on sunday afternoon. many people were home enjoying sunday dinner when the tornado spun out of the sky. one alabama coroner expects the number of deaths will rise as search crews comb through rubble and debris. we still have got people being pulled out of rubble said one of the emergency responders and said people will be working all night as a result of those tornadoes. local media puts the death toll much higher than two but we have not independently confirm those numbers. the public information officer for the county alabama emergency management agency says there is a lot of lots of life and injury but they cannot confirm specific numbers at this time but they have numerous search and rescue operations in the county in particular there is

tornado emergencies in alabama and georgia and also tornado warnings in florida and south carolina. even the towns of charleston and columbia are under tornado watches this evening. it is a favorable environment for tornadoes as a huge squall moved through the area big mature storms with low level wind is very strong that tends to get things spiraling and that is apparently what has happened on this early day in march. between six and eight people reported the injured so far but the number of dead have not been confirmed. again many of the buildings that were crushed are still being searched tonight and

obviously when there is not very much power, power lines have been torn down, power poles snapped and uprooted it is difficult for the rescuers in the darkness to do a thorough search very quickly. it will likely be morning or even later tomorrow before we know precisely how many have been killed in lee county i'm sorry lee county alabama as a result of the huge tornado hitting there this afternoon. more than 42000 homes and businesses without electricity and reports of wide spread damage in southeastern alabama as well tornado warnings posted across alabama florida georgia and south carolina as the storm system raged through. radar and video evidence shows what look like a large tornado

and about six hours ago in the corner said about 151st responders out there in the county i'm sorry the spokeswoman says sadly that we have two known confirmed fatalities and many, many injuries local media reports say as many as ten have taken place and worst of the damage although it appears to have been this afternoon, there are still storm warnings that is particularly terrifying. people are being urged to listen to the weather media and listen to what's going on outside and ready to go into

the storm shelters in alabama if that becomes necessary. two people known dead many others injured but there could be as many as ten or more fatalities and that is a local media is reporting. the number of dead expected to rise the cord on - - according to the lee county coroner. people are still being pulled out of rubble as they attempt to rescue anybody that they can and assess how many fatalities have already taken place it has not been verified that it has hit but it is unmistakable that has been seen as a result smashed buildings and rooftops blown

away, cars overturned, debris tossed everywhere. that is just in the area of alabama. i mentioned last hour georgia was also struck by very powerful straight-line winds or a tornado. youth bowling tournament was underway at fort benning at the time. sixty young people had to shelter in the back of the bowling alley because it was being torn apart by the high winds. once again come at least two killed by a possible tornado in alabama. many others injured after tornadoes continue to tear through several states. 150 people are working right now in lee county and we just got word one sheriff is confirming the dead at the state stands at 14.

that was the worst fears being realized by authorities after a huge tornado tears through the county. we are now being told that at least 14 people are dead. jonathan has an update for us now. lies on the situation there. >> good evening. this is a nasty storm system prickle i was an alabama covering an unrelated story over the march over the bridge in selma alabama then midday there was a torrential downpour and the tornado siren started to go off there was a warning in the area. now weather just before the march across the bridge was to begin and no reports of any significant damage in the area but with the alabama and

georgia state line to see the damage with those heavily damaged buildings and then in central georgia and fox five atlanta they don't believe there was injuries a storm shelter was completely leveled to the ground so a very powerful storm system moving to the southeast. >> the tornado damage leaving a path of destruction several miles long and one fourth of a mile wide.

that is rubble one - - incredible to me. so what about trying to make sure that that they get some health? what is happening with the first responders? . >> it is still very active in the corner has indicated there may be a death toll increasing as they continue searching the wide area. and if this path extended 65 miles you will see the search and rescue efforts continue into other communities in alabama and georgia. obviously working well into the night. >> now we are getting into severe weather season.

unfortunately this is one of the worst sites of what is to come. are you seeing any of the damage of where you are around the montgomery area? . >> montgomery wires left relatively untouched the skies were ominous there was a torrential downpour with a tornado siren but did not see any damage in this part of the state where i am right now but that's a different scene along the alabama georgia state line and this tornado was on the ground apparently for 65 miles. >> stay safe and bring us updates.
