no, we want to start all over again. >> laura: well, tonight our league panel are here to tell you what you need to know and what everybody else is getting it wrong. jim comey told cbs that the fbi doesn't spy. the fbi's first ever assistant director of intelligence is here to tell us why the former director is lying to you. and raymond is here for seen and unseen. the media's race obsession over the royal baby. and frank will stop by on why the democrats are struggleing to get on message. first democrats hold america in contempt. -- that's the focus of tonight's anglin. oo "angle."

democrats in the house judiciary committee revealed themselves again. it's a depressing spectacle to see elected officials acting like meth dealers. after pushing russian collusion for 2 years. they were finally busted. no collusion. and no obstruction. but democrats refuse to accept reality and continue to sell their poison to scandal addicts on the left. >> the collusion report of the mueller report recounts the constant interaction of trump operatives with russian adversaries. >> you think there is no collusion and no objection? you have not read the mueller report. >> mr. trump gets on the telephone with mr. putin and has a 90 minute conversation where he can see on a phone call he smiled at him. >> that's your leader. the commander-in cheat.

>> laura: to keep the high going, democrats hold out bill barr 2 time attorney general as their new nemesis and create a phoney conflict on the redactions in the mueller report and on barr's refusal to testify again on the hill after the democrats changed the rules for his questioning. >> this is part of a cover-up. >> we have a constitutional responsibilities to engage in, one of which is possibly impeachment. how can we impeach without getting the documents? i ask my colleagues on the other side to stop obsfuicating. >> laura: that's a hard word to say. barr is not legally allowed to

release certain redacted parts of. it the democrats know this. most on the committee are lawyers. maybe they passed a different type of barr exam. barr bent over backwards to accommodate democrats but none of that matters. this is all theatre wrapped up in a bogus concern about congressional oversight. >> this obstruction means the end of congressional oversight. >> laura: i liked him better with the chicken. when he was holding the chicken. democrats have all they need to do their constitutional oversight. mueller spent 2 years and $30 million producing the report. if the democrats want to impeach the president, they should convene hearings tomorrow. democrats have been given the option by the doj to read

everything but a very minimally redacted copy of the mueller report. guess what? none of them have gone to review it or read it at the doj. that tells you all you need to know. after winning a majority in november, democrats promised results and focus. >> democrats pledge a new majority, our for the people agenda. lower healthcare costs and bigger paychecks and building infrastructure and clean up corruption to make america work for americans and not special interests. >> laura: what do they have to show the american people? nothing! >> i think it was maybe ranking member said we should be doing legislation and how many

signatures and bills were signed into law by this committee? ask mitch mcconnell who declared the senate is a grave yard for all legislation that comes from the house. we have passed outstanding legislation and it went to the grave yard. >> laura: more blame shifting from chicken man and more russian hysteria. they may have voted to hold the attorney general in contempt, but what they really did it to hold you the american people in contempt. i think most working people want government to function properly and stay out of their lives. if two recent polls are any indication the american people are letting the democrats know where they stand. a cnn poll showed 56% of the

americans approved the president's handling of the economy and a poll showed trump is enjoying the highest approval yet in their survey at 46%. at the same time in his presidency, barack obama was at 44% and he won his re-election. what is the real motivation on the part of the democrats? congressman jordan nailed it today. >> i don't think today is about getting information. i don't think it's about getting the un-redacted mueller report. i don't think last week's hearing was about having staff question the attorney general. it's about destroying bill barr because democrats are nervous he will get to the bottom of the thing. what can be done to a president can be done to any of us! this committee is supposed to look out for that fundamental fact more than anything else. we are not doing that today.

>> laura: exactly right. and given congress's most recent approval numbers, i would say the american people have held them in contempt for a long, long time. that's the "angle." joining now with reaction is robert ray, and harvey dillon. who served on trump's 2020 advisor council. robert, we will get what some of the same democrats were saying about eric holder's contempt of congress back in 2012. they are smearing a good man in order to what? wound trump or satisfy their base. do they have that wrong. they can't get at the president because they think they can say at most they are thinking about impeachment proceedings but not have the courage of their own convictions and failing to do

