keep in mind he lost to ted cruz. brian: vanity fair has a huge article and feature on him. almost as if they helped launch his campaign. here is a quote from it. he says i want to be in it, man, i'm just born to be in it he point out he has this huge library as if it's a big plus that he reads books. we would assume that and all the presidential libraries there a writer there is a sense he belongs on that. as if a book of a president is going to be in there a lot of charisma and presence. one of the reasons he is not running for senate because he personally gets along with senator john cornyn did not relish the fact of running against him. i know abraham lincoln did it very tough to lose an election for the senate and then try to get the ultimate prize and that's the presidency. ainsley: he said his biggest vulnerability is being a white man in a democratic party that's yearning for a woman or a person of color. what's different he was complimenting some of the other candidates in the democratic party in the article. but he says he is a youthful

uniter, he is willing to listen and learn from right wing voters and he is willing to work with republicans, he says. steve: keep in mind, he is from down in texas. what does he stand for? well, he has been in the u.s. congress. he has had some posts in local politics down in el paso. here are some of beto o'rourke's positions. while the president of the united states is for the wall. beto o'rourke is against the wall. he voted against ice. he voted against kate's law and voted against trump tax cuts there is more. saints. ainsley: he is for single pair healthcare. voted against long-term abortions voted against sanctioning iran and called law enforcement the new jim crow. brian: if he is elected he wants to take up the barrier. take out the fence. man, you talk about a different policy when it comes to borde border control.

what has to happen. brian: go ahead. >> what has to happen is whether it's state laws or county laws that created this, that's our problem and those need to be changed immediately and that's what we are asking for. brian: are you against the sanctuary city theory that if you tell people they are not going to be deported they will be more honest about unsavory characters amongst them? >> if there is violations in regards to violent crimes, whether it's the sanctuary state laws, whether it's certain county laws throughout california and across this nation, they absolutely need to be deported after serving their time. ainsley: if you look at what he has been accused of in the past, possession of methamphetamine, kidnapping, burglary, if he were in our country legally, would he be behind bars and would she still be alive today? >> absolutely.

that's one of the things beto o'rourke talks most about he actually lives in el paso a couple of blocks from mexico. pete: what we know is beto loves beto. he believes he is the second coming of who should come for president. he wants to tear down the border wall. he believes in sanctuary cities. he doesn't support -- this is a guy who sees the world completely opposite of president trump. down on the border. believes illegal immigration is okay. actually the lifeblood of this country. he will define that debate. he have some supporters, he will. i don't know how he ultimately different united states himself. brian: what's attractive about him if people really believe he could deliver texas. if he delivers texas that reconfigures the map. pete: he didn't defeat ted cruz. not clear how he would defeat president trump in texas in 2020. ainsley: or even a joe biden. pete: border will be a big issue. today a big vote in the senate whether or not to uphold the president's

emergency declaration. i had a chance to sit down with the vice president mike pence in west virginia there is a training facility for customs and border protection down there. looks like we are sitting in the woods. actually sitting in a training facility for our border agents. i asked him. he had a stark message for senators republican senators what this vote means about whether you support the president and security on the border. take a listen. >> what did you see here today? >> this training facility is where our custom and border protection personnel train through virtual reality and in real circumstances to make sure that the people that are on the front lines have the background, the experience to protect our border and come home safe. >> couple of guys in suits out in the woods. recently on capitol hill, the president declared a safety emergency on the border to get access to funds to build the wall that congress wouldn't build. what is your message to senators on capitol hill, it's republicans at this point wavering on whether to

vote on this. >> it's undeniable it we have a crisis on our southern border. now, democrats continue to say that it's a manufactured crisis. but the facts tell the story. what we want to see the senate do this week is to stand with the president to stand with the president's declaration of a national emergency. look, a vote against president trump's national emergency is a vote against border security. a vote against the president's national emergency declaration is a vote to deny the humanitarian and security crisis that's happening at our southern border. so we're urging every member of the senate. set politics aside. recognize that we have a crisis. the president has the authority under the national emergencies act and vote down the resolution of disapproval, stand with the president and stand for border security. that's what the american people want. pete: do you see any crisis and legitimacy of a wall that has to be built through emergency funding? is this something the democrats will continue to

