the upside- i'm just getting started. boost® high protein. be up for life™. look for savings on boost® in your sunday paper. see welcome to a special breaking news edition of fox report i'm on john's got live from the "fox news" headquarters in new york. following a developing story right now outside of san diego california. one woman is dead and three people hospitalized after shooting at a synagogue in the town of pow way. police are calling it a hate crime and they say they have a 19-year-old suspect in custody or there are no other suspects and no further danger to the community at this time. let's go live to marion rafferty who has been following the story through the afternoon and joins us with the latest. >> officials confirming a short while ago the one woman has died following a shooting at a synagogue and the suspect is in

custody. the mayor calling the antenna hate crime in saying the community will come through this tragedy united. >> i wanted to know this is not poway. the poway i know comes together as we did a few weeks ago at an interfaith event. we always walk with our arms around each other and we will walk through this tragedy with our arms around each other. >> we also know for patients were transported to the palomar medical center for shooting. one of them has passed away into adult males in the little girl are currently in stable condition. so far it's unclear how many people were inside the synagogue at the time the shooting but the san diego sheriff's department says at least 100 witnesses are still waiting to be interviewed. we are now hearing from some of those witnesses as the accounts of what happened inside unfolded >> we were outside in front of our house and heard about six

gunshots, some yelling and another six or seven gunshots. see neck officials say the 19-year-old white l. suspect was engaged by an off-duty border patrol agent who happened to be inside the synagogue at the time the shooting. the suspect was able to get away with a short time later authorities say he surrendered to a k-9 officer without incident. the officer spotted in a our type in the vehicle. the shooting happened shortly before 11:30 this morning as worshipers were beginning and all the passover service scheduled to end tonight with the passover meal. >> maryanne rafferty in california. thank you. we are awaiting another briefing from police about the shooting. expected later on in this hour. meantime some of the earlier briefings that took place over an hour ago about the victims and the suspect. >> about 11:23 this morning a white male adult entered the

shabbat template 1634 shabbat way in poway california. this individual had in ar type assault weapon and opened fire on the people inside the synagogue. during the shooting for individuals were wounded and transported to palomar hospital. sadly one of the individuals succumbed to their ones. the other three are in stable condition at palomar. as the suspect was fleeing the temple and off-duty border patrol agent opened fire on the suspect but apparently it did not hit him but struck a car in the area. the people at palomar a female juvenile in stable condition and two adult males are in stable condition.

sadly an older female has died and succumbed to her wounds. the suspect was surely taken into custody and i will turn it over to the chief from the san diego department to give you the details of that arrest. >> good afternoon. as this incident was unfolding a san diego police officer k9 officer was en route to the scene and he was monitoring the police departments dispatch and the sheriff's dispatcher and heard the call and started making his way toward his call. as he was en route he also overheard chp scanner of the suspect who was called and the chp to report that he was involved in the shooting at his location which was rancho bernardo on interstate 15. the officer was exiting the freeway he clearly saw the suspect in his vehicle. the suspect pulled over and jumped out of his car with his

hands up and was immediately taken into custody by the police department as the officer was placing this 19-year-old male into custody he clearly saw a rifle sitting on the front passenger seat of the suspect vehicle in the suspect as i said was taken into custody without further incident. >> the's investigation will be led by the sheriff's department that will be an joint investigation of san diego police department. the. >> thank you, sheriff. first and foremost would like to offer our deepest condolences to the victims of this tragedy. as soon as we were made aware of the incident the fbi deployed resources immediately to the scene. we have deployed all relevant access to assist with this investigation.

we are working closely with our local state and united states attorney's office on the investigation. with that i will turn it over to over. the san diego sheriff's department provides law enforcement services to the city of poway and we are joined this afternoon by the mayor of poway steve foss. >> i want you to know this is not poway. the poway i know comes together as we did just a few weeks ago in an interfaith event. we always walk with our arms around each other and we will walk through this tragedy with our arms around each other. we have deep appreciation for those who show courage at the shabazz in the law enforcement agencies that responded so quickly. we will get through this. our thoughts and prayers will be

with the families and those who are investigating. poway will stay strong and we will always be a community that cares for one another. >> joining us now on the phone is the man you just saw the mayor of poway in san diego where the shooting took place today. we heard from them earlier in maryanne rafferty's report. he joins us live by phone. thanks for taking the time. we know it's an emotional day for you and everybody there in poway. do we know anything more about the suspect? we are expecting a police briefing in the next hour in this hour i should say but have your officers given you any information? >> i don't really want to talk about the suspect. all i know is we are dealing with someone with overflowing hate in his heart created i want to talk with the people of poway

