[laughter] >> melissa: i can't wait to get started. president trump set to speak of the nation's largest gun rights group, where for third straight year he is the keynote speaker. these are part expected to go after the growing number of democrats seeking to take him on in 2020. including former vice president joe biden. yesterday a former vp taking on the president in his announcement video, and earlierg the white house the president had this to say. >> i think we beat him easily. i feel like a young man. i'm so young! i can't believe it, of the youngest person! i am a young, vibrant man. i look at joe, i don't know about him. i don't know. >> he's too old! >> i would never say anyone is too old, but they are making me look very young. in terms of age and in terms of energy. [laughter] >> melissa: there's a lot of smiling there. a short time ago on abc's "the

view," former vice president biden responded. >> if he looks young and vibrant compared to me, i should probably go home. [laughter] look, everybody knows who donald trump is. the best way to judge me is to watch. see if i have the energy and the capacity. that's the first time i've ever been referenced that way by anyone else. usually it's at the other end. hyper joe. >> melissa: hyper joe, sleepy joe, you decide! there's another reason he has biden in his sights. politico reporting he sees the former vp as his biggest threat and has privately shared concerns with his advisors that biden could beat him. what do you think? i was waiting for another sound bite, obviously there wasn't one. go ahead. i will cue you instead. i'm just so excited. go ahead. [laughter] >> guy: if you look at the

basic math, the case for joe biden would be this -- it still hypothetical, obviously. if you are the democratic nominee i think he would argue he would lock down virtually every single hillary voter, and then could make some in-roads and some of the midwestern states. blue-collar workers that helped put trump over the top in 2016 in the way that hillary clinton could not. >> melissa: what do you think? >> jessica: i agree with guy. if you look at the map, that makes sense. if you look at how things are polling, with trump and biden, biden consistently beats him. as does bernie sanders and a lot of these. we have to be mindful of that. but you are right about getting the coalition. you have to look at two things -- union support and also african-american support. if you look at the endorsements he wrapped up yesterday, which is just the beginning of this, you see a lot of very prominent figures in the african-american community including the head of the cdc, the congressional black caucus. he could win south carolina, which is very big deal. kamala harris is spending a lot of time there trying to make up

ground. >> melissa: i want to remind everyone what's on the screen here. this is indianapolis, and this is the nra annual meeting. we are expecting president trump to come out and address the audience. a lot of pundits have said this is a very important speech right now, because he is addressing a crowd that he needs to hold onto. that some think it made the critical difference in the last election. we want to monitor what he's saying. he's obviously going to react to a lot of the news of the day. we will go to that as soon as he walks out, you will see me looking over to the screen to see if he's coming. don't worry, we are on top of that. we continue this discussion now. one of the things, lisa, that people are saying about joe biden in this matchup -- and how close it could be -- is that he's one of those candidates that has a lot of promise until he gets out there. what seemed like a stumble out of the gate, it feels like, with the change of when he was going to come out and talk. even that answer just now about his energy, you know, he sounded

almost sleepy when he was responding. "if that's what you're going to say about me, i should go home." maybe. >> lisa: go home, then. he's a terrible candidate. this is what i've been saying and what i believe. he's also someone who has been completely untested. two failed presidential bids under his belt. hasn't had a tough senate race since his first one in 1972. i said earlier, with the report that he will be largely relying on mega-donors as opposed to those small-deli donors, that demonstrates the fact that he doesn't have those dominic especially when there's going to be that many candidates in the race. i do for q end up being the nominee. i think it is someone wanted bernie sanders. that excitement, that has that grassroots support. i think he will end up being a dud just like jeb bush was. >> melissa: its interest, those candidates that make so much sense on paper. you are like, "he can take back

