tv The Ingraham Angle FOX News May 16, 2019 11:00pm-12:00am PDT
11:00 pm
and what is left in the news. for them there is a red line in all these issues about the dossier, all of the issues involving spying, they dismiss them. >> don't miss tomorrow night. let your heart not be troubled. >> it's great to see you as always. looking forward to the special tomorrow night. i'm laura ingraham, this is the "ingraham angle" from washington. big exclusive, first american interview since being pardoned former media baron can rod black is here live later in the hour. kellyanne conway, george papadopoulos, ed rendell. dan patrick. e first, america for whom? that's the focus of tonight's angle. if you somehow thought that donald trump would shy away from tackling big issues after republicans lost the house last november, you would be wrong. from china trade to infrastructure and now immigration he's shown fans that he's not just marking time, he's
11:01 pm
pursuing what he believes will make america great american. lifting up the american worker the american family, and the american tradition. >> president trump: our proposal is pro american, pro immigrant and pro worker. it's just common sense. it will help all of our people including millions of devoted immigrants to achieve the american dream.f >> laura: his plan would basically end the current legal immigration dynamic under which 1.1 million people are given green cards to live and work ino the united states, they don't reduce the number but the frame work changes. 66% of all legal immigrants cana come through chain migration. sometimes they will describe it as distant family migration. now, all of them are admitted regardless of professional capability or english proficiency. >> president trump: the biggest
11:02 pm
change we make is to increase the proportion of highly skilled immigration from 12% to 57%, and we'd like to even see if we can go higher. this will bring us in line with other countries, and make us globally competitive. >> laura: in other words, a merit-based system is what the white house wants to create. kind of makes sense, doesn't it? versus what we have now. well, it doesn't make sense to nancy. >> i want to just say something about the word that they use merit. it is really a con descending word. are they saying family is without merit? are they saying most of the people who come to the united states in the history of our country are without merit because they don't every an engineering degree? l >> laura: that's what they're saying. it's breathtakingly disingenuous or ignorant or both. it brings us to a question though.
11:03 pm
ours is a country for whom exactly? is it for anyone who comes across a river and recites a script? is it for people who truly go through the legal process? what want to be american, in every sense of the word. american citizens black, brown asian, white who work their tails off every day to support themselves, and their families. well i choose the latter. and those people who desperately want to be american in a legal way. now, right now we flood the country with more people, legal and illegal. what happens is we make it tougher for native-born americans who are already struggling. >> president trump: unfortunately the currentic immigration rules allow foreign workers to substitute fores americans seeking entry-level jobs. america's immigration system should bring in people who will expand opportunity for strivings low-income americans, not to
11:04 pm
compete with those low-income americans. >> laura: he's exactly right job creators, better than people dependent on the system. i also want to say this, don't buy into the malarky the chamber of commerce recites endlessly that america needs millions and millions of more workers. the real translation for we have a worker shortage is we don't want to raise wages. they never like it when wages are going up. if you believe in supply and demand a tight labor market means that wages are going up. and the wages go up, that leadsg to happier workers. and maybe even happier voters in 2020. and maybe even people who are having bigger families which is also good for society. now, whatever you think of trump's frame work on immigration it is a heck of a lot more than the democrats are doing which is nothing. d now, last week we took you to del rio, texas, the secretary sector of the border, nothing short of shocking.