when they have a wildfire come to her town we work together with pickup trucks and garden hoses. when we have this kind of tragedy visit we stand shoulder-to-shoulder. we are deeply appreciative of law enforcement and i will be visiting with the rabbi a little bit later on today. i know him well and i just wanted to express our community's love for he and his congregation and the fact that we will be with him every step of the way. >> he apparently lost a couple of fingers in this attack and he was trying to talk the gunman of doing whatever it was that he did. >> folks inside a pot of poway showed courage and i am so thankful that law enforcement was able to apprehend the suspects of quickly and i'm anxious for him to feel the full force of the law. >> it appears law enforcement did a spectacular job in responding to this depraved act iii have border patrol agents barely off-duty inside the

synagogue at the time. is that your understanding? >> i don't know the depth of the details that law enforcement or fire department acted with speed and professionalism and this could have been much worse. >> we heard you say that you had met with the rabbi of this particular congregation a couple of weeks ago and discuss safety. with that because of any kind of a threat or was it just an attempt to be prudent and address some of the issues we face in what seemed to be dangerous times? >> these threats are all too common in the day that we live in now and the habat of poway is being proactive in our city was being proactive. i suspect the time we had with the rabbi and his congregation and his habat family probably helped in their response to this tragedy and we are going to continue to lean into taking

care of our community. >> how does this change life in poway? >> this doesn't change life in poway. we are a community that comes together. we have such a. >> of volunteerism in poway. i can tell you and your viewers if you want to move to southern california poway is the place you should want to be. the safest in the state. we take care of each other and life is going to go on though we will have a hole in our hearts as a result of this hateful at. >> you have said well the police have identified the suspect as coming from the general vicinity a few miles away from poway. we know he's 19 years old described as white. to your knowledge is this somebody who has had run-ins with the law in your area

before? >> i have no idea. as i said before i'm anxious for him to feel the full force of the law and they know he will. >> the folks who are still hospitalized we understand from the news conference that they are expected to recover. is that your understanding? >> yes they expect full recovery although their hearts will always be one that i have no doubt. >> a chaotic and horribly frightening event and again we are going to be hearing stories of heroism not only from the rabbi but also from others. >> and want to mention that i'm deeply appreciative to the president. he called a bit ago from air force one to put the nation's resources at art disposal. i was deeply appreciative of his expression of support and we said we would keep in touch. >> what do you say to the nation right now? you are speaking on live national tv.

what do you say to your fellow americans? do you need anything and how can we help? >> prayer for the families that have been devastated by this. this faith community will be together and we will continue together and i am proud of the city. i am proud of our law enforcement, proud of the chabad family that showed such courage and make no mistake we are going to continue to be there for one another and we would appreciate prayers for those so impacted by this. it's a tragedy but poway will be strong. >> it's a positive attitude is such a horrific event of data survey what is needed. mayor vaus of poway california yankee for you time.

joel irwin joined us briefly in our last hour but we want to go with him. he's back now. joel and his family are members of tree of life were shooting took place six months ago today. joel i wanted to chat with you on something. you said that you felt some of the anti-semitic rhetoric has ramped up since the trump administration arrived in the administration but as you well know this is a president whose daughter is converted to judaism and his son-in-law's obviously jewish. it doesn't start with president trump, does that? >> no, doesn't it doesn't john and i'm glad you point that out. what i am saying is the rhetoric for example in charlottesville. the presence response that equivocated and it did not collect out for what it was. he said these were very fine people in that encouragement and

other language about immigrants and language about people who are different, people of color in many instances, that is the problem. as we have seen in sri lanka with christians being mass murdered and muslims in new zealand a month ago we have a local an omen i write now of mass attacks against religious institutions and people who are practicing their faith. all of our leaders need to be very clear and not equivocate and not give a sense of comfort to those who are anti-semitic in this case and get them in their box. >> you heard the interview with the mayor just a bit ago. he says this community will bind up and come through this stronger. have you found that to be the case in pittsburgh? as we mentioned you and your family are members of the tree of life synagogue were the terrible shooting took place six