the centrist republicans that went to trump." he has the obama machine behind him, may be. that's debatable but at least you have the memory of that for those democrat voters. but then when everybody hits the field, it's about the passion. and people connect with people, or they don't. never would have predicted the bernie phenom. i wouldn't have predicted the trump phenom. they get out there and people have momentum. how do you think -- does not speak about biden, or who else in the field do you see on the democratic side that has that kind of passion bynum? >> kennedy: it's interesting, because i know bernie sanders and his people were very insulted when mayor pete compared donald trump and bernie sanders. but what they did tap into was not only sort of the populist offset in many parts of the country that felt like they have been left out of identity politics. establishment ways. they also have a deep political

intuition. they go so much on feeling, and both men are also tethered to a very specific ideology. joe biden doesn't necessarily have that. he does define himself as an obama-biden democrat, and that means something for democrats who long to take back the white house. but the obama-biden economy wasn't as good as the trump economy is. i think that is the biggest thing he has -- >> melissa: you bring up biden-obama. he was asked again -- this is one of the clumsy things out of the gate. he said, "well, i asked president obama not to endorse me." >> kennedy: sure, i don't want that advantage! [laughter] >> melissa: he was asked about it again on "view" a short time ago. here's how he answered it the second time. >> i didn't want it to look like he's putting his thumb on the scale. that i'm going to do this based on who i am, not by the president going out and trying to say, "this is the guy you

should be with." >> lisa: raise your hand if you believe it. i don't take a certain person on the couch believes that he didn't want the endorsement. i think you have to think about it this way -- what you have to do is there voters out in a crowded primary field. you need enough enthusiasm that your vote will be split enough dogma with democrats on the stage. i think bernie sanders is the person who has that kind of grassroots excitement, that has that enthusiasm with his base that is going to turn people out. i think biden's vote share could easily go to other people. >> melissa: jessica, let me ask you -- do you think he also turned down oprah for the endorsement question work and santa claus? [laughter] >> lisa: and the easter bunny. >> jessica: there's a lot more to the story. the obama's have been clear for months if they want to endorse early in the primary or in the primary at all. >> guy: don't pretend they don't want it. >> jessica: it did backfire last time. that's the most important narrative. they are acutely aware, after the 2016 race -- because of what the bernie sanders camp was

talking about and a lot of centrist democrats as well -- that it was rigged in favor of hillary clinton with the way the superdelegates worked and the backing of the dnc. no democrat wants to be seen as having things rigged right out of the gate. to the enthusiasm question there, bernie sanders -- of course he has enthusiastic supporters. am i the only one who saw him at the "she the people" some of this week? they asked him a simple question but what he was going to do to help people of color and handed up talking about marching with mlk and got booed. from an african make an audience. >> kennedy: that's a really good point. i think that speaks to a lot of these politicians -- i don't know what they are relying on. but it's not the truth. when you go to a group of people who have put themselves in this collective in order to have a unified voice, you better speak to them honestly and not pander to them. and not use these moldy lines. he may have had great intentions in the '60s, and that may have been a beautiful moment for him,

but that's not enough right now. >> lisa: it's been a wild. >> kennedy: joe biden at this conference would have done even worse. they booed beto o'rourke as wel well. >> jessica: people have already tweeted about the 1994 crime bill paid a lot of black democrats voted for that crime bill. bill clinton was known as the first black president before we actually had a black president. >> kennedy: we are in a very different place than we were. >> jessica: than if you are right -- coat >> kennedy: people are going to look at this field than his record and they will compare him next to other - i mean, kamala harris has the same issues on criminal justice. but the facts of his legislative record will absolutely hurt him. >> melissa: i want to get guy back in. >> guy: on the endorsement piece, thickets preposterous to suggest that he doesn't desperately want the endorsement of rock and michelle obama paid obviously. to pretend that he asked not to be endorsed -- >> jessica: i'm trying to

