[ laughter ] jillian: tell me how you really feel on this monday morning, rob? rob: good morning. you're watching "fox & friends first" on this monday morning. i'm rob. jillian: i'm jillian. thank you for starting your day with us. democrats refusing to provide a counter offer to president trump's new proposal to reopen the government. rob: garrett tenney is live in washington with more on thed administration's attempt to restart negotiations. >> reporter: the president knows he needs some democratic support to get the border wall. so his new proposal includes several immigration items the democrats want including daca and tps. the plan gives temporary legal status to 700,000 dreamers who were brought to the country i'll illegally as children and 300,000 ref fe refugees who areg

deportation. both groups would be protected from de deportation for three years. the concessions are causing issues among immigration hard liners in the gop who view them as a form of amnesty. the white house is pushing back. vice president mike pence tried to ease those concerns. >> this is not amnesty. there's no pathway to citizenship. there's no permanent status here at all which is what amnesty contemplates. what this is a good faith effort to address the issue, bring relief to daca recipients. >> reporter: a lot of democrats though are dismissing the plan because the three-year extension is a far call from the permanent solution they want to see. on sunday, senate minority leader chuck schumer said even with the new pros poseal, democrat -- proposal, democratic leaders will not negotiate with the white house until he first

decides to reopen the government. >> if he opens up the government, we'll discuss whatever he offers. but hostage taking should not work. the american people are overwhelmingly against it. the president's poll ratings are plummeting because even his own supporters agree that this is a bad tactic and it's very hard to negotiate when a gun is held to your head. >> reporter: the president's proposal is expected to get a vote in the senate tomorrow. lawmakers from both parties are expected to offer up amendments so there will likely be changes made and at this point it's still too early to know whether or not it actually has a shot at passing in the senate. the house, this point it appears to have no shot. jillian: lots of people waiting to see how this is going to play out. thank you very much. rob: the top democrat on the house homeland security committee is breaking with party leadership, saying he would not discount a wall. >> we will sit with the chief, the president, or whomever and we'll work through it. >> you wouldn't rule out a wall?

>> i would not rule out a wall in certain instances. now, the notion that we can't have barriers is just something that's not true. jillian: house speaker nancy pelosi has called a wall immoral. congressman thompson said he'll democrats are not opposed to barriers but the white house needs a better plan beyond using the wall as a talking point. some lawmakers appear eager to begin negotiations. rob: republicans need a guarantee that the border will be secured before shaking hands. >> conservatives are not bound on this. i think they will give on daca type points a lot. once they're assured, just like the american people, that the border will be secure. i think once guarantee that, we guaranteed it so many times and failed but i think if people really believe it's going to pass that we would have a secure border, they would say sure. when you look at daca, you could say about these daca kids after

they graduate from high school, pass a si citizenship test, sere in the military, something. jillian: some daca recipients say they're being used as bargaining chips. rob: thousands of migrants are accepting asylum in mexico as thousands more push toward the u.s. border. more than 3500 central americans signed up for temporary status in mexico. at the same time, some mexican cities provided busses to more than 2,000 migrants, taking them closer to the united states. yet another caravan left honduras on sunday, this one with about 1,000 more migrants. president trump slamming mexico over the weekend for failing to stop the caravan. jillian: a fox news alert now, a suspect accused of shooting and killing a police officer is charged with capital murder. police say marco perez gunned down officer shawn tudor as he tried to arrest the 19-year-old in mobile, alabama. perez was wanted for faking his

own kidnapping to avoid going to jail for theft. the officer was with the police department for three years and leaves behind a wife. he is the fourth police officer shot and killed on the job this year. and the second alabama police officer killed in a week. rob: another fox news alert on a mild weekend in the windy city. at least four people shot and killed in chicago. a dozen more people hurt in shootings. according to the chicago tribune, at least 54 people have been shot in chicago so far this year, just 20 days in. president trump has threatened to send in the fed to control gun violence in chicago. jillian: you may be feeling it, temperatures across the r northeast dropping to life-threatening lows. some areas dipping down to 35 below zero. boston expected to fall 20 degrees below zero after seeing up to 10 inches of snow. rob: that is serious cold. in upstate new york, more than 20 inches of snow fell.

