our control room to the producers because they work so great. pete: he goes to restaurants and meets friends. some of them will probably be here as guest later on. ed: they don't know who i am they know pete. let me tell you something that's sweet. a breaking overnight. a big, big story. a fox news alert. the so-called buzzfeed bombshell seems to be coming apart. remember where we started late thursday night there was this the latest quote, unquote, bombshell. pete: some bombshells i can't keep track. ed: a week ago the "new york times" saying the fbi had this big investigation to see whether or not the president of the united states was a special agent. that story has gone away that was a week ago. thursday night buzzfeed comes out with massive story suggesting that the president of the united states instructed his former lawyer michael cohen to lie to congress. the breaking news this morning is that the special counsel, robert mueller, has made a rare public statement through his spokesman saying it's not true. this is peter carr, his

spokeman saying buzzfeed's description of specific statements to the special counsel's office in characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office regarding michael cohen's congressional testimony are not accurate. pete: buzzfeed had no sources. no other outlet. ed: anonymous sources. pete: every other news outlet was going with the headline but saying we cannot yet independently corroborate this evidence. ed: nonetheless it might lead to impeachment. jedediah: if true. interestingly enough buzzfeed was quick to respond editor said we stand by our reporting ant the sources who informed it and we urge the special counsel to make clear what he was disputing. this was interesting to seat special counsel come out right away. at love people speculating as to why they would feel the need to comment. i think it was because the suggestion was that the big nugget here was there was evidence, substantial evidence that was held by the special counsel and that implication did not sit well with robert mueller, which

is fascinating. pete: yeah, the implication was that they had evidence that cohen -- the president told cohen to lie. other than cohen just telling. jedediah: not just words. ed: emails and text messages they claimed in the story from anonymous sources again thursday night, that there were email and text messages from people in the trump organization the business side of everything that were backing up michael cohen that would suggest the president was lying. no, thought special counsel is saying hang on time out not true. guess who is now weighing in. the president, tweeting. remember it was buzzfeed who released the totally discredited dossier paid for by crooked hillary clinton and the democrats as opposition reseason on which the entire russian probe is based. he avery sad day for journalism but a great day for our country. pete: it is a sad day for journalism. they ran with this for 24 hours with a caveat because they were so happy that they thought they had trump.

you are frustrated as anybody. ed: they have these anonymous sources. we all can rely on anonymous sources sometimes. you have to check them out and make sure it's true. run them past the white house and special counsel. they said they did all of that and buzzfeed is standing by the story. but you can't just throw out there something that suggest that the president of the united states instructed someone to lie and was obstructing justice. that's what the allegation was. and so what i'm more frustrated than buzzfeed's original story is the number of people at so-called credible media organizations ran with a story they could not independently confirm and said this could lead typically people. jedediah: seems like anyone can write anything these days and whether or not it's verified the sourcing makes any sense and whether or not you could read it and yeah this seems valentine' valid. what they want is for that narrative to get out there. a lot of the people are going to hang on to and this not hang onto the story

they want to preserve the integrity of the special counsel investigation. they saw an opportunity to get rid of true fake news and squash it so they can look more credible and buzzfeed look even worse. everyone else ran with it. jedediah: they give donald trump that talking point repeatedly. he is always saying fake news, fake news. listen, when you cover something like, this that's completely unsubstantiated that so many people in the community and law enforcement community saying hold on a second, who are these sources? where did you get this information and are looking at this michael cohen has lied and oh there is text messages and. you don't wait to see will a special counsel respond? is this actually coming from the special counsel? you are giving him credence when he says you are tout get him as an entity. that's the reason he talks about. this and the reasonable everyone the at home voted for him the media does not represent me and this is a prime case as to why. pete: almost feels like the media is destroying itself. ed: if you remember the mainstream media and you lost jeff, you are in

jedediah: we have a fox news alert. right now the migrant caravan is on the move inching closer to the u.s. border. pete: they are heading to tijuana today, making good time. ed: our own griff jenkins, of course, live on the ground in viva mexico, good morning to you. griff: good morning, guys. they are on the march. 2500 miles from here to tijuana. that's the equivalent of walking from washington, d.c. to los angeles. you can see all around me to several thousand. it's probably 2,000, i would say, to 2500 and this large group changed guys from what we saw in early days in honduras and guatemala. it was spread out. in mexico they are banding together. you can even see it's obviously very dark. but some of them are taking a little break in the road as we walk along because they are tired. they have been going for more than 600 miles when they started in honduras. they stick together in mexico because they are worried about gangs and criminals preying upon them and worried also about mexican immigration

