that is all on "seen and unseen," coming up. first, the great disruptor becomes the great unifier. that's the focus of tonight's "angle." ♪ as the president has discovered, being a disruptor has its personal downsides. whether it's the border wall or troop withdrawals from syria and afghanistan, the swap is to holding him back. the antagonism he continues to face from his political opponents is vicious. but as we saw last night, when they are commonly confronted with clarity, they are often flummoxed. trump has co-opted some of their big issues, like their trade, criminal justice reform, in opposition to endless military interventionism. now last night, trump, though, tried to find some common cause. >> we must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of

missed. while they were clearly chanting "usa" is a celebration of themselves, trump got them to take up the refrain usually reserved for his rallies. now for a moment, even the democrats experienced with so many americans around the country's have experienced at a trump rally, a sense of vibrant community, a patriotic chanting together, not something nasty but something positive. our country. the good feelings didn't last too long. npr repaid the residence magnum entity with a phony fact-checkey insisted that the number of women in congress was "almost entirely because of democrats," not trump's party. speaker pelosi attempted to make the same insipid point. >> you've got to acknowledge the 15 republicans and 91 democratsc women in the congress of the united states. isn't it weird to bring this up? >> laura: a woman who looked like she was reading a menu at a

cheer when the president was talking about how unemployment for african-americans, hispanics at all time low. growth for middle income, wage earners, 10-year high. they wouldn't applaud for that because of the bitterness of not being able to acknowledge that donald trump has led the economy and a good direction. laurel, i went to the back, try to look at the arc of democratic opposition, and a start of the moment that president trump was elected. they said "not my president." immediately, fifth avenue, resisters, 18 term that was used against the nazis in france. and i tried to get the elect electoral college to undo the election. he's never had a chance with these democrats, no matter what he does. when you talk about breaking norms in washington, this is a huge part of it. the media doesn't like to talk about that democrats are the ones who led the edge and breaking those. >> laura: the olive branch he

2,006 midterms, a disaster for republicans. you can't blow off the approval numbers. you have to keep them up. i think the speech last night, it did, it showed him as hopeful and optimistic and i think people want optimism about the future of the country. democrats can work with him on it if they are honest. >> laura, you are raising a fundamental issue. make no mistake some of the president numbers are not good. an economy that strong, the president's numbers are quite low. the reason is come because the president has also made himself a bit of a bull in a china shop. everywhere he goes, he brings the china shop with him. it's one thing to be the outsider who came to washington to disrupt. the other as if he goes too far and never allows himself to grow over the middle and to bring an independents and centrists. last night's speech was very good in that sense but it can't just be a once a year events. that is the issue with the president. he's got the base, the base is loyal, the base is solid. i wish he had a base plus