parts of vermont dealing with at least a foot of snow. so good skiing for the east coast. since friday, more than 4500 flights have been canceled across the u.s. janice is here with a check of the forecast. the storm was a beast. it was all about the line. >> here in new york city we had mostly rain. along the coast, that's where we got the rainfall. interior sections like we told you, they got the bull's-eye, over two feet of snow in parts of upstate new york, close to 2, interior sections of pennsylvania getting over a foot of snow. the storm is gone, behind it the coldest air of the season, it is so cold outside, brutally cold and very dangerous as well. so a lot of folks are off today, kids are off school. that's the good news because you don't want to be outside for long duration of time with wind chills in the minus teens, minus 20s, depending on where you live. here's the forecast today. the storm has moved offshore.

the cold air has set in. it will start to moderate a little bit in terms of temperatures over the next couple of days. the next system is developing across the west. this one will also bring snow across the midwest, the northern plains, could see a mixing across the ohio river valley and then eventually some of the snow will come to the northeast mid-week wednesday, thursday. so stay tuned. rob: win ther winter hath arr. it was hard to get up this morning. >> i'll warm you up. [ laughter ] rob: a baltimore airport security checkpoint is closed until further notice. the tsa blaming a shortage of screeners due to excessive call-outs, people calling in sick over the shutdown. agents have not been paid in weeks because of the government shutdown. 8% of tsa employees missed work across the country on saturday. that's up from just 3% on the same day one year ago.

jillian: today americans nationwide are celebrating martin luther king, junior day on what would have been his 90th birthday. he was one of the most influential leaders in the civil rights movement, fighting tirelessly against racial injustice. he was assassinated in 1968. it is a day on, not a day off. rob: the super bowl is set. what a tremendous sunday it was. two overtime games on championship sunday. >> to the end zone! hello, super bowl, you new england. rob: incredible football, tom brady marching the patriots down the field for that overtime touchdown, beating the chiefs 37-31 in the afc title. jillian: president trump praising them for making it to their third straight super bowl,

tweeting congratulations to the new england patriots team on a great game and season. will be a fantastic super bowl. rob: they will face the l.a. rams, who somehow beat the saints with a 57-yard field goal. they may have the best kicker in the league. they win 26-23. jillian: the saints are claiming they were robbed of a touchdown in the fourth quarter, after the refs admit missing a pass interference call against the rams. so they are not going to forget that one for quite a while. rob: i don't even know you call that a claim anymore. i think that's just factual. i think they got robbed. look at that. they said it was helmet to helmet and pass interference. they should have been at the 5-yard line with the first down. you see, i watch football. jillian: i'm very impressed. i've been bugging him for a year and-a-half to watch football. president trump is laying out another offer to end the shutdown. what makes it different than the

morning. this to me -- the saturday announcement from the president seemed like a very good start and a good compromise. it's surprising that they don't want to counter. >> no, they don't. this is part of politics. politics is the art of compromise. you have democrats that don't even want to put a -- they don't even want to negotiate. i think what has to happen, mitch mcconnell has to bring it to the floor, say we're going to vote, this is your chance to put up or shut up. if you're so concerned about the employees that are not getting paid, here's your chance to end the shutdown. if they vote no on the bill, democrats will 100% own the shutdown. jillian: don't you think at some point it's going to come down to the american people. people will be frustrated seeing the democrats not come forward with anything as far as a compromise goes. >> well, this is the point, jillian. there is no pressure right now. they've not felt pressure to say we have to end the shutdown.

