prepared to support and secure the state of the union. we thank the service for their mission focus and dedication and for all they do each day to secure the homeland. if it was a sincere concern for the speaker, don't you think the chairman would have known about it? steve: well, and if there is a security problem at the u.s. capitol, why are they running the government? they have passed some bills yesterday. you've got to wonder by the president has not responded yet. it's because he doesn't know whether or not she was

actually canceling it or whether or not it was a political statement. buff how many people in our audience think and this is just a question. how many of you have think she does not want to give him the political stage, you know, all eyes are going to be on him and at some point you know our president. if he is in front of a joint session of congress, and she is sitting right behind him, don't you think at some point is he going to turn around and say the reason our government is not open right now is because that woman behind me is not going to negotiate. am i right? [cheers and applause] ainsley: does make people wonder why she is doing. this is it really a security concern or she doesn't want to give the president that opportunity. steve: to be on tv. ainsley: exactly. to be o on tv and point fixers at her. they are not willing to come to the table and come up with a plan. brian: karl rove is actually on our network. he was asked this question question last night. here's what he said about this mo.

call him out every day. nancy pelosi evidently in meetings he will point out catholic faith. in the "the washington post" before they had last meeting which was a blow up. he said will you say a prayer first. i would also say, this there seems to be a break among the democratic side. problem solvers showed up yesterday. they were all ears. ainsley: a lot of them freshman. steve: states that trump won. brian: senator coons said there are places we need a wall. i don't think it's immoral. steny hoyer indicated the same thing. to say the wall is immoral. if you are that focused then nancy pelosi can go out and hire fence removers. we have 600 miles of immoral fence. that's totally insincere. maybe something is going to break. maybe there is a belief that they can go in, if there is an agreement that they will build some type of wall, slat, fence, steel barrier for three and a half weeks they open it up and some type of agreement there. steve: ultimately it comes down to, this nancy pelosi versus the president. she has waited years to get

his agenda to the american people. although we are in the midst of a shutdown. i think it's necessary that we as americans are able to understand what's going on in government. carley: now, i want to ask you another question about this topic, kirstjen nielsen responded. you know, nancy pelosi said this was all about keeping the president safe and keeping everybody safe because of the partial government shutdown. she responded and said we have been preparing for this for months now. so, do you think that this was pause she is worried about security or because of something else? i'm going to ask you? >> truthfully speaking i just think that anything trump would do she would negate it. so, like everyone, when we raised our hands, i think we should definitely let the president give the state of the union message to the people. carley: and i saw your hand pop up as well. i'm going to go over to you, do you have any opinions on this? >> yes, i believe this is

absolutely -- she is afraid the president is going to let everybody know exactly what's going on. he has bent over backwards to resol the issue and think won't budge. she'll doesn't want miracle to see it. carley: i'm excited to have everybody here today. we will talk to everybody throughout the whole entire three hours. we will get everybody's opinion on all of these topics so, we have a lot more coming up. warning for wall street. what did you make of her agenda? >> she wants revenge. she has come flat out with it and said i want revenge. says i am going to do to you, as in the banks, what did you to us. she is going to turn this committee, which she now chairs, into a court which is going to try and punish bankers. you will see a lot of hearings where bankers, leading bankers will have to stand up, raise their right hand and take the oath. that's very bad pr for the banking industry and maxine waters is doing that deliberately. she will harass the president. she will go after deutsch bank which financed some of the trump organization business. she goal after the deutsch bank and harass the president. she will call for new taxes on wall street. i think she is going to turn that committee into a sounding board to establish the democrats' financial policies going into 2020. but, i don't think she has any real power to affect the economy because any new rules or suggestions that she has can be reversed by

