compromise. reporter: already both sides are pointing to some areas of agreement where they believe there is a deal to be had. >> what we want to support over the next few weeks is the 21st century border security. we are willing to invest in in infrastructure is released or legal points of entry, which as you know is where the majority of drugs coming. we're willing to invest in personnel and additional technology. in the past we have supported enhanced fencing and that is something reasonable that should be on the table. >> or a stock they could take him larger immigration reform as part of a deal but that is something congress has been trying to do for years as well. given the three-week time frame that will certainly be a challenge though certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. kristin: just not a lot of time.

doesn't start off negotiations all that well. are you saying you will never agree to any funding for a wall or some kind of physical barrier at the border? >> no christian. i think we need to get away from the conversation about a wall. you can look at the department of homeland security under democratic and republican administrations were professionals are looking at evidence-based solutions sure there's physical barriers but also an emphasis on technology. use the border region and i should add 3000 physicians congress has authorized and appropriated that aren't even filled. the infrastructure at the ports of entry. so it is a comprehensive approach to border security. the point to be made as physical barriers alone are not the answer. it's a comprehensive approach that does include physical barriers. trent grad like to say something that the acting chief of staff

mick mulvaney said this morning on "fox news sunday." listen to this. >> the president has gone to the democrats and said it is not a 2000-mile sea to shining the wall. it's not a giant 30 for concrete barrier that so many democrats seem to have difficulty with. he even put daca and tps on the table and they refuse to even engage. the better question is what are the democrats willing to do. kristin: i'll pose the same question to you. what are democrats willing to do? what are you willing to compromise? >> it's important to point out that we can have negotiations and talk about compromise is what the federal government shutdown that was impossible. the will of the american people prevail in the government is opening. we need to look at evidence-based approaches. there are professionals who for years understand the border. they are on the border. areas where terrain features are an impediment alone.

there are areas where technology should be used like aerial surveillance, unmanned aerial vehicles. places where you need to have agents on the ground and yes as there are today physical barriers for pedestrian movement in particular movement. there needs to be physical barriers. the point is you are not building a concrete wall. >> even the president has said he would move away from the concrete wall to some fields labs. he's even used the word smart wall. >> the president needs to stop talking because it's not going to be fixed by the president or quite frankly members of congress in terms of us figuring out the answer. professionals are looking at this. they've studied it. officers inspect her general, homeland security back in june of 2017 today lessons learned. guys, we can't rush to border

security. you got to identify requirements come to study alternatives and the presidents rhetoric has suggested no alternative, but some sort of wall or physical barrier. that is the part that is troubling. kristin: so this is going to be negotiated within the bipartisan conference committee. at the end of the day, the 19 days now and the continuing resolution is up, president trump has said it's either some money for a physical barrier or is going to declare national merchant fee. can you tell these folks that were just furloughed are working without pay, are you confident this will not happen again in three weeks? >> democrats are willing to sit down and i do believe there are like-minded consensus among republicans and democrats that we can and we will strike a balance. a compromise on comprehensive border security. it's not grounded in a physical

yet we have not a single charge relating. you have perjury in this case. your personal crime particular to the individuals, but no collusion charges and that would include the roger stone indictment as well. >> the special counsel is so far five for five in terms of a conviction or guilty plea from one of the president's campaign aide or associates. are you at all worried about the impact that this could have heading into 2020? president trump dealing with this pretty bad deal at the government shut down and him forcing to at least give a little bit over the next three weeks and then you have the arrest of roger stone. are you at all worried about what this might mean heading into 2020? >> i'm not worried about this in the slightest. the american people see this for what it is. an obvious witchhunt and a waste of taxpayer dollars.