contextualize this amongst democrats. >> guy: that's a spin that i don't think washes. we probably agree on that. >> jessica: i wasn't trying to spin it -- >> guy: i'm saying biden is spinning it, you are not spending it. here's the thing about -- >> melissa: jessica always feel safe when i'm here! [laughter] >> guy: before he declared joe biden a dud, let's see how he performs as a candidate. i will say some of the early signs would make me nervous if i was a biden supported. for example, some of the behind-the-scenes turmoil that -- we learned today that he made, of course, charlottesville huge centerpiece of his launch video. he referenced the young woman tragically killed. her mother came out publicly and said that the biden camp didn't even get in touch with her before they invoked her memory in this political context. to me that is malpractice. that's a very big misstep on day one from team and by then. it's a marathon. i think we've got a long way to go. he has a lot of support, lots of other endorsements. but that was not a good sign, i

would say. >> melissa: good discussion. everyone is safe. it's all good pay [laughter] we are waiting, as we mentioned, for the present to come out at the nra annual meeting. we expect them to say a lot of things about the news of the day. we will keep an eye on that and bring it to you just as soon as it happens. in the meantime, brand-new numbers out today showing economic growth exceeding expectations. it is glorious. many analysts predicted a slow down, but not so much. whether the continued growth will be a big boost for president trump in 2020. plus, new scrutiny over text messages between former fbi officials peter strzok and lisa page. why top republican senators are calling it more evidence of a irregular conduct during the early stages of the russia probe. we will debate it all next. >> so you see now they are trying to infiltrate the white house. this is long after the election. it's a disgrace.

>> melissa: okay, right now we are going to take you to indianapolis, where you can see president trump right there taking to the stage. this is the annual meeting of the national rifle association, and the president here expected to most likely touch on a lot of topics and a lot of news of what is going on. some interesting articles this morning talking about how this is the key demographic yes to hang onto it in the next election. so his speech may be geared in that direction. guy, what are you looking for? >> guy: this is the president's favorite situation to begin. this is his favorite type of venue. big crowd, adoring fans. we saw him last night on "hannity" playing president pundit, which he likes doing. it's highly entertaining and a lot of ways. we'll probably see jabs and jokes and one-liners in the car

deleted it. he might go on for quite some time. >> kennedy: what's interesting is he was expanding upon some of the candidates in the race now. it reminds me of 2016 when hilary and his team were praying for donald trump to be the republican nominee because they thought he was so beatable. >> guy: oops. big mistake. [laughter] >> jessica: it'll be interesting to see how much he talks about second amendment rights in that issue. we know that the house passed a background checks bill as a big win for democrats in february, that they did that. i'm interested to see if he touches on that at all or if he uses this really is a campaign speech because he wants to talk about joe biden and bernie sanders and those issues at play. >> melissa: he does both. >> lisa: it looks like hate -- i would say the authenticity aspect since you mentioned hillary clinton, that was her achilles' heel in 2016. a word of caution. for the democratic contender. authenticity will be an asset. >> melissa: that's a great

[cheers and applause] who would have thought in our country? but it's called what we altogether have done -- it started two and a half years ag ago.

on that great november 8th. that was a great day. remember that day? [cheers and applause] a great day. and in a year and a half, we have one called november 3rd. november 3rd this time. get ready to vote -- you'd better. you better get ready to vote. but it's all called "draining the swamp," and we are doing it faster than anyone ever thought possible. i'm very proud of it. [cheers and applause] and around the world, america is respected again. because we are finally putting america first. it's been a long time. [cheers and applause] our economy is now the hottest anywhere on the planet earth. just this morning we learned that the gdp smashed

expectations with the economy growing at an annual rate of 3.2% in the first quarter. the first quarter, for whatever reason. 3.2. [applause] if we kept the same interest rates and the same quantitative easing that the previous administration had, that 3.2 would have been much higher than that. but they hadn't hit these numbers in 16 years. we had a tremendous increase in inventory investment. you know what that means? and listen to this -- a very great increase in net exports. isn't that about time? isn't that nice? [applause]