the republican senate and/or vetoed by the president. brian: a lookout of the people responsible for 2008 are retired, gone, or fishing somewhere. where did she dust this speech off from? >> well, she doesn't like the banks. she blames the banks for the crash 10 years ago. i think that's regurgitating old ground, frankly. that's what she is going to do. you will see an endless set of hearings where the banking industry, wall street, rich people are pillarried in front of this committee. don't forget aoc is on that committee as well. steve: stuart. somebody in the audience has a question. that guy right there with the gray sweater. brian: what's your name? >> tom. 2 million people following her on twitter. ainsley: yeah. other democrats like beto o'rourke, elizabeth warren and kamala harris have been trying to follow her lead this year but so far they seem to be falling a little flat. brian: in some cases. alexandria ocasio-cortez will be leading a session on the hill to help school her fellow democrats on social media skills that will go over well. is she really the best picture here? lawrence jones editor and chief of campus reform and fox news contributor. she does know what she is doing on social media. no one can argue with those numbers. >> you can't dispute her social media activity but you also can't dispute her ability to connect with people. when it comes to policy and understanding the facts and figures that's where she falls short. the fact of the matter is the stuff that she has, you cannot teach this. she has that it factor even though she can't deliver. remember, i always tell people don't under estimate this girl even though she sucks at policy. [applause] >> i remember where the same thing happened to the president of the united states. it is like he doesn't know policy. his voters knew him. he was able to connect with

them and he bypassed the political establishment and just connected with simple language to the american people. so, i think there is a similarity in that although she doesn't have the substance to back what she is saying. ainsley: a lot of people don't agree with her politics. socialist, very, very extreme. she is the darling. she is cute and fun to watch and i like to listen to her. steve: she danced in college. ainsley: so funny, reminds me of of my baby brother when he comes home. mom and dad are here are the remotes. he knows how to use the remotes and social media. they go to the youngest one to teach the older people how to do social media. >> these are politicians that are going to end up having their communication satisfy run. this the reason it works for alexandria ocasio-cortez is because she actually runs her twitter account. she does a little too much tweeting sometimes. at the end of the day she connects with people. that's the beautiful thing about what she does. i would actually stop focusing on aoc because really she doesn't believe in the stuff that she says. she was anti-nancy pelosi

the first moment she got voted for her and got on a big committee. steve: i talked to some members of congress, they are shocked at the amount of mainstream media press she has gotten. but they could be a little gejealous. folks have questions for lawrence. right back there is cathy. cathy, what's your question? >> i have a daughter that's in college and one soon to go to college. one of the things i worry about is the liberal bias they are going to be getting from a lot of the professors. how do i choose a college or help them choose a college that they will get more holistic view of the world? steve: a fair and balanced college? [laughter] >> kind of hard to get that college experience. look at campus reform, we cover it all the time. what i always tell donors that ask me this question is to go to our website and type up the college that you are actually thinking about, and you can see a list of stories that we have written about these colleges. we cover -- we have over 115 correspondents on college campuses. these are young people writing about what's happening on their universities on a daily

basis. the thing that troubles me is that even some of the christian colleges have started to get a little fickle as well. hillsdale is a good one. liberty. and you will get both sides of the political spectrum there. brian: my son was shocked after president trump won all of a sudden he got these even off campus emails if you need somebody to talk, to we have therapists 24 hours a day. steve: therapy dogs. brian: other neighbor's son went to at any point can you go in a room and hug a puppy if you feel things are getting overwhelming. >> i'm telling you trump did a number on these people. courses on the college campuses on how to impeach donald trump. brian: we have a bad day we will pet puppies. ainsley: you are the parents. you pay for it and some say you can't each look at your kids' grades. steve: who else has a question for lawrence jones about college and liberal bias? the lady in the red. what's your name and where are you from? >> mary ann from hazar haslet

brian: right now hundreds of migrants are on the move to the u.s. border as we speak. ainsley: and a brand new caravan is on its way up. steve: we have dispatched griff jenkins live to guatemala city where the migrants are marching. griff, so they have left honduras and now you are in guatemala heading toward mexico, right? griff: that's right, guys. we are in guatemala city and just outside of the shelter where the largest concentration of this group which has been loosely organized a bit chaotic are on the march. approximately 500. they left about 20 minutes ago. we are being very careful. we want to show you, too, just a little bit of a look at these -- you have families, you can see the back, women with children in strollers marching along an incredibly busy street. guatemala city is a large city similar to that of washington or new york city and the conditions here this is why the authorities, whether they be u.s. authorities or honduran