11:05 pm
our absurd laws, rulings by radical judges have basically incentivized widespread fraud and the cartels doing all of the human drug trafficking are fat and happy, while regular americans have to suffer. this must stop. congress should stay in session until they pass the necessary legislation to close all ofsa these loopholes and end this madness. now, at the current pace by the end of this calendar year, we will have caught and released almost 1 million migrants into the united states here to wrap your head around that they year. activists aren't buying it, they don't want you to know the facts. new jersey alliance for immigrant justice issued this statement, this plan is a continuation of steven miller's scheme to impose hits white supremacy ideology on the american people with anti-immigrant and racist
11:06 pm
attacks by punishing immigrants and asylum seekers. they're so predictable, they're actually boring. we heard from americans whose lives been shattered because of illegal immigration. the wife and brother of police officer killed by an illegal immigrant in the sanctuary state of california said this.th >> you're the only one that actually reached out and saidou gave your condolence to the family, and that means a lot to all of our law enforcement families that are here. >> this family, the sync family supports him. whatever he does for law enforcement. the white house has reached out to us multiple times. i don't think that has ever happened before, ever. this man is amazing. >> laura: kamala harris, i don't believe, contacted the singh family. democrats are unproved by -- not moved by stories like this
11:07 pm
killing, the human toll. they don't want to acknowledge it. but let's make one thing clear trump also focusing on border enforcement and the need on change the system alsoee appreciates as we all do that legal immigrants add tremendously and have consistently to the nation's unfolding story. our economy and our culture. any media person who says differently about trump and what he believes is lying to you. the president also correctly understands that our safety, our security, our american culture and our prosperity have at times then compromise and our people harmed by feckless politicians who would rather complain on msnbc than offer a way forward. the president is now calling their bluff with his sensible plan. that's "the ankle." despite the common sense of trump's immigration plan still in broad stroke form, why are democrats reflectively rejecting any type of compromise? even though joe biden claims to be the consensus builder, hasmp
11:08 pm
left reality behind on immigration. >> i think that anyone who is in a situation where they need w to?-- regardless of documented or undocumented, we have an obligation. not people breaking down the gates. the biggest thing we have to do just calm down the rhetoric. >> laura: i love it when they say tone down the rhetoric. that means that we are winning. dan patrick and ed rendell former governor of pennsylvania what is biden really offering? criticize the. -- criticized the president proces is framework that it is not enough, doesn't reduce immigration whatever the criticism is, okay we'll just let it hang. the democrats are doing nothing. i didn't understand what he was saying about healthcare for anyone who comes here illegallyt
11:09 pm
>> i couldn't hear it, but i think what the democrats are offering is to go back to the bipartisan bill that passed the senate, with 68 votes, that's a lot of republican votes and democratic votes, four years ago. o that was a comprehensive solution to the immigration plan. then add some of the elements that the president wants. for example, i think, had the opportunity for people to graduate from american colleges and from american graduate schools to get immediate green cards. those are the people who are going to be there five, ten years. he has created a guest worker. >> laura: no one is clamoring for that except the gamer about of commerce. if i hear guest worker, we finally have american wages going up and the only thing we hear from the chamber of commerce is we need more workers. i'm sorry, but that will kill the republican party if their answer to everything, maybe thel democrats want it, they want new voters. that will kill the republican
11:10 pm
party. trump won campaigning against the chamber of commerce. he stood up to the republican elite who want amnesty first and enforcement second. >> laura, he's on the chamber of commerce. >> laura: hold on, ed, i want to get dan's reaction to something else that trump said today. let's watch. >> president trump: future immigrants will be required to learn english and to pass a civics exam prior to admission. >> laura: isn't that reasonable? >> not only is it reasonable but can i tell you so many people in texas that i know who came from mexico, and their families came and their family was not let them speak spanish at home. they insisted they learn english. news anchors i worked with. you talk about a number before here's a number that will startle your viewers.
