of the mueller report. a lawyer for the president is pushing back against efforts by the democrats to get the irs to turn over the president's tax returns. garrett tenney joins us with more. >> reporter: despite goes back to the 2016 campaign and democrats control the house, they argue they need tax returns as part of review on how the irs audits presidents was the chairman of the house ways and means committee sent a letter to the irs seeing 50 years of personal and business tax returns by april 10th. the irs has not commented on that request but the president's personal attorney slanted as political harassment. in a letter to the irs, it would be a gross abuse of power for the majority party to use tax returns as a weapon to attack, harass and intimidate political opponents. the ensuing tit for tat will be lasting damage to our nation.
11:26 am
if the irs complies with democrats requests it would set a dangerous precedent. >> when you look at the issue on tax returns it is a dangerous precedent for committee in congress to single out one individual. when they first started saying they needed donald trump's tax returns it was determining whether there was collusion with the russians, that has been set aside. now they need to make certain he is being taxed according to our tax laws. that's not their job, that is the irs's job. >> reporter: democrats are preparing for a legal fight over the mueller report. the house judiciary committee submitted subpoenas together handle the entire report without rejections. if they are not satisfied with what the attorney general william barr releases later this month. congressman james clyburn suggested bar is taking his time removing parts of the report to protect the president. >> he is undermining the process we all thought would be fair and impartial.

this is supposed to be an administration of transparency and the only thing that's transparent is that donald trump is absolutely horrified of what's apparently in this mueller report trying to keep it secret. eric: then again, there's this at the wall street journal, let me read, quote, mr. barr should release as much as possible, he should side with public disclosure, but no one should think that democrats are worried about a cover-up, they want to see unredacted version as public does so they can allow them to use friendly media outlets to claim there really was collusion or to tarnish trump officials. letting it all out with the 60 grand jury rules, wouldn't that put that to rest? >> again, more information is obviously a good thing, we don't know exactly what's in the report. i think the american people, i agree with much of what was said in editorial. the american people do have right to know certain things there are lines on what is confidential and what's not but, i again, do i think that the left will not be satisfied.
