"fox & friends first" continues right now. gillian: good morning to you. you are watching "fox & friends" first on this monday morning. i'm jillian mele the 'i' the. back with a fox news alert. sri lanka on lockdown after a series of coordinated bombings on easter sunday. >> nearly 300 people now confirmed dead. we have breaking information on who might be responsible. >> this is developing this morning, sri lanka's health minister has just announced that a local militant group carried out these attacks, at least 24 people have now been arrested. but still, no group has taken credit for the attacks that have killed now at least 290 people

and wounded at least a 500 more. it comes after the prime minister suggested police were aware of possible plans to target churches and hotels but that he and his administration, get this, were not ad yetly adey informed. that is raising new questions about what could have been done to stop these attacks. investigators say the initial wave of attacks was carried about by seven suicide bombers. this unfolded on easter sunday as christians in sri lanka were celebrating one of the holiest days of the year. pope francis addressed the tragedy from the vatican. >> i want to express my loving closeness to the christian community targeted while they were gathered in prayer and all the victims of such cruel violence. >> most of the blasts were near the capital city of columbo, a popular tourist destination. the u.s. state department

may 23rd. the man accused of posing as an uber driver and murdering a college student due in court today. nathaniel roland accused of killing samantha josephson in south carolina. prosecutors said he lured her into his car and stabbed her and dumped her in the woods. the search for a missing 5-year-old shifts to his own home. investigators say there's no indication andrew friend was abducted after his parents reported him missing on wednesday. their illinois home is considered a crime scene as his mother begs for answers. >> i just want my kids. that's all i -- that's my life, they're my kids. >> andrew's father said he will continue to look for his son on his own. the illinois department of children and family services has been involved with the family since andrew was born.

shows recent attacks on religious centers. you can obviously see the latest in sri lanka. of course, recently new zealand and also on that list just last year, here in the united states, the pittsburgh synagogue shooting. why are we seeing a lot of these? are these targets extremely soft? >> i think the targets are soft and i think it also has the highest psychological impact as far as what thesis l these isc extreme organizations are going for. in terrorism, what we learned over the years, is whoever is the most scared is the one losing. if they can go after churches, go after synagogues, when they can go after religious groups, christians and catholics, it's, particularly on easter weekend, it has a very, very significant impact and so psychologically they're very successful. it creates a lot of media, obviously. and what we're seeing in sri lanka here is a very soft

target. the eight that were attacked, including the lack of unpreparedness, obviously, with the authorities. it's a big mess over there. all of this needs to be recalibrated. todd: there were reports that 10 days ago security officials were alerted to the threat of a possible attack or series of attacks. is this a situation where they just didn't pay any attention to those? has our complacency risen to a sad level? what's going on here? >> well it sounds to me like the authorities who reported that there was a potential terror alert from a group, a local militant terror organization that hasn't had a lot of p.r. in the recent years since the ending of the civil war and the fighting about a decade ago in sri lanka. sounds like there was a report that came out about 14 days ago,

that never made it to the prime minister of sri lanka. this is precisely what you don't want to do when it comes to counter terror operations. because at the end of the day, actionable intelligence is what's going to help you prevent attacks from happening. that's the first goal. the second goal obviously is to be able to go after terrorists in a coordinated fashion. once you have that information, to be able to arrest them to prevent the attack from happening and use interrogations to be able to extract new intelligence and information from the terror leaders to be able to prevent future attacks. it's a multilayered attack, done through the use of special operations forces. there's another missing piece here, which is that you had a group of terrorists come together for a specific reason to attack specific targets on a very soft targets on a very religious week, easter weekend and you had a lax response from security forces and i think you have ill prepared forces in sri lanka. there wasn't security at the

hotels. there weren't barriers and checks. there were multi players that failed. you want as many layers in between the terrorists and the soft targets so it would take a multi-failure event for terrorists to be successful. you had a failure on the intelligence and response level. there was high risk raid that was conducted where several police officers were killed after the fact going after the potential suspects where bombs went off. so there seems to be a lot of lack of training in this particular region. i think they need to tighten it up. jillian: to that point, aaron, we would like to think if something like this were planned here in the united states, and officials here got word of it, perhaps 10 days in advance, that's what we're hearing happened in sri lanka, we hope that could be prevented here. >> correct. and i think it can be prevented. but again, actionable intelligence, moving quickly on the intelligence, let me add this, every one of these countries in south asia and in

