joining us. mollie hemingway and sara fischer. because it shows no criminal conclusion, what judgment will history render on the media coverage. mollie: the media had an tint after their coverage of the 2016 election to do a good job covering a man they had trouble covering during the primary and the election. but they went right into a deranged conspiracy theory that held the country hostage for two years. their credibility was already very bad and it's unclear if they will be able to return from this. howie: are you saying the

media -- mollie: they were being fed by others. it was a secretly funded operation by hillary clinton and the democratic committee. and they leaned right into it. this is a broad failure by the media and other people. howie: the media reported on mueller's 37 indictments. would you agree that russian collusion, how many times did we hear trump say no collusion. philippe: i know none of the three us or our 2 millionish viewers knows what's in this report. we know one thing, it's over. we need to read it.

mollie first is criticizing conspiracy theories, that hillary clinton is financing and there is a cabal of people behind everything that happened. the people behind what happened is donald trump. true conspiracy theories are uranium one, seth rich. there is no one including this network that is innocent on the front of boring into something. i would argue what's going on the last two years is the most of important constitutional problem we have had in 20 years and much longer. we are not talking about what russia did to us. and what we are doing about it. to this day donald trump refuses to acknowledge it happened. howie: i want to stay with this. sara, there was a drum beat over white house aides, ivanka, don,

jr., michael cohen. did the media give the collective impression the president was hiding a disastera dasdardly deed? sara: when you give viewers the impression it's going to be bigger than it is. the media will have to figure out what do we do. we see media and anchors use the words the report might disappoint. saying disappoint, isn't that an indictment in itself. howie: peter baker from the "new york times" said it's a moment of reckoning. he says have journalists connected too many dots that don't add up.

mollie, the last two years you have taken a definite view of this investigation, to be up against a media machine that has often pushed back against you and "review" and dismissed you as defending trump. mollie: it's almost difficult to describe what it was like to be a skeptic, particularly early on in january 2017 when this hysteria got going. everybody decided it was logical to explain the 2016 election by saying donald trump conspired with the russians to steal it. catherine herridge did a wonderful job. kimberly strassel. i was put up against anybody for a critical look at the per theory and how it was

promulgated by the media. but it was difficult and it took a lot of courage it is shocking how many people didn't believe the conspiracy theory. philippe: it's like we are doing an oral history of what this time period was like. tomorrow we could be talking about the narrative of the report xyz and you won't give an inch that anything happened here. mollie: it's over. philippe: you saying it on fox doesn't make it so. he's under investigation by 17 other entities including the southern district of new york. mollie: we weren't fed a theory he was being investigated for his business dealing. we weren't fed a theory that he was surrounded by -- philippe: he was investigated by

the house intelligence committee. mollie: we were told he was a traitor who excluded with russia to steal the 2016 election. if so there would be dozens of indictments. philippe: 34 people have been indicted. mollie: not a single indictment had to do with the animated theory that we had a traitor colluding with russia. howie: the media moved away from the collusion part. as it was clear mueller was wrapping up. the media spotlight seemed to shift to obstruction. why did he fire comey? did he explore firing rosenstein. or mueller? which could be important, obstruction of justice. but it's not the same as colluding with russia. the russians were clearly

obstructing the election. sara: there is a lot of unanswered questions like obstruction of justice. that's why democrats want to see everything revealed publicly. that's why they say they want full transparency. even if there is no collusion are russia, doesn't mean we can walk away from other potential bad crimes. mollie: to move to obstruction raises the issue. when you saw the coverage of donald trump saying there is no collusion. people would say it sounds like he is obstructing justice. the options are he was a traitor or innocent. philippe: an innocent man acts innocently who does not fire people and obstruct. mollie: there is transparency

about all sorts of this investigation. philippe: donald trump is not an innocent. he has brought on a tremendous amount of this himself by refusing to cooperate. howie: i have got to jump in here. a fox poll out today says 52% to 36% people approve of the mueller investigation. are you willing to say that mueller, the former fbi director making no public statements or grandstanding, doing his business and wrapping up without questioning the president conducted himself like a professional prosecutor? mollie: the way the indictments were handled with the explosive lang to end up with no indictments related to

collusion. the -- you can be someone with a mixed history like robert mueller. he botched the anthrax investigation. fill rrl she can't answer a -- philippe: she can't answer a simple question about whether mueller did his job. you won't say mueller did a good job if you don't like what's in the report. mollie: there are legitimate concerns about the way he handled the investigation. howie: special prosecutors are criticized for never giving up. mueller has wrapped you have and should the media give him credit for that. sara: for being done after 19 months? howie: for not turning this into

have a great day. the "new york times," with mueller's reporting the interest turns to new york. meaning the federal prosecutors in new york and their investigation. if there is no bombshell, will they go to what about this? the other investigations the investigations in the house. or will they take a breath and move on. sara: this is a key moment for 2020. the narrative splits. we haven't seen the report yet but we are seeing these headlines. the narrative for democrats is hold off. even if there are no indictments here. there are field cases in new york that we have to keep our eye on the ball. howie: the you just wait. as i promised earlier. there has been substantial coverage much of it on the right

about president trump's attacks on institutions. has there been enough media attention to the problems with the investigations themselves? mollie: competing theories, one that donald trump was a trait tore and you need -- was a traitor and you needed to put spies in his campaign. the other theory is that would be a bad thing to do. that the department of justice did a bad thing when they took this information from hillary clinton and the democratic national committee. philippe: and the republican party. mollie: there are other things we haven't begun to investigate and cover properly. the way this investigation got going was in part because of people leaking selective information to media outlets.