that, of course, prevents really a court from ordering the release of grand jury material. -- so the attorney general had no choice but to follow the law. they are holding him in contempt for it. i think the republicans on the house judiciary committee, congressman jordan among them, have correctly pointed out what is going on here is a failing an effort to successfully attack the president. they have now gone on to try to attack bill barr's integrity. remember he's only been in office less than 3 months as the attorney general under the president. but apparently that wasn't long enough before we find ourselves in a contempt proceeding which will go nowhere. we haven't changed anything other than sort of -- it's procedural gymnastics. i have to say as late as last night. the democrats were prepared to

trade away contempt proceedings as long as the attorney general agreed on behrends -- behalf of the justice department to release the grand jury material. that blows up the whole notion that it's political theatrics. >> laura: grand jury material are supposed to be kept secret. that ended up making for a huge debate today. this is how it all played out. let's watch. >> i think it is absolutely shocking that the majority of this committee is going to ask the chief law enforcement officer of the united states to commit a crime. >> nobody is asking the attorney general to disobey the law. we are asking the attorney

general to obey the law. >> laura: who is telling the truth? would barr violate the law by releasing the un-redacted mueller report? >> of course he would be. it's not his job to do the impeachment home work for the democrats by going to court and asking them to waive that obligation. in recent court cases, the d.c. circuit refused to make grand jury documents public even if they are 60 years old. these are despicable lies by the democrats. these are the dealers who are using some meth themselves. they are so addicted to the narrative they can't give it up. it's an awful spectacle. as you pointed out, cummings,

nancy pelosi, hoyer and nadler 7 years ago, they had big thoughts about the proceedings of contempt against eric holder. he had given nothing and stone walled cong for over 400 days. then he only gave the documents after he left office. >> laura: yes. they rushed this whole thing. robert, the democrats are rushing any possibility of accommodations between the justice department and democrats. they went back and forth saying we will accommodate you as they can. they don't want any of that. back to her point. i want to play some. old sound from 7 years ago that the democrats were dismissing this whole idea of contempt. i think we have it.

let's watch. >> contempt of congress, contempt of congress not only to monopolize his time, to undermine his name. >> some of my colleagues on the other side seem almost giddy about today's vote. after turning this investigation into an election year witch hunt. >> laura: [laughing]. i love the witch hunt! the witch hunt word is back. it depends on whose ox is gored. >> consistency is the goblin of little minds. i was paying attention in law school. i don't understand the point of a contempt proceeding under these circumstances where the attorney general is following the law. that's why they are citing him for contempt. look, it's not a constitutional crisis. this is blown out of proportion.

i do think it's the last gasps effort on a road that the democrats are not going to take which would be impeachment. they are attempting to do the next best thing until the american people say enough and the country's attention turns to a reelection campaign. and on solving the problems of the country. we have 3 carrier groups in the persian gulf. a revolution in venezuela. >> laura: we have our border. i just left the border. the border is a nightmare. and these democrats would turn a blind eye to that? they don't call that a crisis? they call barr not giving them grand jury material a crisis? that's a scandal. >> this proceeding went all day long and the vote didn't happen until 4:30.

no legislation happens today. >> laura: that's a total joke. i want to play one thing quickly. this is chris christie today. >> let's not get breathless. holder was held in contemp of congress for fast and furious. what happened? nothing. the prosecution for contempt of congress is referd to the justice department and holder said i prefer not to be prosecuted. that was the end of that. no u.s. attorneys were going to prosecute him for contempt of congress. this was not unprecedented. it's not unprecedented in the last decade. >> laura: we are almost out of time. i see him sitting next to jeff sessions. christie cuts right through it. you don't know basic constitutional law. it's embarrassing. >> absolutely. none of the 3 ways to pursue

contempt work in real life. arresting people and the other two civil and criminal. they never get prosecuted. and jerry nadler has chosen to pursue the slowest moving failed effort which he knows is going nowhere. he is really filibustering. the reason they ask the attorney general to go to court. if they go to court, they will say that's a political question. >> they will lose if they go there on their own. this was all a ploy to leverage the attorney general to join that application. he doesn't have to. >> laura: we have to go. guys, phenomenal analysis. we have two of the other smartest legal minds in the country. john will tell us why the

john, i will start with you. democrats love to call the president's language reckless. what about what we heard from nadler? calling what happened today a constitutional crisis, john? >> laura, as you suggested it's not a crisis. it might be a confrontation. as you rightly point out, this is the way the framers designed the constitution to work. gave congress some power, the right to conduct hearings and gave the executive branch powers. part is the right to keep confidential communications in certain kinds of work product. they didn't expect you would run to court right away to litigate and go to the supreme court to ask for their permission. they said ambition should counter act ambition. let the two branches fight it out and work through the political process. >> laura: we will get to don jr.