officials that were picking them off and deporting them when they were in small groups in the first caravan. what's different this time, guys, they were met with this new mexican president and administration with welcomed arms and open doors as we saw yesterday the gate was left wide open not a single police officer. quite a contrast. they want the mexican government and interior minister had said before this caravan came said they were going to post, quote gardz at all 370 border crossings in the southern mexican border. we spoke to one. migrants yesterday named jorge santos. and he at the border there was telling me is aware of the border -- the government shutdown situation in the fight here in our country what to do about the situation. here is what he had to say about president trump and his intention to build a wall. livable. >> i'm not okay with it, with the president putting it down bottom line.

national women's march organization and specifically its leadership joining us now to weigh in independent women's forum patrice, thank you so much for being here. what do you make of this drastic change. this started out as a movement everyone thought was inclusive even though they said pro-life groups were not welcome to be partners. facing charges of anti-semitism. >> this has been the problem with the women's march from the start. bill themselves as being inclusive. in fact they are very exclusive. sad many jewish women feel like they can't bharch or be a part of it and some of the groups are disbanding. women incident-thinking. women who voted for president trump and not hillary clinton. what's being exposed is hypocrisies, anti-semitism and frankly the unwelcoming atmosphere that this march is about. it's really not for all women.

all the way to tijuana. they are carrying small children. this is a difficult, difficult journey to make. and it is a mixed group although you can fairly say about 60 or 65, 70% is males with some families mixing in here. they are taking a little break here along the way because there is this little town of viva, mexico stopping at the local food mart to see if they can get food and water. and the ambulance here, we were just showing a little bit because that is a sign that the mexican government is at least from a health perspective trying to help these pokes as they begin this very long journey that began six days ago in honduras. guys? those are straight up on the ground what is happening. the caravan is growing. griff, you said mostly young men serntion out word is how children are the way to seek asylum or claim refugee status if you are able to get into the united states, right?

to start. so much to cover here. whether you have folks like dan rather yesterday supposed to be one of the great anchors in american history trying to sort out the great mysteries of the day saying the walls are closing in on donald trump. how do you react to that? >> i mean, this is just the latest in a long line of stories where we have had exact same thing happen. explosive claims that if true would bring down the presidency and then they all sort of end up being a dud. the promised evidence never arises. there are two problems with this. one is the buzzfeed story itself. it has big claims that were not backed up by any evidence in the story. there was a secondary problem of so many journalists at every single media outlet taking the claim seriously even though nobody had bothered to provide any evidence supporting them. it's a -- not just buzzfeed's problem. it's actually a lot of other people's problem, too. for being so gullible. particularly on a story where it always seems to happen this way. ed: yeah. the initial response from the trump legal team rudy giuliani and others was look, you are trusting the word of an admitted liar in

michael cohen. as you know it, goes deeper than that the buzzfeed story was alleging this was not just michael cohen's word against the president but that there were text messages and emails that would prove michael cohen is right. that statement from the special counsel, robert mueller's office, seems to be unambiguous. seems to be saying we have no such evidence. >> the actual claim in the buzzfeed story wasn't so much based on cohen as they claimed a treasure trove of evidence and two anonymous federal law enforcement officials. that utter slap down from the special counsel and the special counsel by the way has previously said that a lot of the stories that you hear about them are false. they haven't gone so far as to specifically denounce the story as they did in this case in which really shows you just how bad it was. and also speaks to how much people were getting carried away with it even though, again, there was no evidence in the story itself. we have to be smart news consumers wells we need to be very careful not to just fall for everything. ed: mollie it goes even deeper. yoyou have been ahead of the

curve on malfeasance and how this russia probe began. if you compare the buzzfeed story that you say everyone ran with anonymous sources that turned out it looks like not to be true. on the other hand, bruce ore at the justice department and this transcript on the record that we now see kim strassel and you and others have been reporting on where he says i warned people at the fbi that this was political information the dossier. paid for by the clinton camp and yet they ran with it anyway. most of the media, my point is, are not going with that on the record transcript. they are ignoring it, mollie, they run watt noe with e anonymous sources. >> all these stories go against the administration ran without evidence. on the other hand have you dozens, if not hundreds of stories based on factual evidence and the record showing problems with the fbi's procedures and how they handle things when it came to the 2016 campaign and thereafter. when they were actually wiretaps campaign officials, sending human informs against them and that story, which is explosive and has evidence is not getting covered.