officially enters the race he could potentially lead the field alongside person hey sanders. so does this set the stage for another establishment versus socialist showdown in the democratic party. here to weigh in is former president speech writer ned ryan and jonathan harris. thank you for your time this morning many jonathan, i'll start with you. for argument's sake, let's say these are the only two guys, these are the only two names in the mix right now, obviously they're not but what do you think between biden and bernie? >> i think right now biden looks good. i think we've kind of seen bernie attempt this in 2016 and it kind of petered out as the primaries went on. i think biden looks good. he far out in front with recent polling, that's with the scandal that he recently kind of put behind him. so i think he's got obviously obama in his back pocket, he's got name recognition going for him. i think it looks good. i think it looks good right now. jillian: we had a poll up on the screen. let's take a look at that same

real clear politics poll from may to june of 2016 and that showed hillary clinton actually with 52.8% and bernie with 41.4%. so ned, you just heard jonathan say that biden looks pretty good. bernie's up there in the polls. what do you think? >> i have to agree with jonathan. coming out of the gate, joe biden's name i.d. is pretty strong. i have to think his best day of running for president will be the day he announces. this will be his third presidential run. his first two were mediocre. in 1988 he had to withdraw over plagiarism charges. the next time he got zero votes. right now, the primary voters, i don't see them as being biden voters. in 2016, the super delegates inside the democratic primary

were the last bas bastion for te holding off sanders. i think it paved the way for an outsider and removed one of the establishment's power bases from the primary. i think in many ways joe biden will have more trouble in 2020 than hillary clinton did in 2016. jillian: jonathan, i want to get your opinion on this. a lot of people right now obviously talking about socialism, is this going to be the path that people are going to want to vote. 2020 is going to be a big indicator of where we go in this country. you look at a lot of the candidates who are very socialist, who are left-leaning and then you have the joe bidens of the world who are more moderate than that. >> i think what joe biden did for obama in 2008, biden is going to need someone to do for him in this race. joe biden gave obama the

experience and kind of the washington insider politics that he needed and what biden is going to need now -- biden is locking down the center. biden is locking down what ned ryan was alluding to which is a little bit extra. but hes was staying that the democrats have changed somewhat in recent years, just like the republicans did with the tea party. there was the more extreme arm of the republicans which was the tea party. i think you're seeing the same thing happening now with the democrats. but biden has got that locked down, the center. and what he's going to need is somebody to appeal to those socialist democrats. if he can get someone on board his campaign like that, i think he will be tough to beat. jillian: let's stick with the socialism theme. i want to bring up a number that says 56% of people would be satisfied if a nominee has socialist ideas. that's from likely democratic caucus goers so that's not everybody. but, i mean, we're talking a lot more about socialism now than we have in a while.

>> that's the party base, gillian. these are the people that will likely turn out for a primary vote in 2020. the thing that i'm a little perplexed by is how are people going to pledge feelity to the green new deal, to medicare for all, to universal basic income, free college, to the bds movement which i think they're going to have to do for most part going into the nomination process and whoever wins that nomination in call it august of 2020 will have to pivot in three months and try to claim they're basically center left coming into the general election. i think donald trump will be running on strong job numbers, strong economy, strong foreign policy, all these things. i think the democratic party is in a lot of trouble. the great collusion fairytale is also dead. i think they're in more trouble than people want to admit. i think a lot of this is outside the mainstream of the american. jillian: i know you want to

respond. i'll give you the last word. we had this on a couple minutes ago. seth molten announced. where do you think he falls? >> just in responding to what ned was saying, i mean, if trump does try to run on the economy, i think biden is in a very unique position to say number one, do you really think that a new york millionaire who spent his life as a democrat and changed over in recent years really has your best interest at heart versus joe biden who has been fighting for the middle class all his life. number two, the economy numbers you referenced, biden can easily say those are trends that started under his leadership with president obama. so while trump is sitting on them now, the numbers began under obama and trump called those numbers fake when they were under obama and all of a sudden thought they were real when they were under him. biden has a unique response to that that i don't think any other candidate can make. jillian: we're out of time. i apologize. i want to get your opinion on seth molten at another time.
