published a yearbook photo showing men in black face and a kkk outfit. the virginia governor apologized but much of virginia's political establishment urged him to quit. northam vowed not to resign insisting while he had not been in the black face photo as a medical student, there was another time he did just that. >> i had the shoes, i had a glove and i used a little bit of shoe polish to put on my cheeks. i always liked michael jackson. i actually won the contest because i learned how to do the moon walk. howie: joining us, emily

jashinsky, and capri cafaro. and kristina partsinevelos. christina, northam took plenty of questions. is there a media drum beat saying it's time for him to go? >> it's the first time you have all media outlet's growing on something. every single newscast this morning led with this story. there is an agreement he should step down. the fact that he reversed his story shows a lack of trust. if you want to come out and apologize for it because race is such an important issue, let's bring to the forefront and discuss it. you have all outlet's sensely agreeing on this.

howie: the governor is in a position of saying i didn't pose in black face. but i did as michael jackson. do you want to see my moon walk? >> there is a conversation, i don't think it's a perfect parallel with what we went threw with brett kavanaugh. totally different thing. i think he should resign. i don't think it's acceptable. but at the same time i'll say if your wife has to stop you from moon walking in the middle of an apology press conference, it did not go well. the fact that he was talking about putting shoe polish under his cheeks, it was unbelievable. howie: people are saying it was

35 years ago. he doesn't have a record of racism in office. but all the 2020 campaigns, they say he should resign. >> in virginia, you are only one term. if he tries to ride it out, he only has two years left on his term. this is an issue that's important to democrats going into 2020 where rains diversity is playing a large part in their platform. so democrats will come out saying we want him to resign, even though it's a democrat offending for lack of a better term. this is less about the media coverage and more about the fact this is so egregious democrats and republicans are agreeing.

>> often you have liberal pundits defending a democrat. as you pointed out, even president trump going on twitter says how did the media not discover this when he ran for governor in 2017. and why did it get leaked now? >> i don't think we should focus too much on that. we should be focused on wouldn't we be having a different conversation now. saying that was somebody from the past who is no longer like that. we forgive charlottesville, even president trump during the cam rain he says my african-americans to a supporter in the crowd. it happened before. race has come up. but do we forgive as a society. he lied and wasn't trustworthy. that's the conversation we should be having. howie: this was broken by a

former breitbart journalist. somebody wanted to retaliate against ralph northam for the abortion comments. he was doing a radio interview talking about a bill that he supported that would lift restrictions on late-term abortions in virginia. and he came out and said this. let's take a look. >> if a mother is in labor i can tell you what would happen. the infant would be delivered. the infant would be kept comfortable and resuscitated if that's what the mother and family desired. then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother. howie: the first two days, nothing on nbc, abc, msnbc * and one story on the "cbs evening news." >> this is a case study that

should be held up in journalism school as how not to handle an issue. what happens so often is the media waits until conservatives reacts, then writes stories about conservatives seizing and pouncing on extreme democrat positions. that was completely inappropriate. it was really bad in this particular case. this should be studies by journalism students. howie: look at the way the lead was. it wasn't that ralph northam was considering this. >> virginia's governor responded on a bill to the relift restrictions on late-term

abortions. >> as a legislator. i agreed that it's not a place for an abortion debate. this ways happens when you have complex laws happening at the state law or federal level. there is no question in my mind that there is a significant difference in the conservative-leaning media and mainstream media are covering this issue. whether they talk about it as infanticide on the right or fake news and try to downplay it on the left. we are getting past the facts and core aspects of the bill. howie: "new york times" headline, republicans seize on late-term abortion as a 2020 issue. "washington post," i'll acknowledging republican missteps they double down to pay the ralph northam and democrats

putting the blame there if the market is going down. if you are in a power of leadership position you need to take control, not control, take the blame every once in a while when things don't go your way or when you have leaders in your organization who say north korea and isis could still be a threat, and work together. howie: coats said north korea is likely to retain all of its nuclear weapons. howie: let me play a sound bite having to do -- i want to get into the tribal equality of these debates. one of the president's strongest media supporters is lou dobbs. he said this after dan coats testified on the hill. >> what the hell is wrong with

the dni? he has no political judgment. he has no sense of proportion. what in the hell is he thinking about? howie: wasn't dan coats doing his job with an honest assessment. >> it's not for the dn toirks have a political instinct in this. let's remember this is not the first time president trump and his administration have publicly disagreed. this isn't the first and probably won't be the last. but what strikes me is because the coverage was so on the record, on tape, transcripts, president trump thinks he can say fake news, the concept of fake news has taken such hold in our debate that you can do that in juxtaposition to physically being on record is amazing to me. howie: the president made this point in the super bowl. intelligence chiefs are not

always right. but what fueled this particular media fire was the president's own tweet, passive, naive about people he appointed. it's reminiscent to some degree. fighting the fbi, saying it's doing a lousy job. apparently differing views. >> he named them. he's not taking responsibility. let's put the blame on the media. that's the most of concerning part. the fake news,ed the media is always wrong. we need journalists across the board to do the digging and hold people accountable. i was covering mid-term elections in florida. i went to a ron desantis rally.