a political statement but simply we had an issue on the floor -- well, we had an issue in committee where one of my fellow colleagues, senator black from loudoun county had an altercation with some leftist activists who really got in his face to the point where they had to call capital police in. so it was the next day, that morning when i got up i said you know what? i'm not going to conceal carry today. i'm actually going to open carry just to serve as a deterrent from anyone that would try to, you know, be aggressive and be a deternted so there wouldn't be further altercation. pete: that the is point deterrent you are more safe because someone knows that that potential is there you talk about when your day is over heading out to a dark parking lot near the capital. ultimately your ability to have a firearm shows that you have got strength and you have got the ability to defend yourself. >> right. and case in point, i was coming off of the senate

floor right after a vote against the so-called equal rights amendment and i had several rather enthusiastic, to put it nicely, supporters of the era to approach me and they were two pretty large female women, taller, a lot larger than i am, and they approached me, went through two of my aids but when they got to me, they actually looked down and saw my firearm strapped to my hip and they backed off. and so, i think it's a deterrent. i think it deterred a potential altercation that could have escalated to a point that would have not been good. and, you know, the capital police in virginia they do a fantastic job but they cannot be everywhere every second. jedediah: what do you say to critics that say it's actually not a deterrent and they feel it would insight nor violence and lead to accidents potentially happening with these firearms if they're exposed? is that a fair argument?

>> it's a personal decision. the second amendment supporter, i mean every citizen in the united states is given the ability to protect themselves personally. it's a part of their constitution. part of our constitutional right as americans. and so, some people feel comfortable with it, some people, i understand, you know, i didn't start carrying until i got in the senate and had to deal with threats and altercation and those types of things. it's just differential. i would say until have you walked in someone else's shoes you really shouldn't judge. pete: important point not just lawmakers that have the ability to open carry. any citizen in virginia for the most part unless you live in some of the more left-wing counties has that ability. correct? it's not just you guys. >> yes. in virginia, you can open carry. do you need to get per note conceal carry. and i do have my conceal carry permit.

question of elected officials making compromises and asking which one comes closer to your view 61% say i like elected officials to make compromises. 31% say i like elected officials to stick to their positions. what do you make of that? >> well, you are seeing that president trump really can fall in both of those, right? you know, is he willing to make a deal. he is willing to compromise. but, democrats, on the other hand, they are simply not, flight you have seen that recently where republicans gathered in the white house and there was no sign of a democrat and instead they were vacationing, right? they were in puerto rico and nancy pelosi was recently in hawaii and now who knows where she is going to to take some time off. we are seeing that republicans and president trump is willing to come to the table but also sticking to his principles. he really fits in both of those and, again, people are rewarding him with their support. pete: grus, briefly, democrats have predicated future success on this idea that minorities populations are you default voting block

for them in perpetuity. if you are a democrat today, look at that number 50% approval rating after the showdown at the border, what are you thinking? >> you are thinking that one, you know, hispanics do care about border security. you know, they come to this country, some of them fleeing the crisis that's happening in their country, right where they are, you know, that the violence from gangs and from unstable governments, you know, that's drawing them to the united states. and simply put, you know, it's really important for them to realize these hispanics here in this country democrats have failed. democrats have not lived up to their word and, you know, it's important for democrats to know that people are seeing, especially in the hispanic community that they are not keeping to their promises you know, you saw president obama promise multiple times, right, over the course of 8 years immigration reform and he didn't do anything. he didn't compromise and simply put didn't do anything to really advance

american people and, yet, you give the president more fodder by creating more fake news. it seems to me. >> well, i mean, of course, this is a bad day for buzzfeed. i think a bad day for journalism. it's pretty clear. andrew mccarthy was on tucker carlson last night. is he a former u.s. attorney. and he made a great point that like, from a lawyer's perspective, they read this story and there was just a glitch in their brains. because, if robert mueller and his team had known, if they had proof that the president actively tried to get cohen to lie. ed: instructed him. >> instructed him to lie, then they obviously would have built it in their pleas in front of a judge. they would have come out and say i plead guilty to obstruct a criminal investigation. obviously that didn't happen from. a lawyer's perspective. this is obviously false. again for buzzfeed to not just call a couple of lawyers and say hey, does this make sense? ed: legal problems, political problems and problems with the media, which is our focus. joe, it's not just sort of