rail against? tear down the wall? >> you have to understand that the funding the president requested throughout the government shutdown, the funding that we are appropriating now under the law through the national emergency is all funding that the department of homeland security told us that they needed to construct a physical barrier, a wall in 10 areas of high density population. where the people wearing the green uniforms of customs and border protection have told us that they need a barrier to do their job and to do it safely. pete: there is some reporting about an event yesterday aei put on, vice president cheney had an interview with you. and he came after you and made some comments about how this administration's foreign policy seems more like the obama's administration talking about nato and a pullout from syria. your response so some of those criticisms from former vice president cheney? >> well, look, i have great respect for vice president cheney woe had a good

vigorous debate over this past weekend. look, i told him when president trump ran for office, he made it clear that he is no fan of foreign deployments. that he wanted to brings an end to these endless wars. i know there are some who don't like the fact that the president has called on our nato allies to pay their fair share of our common defense to live up to their commitments, but, i just know that the american people appreciate. pete: there are many who do like that. >> a president who looks at our allies and says, look, we are going to do our part, you need to do your part. and that's what we call being a leader of the free world. pete: absolutely. sticking with vice presidents, joe biden former vice president may get in the race. he famously called you a decent guy and he took some heat for it your take on biden possibly getting into the race? >> well, look. they have an awfully big field on the other side. the reality that you see on the democrat side is it's largely being driven by the most extreme liberal elements in their party. and the way joe biden caved

he is either stepping down because his part of the probe, manafort is now over. he didn't get all the jail-time they wanted him to get and it's over. he will sit in federal prison and presumably be tried here in new york. that's one way to look at it the other way to look at it is this is coming to an end. perfect storm. manafort, flynn, weissmann leaving. that would mean bill barr there. rosenstein leaving. that would mean that the mueller report or reports, i believe there will be more than one, are likely to come out soon. two ways to look at this. steve: while mueller's name is on the probe it's weissmann's whose name is. >> judge: set most tenacious and skillful trial lawyer on their team. brian: a democrat. judge: is he a democrat. bob mueller is a republican that wind indicate he wouldn't be the trial lawyer on the roger stone case which is presently scheduled to be tried in october.

seven months from now. ainsley: what about paul manafort he got a little more than seven years. judge: this is a very unusual situation for manafort. when he pleaded guilty in federal court before judge jackson who sentenced him yesterday, the guilty plea was last year, the nature of what he said acknowledged not only that he committed bank fraud and mortgage fraud that violated federal crimes but also that violated state crimes. stated differently, the indictment that was revealed yesterday by a grand jury here in new york city, he has effectively already admitted to the behavior that he has been accused of under that it will be very easy for them to prosecute him. why did they do it? they are worried that the president might pardon him and the president does not have pardon power for state crimes. brian: what is it new york's business for? they don't have enough on their plate. judge: they do have a lot on their plate, brian. these are new york banks that he committed the fraud in front of or against for a new york mortgage.

who didn't know what their parents were up to. brian: i think it's finite number of kids that didn't know what their parents were up. to say plus, if the kids got in without knowing, they will get kicked out without knowing. if they are going to school right now no way those kids should stay. in doubles down the insult. mark riedel is also in trouble. the harvard guy in his 30's now who actually played tennis at harvard who basically has taken the test for all these guys at the img academy. steve: he was 36 years old. he shows up to take a test for a high school kid. then again, you have to keep in mind the proctors in some cases were actually in on the deal. brian: $200,000 they got. ainsley: a family in new york. they spent $125,000 for their daughter. listen to how they got the proctor. they paid this proctor to change her scores on act and sat. steve: what was it originally. ainsley: her original sat score was 23 out of 36. perfect score was 36. he changed it to 35 or she.