neither side has felt it to the point where they feel like there's political expediency where it might end their political career. i think as more people agitate for it and as they start to do things like this and have votes on the senate floor and really put democrats on the mark, i think the american people are going to understand they don't want to negotiate, they want to resist, they don't want to give trump any wins and they're going to own the shutdown and the american people will say enough is enough, vote on the wall or come up with a deal that you think you can live with. rob: let's look at the evolution of this as it's gone along here with the president and the white house, the first offer was from march of last year, $12 billion, he wanted the solid concrete wall. said no to daca. the second offer, he bumped it up, $25 billion, he wanted the coast to coast wall. he wanted to restrict chain migration and maybe an extension of daca. you go to january of this year, $5.7 billion, now we're talking steel slats. you can see through. and more funds for border

security and we're still at $5.7 billion. the big thing he said for this latest offer -- when he came out, he said it doesn't have to be coast to coast. we just want to put barriers up in these key areas that we need it. that's exactly what democrats have voted for in the past. >> [ laughter ] i know, rob. 2013, they voted for $46 billion, 700 new miles offensing. this is just five years ago. and now they're fighting over $5.7 billion for steel slats. the thing is, some of trump's base is nervous about this deal. i think this is the best deal that you can get right now with republicans and i don't think democrats are going to get a better offer from trump. so they should probably take this or, again, they're going to start owning the shutdown and the american people will know it. jillian: let's spend some time talking about something that you're not really going to see a lot of places right now and that's the fact that stocks are having a pretty good january. >> that's right. the best in the last 30 years. this is -- again, the stock market is not the only indicator that trump's economy is doing

well. obviously we've got the most job openings ever in history, jobless claims at an all-time low. the other thing that's interesting, this is showing -- not only the stock market, but the other indicators, he's winning the trade war with china. china, their growth is slowing down, they're rating their gdp from 6.5 to 6% which in our terms is more like 2%, means a stagnant economy. they're agreeing to lowering tariffs on over 700 american goods. they said they'll bring in more american imports over the next six years, trying to get the trade difference to zero. there are a lot o of indicators that trump is slowly but surely bringing china to its knees. the economy goes down, they go down. i think trump is winning this and he'll bring them to the negotiating table very soon. we're starting to see real movement on that and the stock market is indicating that, as are other things. rob: the stock market had a lot

a catholic student seen in this viral video standing face-to-face with a native american man is speaking out. he said i believe i was helping to diffuse the situation. i realize everyone had cameras and programs a group of adults was trying to bring a conflict. i said a sigh length praye siles would not gel out o get out of . the media rushed in and said he was harassing the native american man. no video shows how it really went down. the teenagers were standing there, being harassed by another group of people. the native american man and others approach the teenagers, some who were quick to judge the kids from kentucky are apologizing. megan mccain said i may reacting too quickly, apologize for being part of a media pile i don't know.

strikes on iranian targets in syria overnight. the israel military confirmed the attack, while warning syrian forces against retaliation. the air raids come hours after israel intercepted an iranian missile launched from syria in broad daylight. the prime minister says he refuses to allow iran to establish itself in syria. turkey offers condolences for the four american heros killed by isis in syria. turkey's president expressed sorrow over their deaths in a call with president trump, that's according to the white house. the four americans were among 19 killed in a suicide bombing in syria last week. the commander in chief was at dover air force base as their bodies r returned to the us on saturday. mike pence offering insight into the upcoming nuclear summit between president trump and kim jong un. >> we'll be laying out our expectation for north korea to take concrete steps to begin to make real the denuclearization

we. rob: the special counsel's office asserting it was not accurate and it was almost entirely incorrect. rudy giuliani saying this is another example of a media out to get his client. >> they should be sued. they should be under investigation. you've got hysteria going on in the media that interprets everything against donald trump. rob: even the vice president is saying the problem is bigger than buzzfeed. >> i think what it says more about is the obsession of many in the national media to attack this president for any reason, for any allegation, for any report in the media. rob: congressman john ratcliffe with an interesting take on the unprecedented rebik rebuke of tt kevel by mueller's team. >> is that just a coincidence or is it something to do with the fact had that happened two days after an attorney general nominee said for the first time, i'm going to grade the special counsel's homework and i'm going