we've added almost 6 million jobs since my election. if i would have said that during the campaign, all of those people back there -- we called them the fake news -- they wouldn't have believed it. they are fake. [boos] they are fake. blue-collar jobs recently grew at the fastest rate in more than three decades. nearly 5 million americans have been lifted off of food stamps since our election. [cheers and applause] wages are rising fast. and the lowest-paid workers are making the biggest percentage gains of all, and that's nice to hear. it's about time. [cheers and applause] unemployment recently achieved its lowest rate in 51 years, and

very shortly it should be its lowest rate in the history of our country. [cheers and applause] african american, asian american, hispanic-american, i have reached the lowest levels of unemployment in our history. [cheers and applause] america's future has never been brighter, and yet democrats have never been angrier. especially now that their collusion delusion has been exposed to the world as a complete and total fraud. [cheers and applause] it's been the greatest political

hoax ever in our country. instead of working with us to rebuild our infrastructure, lower drug prices -- which, by the way, this year for the first time in 50 years, drug prices went down. [applause] they are going to go down a lot lower. and instead of working with us to fix our trade deals -- which i am doing without them -- and continue creating millions and millions of new jobs, which we are doing at a level that people have not seen before. that people don't even believe. democrats are obsessed with hoaxes, delusions, and witch hunts. that's what they are obsessed with. that's what they want to do. we can play the game just as well or better than they do.

[applause] far-left radicals in congress want to take away your voice, your jobs, your rights, and they especially want to take away your guns. you know that. they want to take away your guns. you better get out there and vote. you better get out there and vote. it seems like it's a long ways away -- it's not. i was saying two millennia, our great first lady -- whose birthday it is today. happy birthday, melania. [cheers and applause] i remember standing, two and a half years ago, in the same hallway where abraham lincoln and so many others have stood. my first night in the

white house. and i said to melania, "this is incredible." and four years seem so long away. and now here we are. we are getting ready to start up the campaign again. start up the campaign again. [applause] i never want to do anything with maga. make america great again has been great, but we've made it great. we brought it back. we are thinking about a slogan. "keep america great." because you have socialists and far-left democrats that want to destroy everything that we've done. your 401(k)s are going through the roof, your stock markets sinks the election since the election has hit a record high. almost a hundred different records, i've broken. record high. but everyone is like a genius

now. they buy stock and they are all up. everyone is benefiting and jobs are benefiting. it could all be taken away when you put the wrong people in office. we cut regulations more than any president in the history of our country. and that's in two years. in two years we did more to regulation. think of that. than any president in the history of our country. that's one of the reasons our jobs are booming, one of the reason the economy is booming. we give you the largest tax cut in the history of our country. the biggest ever. and we got an warrant approved, and we got the individual mandate. the absolute worst part of obamacare, eliminated. now we are going for the rest. and we had it done except for one vote. you know what i'm talking about.

in recent days, leading democrats have proposed banning new guns and confiscating existing guns from law-abiding citizens. what they don't tell you is that the bad guys aren't giving up their guns. and you are not going to be giving up your guns, either. [cheers and applause] at the same time, house democrats recently voted against notifying ice. these brave, great, talented, brilliant patriots. when an illegal alien attempts to buy a gun, which is a felony. democrats also support sanctuary cities that released thousands of dangerous criminal aliens onto our streets. in fact, they like the criminal

aliens and aliens so much that when we are forced to release them into our country, because of the horrible immigration laws that the democrats refuse to give us the votes -- we need some of the votes to change. we give them as many as they can handle. [cheers and applause] and they are not too happy about it, folks. they are not too happy. they said, "who came up with that idea?" they said, "only trump could come up with that idea." we give them as many as they can handle. in other words, democrats want to disarm law-abiding americans while allowing criminal aliens to operate with impunity. but that will never happen as long as i'm your president. not even close. [cheers and applause]