testifying in a moment. did the executive branch waive executive privilege already? that's what the democrats are saying already? >> their are two things. they waived executive privilege with respect to the mueller report released to the public. congress doesn't just want the un-redacted mueller report. they want all of the background information. witness interviews and grand jury information. with respect to the question about mcgahn, you can testify in a proceeding. i can decide to testify at the grand jury if i am later indicted. i can make the decision at trial i won't testify.

it's a different proceeding. >> laura: can mcgahn say i want to testify. with the president prevent him from testifying? does that look like the president wants to hide something? >> this is the core of executive privilege upheld by the supreme court in the watergate tapes case. the supreme court said communications between the president and his top advisors are protected. in that case, they might have been protected against the need by the courts to resolve the watergate tapes. they would be protected. even though mcgahn is not working for them anymore he can still invoke the privilege like if we have an attorney and fire

him, our attorney client privilege is still protected. >> laura: why did they let the white house counsel testify? that was a huge mistake. >> u.s. versus nixon was a prosecutor against the president. this is just the congress. courts typically stay out of it. >> laura: it's a political question. late news broke that the senate intel committee is subpoenaing don jr. to testify regarding this trump tower project in moscow. john, don jr. said they already agreed to appear so why subpoena him? >> i don't get. it i warped in the senate. i signed congressional subpoenas.

i think this is a smaller version. people are over-reacting. >> laura: they are calling out the ranking republican richard burr, saying what are you doing? it has been to be happening in the house. it can't be happy i-- happening in the senate. >> i don't understand it. with burr, he tries to pick and choose what he wants to answer. then they have to issue a subpoena. i am just guessing. >> laura: and the interview on this show and being asked about the trump tower project, you cleared up a lot for our viewers. coming up, if you thought 2020

>> who should represent us as president of the united states? i hope they are stirring. i see signs of it and they will vote their values. >> laura: maybe he is throwing his hat in the ring? he could be in the running for the presidency? >> it's inappropriate for a former director of the fbi to enter partisan politics. think about those statements mean to the brick agency of the fbi. it's demoralalizing when the former lead calls for the american people to elect one party to office. it damages their ability to be seen as non-partisan. james comey's ego is uncontrollable. he needs to stop doing this.

he is hurting the fbi. >> laura: the ranking member, kevin, of the house judiciary spoke out. >> without any administrative reason we can only assume the democrats have resolved to sully bill barr's good name and they are afraid of what the attorney general will find when he completes his investigation into the fisa warrant. >> laura: they don't like bill barr investigating the investigators? >> not at all and james comey saying he lacks inner strength. >> laura: kevin you said something about the fbi's use of confidential informants. they use them, but particularly the way they were used at the

origins of this mueller investigation? >> that's right. the fbi has strict guidelines using sources again a u.s. person. there has to be substantial predication to do that. against george papadopoulos and others, they could not have the retired pred cat to do that. one thing making james comey nervous is they call it outside the line. >> laura: we hit the legal aspect of this charade on capitol hill. holding a new attorney general in contempt. the political ramifications, do you think americans are saying there is a constitutional conference after barr testified for hours and hours last week? >> no, and i get a kick of bernstein on cnn yapping about a

constitutional crisis for 9 months. a constitutional crisis is one we will know it. when you have to advocate on behalf of it, there is not one. this is part of the democrat's strategy. it doesn't matter who they tar, they are tarring a good man, an attorney general who actually makes decisions like not lynch who rescued herself about hillary clinton. this attorney general made the hard calls. that's what attorney generals do. >> laura: and kevin, woodward was on another network saying this is a dire governing crisis. they are running out of descriptions for the crisis. they are not actually doing work for the american people. they will are doing charades day in and out. >> the crisis of loss of trust

earlier. 56% on the economy and above where barack obama was at this point in his presidency. let's listen. >> democrats say they care about the poor but their open border policies drive down wages and drain social services and hurt the poorest americans more than anybody else. >> laura: i just came back from the border. we do have an open border. how do democrats respond to this? >> the first thing si would say to the president instead of making a statement. ask the question. who does the open border hurt the most? that causes people to answer it themselves rather than hearing somebody else answer it for them. you get an extra 5 or 10 points. i would make that stylistic change. the public doesn't believe in open borders. they believe in security and safety.