counselor who says that you know, not rich and famous parents bribe and cheat and lie all the time to try to get their kids into school. the quotation is i knew parents who whipped up a charity for their kid and did a fake photo shoot with disabled children. the parents set it all up and said the kid raised all the money but truly it was a single donor the parents it was just a scam to get the kids into college. it's not just the rich and famous. it's everybody is trying to help their kid get into a college. ainsley: what good does that do? what does it teach the child lie your way. steve: cheat the system. brian: did i sell most of my daughter's girl scout cookies. steve: i sold all my daughter's girl scout cookies. brian: what kind of lessons. ainsley: i sold all of my own. steve: i sold 300 boxes. everybody knew i wasn't a girl scout at the time. tomi lahren had this observation about the elites. >> this is really bigger than just a scandal.

you personally or professionally even about your family, how do you turn down the internal emotion meter? >> it's difficult to do. it definitely requires a lot of practice. but basically it's a matter of trying to shelf that initial feeling and understand that i'm feeling emotion, i can't react emotionally or i will say something i will regret. brian: what's wrong with reacting emotionally. >> look at politics right now. you will see the problem with that unfortunately emotions you are making bad decisions that way. brian: you also say i guess in the marines they scream at you and try to get personal and want you to overact and that's part of boot camp. you say you have to be willing to suspend your disbeliefs. what do you mean? >> i mean go back to the current political environment, unfortunately there is a total inability to suspend the disbelief. you believe, you believe what i believe. i don't want to hear anything. stop talking. i believe it, you are not changing my mind. that's a problem. brian: how do i change that? >> you have to internally find a way to take your belief and set it aside and try to understand where somebody else is coming from a logical standpoint. brian: how do the marines put that into you? >> they beat it into us

hour. what else did you do? >> we went into the woods and training facility which is a customs and border protection training facility. before we were in the woods with the vice president he was taking a tour of this facility talking to border patrol agents and other folks. kirstjen nielsen who is the secretary of homeland security was there with us. this is a debate. is it an emergency or not. how should the senate vote? what's happening down there with increases. we asked her all about it take a listen. >> madam secretary, thank you so much for joining "fox & friends." we appreciate it? >> my pleasure. thank you for being here. pete: as you know there is a big vote in the u.s. senate about the president's emergency declaration on building the border wall. your take on where that sits right now. >> i think it's a moving target. i know what i have been talking to members of congress about which is in my mind it boils down. it can be complicated first blush but it boils down to two questions. dolls the president have authority to declare an emergency? he does. it's statutory authority. the congress gave him in the law. and secondly, is there an

emergency? and i could certainly talk to you and anyone who is willing to listen about how that is definitive and resounding yes. pete: this administration putting a focus on the border. yet, we are seeing apprehensions go up. why is that happening? >> it's interesting. if you boil it down, it's congress, courts and criminals. of the criminals have found a way to take advantage of the situation. they are trafficking, smuggling, they are preying on the migrants, they are also selling them a bill of goods. we have had some unfortunate court decisions. they clearly did not understand either the authorities in some cases but more importantly the operational effects of the security concerns. and then three congress fails to act. this is not a partson issue. not partisan to want to protect communities and not partisan to want to secure our border or homeland. and, yet, in this environment, congress refuses to act. pete: recently you took a lot of tough questions from mostly from the left side of the aisle. your critics of the approach of this administration, what are they getting wrong about

how you're approaching border security and things like family separation. they keep talking about cages. what are they missing in your approach? >> well, two things. one, i would say we are a law enforcement agency. so we enforce the law. you know, i said it before. but i really fear for our democracy when the body who creates the laws it telling the body who enforces the law just don't enforce the law. if they don't like the law they should change it the men and women at the department of homeland security have sworn an oath to protect communities to secure the homeland and to enforce the law that congress passed. the second one is there is just a lot of misunderstanding. many of the policies and the ways in which cbp has been protecting our community for decades are the same they are suddenly political and partisan. these are the professionals done this for 20, 30 years often at risk to their own lives. they say this is what we need to do to protect the border. pete: thank you so much. >> thank you. steve: pete's great