we have criminal leaks about people which have not been well investigated or well covered. we have james comey who took documents he shouldn't have taken. christopher steele who invented the dossier lying to the fbi. glenn simpson, the guy who managed it flying congress. howie: having the media, let's be candid, should have been more outraged in president trump undermining his attacks on law enforcement and his own attorney general. philippe: cth ,th , and chris wallace a couple hours ago saying we have more to see. i think there is a balance. in simple terms the news covers

what's happening. on the law enforcement front, until two months ago the democratic party was in the desert. we were watching. the special counsel is created by the deputy attorney general who is a trump appointee who worked for jeff sessions who is a trump appointee. i would understand these accusations a little bit more if the democrats were in the world. but we don't. the problem with law enforcement i think 25-50 years from now we'll all suffer for. there are two institutions important to american society. law enforcement which is part of the government and media which is not. they have both been decimated in terms of credibility and we'll all suffer for that. mollie: in the past we had law enforcement failing to do a good job and the media held them

accountable. because of the unevenness in the way the fbi is handling one campaign versus others. there is much effort to be done to hold them accountable. i think our media are in no place to do that. philippe: jim comey a week before the election said hold on, we found one more hard drive. howie: let's not relitigate that. howie: it's how much bill barr should reveal. that's going to play out the next few days. joy reid, 16 hours after attorney general bill barr got this report from the mueller office says trump controls the justice department. if this a.g. is not recused, it feels like a cover-up.

job. but i think he's doing a tremendous disservice to a wonderful wife. i call him mr. kellyanne. >> dose want you to step -- does he want you to step down? >> certainly. but what message does that send to women who are independent thinkers. howie: you can't expect the journalists to ignore the story when the president of the united states is calling his top aide's spouse the husband from hell. and he's taking jabs at john mccain. maria: he can't punch back. president trump: i don't talks about it.

look at the coverage, the reporting, the analysis and the commentary on the mueller report. joining us. ben domenech and richard fowler. we are almost in parallel universes. much of the media has been hammering on day after day make it sounds like the president was in severe danger of indictment and being run out of washington. then you have defenders, some on fox echoing his attacks on bob mueller, and the doj and fbi. ben: i think the media needs to look at itself and ask to your point earlier did we connect too many dots here? were we misled in a way that we hyped up this story to a degree and led the american people to

believe things that weren't true. two weeks ago you had the former head of the cia john brennan intimating on air he thought more people would be going to jail from the white house. we have to understand how much damage this does to the credibility of everyone involved. if people come to view the institutions and law enforcement in the country being led bipartisan hacks who can't be trusted, people like andrew mccabe. that will be a negative when it comes to around ability to trust the institutions going forward. the media as well. they hyped up this thing to respond to those in their audiences who were putting too much faith in this. that they would be rescued from this presidency who were opposed to him by these forces who would remove the president from office. this past week there was a

report from the associated press about the number of americans who named hair new pets after bob mueller. howie: i hate when anybody in the public light predicts indictments. richard, even if mueller found no criminal collusion or wrongdoing by donald trump personally. are conservative commentators justified in portraying his attacks on law enforcement as a necessary part of this debate? richard: that's interesting. for a very, very long time it was democrats and people on the liberal side of the country that had a problem with law enforcement and the fact that law enforcement is not accountable and transparent. on the other side you have conservatives defending law enforcement.

now that president trump is in the white house that narrative has begun to shift. at the same time i think it caused those in the liberal camp to say there are times when law enforcement is doing the right thing. what we have seen from this investigation and robert mueller is a team who has done no leaks, no press conferences. they have done their work for 22 months. they indicted 37 people for real crimes. howie: whether you look at it journalistic all or publicly. how do you look at success if it brings down more trump associates. ben: hook, line and sinker. you had news organizations advocating in a way that was

irresponsible that went far beyond to your point about speculation, it went so far beyond that you had people assuming this was going to happen. you had the commentary from elizabeth warren about whether he would be in jail going forward. law enforcement to richard's point, running the risk of becoming so weaponized and a tool for partisan entities. in the future there will be a lack of trust. i'm sceptical of those organizations. i think we have to be even more sceptical of sources in media that ran with stories before being debunked. richard: i think it's irresponsible for the president of the united states to challenge his intelligence agencies and the fbi. howie: what if they are wrong in

the case of the george w. bush and the wmds? richard: fair. but they are trying to make this out as if it's a political conspiracy to take down the president. the reason we have a mueller investigation to begin with. james comey had a counter-intelligence investigation. trump fired james comey during this counter investigation that triggered this investigation. howie: ted koppel came out this week and said donald trump is right, the establishment press is out to get him. stories like this. trump's problems are far from over. will we see when the special report comes out, any reflection, soul searching or mea culpa? ben: i will be waiting to see

the first person saying i went too far, i believed sources i shouldn't have trusted. i spun a story with a narrative behind it that this report does not live up. i will be curious who does say that. richard: there are other investigation. there is in the michael cohen investigation. in that investigation donald trump is person number one who engaged in paying off a porn star. howie: so much of the media was focused on mueller and indictments. richard fowler great to see you. ben, stick around. when we come back we'll talk about what happened this week between president trump and john mccain. stay with us.