11:11 pm
the census projects that we will have about 4 million babies born in america next year. this year, laura, 5 millionye illegals will cross into this country. one million we catch and as you learned on the border we get one out of every four or five. the one million we catch and the four million we don't. we have more people coming in illegally than we have babies born. the president is right to say we have a right as a nation to select who comes to america. you know who's selecting them now? the drug cartels, rounding up the families, 63,000 last month crossed the border, 30,000 single men, rushed them across certain parts of the border then they send the others up the middle with the drugs and the contra band. the democrats in my view and i don't use this word lightly this is treasonous what's happening. they're selling out our nation. the president, his plan is sensible. when ed, and i respect the former governor of pennsylvania i used to live in pennsylvania
11:12 pm
governor, but the truth is, all old plans that the democrats agreed to never talked about a barrier. never talked about border security. never. when you make that pledge governor, then the republicansns will listen.ed we must secure the border first and then have legal immigration where we select who comes here.r >> laura: ed, your reaction?av >> myself and most democrats are in favor of steps that will support the border. >> let's do it now. -- secure the border. >> the one i talked about, gave billions of more dollars to hire more border guards. >> we can have all the guards if we don't have a barrier to help the guards. >> number two, mayor, as far as illegal immigration, which american president in recent times supported the most illegal immigrants crossing into america illegally? president trump? no.. president obama.ri imported more illegal immigrants. >> laura: what happened to the democrat party, why are they not talking about deporting people
11:13 pm
now, hundreds of thousands haven't shown up for their deportation hearings.rt every single one of them should leave our country. they don't respect our system don't have a right to be here if they can't show up for their proceedings. that is not being cool with the american system i don't know why democrats who used to be hawkish on the border are suddenly open borders.w why have democrats changed? >> first of all, no one view of the democratic party, it's made up by a lot of different views. >> it's one view. >> no it's not one view. i told you, president obama deported more people than president trump. >> laura: where's president obama's leadership, he can talk about how we need to deport more people, i'm happy to have hissi help. >> the answer is, you need a comprehensive solution to immigration. >> laura: we can't do anything until we do amnesty? we can't do anything? we have a crisis but we have to legalize a million people first?
11:14 pm
>> you should try, no, laura?-- >> typical democrat answer wait wait, wait. >> i'm not saying wait, let's do immigration reform bill now. and let's compromise on both sides of the issue f we did it in good spirit we can get it done.ot >> we have a raging fire on the border, 100,000 a month coming over one million this year. we have to secure the border. >> laura: this is dangerous yes, it's a dangerous situation for the migrants, for the american people, it's a dangerous situation. i saw with it my own eyes, it's worse than i thought. thank both of you for coming on. we're joined by counselor to the president kellyanne conway. i want to play the challenges we saw down at the border last week.. let's watch. >> we have to remove from the field patrol to fill bottles. many of us are parents.
11:15 pm
we know how to change diapers and we know how to feed bottles. [speaking spanish] >> washington. >> laura: this goes on "you tube," figured out how to crawl released within 24 hours. after seeing this, my instinct is to say deal and focus all of the administration's rhetoric on that? dan is right, it is a raging fire at the border, fire of humanity endangering themselves and our country. we're talking about legal immigration. i'm not getting that. >> there's two points to the president's big proposal, full and final border security, which he's been talking about for four years he's been running for and being president.