i promise to defend the second amendment rights of every american, and i always will. i'll never let you down. [applause] never let you down. i haven't so far, and i won't. because, as the famous saying goes, "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." very simple. [applause] the democrats are also working hard to block the wall, but we are building the wall. they are not happy about it. and we will have over 400 miles of wall built by the end of next year. [cheers and applause]

building a lot of wall. i want to think border patrol, our great military. i want to thank the army corps of engineers. they've been incredible. and we are doing something that i could do very quickly, and we are doing it very quickly. but dealing with these people is very, very difficult, if you haven't noticed. okay? any politician would have given up a long time ago. so we will have over 400 miles of wall built by the end of next year. it's going up rapidly. rapidly. [cheers and applause] we are also renovating tremendous stretches of wall. we have wall that is in bad shape. but it's structurally sound. rather than building new, we renovated. we make it as good as new. saving a lot of money, and regained a lot of territory. so we have a lot of great things going. a lot of great things going. [applause]

most importantly, democrats must change our immigration laws right now. right now. we can do it -- i used to say 4n 15 minutes. very simple. you know the programs. they are horrible. the asylum. where rough, tough, ms-13 gang members come in. you don't want to meet with these people, but ice doesn't mind. because ice is throwing them out of our country by the thousands. and the democrats want to eliminate ice. can you believe that? boy, oh, boy,... but it's incredible what they've done. it's incredible what we've done. but they stand there in asylum, and they read a statement. "i am afraid for my life. i am afraid to go back to my country. i want to be an american!" and you look and you see a toughness that you don't see. and you just see what happens

with the mayor of tijuana and others. they say, "these people, we try and help them and they start hitting us. they start punching us. we don't want them in our country, and they are not getting into our country. when they have in the past, a lot of them have. we are throwing them the hell out. >> melissa: this is president trump speaking in indianapolis to the national rifle association's annual meeting, hitting on a lot of the topics of the day. he did a long riff on the economy, which is kind of funny because he was talking about sports. gdp, quantitative easing, how will the economy is going. he moved onto the political contenders for 2020, and he was talking about both what happened with the mueller investigation, the outcome of that, and what he

called dirty tricks preeti said, "we can play this game just as good as anyone." he also said the democrats want to take away guns from law-abiding people. but yet they will allow immigrants to come into the country -- >> jessica: with impunity. that's exactly what he said. [laughter] >> melissa: what jumped out at you? >> guy: i hit trump bango within the first 5 minutes in this speech i think it was smart. we were kind of laughing a little bit on the couch because of his discussions of some of these specific statistics on the economy. >> melissa: which were dead on. he was right about that. >> guy: i'm thrilled. this is something they should be talking about every chance they get. of course he will talk about no collusion, of course he will talk about immigration. to this crowd, on the second amendment. but the gdp number today is a huge beat. it's a really good number for the u.s. economy. for them to focus and then drill down into why the number is so good, i think that --

>> melissa: no one cheered, that's what's funny. they cheered all the stuff that president trump normally does that gets the crowd going, but when he talks about what is arguably the biggest achievement and the timeliness thing, when you say net exports -- we cheered because we are economic people. >> jessica: don't x to three there are two different things going on as you have the economy in the readme issues like immigration. the attempted coup, this witch hunt that he describes. you have to get the base excited and get them to turn out, which is what this speech is. but what ultimately will win the election if he wins again in 2020 is the economy. that's the motivating factor, for people to support him and not wanting to the ballot box. if the economy is not good, whoever the democrat nominee, a better argument for them to make for that there needs to be a good direction of the country. >> kennedy: that is the best

case against socialism. socialism and that patch really only works in an economic downturn. jessica? >> jessica: i largely agree with what you all said pay [laughter] he also mentioned health care, that he remove the worst part of obamacare with the individual mandate. and then he's coming for the rest. there were survivors saying, but please don't keep going, stay away from health care!" because that was the defining issue in 2018 for democrats and they will run again. we will talk about the economy similar, but the messaging democrats have stew around the economy is a tightrope act. you have to be careful post-taxis and how you phrase these things. >> melissa: everybody wins on health care because they're coming in. and they say, "i'm broken, i'm going to fix it!" then they don't fix it in the next group wins. that would be wonderful to see. just one day into the race and past controversies are already haunting joe biden. why anita hill says his apology was not nearly enough for the way she was treated in the 1991