to talk about media. it's amazing. the big tell for me yesterday is, ed, on cnn yesterday morning, one the reporters. one of the two involved with this story, he said that he had not seen the evidence that was used in the story. in other words, it wasn't based on michael cohen and is he a liar. actual evidence. another reporter goes on msnbc and says oh, no. we, both reporters have seen the story. so right out of the gate. somebody was lying. ed: needed to get their story straight. >> there has been very good reporting on this story and there is great journalist out there this is a larger problem with the media and pressure people are under to be first in this feeding frenzy. ed: chris, quick last word the report from mueller should be coming out at some point. what's the lesson for journalists? >> utmost interesting points of this whole episode to me is why mueller, why now? he has had plengtsd of opportunities to opine on stories. tens of thousands of stories over the last couple years. i think what the lesson is for the media is don't cross

ensuring the threat does not regather? >> well, pete, you know, we have to really ask ourselves a question what's our mission there? our mission has been to deny sanctuary to terrorists so they cannot plan terrorist attacks against the united states. and, while i was there, in 2006 and 2007, we disrupted terrorist attacks being planned by al qaeda and other operatives against the united states and so we were able to do that. but, president trump is right to ask is there a alberto way to do this? and it turns out that there is: we have been there for almost 18 years now we need to take a hard look at how we are operating. we have air bases there and north of 10,000 troops. and, you know, we really need to look at whether or not we can bring our privatized force in syria as well and transition out of this operation because it's mainly a nation-building operation now. and our forces will do whatever, as you know, pete, our forces will do whatever we ask of them but they're

combat sailors soldiers airmen and marines. and there is a way to do nation building but that's the private enterprise. and so, why not use private military contractors with embedded training teams and air force and medical evacuation and governance teams to come in and help us transition out. pete: sure. >> and in world war ii we transitioned into the pacific theater using the flying tigers who are a private military contract force and they knocked 300 japanese airplanes out of the sky helping protect china and helping buy time for the u.s. air force to get in to theater, you know, within 12 days of pearl harbor the flying tigers were knocking japanese airplanes out of the sky. pete: the private component has been part of the discussion no doubt. the larger frustration some people have is i was there in 2011 and 2012 as well. the taliban was already resurgent then. we have been there 17 years,

the greatest army the planet has ever seen, the united states military has been training the afghan military and governance teams for 17 years. they are still not ready will they be -- ever be ready truly and are we looking at a future that will be largely dominated by the taliban based on our decision? >> yeah. so you have got 175,000 afghan national army. about 150,000 afghan national police. and they can do the job now. the issue is that the taliban is a tribal entity that has been forever in afghanistan and will forever be there and so how do you -- how do you coexist within afghanistan with the taliban entity? and the taliban is only a threat to america inasmuch as they host foreign fighters that plan operations against the united states. and so, the happy medium in my opinion here is keeping intelligence and communications forces there with an over the horizon force that can strike quickly when we learn, when

numbers, a larger number gathering heading towards tijuana and that is the problem we had with 7000 migrants on the border of the united states, some trying to as you heard sneak in. the other concern we will have here today is the heat. we saw one gentleman collapsing saying he can't go on. there is an immigration check point a mile from where i'm standing where they are offering free deportation, you can give yourself in and say i quit, i give up and they will deport you back to your own country, hunter is, guatemala but one thing they are not doing is checking anyone for whether they entered illegally and not rounding them up or deporting them. the message from this government is still just saying welcoming the migrants as they make their way towards the us border.

investigation itself is at stake. the way the buzz feed story was framed, it came from two law enforcement people who were suggested by the story to be from mueller's own shop and under those circumstances the reputation of his own investigation needed to shoot it down. >> there have been other reports proven to be false but not disputed. buzz feed stand behind the story. ben smith said we stand behind our reporting and the sources who informed and urge the special counsel to make clear what he is disputing. it seems the special counsel's statement is pretty unambiguous. somebody is wrong here. >> you are right. if buzz feed feels that way i understand if they don't want to identify their sources, no news organization once to do that, though in this case you have a couple sources, the story blows up the way it looks like it is going to blow up you have to