11:16 pm
the second part is the modernization and merit-based immigration system. you at least went down to the border. the president's plan does the same thing. he's talking to the professionals 59 the border what do they need. he's not bothering with the people in congress. they fail to act. they can just fix things so that we, the court decisions that compels us to release kids afte 20 days. we have the opportunity other than to do that.. they can fix it. but they fail to act. so the president is taking it on. this is full and final border security. you have one million people coming into the country. now, this year. illegally. and i think when some people catch and release may not be aware catch and release means into the interior, not to theire home country. for years the flow was single males from mexico, they could be returned to their home country. not allowed to do that now with the flow of children and adults. >> laura: what is the purpose of this plan. f i think there is a lot of good stuff it in. >> two big things. >> laura: what is the primary
11:17 pm
legislation. >> it would be if we could get the democrats to read the plan and come and talk to us about it. this president wants full and final border security, all of the loopholes at the border close them, give the border agents what they've been asking for, more technology, the barrier, the wall, we will have about 400 miles of it, even thee newspapers are saying that. "washington post"-abc poll reported 17% increase among democrats from january when chuck and nancy said manufacture a crisis to april, calling it a crisis now. they've seen the pictures. border security means that closing the loopholes, having that barrier. >> laura: that you said congress isn't going to do it. blumenthal, richard blumenthal from my home state?-- >> who cares? >> laura: he said it's despicable demogoguery. is this really a 2020 platform for all republicans? >> we would love congress to come to the white house tomorrow
11:18 pm
and find way to act on, this at least read it. that is dismissive demogoguery doesn't even matter if blumenthal that will isn't going to read it. this is not a 2020 document. we're interested in 2019. in addition to full border security, it modernizes a system that has not been touched since 1965. 54 years. members of congress certainly are not term limited but fresh and limited ideas for immigration was term limited a long time. a lot of people like the status quo. this focuses on the immediate family not just adding. >> laura: can you still sponsor minor children. >> and parents, no question. >> laura: why is e-verify, a lot of us hoped the president talked about that so often, steven miller is a big fan, if you stop the employment for these people they won't come. >> this is two big fronts that
11:19 pm
we felt comfortable putting forward now, because the president sees the urgency and the exigency of border security. and we want to shine a light nobody in congress has botheredr to touch the legal immigration system in 54 years. they pretend they're worried about the children, present tend they're worried about the family. if they were, they would do something about girls at the ages of our borders, pumped up with birth control on the treacherous journey, tested for pregnancy. if they don't know what happens to those kids once they get here?-- >> laura: the kids were traumatized. >> of course they are, they come on that journey with nos guarantee, lied to by the coyotes who take their life savings and worse for many of them. the democrats want it as 2020 issue. we'd like to resolve this in 2019. >> laura: any thought of reducing the number, 1.1 million, the president ran hard on reexamining that, steven miller was for lowering immigration, until we get the border issue solved.