interview. this is clearly a full-court press by the administration to get as many republican senators later today to vote against the. pete: all the way. they are trying to make that zero sum vote. if you vote against us, forget about the precedence argument or idiosyncrasies. either you are with the president on border security. you want that wall, period, or you are voting against it the point to make good luck going back to your district or state as a republican senator in this trump era. steve: to explain that. pete: to explain you voted against the president trying to build the wall he said he would bring. a lot of pressure. a lot of people think it will go against the president. we shall see how it actually unfolds today. that's a tougher vote for some senators to take. brian: most about what's going on with kirstjen nielsen treat her with such disrespect on the hill. message carried what's going on with the border. they hit her with personal attacks. pete: spite. you watch the testimony against her. it's dripping with condescension. they are angry. and they take every bit of

brian: speaking of the planet. ed: he has as much a chance as 20 or 30 other people who have gotten in. this idea that because he came close in texas that texas is in play in a presidential election seems like a stretch. but, where i hesitate is, look, this guy has an it factor that republicans shouldn't sleep on. he met with barack obama before jumping in. democrats want to fall in love again. they want to find somebody who going to be a great hope. steve: did a show with oprah. >> they are all in on that idea. i have to tell that you president trump has to be licking his chops of facing someone like this who has no accomplishments in the house. runs for the senate. his big ticket is i lost. i came close to beating ted cruz. yeah, he raised a lot of money and a lot of excitement. again, i don't want to minimize that is what i want to say is if you want to run against president trump who stood o up for forgotten man and woman. do you want to be on the cover of vanity magazine?

brian: he says is he a generational shift like jfk and honesty and decency of jimmy carter. ed: in the video he says i'm going to run a relentlessly positive campaign. why is he doing that? he wants this election, beto o'rourke to be a reaction to president trump. and the idea that, look, president trump is on the attack. he is on the attack. i'm going to be relentlessly positive. problem is we know from house campaign, senate campaigns and presidential races negative politics tend to work. and so this -- can a relentlessly positive candidate win? this president in 2016 first in the republican primary defined all of his opponents to the point that he tore them apart. so can beto survive? ainsley: in the article he talks about how he is k. unite republicans and listen to them. when the rubber hits the road, tough look at how they vote. he was anti-border wall, voted against ice, voted against kate's law and trump tax cut. supports single pair healthcare. voted against restrictions.

ed: i'm trying to see how he reaches across the aisle. you make a good point, ainsley. it's deeper than that. >> think about what happened when the president had his event down in el paso. no accident that he did it in beto's backyard, perhaps. some say he was trying to knock beto out early. wowrnt rally. there was a dispute who had more people. all of that two interesting things. beto o'rourke had this fencing around the stage where he was and everything and like okay, so you need a fence and security and all that around you but you don't want a border wall. and then, remember, did he an interview after all of that which when he said i don't want to juxtapose new wall i want to tear down what's there tearing down what barack obama supported, chuck schumer, nancy pelosi basically. he wants to go further extreme to the left on the wall than anybody else in this race. that's going to be hard for middle america. steve: is he in middle america. is he in iowa today for the next two days. so let's see what happens. see you this weekend. brian: still ahead on our show if i read the rundown

is the worst person ever and conservatives are just like well, i will watch something else. politics is downstream from pop culture. and if conservatives don't get involved in the culture, it's going to be bye-bye country. ainsley: you know, i wonder if they even realize it because they live in new york, they live in hollywood. but you are a conservative, you travel the country for your tour. we are all from, rural areas where we do hear from people who say they miss the johnny carsons of this world. do you think the late night hosts even realize it because they surround themselves with people just like them. >> yeah. great point. they don't realize it and they are not -- they are not preaching to the entire choir of america. they are just going to continue -- they are fighting over the table scraps that's left over. they are all competing for the same anti-donald trump, anti-conservative audience. i will tell you the good for donald trump he is giving these guys a career. i don't know what they are going to do in 2024 when he

