reporting begins today with an impromptu presidential q&a session. president trump talking about the north korean missile launches to upcoming trade talks with china that could affect global markets. more in just a moment. the president also weighed in on the intelligence committee subpoena for his son, don jr. republicans control that committee pitting the president's son against his father's own party. president trump says his son is a good person and that he's already given investigators everything they've requested. >> frankly for my son, after being exonerated to now get a subpoena to go again and speak again after close to 20 hours of telling everybody that would listen about a nothing meeting? yeah, i'm surprised. >> shepard: when a reporter asked the president would he would fight the subpoena, the president said we'll see what
12:02 pm
happens. john roberts reporting live from the white house. john? >> shep, good afternoon to you. this has been going on for some time now. when donald trump jr. first did an interview with the staff members of the senate select committee on intelligence in december of 2017, he agreed to stay as long as they wanted him to state, which amounted to nine hours to answer questions with the understanding that it would be a one and done-type of a fair, that he wouldn't have to come back. multiple sources tell us that recently the committee invited donald trump jr. back to answer more questions. according to a source close to trump jr., he tried to make an accommodation with the committee offering written information, even saying that he would consider coming back in person for an hour or two if the follow up questions were limited to select topics. the committee we're told wanted an open-ended time commitment and had some 10 to 12 topics to cover, including trump tower meeting back in 2016 in the
12:03 pm
summer and the trump tower moscow project. both topics had been explored by the committee and the special counsel, robert mueller, who found no evidence of wrong doing on trump jr.'s part. the president weighing in on that earlier today. >> i was very surprised. i saw richard burr saying there's no collusion. now he's testified for 20 hours or something. a massive amount of time. the mueller report came out. that is the bible, the mueller report came out. they said he did nothing wrong. >> richard burr is the chairman of the committee. a source close to the president says trump jr. believes they want to compare what michael cohen is in jail for lying to congress and compare what he said to what don jr. said, that the president didn't know about the trump tower meeting and donald trump jr. had only peripheral involvement in the trump tower moscow project.
12:04 pm
it appears that is exactly what democrats want to do. listen to senator richard blumenthal of connecticut. >> i want to hear about what the truth is as to what he said to his father about the meeting in trump towers with russian agents. why he said he was only peripherally aware with the moscow negotiations when he was in the thick of it. he truly misled the judiciary committee. now he needs to be held accountable. >> the source that we spoke to donald trump jr. says if the committee needs the information, donald trump jr. will find a way to get it to them. the source questioned is the committee looking for a sound bite or are they looking for the information here. at the same time that this is going on, democrats are now trying to figure out when to schedule a vote in the entire house of representatives to hold the attorney general, bill barr, in contempt of court for
12:05 pm
refusing to hand over the unredacted version of the mueller report and the background investigative materials. nancy pelosi asked if she agreed with the judiciary committee chairman gerald nadler that the nation is in a constitutional crisis. in answering that question, seemed to indicate that there may be more contempt of congress charges ahead. listen here. >> this administration wants to have a constitutional crisis because they do not respect the oath of office that they take to protect and defend the -- to support the constitution of the united states. >> well, i was expecting her to say in terms of timing when we're ready, we'll come to the floor and see because there might be some other contempt of congress issues that we might want to deal with at the same time. shep, she did not elaborate on all of that. we do know that the white house is in a wrestling match with congress over documents that were subpoenaed from don mcgahn,
12:06 pm
the white house also considering whether don mcgahn will or will not appeal before the house judiciary committee. a lot of potential or a lot of contempt of congress and more battles ahead, shep. >> shepard: it would appear. the president today also went after the previous administration. >> he did. he accused john kerry of getting in the way of negotiations or at least diplomacy between the united states and iran. in an interview with hugh hewitt on september 12 of last year, kerry said he had spoken with the iranian minister three to four times saying what i've done is try to elicit what iran might be able to do in order to change the dynamic in the middle east for better. he said he was blunt and told them the world does not appreciate what is happening with missiles, hezbollah and yemen. the president saw that involvement as kerry trying to go around the state department and conduct his own diplomacy.
12:07 pm
listen here. >> what i'd like to see with iran, i'd like to see them call me. john kerry speaks to them. he tells them not to call. that is a violation of the logan act. he should be prosecuted on that. my people don't want to do anything that is -- only the democrats do that kind of stuff. >> a spokesperson for john kerry begged to differ with the president saying everything president trump said is wrong, end of story. he's wrong about the facts the law and sadly wrong about how to use diplomacy to keep america safe. secretary kerry helped to negotiate the nuclear agreement with iran. he said we hope the president would focus on solving foreign policy problems for american instead of attacking his predecessors for theater. tensions ratcheting up with the united states and iran which is why we're moving a carrier group in the gulf just in case and why secretary of state pompeo went to iraq in recent days.

shep? >> shepard: john roberts with his bag pipes. the relationship with the united states and north korea is unraveling as both sides test out some missiles and the united states targets north korea's bank account. we're just learning that a navy submarine is expected to test fire an unarmed long range nuclear missile off the coast of cape canaveral later today, this as the trump administration confiscate one of north korea's largest cargo ships trying to ship out coal, which is a violation of sanctions. the assistant attorney general said the sanctions busting ship is now out of service. earlier today, north korean and american military officials launched test missiles minutes apart. u.s. officials say the timing was a coincidence. south korean officials say the rogue nation launched two short

range missiles. north korean's foreign minister called the launch routine and a self-defensive military drill. president trump said the white house is seriously monitoring the situation. >> we're taking a good look. we'll see. the relationship continues. we'll see what happens. they want to negotiate. they talk about it but i don't think they're ready to. >> shepard: back in february, talks between president trump and kim jong-un about a possible nuclear agreement fell apart during their second summit in hanoi and vietnam. north korea's test this week are the country's first missile launches since november of 2017. rich edson reporting live from the state department. rich? >> shep, since that hanoi summit, officials say the discussions and negotiations with the north koreans have stalled. secretary of state mike pompeo was supposed to be in greenland today. officials say he cut that trip short, returned to the
12:10 pm
washington area this morning. officials say the reason was to discuss iran, but now because of these missile launches when he was on his way, that is a subject that will be folded into why the secretary is here and not in greenland. previously secretary pompeo has talked about the more recent north korean missile launches and said they are of a shorter range, they'd never cross any international borders and never threatened the united states. also, there was a pledge from kim jong-un last year that north korea would not fire any long range icbms and these launches, the more recent launches seemed to adhere to that pledge. if you take in the more recent launches and the rhetoric from north korea, it's a much more aggressive stance from the north koreans than we have seen. kim jong-un has been demanding that the united states relent on sanctions relief. the united states has said no. essentially the only way the u.s. is giving up on sanctions
12:11 pm
is if north korea gets rid of their nuclear weapons. today when all this is happening, he's in seoul, south korea. >> shepard: what more do we have on the seizing of the coal ship? >> the justice department says this is part of what they call a cycle of sanctions evasion. the united nations banned cole exports. the operators of the ship tried to evade the location or tried to disguise where it was. the state department said --