11:20 pm
pause immigration, except for extreme cases. >> this is merit based, in this country 12% of our illegal immigration comes from employability. 66% comes from family ties. flip it, canada has it flipped. new zealand has it flipped. we're look agent a system more aligned with other countries who, yes, welcome immigrants. also, this ridiculous raise the wage artificially or get minimum wage. rate is $22. >> laura: don't let them flood the country with more people. >> people need to come here>> legally and get one of the 7.5 million jobs. >> laura: thanks for staying up late. former trump advisor george papadopoulos brings us tales of the deep state traps set for him. state traps set for him.
11:24 pm
>> it's not just like >> it's not just like papadopoulos drops in out of nowhere. you have all of this stuff going on in the summer before we get to papadopoulos information, you have all of this information coming out about what the russians are doing, with the hang hacking and the dumping of e-mails, intended to have an impact on the political system. then in the midst of that
11:25 pm
that's when we get the papadopoulos information. >> laura: well, that's from former general counsel of the fbi, jim baker about our next guest. george stephanopolous?-- no papadopoulos, said that he has only just begun to lay out the time line of when he believes the obama intel agencies were attempting to entrap him. he joins us now. george, what haven't you revealed to date, how many agencies were coming after you one person, and something that they tried to get your girlfriend to do? what was that? >> oh, my god. thanks for having me, laura. besides the fbi trying to have my then-girlfriend, now wife wear a wire to try to entrap me herself which was completely crazy, she was an italian citizen visiting me as a
11:26 pm
girlfriend, they subpoenaed her and tried to flip her againstg me, incredibly bizarre. what we believed that they, really tar getted her for, she knew all about joseph mips and connections to the italian government and his connections in europe. we found out today the italian government under the presidency of that country, the prime minister, just fired the heads of three intel agencies in italy. i think it has to do with the person, joseph, who the president and devin nunes and other people have been asking to examine more. he's at the core of this scam. >> laura: people forget about this figure. it starts to read like a john lecarre novel. you've heard the democrats. they're saying this was well predicated, brennan last night we'll play the video. he was on television last night again. and claiming that this was all
11:27 pm
-- this was all cope a static watch . >> i think it's important there's an understanding how strongly predicated that investigation was. i was there in the summer of '16, it was well predicated. >> laura: well predicated george? >> i want to make it clear, by the time i joined the trump campaign before my name was public, an fbi intermediary at a company i used to work for in london introduced me to this person that at a school, which the cia and fbi trains at. fast forward to april 2016, i'm the australian government is reaching out trying to connect with me, 10 downing street, and then which i find suspicious is that the dia reached out to me at the u.s. embassy in london. two individuals, gregory baker and terrance dudley, just days before this infamous meeting with alex downer, testified under oath and i've reported both to the fbi and bob muller
11:28 pm
that i felt he was spying to me. something i want to make sure about this meeting with downer i don't think i was just suspicious he was spying to me in my transcripts to transcripts you see mark meadows and john asking if i was handed transcripts with any of these people that were running into me. i said no. congress has transcripts, they know, the president knows these people were spying. it will be a big bombshell. >> laura: oh, this is good. >> going to be great. >> laura: now you have gotten me really interested, love the from time to time tidbit. thank you. now we can pick up on a storyry that we began to tell you last night. a source is now telling the "ingraham angle" that e-mails communications from december from december 2016 reveal while former director jim comey thought the infamous dossier was
11:29 pm
flimsy he agreed to add to it the original assessment into russian interference. he even briefed president trump about the claims that were made about him inside that dossier. now, his flimsy intelligence ever abused, was it ever abused in such an outrageous manner. who better to ask than mr.?brock, former assistant director of intel for the fbi. this is wild, kevin. we seem to now know that comey understood this was, quote unreliable which we understand was the word used. >> if americans are confused at this point they should be. even veteran counter intelligence investigators are a little confused. >> laura: george papadopoulos it's five different days but sunday. it was crazy. >> two points. number one, the dossier was used, we know, because the fbi admitted it, as the basis for the fisa want against carterr page. they took it seriously, contrary
11:30 pm
to what james baker said, they took it seriously and literally they swore to it in a court. now there's obfuscation betweenn james comey, john brennan, and james clapper about how can they use this dossier in an intelligence report, should they report it to the president. it's already been used in a want. the fbi shouldn't be involved in these conversations with the intelligence.. >> laura: but the conversations that they possess now, the government possesses, bill barr the attorney, u.s. attorney in connecticut, where he says that it's unreliable. if those communications actuall exist, what kind of trouble could comey be in? >> not only that, and comey is consistently characterized as a
11:31 pm
salacious and unverified, why did he swear to it. >> laura: but unreliable. why are you bringing it to the president? >> exactly. the reason is, i think, most people are becoming suspicious that they wanted to it get out. they wanted it to become public knowledge.e.en forget about an intelligence assessment they wanted it for the benefit of everybody to know about for those reasons probably.ta it's a little bit tangled. to your earlier point about poor mr.?papadopoulos targeted by a number of sources that look like they had relationships with multiple agencies, no offense to george papadopoulos, but he was kind of on the fringes of the campaign. >> laura: advisory board. but maybe they thought he was an easy target. >> target of convenience perhaps. but it doesn't look like, this is why, i think, bill barr is justified. in asking for an investigation by durham. because the predication does look a little thin. >> laura: nellie orr deleted enmails exchanged with doj bruce orr, her husband, courtesy of
11:32 pm
john solomon. that's 101 obstruction of justice. thank you, great to see you. up next the latest higher education scam by the college board. wait until you hear about thell other education racket this group was behind. nd. you wouldn't accept an incomplete job from any one else. why accept it from your allergy pills? flonase relieves your worst symptoms including nasal congestion, which most pills don't. flonase helps block 6 key inflammatory substances. most pills only block one. flonase.