rudy giuliani took the stage, booed the media, everybody turned in such venom. the camera guy got spat on. >> the fake news concept taking hold so much, it's dangerous to the institution of journalists. and the fact that the american public totally lost trust. >> it was not a good month for the press. there are fair and legitimate concerns. coming from "buzzfeed." howie: it's been a lousy month for the press and it can be totally negative toward this president more than i have seen. not supporting the booing and viciousness. but you had a polite to some degree between the president and senate republican mitch mcconnell supporting an

crush him. howie: howard schultz is testing the water for a run. what do you make of all these liberal commentators saying how dare you run? >> in any other context i think they would be receptive to howard schultz running. he's socially liberal, fiscally conservative. we are told that's representative of where the centrist thought process of this country ought to exist. in this year this is a situation in which the left which is overrepresented in our media nationally, feels they have the right to every empty donald trump vote. they believe he could take away 3% to 5% of the anti-donald trump vote. that's what makes him inconvenient. i think it's very interesting.

i don't just say that as a person who was a starbucks barista. that was my first job. i think that's ridiculous. the guy -- i think his positioning is really out of touch with the kind of person who could actually beat donald trump. christian anderson has a great piece on the real way to go after donald trump is someone who is a populist when it comes to economic policy and traditionalist when it comes to socialist policy. that's why i think he'll have a problem being a significant candidate in the end. howie: kamala harris did a cnn

town hall and came out for medicare for all. and jake tapper pressed her on how it would work. she said we don't need people going through insurance companies, let's eliminate that. let's just goat rid of people's 150 million private insurance. >> once you start running as a presidential candidate, a lot of these slogans and ideas thrown out as a member of the u.s. senate are going to be judged under new light. how feasible they actually are. in the case of medicare for all. we have seen time and again multiple states going down the road of a single payer program and they can never make the math work. i think this is one of the this we'll see develop over the

course of this campaign. a lot of people are going to roll out these idea and have a new level of evaluation they are going to live up to. howie: we talked earlier in the show about virginia governor ralph northam calling for people to resign over the black face kkk photo. one your writers doesn't agree. people are saying, it's offensive and it was 35 years ago. has this become a media mob? >> it has to a certain extent. i think it's funny this media mob was driven up by this old photo as opposed to the governor's terrible comment earlier this week endorsing letting a baby die after it's born which in my perspective is the position the elites in the democrat party and planned pawrpthood which out of step

with the american people. howie: why did the main real media and news organization completely ignore it rather than having a healthy debate about late-term abortion legislation. >> you and i both know the media is full of people who are extreme on the issue of abortion. they don't like the messy conversation when you look at this in a serious way. the media dismissed the gosnell tory as a local crime story. conservatives are pouncing on the remarks of people in various positions that could be depicted as extreme when the positions they hold are out of step with what the vast majority of americans want. the polls consistently say mayor cans want restrictions on late-term abortions.

when you look at what vafl d --t ralph northam has gone through, itle a bold move to distract from your comments own infanticide. howie: what do you make of the media calls for him to resign and that long rather by door news conferences. >> i have seen a lot of bizarre news conferences. but if i was a major donor to the democratic party in virginia, i would be looking at ralph northam the same way i look at maduro. give him a parachute to get out of that office. what he has con here as embarrassing as it is, it's not necessarily an impeachable offense. but he'll be a drag on virginia democrats going towards.

hispanics in society going back to cesar chavez. why is it so radioactive going back to 1900. >> latinos are like every other immigrant group. they assimilate as quickly as any other immigrant group in our nation. i taught esl to adults and students. there is nobody who wants to learn english more than hispanics in this country. what he was saying is completely inaccurate. i don't think he has taught english as a second language. i don't think he has seen people work in the field then come dirty to a class at night. howie: there have been cutbacks in school english languages a

second language. there is a p.c. police aspect to this. people are saying tom brokaw is racist. there is nothing in his career that supports that. >> they were inaccurate they were insensitive and sounded racist. i think journalism 101. you have to back that up. you have no statistics. if you find them, he was completely wrong as a journalist when it came to this topic. howie: let me move on to the week's big story which is ralph northam, many people on your side saying northam has to resign. where do you and on this? >> well, i think we have to look at kavanaugh. it's like we have short

memories. everyone said. racism is wrong, black face is wrong. if it's over 30 years ago, why are we crucifying him at the same time we are not crucifying kavanaugh. howie: he was a 25-year-old medical student what he's now changing the story and admitting to the michael jackson black face. that's one of the reasons he's getting pounded. >> but he's apologizing. trump has made different comments in the past about certain groups. and we forgive him because he's doing great things for the country. "the washington post" pointed out if we are going to criticize the governor of virginia we need to look at the white house as well. howie: people do change over