she "endured" when she testified before his committee, alleging sexual harassment by thomas. he'll says they botched the question, which discouraged other women from coming forward. why wasn't joe biden more prepared for that question? >> guy: that's a very good question. taking a step back briefly, anita hill, every other woman who testified backed up clearance clearance times of the time. they supported him and believed in. the fbi agents who work involves said that she lied to them. i think that's important for the record. when it comes to relitigating all of this, decades later, whether you think he should be apologizing to her or to him or to whoever else, you have to be ready for this question. it's obviously coming. you're going on speech "the view," you know -- do not have an answer lockdown is another red flag we are seeing very early in this campaign prayed that some floundering there. >> kennedy: why didn't he call her 15 years ago? why did he call just a few weeks

ago? that's no different than michael cohen reaching out to karen mcdougall. i'm sorry, this is for political convenience. i don't blame her for being offended. i would be deeply offended if i were being used as a political pawn in order to give him some coverage and comfort room right before he announces that he's running for president. it's offensive. >> lisa: how big of a problem is this for biden? >> jessica: we talked about this issue on the couch a few weeks ago, when lucy flores first came out. remember, i said, "i think anita hill will be bigger than any claims of hair sniffing." they think of him as a predator. i believe that his response would certainly not be satisfying for a number of us or for anita hill. i think it will continue to come up. i don't think it sinks him in any way. >> melissa: disingenuous. that's what hurts candidates these days. >> lisa: boom. we will end on that. the trip economy is booming. i didn't plan that pay [laughter] new numbers out today, the gross

that the gdp smashed expectations with the economy growing at an annual rate of 3.2% in the first quarter. >> kennedy: he had to read that report with oven mitts, it's so hot -- ! touting the economy and indie apples today -- great city. new gdp numbers just out of the economy grew at a solid 3.2% annual rate, in the first three months this year. easily topping forecasts of 2.5%. is this enough for the president right now? >> guy: right now, yes. it's sustainable, that's still an open question. it's obviously very good news. i saw a republican operative treating just a few moments ago but now since the touch of her must implement it we've had five consecutive quarters averaging more than 3% gdp growth. that's not a coincidence. >> kennedy: estimates were much lower. what does this say customer >> jessica: it says that

estimates were a lot lower and we over perform to them. and that's great, because i love america. back to being a democrat, though pay [laughter] >> kennedy: how do democrats capitalize on this? >> jessica: they capitalize on it by talking about building on the growth we've seen. that would've been a smart argument to be making if you were running in 2016, as well. "we've seen these gains under the obama economy, this is how i will improve them." i think there will be a lot of pivoting to health care, talking about the fact that the richest did a lot better in the tax cut than the middle and lower classes. as gary said in the last segment, the president should state in the county. >> guy: there were tax cuts outs though my the board, not just for the rich. >> kennedy: let's bring lisa, we are running out of t-i-m-e. >> lisa: is the economy is wrong to take some of the talking point and the emphasis of socialism. that hurts democrats. i go back to the politico piece talking about how trump would win in a landslide according to economic model is that the economy stays the way it is now.

speech of the question is, does the president have what it takes, and how much influence as the federal government have on economic growth? >> jessica: it was pointed out this morning that we've seen economic growth but the approval rating doesn't get a bump out of it. he stays steady. he did about three points right after the mueller report. i wonder why that is, if people are feeling it. >> kennedy: people may not like him, but they like money. we are living in a weird time, which is fantastic. we've got more "outnumbered" in just a moment. stay right here. hello.