live forget merit, a new tool considered by the college board could tip the scales. n fox news confirming the makers of the s.a.t. rolling out an evaluation of students' adversity. the score is calculated by variety of neighborhood, family high school environmental factors. which includes crime, poverty income, educational level whether you're a single parent household, etc., etc. how does one quantify adversity? as the son of an alcoholic who is a million air, what what do you get? student athlete who suffered devastating injury and thus lost
11:37 pm
an opportunity for a scholarship. where would that rate? joining me to debate this, leo terrell, attorney and former high school teacher, leo, i love that, i love teachers. and cooper, co-chair of project 21. i'll take you out to dinner, we will have so much fun. horace cooper. this feels like it could be a proxy for race-based admissions. >> that's exactly what this is. here's the thing. a lot of the lawsuits are getting to the courts and the courts are making it harder and harder to use race as a proxy. you come up with this adversity score, and then you don't tell the student what his score is and the schools get to decide which portions of it. what they are actually getting to do is throw away deq perform
11:38 pm
well in school, do you have aptitude, those kinds of things are with what the sap is supposed to do. now if you don't want an s.a.t. that's fine, but what you shouldn't be allowed to do is have the s.a.t. company work int tandem with the affirmative action crowd that's just giving more advantage to one group over another group. >> laura: now, pugh research found most americans say that race or ethnicity shouldn't be considered in college admissions whether it should be a major factor, only 7%. minor factor, 19%. not a factor at all, 73% of americans say it isn't kosher. what do you think, this seems a little curious. because adversity is subjective. the s.a.t. and so forth, i was never great at these tests so i'm not in love with these tests. but they're just objective standards.s. how do you measure of adversity
11:39 pm
leo? >> laura, lawyer, a let me submit the following facts. mississippi family with 7 kids moved to l.a. they had 7 kids. the mother didn't have a high school education, eighth grade father high school. they had multiple minimum wage job, lived during the watts riots. one of the seven sons received an opportunity to go to law school through affirmative actionl passed the bar, became a civil rights attorney that, lease owe terrell, the guy on your?-- leo terrell.am am i an example of adversity didn't have high school education?-- >> laura: well?-- >> looks like his mike is off. >> laura: he's getting choked up. leo, i'm thrilled that you did everything you did and you accomplished everything you accomplished, i came from pretty humble background, my mom was a waitress, we won't do the i lived five miles from the school and i had to walk.
11:40 pm
people have circumstances and it's tough. it's a larger question of how you say it. one person comes from this neighborhood, and this person comes from this neighborhood you going punish the kid who comes from the better neighborhood so he doesn't get the slot but the kid who scores on the subjective adversity?-- >> you have to give people opportunity, laura. that's why i am on this show right here, i'm a civil rights attorney, public school teacher. >> laura: we got it a lot of peep from a lot of backgrounds that have been well because of objective standards as well. >> absolutely. >> laura: otherwise get rid of the objective standards. if we think you can be successful, subjectively, then you should get in. if that's what people want to do we can try that. b >> it is precisely, i'm thankful for objective tests. it is the reason why i got a full ride to the university of texas. and it has made me, who came from second generation family of
11:41 pm
people who were high school graduates. and then some became college graduates. >> yet horace is forgetting how tough it was for him, and now he wants to close those same doorss for others? >> no, no, no, no, it's know the about closing doors. >> it is.os >> it's about making?-- >> people need help. >> it's making sure that in america, you are not judged by your race?-- >> it's not a question of race it's people having difficulty. >> laura: you're right, and there are a lot of people out there.er that's why we want to get our public schools where they need to be. >> right. >> laura: when you raise the bar for people they surprise you. and i'm glad both of you did so well. great to have you on tonight. leo, great to see you. and he was just pardoned by the president. conrad black will react in his first american interview. and what does he say to those who claim his pardon was tied to his favorable writing about the

several convictions were struck down by the u.s. supreme court. black still served 42 months in prison, sentence cut short but not short enough. he was forced to leave the united states upon his release. now despite all of this, pleased for his clemencies of luminaries of every political persuasion this was the reaction. >> president trump is handing out pardons like a large bunny who loves rotten eggs. >> you have to show remorse to get a presidential pardon. conrad black has not exhibited that. >> if you're in a bit of a legal pickle and you wonder how to get out of prison, think about writing a glowing book about president trump. >> laura: exclusively in his first american interview since his pardon, is lord conrad black.rs everybody knows, you and i have known each other a long time, i have spoken about your absurd case for many, many years and written about it.
11:47 pm
but your reaction to those who say that this was your flattery that won you a pardon. >> laura, thank you for having me on. my reaction is i've absolutely no reason to believe that the president is even aware that i wrote that book. he certainly has never mentioned it. and in any case, anyone who has read it can see it is not uncritical, it's no whitewash. points at some of the less salubrious aspects of his career. i'm not uncritical of him supporter for policy reasons and he was at pains to say, that his motivation and authorized me to say this, urged me to say this was not that we've known each other a long time and i've been generally supportive of him. by careful examination by the legal staff, they confirmed that alan dershowitz and others said on my behalf, it was an unjust verdict and i shouldn't have been charged and it was a bad rap. w
11:48 pm