to get to the bottom of all this and bring a fair and expeditious conclusion to this matter. rob: adam schiff said democrats will absolutely investigate the report. we are no closer to a resolution on this than we were when it first came out. jillian: no, we are not. rob: another credibility hit for the media here. what exactly should we make of this? we're going to debate now with matt branerd and robert patillo. thanks for coming on today. here's from the special counsel's office, from peter carr, they never say anything really so for them to come out with a statement was a big deal. buzzfeed's description specific statements to the special counsel's office and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by the office regarding michael cohen's congressional testimony are not accurate. and then you go back to buzzfeed with that basically saying there's a big problem with your story. buzzfeed says we reconfirmed our reporting. we have seen no indication that any specific aspect of story is

inaccurate. we remain confident in what we reported. robert, what do you make of this? >> i think before the conservative launch of the fake news media bandwagon, let's look at the statement from carr. it says there are specific parts of the statement that were inaccurate. it was not a direct reputiaton of the entire story. what wee hav we have seen, the r investigation has been buttoned up. we should wait until we get the full report they until we start saying the buzzfeed article was inaccurate. rob: they don't say much out of the special counsel. for them to come out and put a statement out like this, it sounds like a big part of the sorry musstory must be inaccura. otherwise, why would they care? >> it's a huge condemnation of the story and the aca consider .

stories like this aren't the result of reporters doing careful detective work. the story was fro fecia professd by a source. you start with a media company and sometimes the stories are rejected because of credibility problems. the dumping ground for these stories has been buzzfeed. it gets covered by the rest of the media to then report the story that they would not otherwise put their hands on with the caveat that reported by yobuzzfeed. this is an indictment of the entire media. rob: buzzfeed is not the most credible source for news anyway. but there have been a lot of issues with journalism surrounding the president, his administration. you had the abc, brian ross story that got him suspended, talking about flynn contacting the russians when they were in the candidacy rather than when actually elected, the kids in

cages, the pictures that came from 2014 when obama was the president, you had the $50,000 curtains that were paid for by the obama administration. the cnn and the scaramucci russia thing that led to three cnn journalists resigning. there have been a number of i would say hit jobs that have been false about the administration. what does that do to 2 the credibility of the media. >> we have people that are trying to scoop other people and not doing regular gur journalisc integrity. dan rather lost his career for chasing a story. the news media has to get out of the idea that i'm going to be the person that brings down the administration and report on the federal budget deficit, report on the shutdown, report on things that average americans care about and not the crazy political issues that the fringe wants to address. the reason that people have no faith in the news media, they go

to sources like buzzfeed and the onion, it's because regular journalists are not doing their job anymore. rob: the president tends to call everything negative about him fake news which is not true either. >> i just want to take a moment to agree with my friend here. i agree with everything he said, including putting buzzfeed and the onion in the same sentence. the thing is, we've seen you studies a that show 90% of the media covering the president is negative. so yeah, i get the hyperbole when he condemns fake news media. there's 10% he's not talking about, of course not our friends at fox news. there's so much criticism of him, i think it's justified for his blanket condemnation. rob: i don't think you can blanket condemn the entire media as fake news. he's gets a lot of ammo from the fake stories. >> they keep giving him more. the question that has to be answered, if this story was

jillian: good morning. welcome back. a new york city councilman proposing the street outside the north korean mission in new york city be renamed in honor of the late otto warmbier who died after 17 months in the brutal regime's custody and the proposal now picking up steam. joining us now, joe berelli. tell us how the idea got started. >> new york city has a strange and long precedent of renaming streets in front of u.n. missions and embassies, both to

incite and to praise some of the delegations from around the world. we have named streets against soviet disidens. jillian: why ott he toe? >otto?>> we have secretary pompd the trump administration negotiating a full peace on the north korean peninsula. i think it's important to remember the state of the relationship in 2016 and 2017 and there is no better way to show that than with this tragic life that was taken from us in otto warmbier. jillian: otto was going to come to new york city, that was in his plans, correct? >> the summer after he went to north korea, he had housing and a job lined up. it was his scream to be a new yorker, work -- dream to be a new yorker, work in the finance industry. unfortunately, he made a silly mistake and didn't make it. jillian: we were talking in the break doubt years from now, people will know otto's name