months ago. >> i grew up in pittsburgh. my family is there. my parents talk all the time about it and there's a lot of support in the community. it's an ongoing discussion in an ongoing battle for comfort and all of the jewish committee -- community across the country is consistently concerned. my daughters go to hebrew school we see police cars in front of the synagogue often just guarding it. that's not the situation in america that we want to be living in. we are not out of the woods yet. the mayor is very powerful and is showing strong leadership is going to take that kind of leadership top to bottom state federal and local government religious leaders and lay people to really be willing to go the extra mile to try to heal these murders that are still very raw. >> so many americans flock to

their synagogues and flock to their churches as a sanctuary. they go there for peace and healing and after something happens as this happened in pittsburgh and has happened at chabad at this particular synagogue and the name has escaped me for just a moment and how do we get back to that sense of normalcy? >> there something particularly vile about what to place today. as you mentioned it's the last day of passover which is the celebration and chabad is a more religious segment of the jewish community then most but they also bring in the whole community so it was a real celebration and the same thing in pittsburgh. the synagogue had just a week prior held a community event supporting immigrants of these are targeted attacks. it's just not a normal day but a very special day and i think

frankly this tough guy who ran, not so tough. we need to really demonstrate as the mayor did and as the rabbi clearly did in their discussions that we are going to stand our ground and we are not going to be out by hate speech and hateful acts but it's going to require consistent persistent community and leadership effort in the efforts of all of us who care deeply about this country. care deeply about this country. jon: it is a frightening time but we know at the tree of life with these horrific events thank you very much. one woman dead, three injured including a little girl. the suspect in custody after a targeted shooting at a synagogue outside of san diego

washington d.c. press corps is gathering simultaneously for the white house correspondents dinner taking place without the president in attendance. was alive look at green bay while the crowds already listening to speakers awaiting the president. but right now the eyes of the nation are on the town of poway one woman killed three injured two men and a child with a targeted attack by a 19 -year-old suspect who is now in police custody. we are joined now with the aftermath. we are told that the suspect actually called 911 to identify himself to authorities i'm guessing this

is the aftermath? what does that tell you about this guy quick. >> to do a psychological footprint to determine what is the motives. if he did call to make a 911 call after the incident, it tells me from a psychological perspective that someone who wanted attention and wanted to be the big man on campus. so he went into the synagogue hoping to kill as many people as he possibly could to get attention. why do we know that? when he left the synagogue off-duty border patrol officer shot at him. also the k-9 officer came in contact. he got out of his car raised his hands and gave himself

up. so this is someone who wants attention and is a loner. jon: his mental illness a possibility? we will hear that defense. >> as a lawyer i can unequivocally tell you probably will hear that defense. but the defense for insanity is what you knew or should have known at the time that you slaughter people like he did. apparently he wanted to do that. but what will happen they - - they are now going to his house and going through his computers and social media. and talking to people who knew him and relatives. they are trying to put together a profile of who and what this guy was in with that

insanity defense may not work. jon: we're told he was wearing a bullet proof vest as well as a ballistic armored helmet. it sounds like a guy who didn't want to die but he also gave up. why? . >> you just said he did not want to die. he had tactical gear and he gave up because i believe he did what he wanted to do he went in to kill and to get out and now he believes people all over the country everybody is looking at what happened in california and this is what he wanted. the sad part is, remember the tree of life in pittsburgh was

six months to the day. so what i am always concerned about our copycats. this very well could have been a copycat wanting attention. jon: authorities in san diego have dispatched deputies to houses of worship as a precaution but again tree of life took place six months ago this is on the other side of the country so it's hard to protect every church or mosque or synagogue across america. >> they are not able to do it. it is unfortunate as many guards as you want in a house of worship or a school. there is no 100 percent guarantee you can take out somebody held that to go in and kill people. it just will not happen unfortunately.

jon: so what happens now? we know he is in police custody they did not save he has requested a lawyer but we understand he was interrogated. >> they are probably interrogating him and then they will mirandized him telling him he has the right to remain silent anything he says can be used against him. jon: but that has to come first almost from the top? . >> in some instances. but when he evaporates into being a suspect would you become a suspect quite naturally they have to but he could continue to talk if he wishes. law enforcement officers if you have somebody is told not to but this is somebody who wants law enforcement officers

to know what he did and when he did it so i believe they could be very talkative and to take into consideration everything he say says. jon: in the process digging himself a deep hole if he hopes to somehow escape the legal system or prosecution. >> he is looking for attention. these are the kind of people who don't give a damn about what happens to them in the criminal justice system as long as i get the attention they are seeking. without being redundant sometimes looking at somebody with psychological problems but also could be incentivized. jon: formally with the dc homicide unit thank you as always for your expertise. the suspect as a white male 19 years old living 5 miles away

and walked in this morning around 1130 pacific cursing and screaming and opening fire. four people hit, one woman dead two men wounded and a little girl those three are expected to survive. the quick action of a border patrol agent who was off duty apparently inside who confronted the gunmen to help keeping the slaughter from being far worse than it was. also an off-duty highway patrol officer i'm sorry maybe san diego police officer apprehended the suspect to threw up his arms into the air and surrendered after his car was stopped on the freeway. we are awaiting another police conference with more updates on this tragic synagogue shooting in california. back in ' moment.

