with the iconic "boys in the hood" movie, earning him oscar nominations for writing and directing. he will be sadly missed. "the five" is next. >> jesse: hello, everybody. i'm jesse watters along with dana perino and greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city, and this is "the five" ." dramatic new detail showing how heroic acts prevented the horrific synagogue shooting in california from becoming much worse. a 60-year-old lori k was killed after stopping in front of her rabbi when he started opening fire. the rabbi, who was 1 of 3 people injured, describing what happened in chilling detail. >> here is a young man, standing with a rifle. pointing right at me.
2:01 pm
and i looked at him. he had sunglasses on. i couldn't see his eyes. i froze. my first concern was where is laurie? what's happened to lori? and as soon as i did that, i took a look, and more shots came right at me. and i lifted up my hands. >> jesse: we are also learning how others sprung into action to save countless lives, including an army veteran who charge the government after his gun jammed. >> he got in his car. he lifted his rifle, i punched the car. he dropped the rifle. he turned the ignition on. if i saved a life, i saved a million lives. i'm happy that i did that. >> jesse: and an armed off-duty border patrol fired at the shooter as rabbi goldstein described. >> miraculously, just
2:02 pm
miraculously, the gun jammed. and in attendance at the synagogue, there was a border patrol off-duty agent with jonathan morales. worked for the board of patrol. please arm yourself when you are here. we never know when we will need it. >> jesse: we also learning just 5 minutes before he stormed in, the fbi got a tip about a threatening message she posted on social media. but investigators say it was already too late. so dana, important to narrate the villain in the situation, but also a lot of her roses ande discussed. >> dana: also some good timing. and i know that my husband i lived there for a while. there are amazing people there. it's quite a diverse crowd, right? you have the off-duty border patrol agent. it was very interesting to me to listen to the rabbi talk about
2:03 pm
asking him in the past, if you're going to be here, please bring your weapon because we never know when you will need it. after the synagogue shooting in pittsburgh, the synagogue there in california did an active shooter drill. and it does bring up something that we have talked about, whether it is schools or churches, it is a soft target. what are we going to do? the fbi has 5 minutes notice. they can't really do anything in 5 minutes. the shooter was not well organized. or well trained. he had hate in his heart, and he wanted to commit murder. he didn't know how to use his weapon. you also have somebody who bravely and courageously fought in iraq for us and was able to take him down. but i think that we do have to think about a couple of things in addition to what greg also saw in the media.
2:04 pm
this decision for soft targets, do you take that next step to go ahead and arm yourself? the police aren't always going to be able to get there, and you will not always have the benefit of having a former veteran in attendance, or an off-duty border patrol agent. to take him down. >> jesse: you mention of the media and sadly, greg, the media already politicizing this issue. let's listen and react. >> when you relate those two things, the anti-immigrant -- what happened at the tree of life, and then you couple that with the president's language, it's a big problem. >> the whole tenor and spirit of his politics gives these people what they see as a kind of permission. >> this is an epidemic, and we have a present too -- not only will he not acknowledge that we have an epidemic, he's providing the mood music for it.
2:05 pm
>> jesse: that's disgusting. >> greg: yeah. i didn't see any of that. i wish i hadn't. basically, that does nothing to help anyone. to your point, there were a lot of heroic stories. they drown out the scum, right? when you hear about the stuff and reduce it to the desire to commit a crime, instead of hearing about the scum who did it, you hear about the people who share the risk. things like 93. if everybody rushes, you share the risk it, but the shooter loses. i want to point out a fact. the new zealand, a month later, he posted his open later dominic letter. so you cannot tell me this is not a copycat. this has nothing to do with politics. it has to do with the desire for infamy and fame. there is an equation to copycat crimes. spectacle multiplied by a
2:06 pm
incentive equals bloodbath. because violence is on the decline, that means the media focuses pretty heavily on it. what crime is there? they might be local, they might not be, but there is less to cover, so you need to develop more coverage. you multiply that by the incentive for the spectacle, and you get copycat killings. so what we need is we need to shrink the media footprint. you know i month broken record on this, especially since this one was designed with the media in mind. they publish this manifesto. it's a copycat. they try to outdo each other. they try to outdo the previous guy, but luckily, people went after him. so i really do think it's idiotic to sit here and try to make links to -- we could easily link this to "the new york times." this cartoon, but we want to because we that's ludicrous. the anti-semitic cartoon did not
2:07 pm
cause this. so let's just leave that aside and focus on the fact that these are copycat crimes aided and abetted by the media spectacle, and if we shrink it, it will decline. i don't know how far from new zealand to l.a. if you're thousands of miles. yet they are linked by the same -- when you link losers together, that is the consequence. >> kennedy: did you notice that at least for me, there was very little reporting on his name. >> jesse: i think we've improved so much on this by focusing on the heroes and not even mentioning this dirtbag. 80% -- we saw a lot of this. kennedy. >> kennedy: i want to focus on people like lori kaye. the woman who through her body in front of the rabbi. the man who is delivering the word of god to the congregation on the last day of passover. that level of sacrifice, that something that happens in the moment. you don't contemplate that. she didn't have any thought.
2:08 pm
to her, that was a life or death decision, and it was a very easy one for her to make. that to me is so incredibly profound. it's impossible to put yourself in that situation, but it's tragic, and it's really beautiful to say that someone would sacrifice themselves in order to protect is what she sees the most sacred thing. also, oscar stewart, he was someone who relisted. he had been in the navy. enlisted in the army in order to defend his country. he ended up having the wherewithal to know that if he were within 5 feet of that shooter with a rifle, that he wouldn't be able to get to anyone else. those are two phenomenal stories. the >> juan: i just can't believe we are not talking about white nationalism. >> jesse: juan. >> juan: we have an epidemic of white nationals and terror.