nancy pelosi rejecting any compromise, tweeting in an effort to voting in favor of house's resolution to eliminate trump's fake emergency, gop senators are allowing trump to violate constitution just this once. the house will not take up the legislation to give president trump a pass. here to discuss, house minority leader kevin mccarthy. you have four, five, maybe more republicans voting with democrats against the president. your reaction, leader mccarthy? >> very disappointed in those four, you got to understand the president has the authority to do this. just the sheer argument inside the senate republican conference saying they want to change the law proves the president has the authority. think for a moment, is there an emergency? 72,000 people were caught coming across the southern border illegally in february. 11-year high. we know from the drugs that are coming across. we know the challenges of what is happening. he has the authority to do this, if you believe in the rule of law, you would uphold it.

even if they win today, and they send to it the president's desk, he will veto it. i make this promise to you, to the american public, we will uphold that veto in the house. it will go, and president will have the ability to do it. brian: leader mccarthy, isn't he right, you guys left him in a lurch. two years you had power of the house never gave him billions or five billion he needed to get significant things done on the wall? >> let's make sure your viewers know what the truth is. in the house we passed five billion. in the senate it takes 60 votes. this is the real challenge, everybody says you had the house, senate, the presidency, yes, but the way our government works 60 votes -- brian: you had to put the five billion in last minute, it wasn't there originally? >> we passed it in the house, let's give credit where credit is due. the house republicans passed five billion. it was schumer who stopped it, got us into a shutdown. brian: beto o'rourke running for president, made it official.

you worked with him. what is he like on the floor. has he made a big impact? >> he served in the house. i served with him. to be honest i can't remember one speech he gave on the floor or one bill that he passed. it is remarkable that his rise that he is now running for president because, i can't remember something he has done in the house. he just lost a race for the senate. so on the democratic party means you're capable or really the person who should run for president. brian: former speaker of the house paul ryan made a statement couple days ago if the president runs on his personality, he will lose. he has to run on issues. he kind of walked it back, what reaction to the former colleague? >> paul called after that, he tried to walk through what he said he was going through. he was trying to make the point this president has such a very strong record. he is going to win re-election. i believe this president wins on every aspect what he is able to do. and think for one moment, we're at 3.8% unemployment. i think what the president said he would do. get us to 3% growth at the time

persuade to agree with them on these policies. now this particular case, because stories like, there is no excuse for it. nine times the police chief, eddie garcia said nine times i.c.e., that detainer had been applied for by i.c.e. it was ignored by the county. on the 10th time, now after he murders this poor woman, bambi larson, then on the 10th time, finally county officials decide we should work with i.c.e. we have a guy deported repeatedly. he was last convicted, he had a couple other criminal convictions in recent months, in 2016 battery on officer. in 2015, methaphetamine, all kinds of drugs of the his rap sheet is so long, why are sanctuary city advocates making excuses for thugs like these? ainsley: dana, as a woman, imagine what she went through as she was taking her last breath? he stabbed her to death. she had a son. she reported him stalking her

and other people in the neighborhood, according to the police union president we interviewed earlier. you know what he said that is so awful, this guy is illegal, therefore he was let out. if he were legal, he would still behind bars and she would still be alive. that is so messed up. >> yeah it is absolutely messed up. there is no, there isn't a priority over innocent citizens where it concerns innocent citizens versus these criminal, illegal aliens. that is the correct legal term. everyone needs to get familiar, refamiliarize with using it, none of this undocumented nonsense. you're here illegally, that is a misdemeanor but still a crime. he stalked the woman. he knew where the security cameras were. he tried to make sure he was out of view of the security cameras. this is methodical. this guy's rap sheet, dangerous individual, many taken lives of innocent people. innocent people are paying in blood for the sanctuary cities policies that democrats