continuing coverage on that story. a 19 -year-old man walks into the synagogue in southern california and murders in cold blood a woman as well as injuring others before a off-duty order patrol agent chases him down he got into the car a freeway chase took place and other officers could operate on - - apprehend him he came out with his hands up the motive according to the police is hate former fbi special agent has been watching this unfold today and joins us live. we are told the suspect actually dialed 911 and gave his name to police prick i have never heard of that happening before. >> knows somebody really wants to take credit for this horrific actor wants people to know he is a big tough guy and

what the law enforcement officer engaged him. jon: we know california has some of the strictest gun laws in the country but it didn't prevent this particular shooting. of course, they were price for gun control that is that the answer? . >> and control in my opinion clearly is not the answer. talk about gun laws and regulations in the state of california look at the state of chicago one - - in the city of chicago more scenarios here than anywhere else we don't even have to get into chicago. it is important as we talk about a multi- pronged approach. we have to be more resilient to make ourselves safer do everything we talked about in

the last segment but also be careful not to glorify these shooters. these predators especially someone like this who calls 911 who once all the attention , i would love to see every network shut it down and not even mention his name. as a pie in the sky dream but focus on the rabbi or the people that were there or the people traumatized the heroes or law enforcement officers that did a fantastic job i would much rather focus on that program really feel that takes a lot of wind out of their sales. jon: a point well taken and what we try not to do to make mention of the names of the sick individuals who pull off something like this. we do not know his name at this point but i imagine we may get that at the news conference expected within the hour. but again we will not make

much of it because he can rot in prison as far as i am concerned. so now talking about preparation after sri lanka or sutherland springs or this or the tree of life there will be many churches and synagogues who want to know how to protect themselves. you say those resources are available? . >> they are and to go out a little bit more even those attacks that are happening throughout the world that is where a security assessment comes in handy. for example, the cardinal at saint patrick talked about how the fire department came to do a security threat assessment to identify vulnerabilities so they put in sprinkler systems these are things that our

important look at egress routes, locking the doors at the beginning of every service breaker at the church i go to nobody is allowed in with backpacks which is hard in california so many people are homeless liking - - they want to bring their stuff in. we don't know what's in those bags. i have been involved in many security threat assessments from people able to access a power panel on your building two gates being left open, parking structures, the heat map so which crimes are in that area. are people testing the market? are they doing a predicate offense leading up to this? there also businesses that scrub social media and we

monitor that. it's not cheap it is a new line if work but you look at these life and follow them and take them very seriously many times reporting these to the fbi the fusion centers are a great asset to enforcement when you give this information to law enforcement, people say i don't know if it is important. come up with the entire plan and foliage we don't asked that just give us information it is our job, is law enforcement's job to put the pieces together to determine what that threat is and how to address that. jon: maureen who spent 45 years - - 25 years with the fbi in california thank you very much. >> joining us now is the rabbi who is also author of the book

first the jews. watching all of this unfold with the rest of the country over the past several hours what are your thoughts? . >> it is just terrifying. one of the things as the rabbi that on this day many of the people in the synagogue were celebrating the last day of passover but also there is a prayer of mourning from the easter service remembering people dying in years past so imagine these members who were there thinking about their loved ones who died then the shooter comes in the door is horrifying. jon: there are two rabbi goldstein's at this t15 so i don't know which one is the particular hero but the police say the rabbi lost two fingers

apparently in confronting the gunmen to persuade him to put down the weapon you have to admire that kind of courage and that is in keeping with the passover theme. >> absolutely. what a courageous hero. to be in his sacred house of worship to be mindful and have the courage to do that. part of the sadness passover is a holiday all about freedom the most celebrated holiday among american jews. because of the message from freedom of oppression it reflects the greatest american ideals. i look around at the jewish population today and it feels so incredibly vulnerable that this act that is six months to the day after pittsburgh. we have worked hard at my
