to unveil a brand-new immigration plan targeting the overwhelming backlog of asylum-seekers as administration officials call the situation at the border extreme. griff jenkins live in washington with what we can expect today. >> reporter: what we expect is the white house's push on immigration. the president signed into law and jared kushner along with stephen miller yesterday for a lunch meeting briefing them on the broad outlines of a plan in the works for weeks. few details were available but we expect to address border security and asylum backed laws and the past illegal migration which will change the latest currently done. after the meeting lindsey graham told reporters, quote, i don't think it is designed to get democratic support as much as it is to unify the republican party around border security. graham is holding a press conference at 10:00 to unveil his own legislation to address

the crisis at the border and we expect highlights of the plan to include addressing the much cited florez agreement that prevents officials from holding on 20 days, increasing it to 100 days and adding 500 immigration judges to wipe out the asylum backlog. that has 130,000 cases with an average wait time of 729 days. this comes as acting secretary of defense patrick shanahan says the president is deeply concerned that things are getting worse. >> he said i need better results. deliver more. the situation is extreme. fix it. that is why we are here. there has never been lack of commitment to fixing it. it is just with these trends and increases it is getting worse. >> reporter: you can hear more of the exclusive interview with shanahan later on "fox and friends". one note, it is unclear whether

your overall thoughts on this plan? >> absolutely agree with those points. i've not read the entire language yet but just a month ago on fox i hope to somewhere there was a sequestered of good language and could be legislatively past to help this situation and i'm glad to see senator graham taking this on. shannon: can it be legislatively past? that's the problem we run into over and over. >> he will face a challenge. it is a threat and the risk at the border right now. it is untenable and it should be a bipartisan interest and the parties are fighting it out. i hope they can find a solution. heather: i don't see how it is not bipartisan interest when we look at these numbers. these were just for april. the southwest border total

apprehensions, look at 2019, 109,000 compared to numbers in the past, 2018, just over 51,000 and then it goes down from there. the numbers are overwhelming. back to what we were talking about in terms of asylum and those seeking asylum. you have some information on that as well, legitimate asylum-seekers. >> statistics show 7% of those crossing illegally into the united states and attempting to claim credible fear asylum were or refugee status actually qualify. the rest are taking advantage of the chaos being released into the us but that is different from 10 years ago when 90% plus return to their countries after attempting to enter illegally. now they are all being released
