institute. i asked jones why democrats believe they can flip texas for the first time since the 1970s. >> demographics are changing and in fact, it is becoming bluer with less angle and morere population. and also donald trump who is a real liability for texas and the republicans. more latinos and more asian-americans and more people moving from the north here. and the transformation onor politics causing them to go a little more democratic.th does texas go blue in 2020? >> i don't think texas will go blue in 2020 and less joe biden is the candidate. >> raymond: it will be a pivotal election in 2020 not just for texans but the entire nation. it looks like the demographics of the suburbs around places are changing. and some are saying texas could flip blue as a result. if joe biden and donald trump were on the ticket, who would you vote for and who do you think would win this era? >> donald trump will definitely

win. a lot of people are coming from other parts of the country that are definitely changing the democrats in the greater houston area and texas in general. but i feel like there's too much success from donald trump. you can't argue with success. >> raymond: why would you do that? >> i think trump is crazy. [laughter] >> raymond: even with the economy roaring, i don't care for the native texan. >> no. i'm from kansas city. i don't think the demographics have changed that much since the last election. >> which do you think is stable? >> trump. >> because texas is always been republican. >> raymond: laura, as you heard from the lady in kansas city, it is changing demographically. 1 of 10 texas residents did not live here in 2012. this state has six of the ten fastest growing counties in the country. but the state, they have to pound the outer suburbs in the big urban areas 38 electoral votes hang in the balance. when beto o'rourke came along

he ends up getting indicted. so you ran and defeated everybody and it was a shock. friends of yours today describe you as kind, he's so nice. he's just so loved and mild mannered. then you have trump in texas. you know, the china shop, but he's a different type of candidate. but do you both have similar outlook on the financial issues social issues and, of course, on the need to enforce the southern border? >> pete: absolutely. you know, what we did is we had a strong grassroots organization. we never stopped working. we never took people for granted. d we never met a stranger and our values are the same as most people in texas, but especially in southwest texas that i represent. god, family, country important to us whether you call yourself a democrat or republican ultimately, we in texas and southwest texas hold those values dear.

we dealt with the pillars of thi issues, that is public safety education, property taxes health and human services, you know, those are the things we dealt with primarily as we went through our 17 counties and visited with folks from all spectrums from the big cities to the smallest towns out in the west on the border town. those are the issues that got us -- >> laura: senator, democrat are they going to flip the state? >> pete: no, ma'am, i don't think so. what you are hearing mostly is from a very vocal group, but a silent majority spoke in my race and they are going to speak again in 2020. and this state is no longer going to be a straight ticket voting state. it is a check the box in 2020. >> laura: thank god. >> pete: so no one can predict they will take it.o it is not, no one can say, but