authorities or mexican authorities, this is why groups like this should not do this. we are going to show you from the back. families marching along unbelievable traffic. now, this comes as we were in that shelter earlier yesterday and spoke to one of the migrants about his journey. his name is marsio kavario this is what he had to say. >> two years ago. griff: are you discouraged from trying to go because the border is harder to get across? >> i know it's harder now than before, but i have got to try. i have to. griff: marcio was arrested for soliciting prosecution. he will have a hard time getting asylum. obviously. now these folks are headed 150 miles north of here to the guatemala-mexico border. that is the same path that the last caravan took. and it is the same path that we expect will be, perhaps,

in the next 24 to 48 hours. this is really the front of it. >> now the shelter person told us, the director of the shelter said they are expecting about 2500 total coming. so this is growing as it heads north towards ultimately the united states, guys. steve: all right. griff jenkins live in guatemala city where it is 5:36 in the morning. tom homan joins us. you know him. former acting ice director. over the last two days griff has been talking to people. the reason they are marching north, they need to make money or they have got family there those are two reasons not would qualify you for asylum. >> no. to qualify for asylum you have to be escaping fear and persecution because of your race, ethnicity or political beliefs. coming for a better life doesn't qualify for asylum. i can't blame anybody want to be the greatest country on earth. you can't be a part of the greatest country on earth and not respect its laws. stopped in line with the other millions of people

standing in line. brian: here's the problem. they keep coming. there is three or four in a row now. why do they keep coming when they know it's reasonable doubt going to be hard to come. >> in why would they stop coming you have a democratic congress refuses to build a wall. a democratic house that refuses to address the loopholes that caused this illegal immigration. you bring a child you won't be detained more than 10 days and get released and won't show up in court. even if you show up in court you won't leave. less than 2% have left. why would you stop coming? why would you stop coming? have you liberal judges in the ninth circuit saying you can't detain families long enough to see judge. this is an open border. that's why this is a crisis. it's not a manufactured crisis. this is a crisis. this is an open border agenda and people are coming to this country our sovereignty as a country is under attack. this is a crisis. president trump is 100 percent right on this issue. ainsley: tom, i know you were on capitol hill with all the angel moms and dads the other day knocking on the offices of nancy pelosi and chuck schumer and they wouldn't come out and talk to the angel parents. hats off to you for paying

now. is that just two antiquated to follow? >> god, i hope not. the whole purpose of the constitution was to establish the government and limit it to provide for a limited government and to guarantee personal liberty. i don't know what was in congressman o'rourke's head. of course, i read the interview several times to try to figure out what was in his head. i think he is not appealing to middle america. he is appealing to a very hard left that basically wants the government to redistribute wealth. steve: those are primary voters. >> judge: yes. the redistribution of wealth, which we do engage in to a certain extent, under beto o'rourke and his colleagues would be without end. brian: i will tell you with the guest who is defending beto o'rourke said last night to tucker. he said it's a common argument in judicial circles to talk about the constitution as a living, breathing document or one that should be taken verbatim. >> you know, my late, wonderful friend justice scalia argued that if the

to work. steve: are you hurting personally. >> personally, no. i have a lot of friends that are and couples that work there. is there any recourse that they have? how long could they let this go on? judge: i don't know how long it could go on. it's worse than we think it is. my colleagues on the bench are telling me fbi agents can't get into courtrooms to testify because their credit cards don't work and can't get gas into their cars and u.s. marshals can't get prisoners into courtroom for their own hearings. prisoners are being held in jail without hearings to which they have an absolute right because the government can't physically get them from the jail to the courthouse. ainsley: can i ask michelle a question? what are your employee friends saying? how are they paying their bills most americans do live paycheck to paycheck. >> people have taken withdraws out on annuities to get them through this. and a lot of people are just borrowing from friends, doing whatever they in hopes this is going to end

where the migrant caravan is continuing to head to the north. currently ranges anywhere from 1500 to 2,000. those are the estimates. and what is interesting is when they went from the country of honduras in guatemala yesterday, guatemala officials actually asked for papers. and some people who did not have papers or who were wanted on warrants were not allowed to proceed. brian: yeah. that's the least of our worries. we just can't stop it right now. many people speculating maybe we should give these countries more money in order to make these countries better so they don't want to come here. we are already giving hundreds of millions of dollars just to get their act together. i don't trust the government with the money we give them anyway with the money. ainsley: we have talked to people in our audience furloughed who aren't getting paychecks and sitting home living paycheck to paycheck. extremely difficult. when you watch, our lawmakers that we elected we went to the polls to elect. we see them not wanting to budge and not wanting to compromise.