president trump: i endorsed him at his request and give him the kind of funeral that he wanted. which as president i had to approve. i don't care about this. i didn't get thank you. that's okay. we sent him on his way but i wasn't a fan of john mccain. howie: this has triggered a campaign of criticism. >> you stepped on your own message and gave needless fodder to your he anies by talking about john mccain and george conway. >> i think if i had told my dad 7 months after your dead you will be dominating the news and all over twitter. he would think it was hilarious that our president is so jealous of him that he would be

dominating the news cycle. howie: you became part of the family when you married meghan mccain. ben: i referred to megyn when it comes to reacting to these moments. we all do. this was not a good week to experience the kind of flurry of hatred that gets thrown after you when the president of the united states attacks you. just to be clear and with no offense to you, howie. john mccain didn't give a rat's ass what donald trump thought of him in life. these two men never got along. there was a lot of animosity and tension between the two of them. but in this instance the president is wrong about what he's saying. by the time john mccain handed this dossier over to james

comey. he did not hand it to the media, he handed it to james comey. the senator referred to that document to me as a hot potato he was happy to get out of his hand to give it to law enforcement. i think the president is just wrong in attacking him and suggesting this investigation was spun up from the senator. what we know from the testimony handed over in this case that was disclosed -- howie: you anticipated my counter argument. these guise couldn't stand each other. mccain ripped trump atr in his book and he wasn't invited to the funeral. ben: . the former campaign manager did thank the president in his opening remarks. howie: despite his passing, why

shouldn't the president be able to point these things out? ben: i think the president can say anything he wants. to may ganls point, if john was around he would be laughing it off. he had a tough skin. one of theo d one of the differences between john mccain and the president is he struggles if he doesn't get the last word. the way that funeral played out and who spoke to it i think will be a lasting legacy on his behalf. i think when the president does do these things, to your point laura ingraham was making, he step on his own message at a point when he should be vindicated by the outcome of this mueller probe. instead this was spent with him crapping on the legacy of an american hero who should be

respected. howie: john mccain was an absolute war hero. spent five years in a prison camp. but he was not a saint. and he used to laugh about it. there was a lot of coverage of his passing and the funeral and the president was not happy about that. what do you make of lindsey graham who at one time denounced donald trump attacks now making tepid remarks. ben: the senator is someone who has to make decisions based open poll tucks, not just personality. he's a clever man. i think he sees the dynamics in his state. i wish he would be more outspoken. their relationship was almost familial. he declined to take stronger

issue with some of the things he did say. but just in the overall question here from me is more, is this something the president is going to be focused on to the end of his tenure? is this just the way things where going to go for the rest our lives? howie: is it harder for you? this was more recently a member of your family. it's been hard for you to see this unfold. ben: it's hard for me because i know a grieving family and grieving widow and grieving children don't deserve this kind of treatment. i think it come out of a perspective of real resentment on the part of the president. when you seat commander-in-chief, my own family and senator mccain's children serving under him in the armed forces. howie: in commenting on

president trump's record and overseeing the federalist, is it hard for you to separate your personal feelings? ben: i don't think so. i think you should evaluate the president on his policies more than anything else. i wish the president would spend more time on those issues and less time settling personal grievances. whether it's family members or those he had grievances with. but his record is his record. in is beak was self-deprecating about it. he said in retrospect knowing what we know now the iraq war was a big mistake. i think we would see that kind of personal assessment on the part of the president as well. howie: thanks for coming in this sunday and thanks for those

say that? you haven't seen the report yet. we have to be tough on them and tough on ourselves. howie: we do and it's a polarized audience. a fox news poll out today, 80% said mueller, 2% said trump. the republicans, 86% said trump. so you get a lot of flack from both side. >> you had the democrats in the house pivot away from mueller. jerry nadler said i am sending out 81lers for information. nancy pelosi is saying not now. trying to get some cover for impeachment may not play well in

moderate districts. howie: do you see the press covering the hell out of the democratic investigations on the hill as a way of filling the void that will be left by the end of the mueller probe? and if so, is it probable the public will lose interest? >> we have to read the record. it will be interesting to see if polling shows the american public has had enough. the polling suggests the american people want to move forward and the 200 campaign will kick off. but that doesn't mean the democrats will give up. the noisiest voices in the base often drive things. howie: other investigations should be covered. but will it be hour after hour of nonstop coverage?