it's extremely frustrating u. steve: then you look at nancy pelosi. we know that the state of the union, when the president goes up and addresses a joint session of congress, coming up not this next tuesday but the tuesday after that. that's when it was -- when nancy pelosi invited him to show up. well, yesterday, extraordinarily, first time in history, she said, mr. president, because of the government shutdown, don't come. the rationale was that there was a safety problem. but then you heard from the department of homeland security and the secret service and they said what are you talking about? there is no safety problem. i heard from somebody in the administration this morning for goodness sakes, the president of the united states during the shutdown went to iraq. he can go to the capital. it's not that big of deal. ainsley: that's a great point. they have been planning this for months. despite the shutdown the mission has not changed. brian: so is a 21-year-old terrorist planning to go and attack the white house. you know how vital our intelligence is as well as our law enforcement. meanwhile, the question is, did they make any progress yesterday when susan collins, when rob portman,

when joe manchin, when kyrsten sinema and chris coons went to the white house to try to work something out, it all depends on how much they are going to put toward a border barrier, not even a fence. nancy pelosi says nothing. and these democrats are beginning to say yeah. we will put something out there. something has got to break soon. for steve scalise, house minority whip now, is he watching these negotiations take place. he says it's all out of control. >> the left is becoming unhinged. look,istic in all those meetings in the situation room with nancy pelosi and chuck schumer, the top leaders of the house and senate. every single meeting the president was not only calm but he was putting options on the table to reopen the government while securing the border. not one single time, laura, did they ever put an alternative on the table. not once. steve: and it does look, unfortunately, as if this could actually be the tone that the democrats are going to take for the next two years. just whatever the president suggests, stop, just stop. as we have heard.

brian: why would you reelect anybody that just doesn't have an agenda that is just there to stop the president. for example, they have goals, too. is it infrastructure? is their goal to raise taxes? whatever it is, they can't do it as long as the government is shutdown. steve: look, brian, a lot of them got elected to you do, this to resistth president. and now think are doin they are. ainsley: listen to journalists and reporters there, they would make you believe that the rest of the world -- or the rest of our country agrees with nancy pelosi. our audience when we started the show how many think the president shouldn't do the state of the union and listen to nancy pelosi. no one agreed with nancy pelosi. they all want the president to continue doing this even people furloughed said please, president, press on. rush limbaugh had this to say. >> can i tell you, folks, if president trump can hang in there, if he can hang in there and not go wobbly, he can win this.

four weeks, a lot of risks, there are going to be a lot of temptations to drop the ball and cave. i don't mean cave. there is going to be a lot of temptation to make a deal. and he can win this if he just hangs in there. steve: then he went to a commercial u. brian: he did, obviously. the president can win by still compromising. he is not going to get everything he wants. it's impossible. steve: he has already compromised. brian: he wants between -- obviously over the 1.3 up to 5.8. maybe give up some daca pathway to citizenship. there is something else they could do there i think doing a deal also shows great leadership. right now, of the polls show he is getting most of the blame. 49% blame him. 33% blame the democrats. that's the general population. steve: going in, he said i'm going to own it the american public thinks that. meanwhile the biggest tv show of the year is the

super bowl this year there is some controversy about whether or not the performers, which would include maroon 5, travis scott and big boy whether or not they should actually take a knee during their performances? solidarity with collin kaepernick. apparently change.org put out a petition. ainsley: apparently the ratings went up for the nfl this year. brian: hugely. ainsley: because they were not showing the video, photographers were not showing the players when they were taking knees. brian: we don't know. they stopped televising the national anthem. now, the nfl is going to have a problem. they always televise the national anthem during out super bowl. there is the flyover where there is some type of celebration you take the shot because even though this will be indoors in atlanta, you see the players with their hands over their hearts. how are they going to get around it? my sense maroon 5 travis scott under a lot of pressure performing with the entertainment community. now if they don't take a knee and this thing gains
